Why is Wei Wuxian surprised/puzzled that his sword sealed itself? 🤔

    A sword sealing itself is indicative of the sword owner having a particularly higher cultivation, because only when you’ve gained a higher level of cultivation and have established a greater bond and sense of loyalty and comradeship with your sword, does it seal itself.
    Wei Ying was surprised, as was everyone else, because he also didn’t know that he actually had reached that level of cultivation, which was actually far higher than his peers (Jiang Cheng, Nie Huai Sang—and dare I even say, Lan Zhan, if not EQUAL to Lan Zhan, as there has never been a “winner” ever decided every time Lan Zhan and Wei Ying ever fought using their martial arts, sparred (practiced fighting) using their martial arts, or battled using their martial arts

        Yes, their swords are definitely tied to their “magical” powers and their martial arts, and is also representation of the “right” way of cultivation. Jiang Cheng still carries his sword even after he inherits his mother’s Purple Lightening whip for the above reasons, and it’s also why Wei Ying was questioned (by family), called out on (by outsiders), and rebuked (by Lan Zhan) after he came back from the Burial Mounds and stopped using his sword (because he couldn’t because he lost his Golden Core) and started using his flute, Chen Qing 👌🏻👌🏻

          When he returned and stopped using his sword, I thought Lan Zhan was about the only person who thought there might be another reason besides laziness for the change. He seemed to be more concerned about the change than anyone else.

            Lan Zhan was definitely concerned, but I’d say that it was more out of his own strict and unmoving principles than anything else. It’s because the use of the sword is representative of the “right “ way of cultivation, when Lan Zhan saw that Wei Ying wasn’t using his sword anymore, for how strict and unmoving Lan Zhan’s personality is, it was a hard pill to swallow, especially since at that point, Lan Zhan and Wei Ying had acknowledged each other as soulmates (but it’s shown as BFFs in the drama, to get around the censorship), and for it was difficult for Lan Zhan to see someone he cares so much about to be doing something “wrong”, it’s the reason why—even if he still didn’t understand, at least, not until he lost Wei Ying for 16 years— Lan Zhan still offered Wei Ying care and he offered Wei Ying ways he could help him to gain control over his ‘new’ cultivation of the flute & music

            Yes, the offer to help with controlling the new powers seemed very significant. He couldn’t condone the new abilities but he couldn’t stand by and let them consume Wei Wuxian.

            Yes, and during the 16 years when Lan Zhan was swimming in his own regret and had the time to think things through, when Wei Ying came back 16 years later, Lan Zhan basically let Wei Ying do any and everything… Even drinking inside the grounds of Gusu and Lan Zhan was actually the one who provided the alcohol 80% of the time 😂😂😂😂 In the novel and manhua (Chinese anime), it’s said that Lan Zhan actually kept bottles of Emperor’s Smile inside the floorboards of his own chambers for whenever Wei Ying wanted it 😉😉😉😉

            Within the 3000 Lan Clan clan rules, it’s said that one should not let their guard down or dress down unless it is in front of family or people that you trust, so for Lan Zhan to show up with Emperor’s Smile INSIDE the walls of Gusu AND to be dressed down in, essentially, his PJs when he was bringing the alcohol over—that was a pretty significant and symbolic moment for Lan Zhan as a character, for the relationship between Wei Ying & Lan Zhan, and very telling for Lan Xi Chen ☺️☺️☺️🥰🥰🥰😉😉😉😏😏😏

          Yes, very cathartic! And I liked that earlier in the episode LAN Zhan learns a bit more about Wei Wuxian’s earlier life at Lotus Pier. That for all of his carefree appearance he’s had difficulties in his past.

          I love love love that even when there seems to be quite a bit more that Lan Zhan and Wei Ying need to learn about each other—and DO learn about each other as the drama goes on—that they continue to care for and love each other either the same or even more, but never less. Their hearts for each other continue to grow and embrace the (new) things they see, hear, and learn about each other 🥰🥰🥰

          A great example would be Episode 43, when Lan Xi Chen (Lan Zhan’s older brother) tells the story of how the Lan brothers grew up, their upbringing, the lost connection to their mother and her death, etc. … In that scene, not only did Wei Ying learn more about the background of the Lan Clan and why the brothers’ uncle is the clan leader, but Wei Ying also learns of how Lan Zhan grew up, why he is the way he is (super strict personality and alway by-the-book), but Wei Ying also learns in that moment just how much Lan Zhan has done and has made compromises to himself and his own principles for Wei Ying 🥺🥺🥺

    The villain(S) start to crack, we get to know a more about our boy Lan Zhan (yes, believe it or not, there’s still things to learn about our OTP as individuals even when we’re this late in the game), things start to click for other characters— UGH!! So good!!!!!

    But!! But!!! Just wait until you get to Episode 46….. Something happens in that episode that will make you go “FINALLY!!!!”

      Excellent! I can imagine rewatching to catch all the things I missed the first time. Rewatching the first couple of episodes again, was great because I had much more context for what was going on.

        Definitely do a re-watch after you’ve watched it the first watch over, I definitely recommend it. Doing a re-watch (or multiple 😏😏😉😉) does SO MUCH to help understand things a lot more and when you do said re-watch, it does make you realize just how much you might have missed in the more subtle little details in your first watch, because during the first watch, there’s just so much to take in and it requires so much attention to the bigger details or else things just don’t make sense 😅😅😅

            The moment you’ve been waiting for—and tbh, it was the moment we ALL wait for when we watch this drama— FINALLY happened—Jiang Cheng FINALLY found about about the whole Golden Core situation, and I was able to breathe again 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻

            The revelation came later than expected in the drama, but I’m still so, so glad that we got it, and appreciated it. A lot of times, major reveals in dramas come just too, too late and it sort of wrecks the flow and spoils the climactic feel of the reveal, and though THIS reveal for THIS drama came later than expected (at least for me), it was still perfect and it still worked 👌🏻 I didn’t feel that it ruined the climactic feel nor did it ruin the flow of the drama

            It’s probably a good point for the revelation as Wei Wuxian seems to have come to terms with the past and has been developing a relationship with Jin Ling.

            I liked the way the younger characters got to interact with Wei Wuxian and Wen Ning without their guardians around and could start to separate the people from the myths around them.

            The younger generation was able to feel unrestrained to interact and get to know their “seniors” (so cute how Si Zhui always calls Wei Ying “Senior Wei”) and to draw their own conclusions, not letting the influence of their own clan seniors and the rumours about the past dictate their own thoughts and opinions 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻

            Yes, letting the younger generation interact with Wei Wuxian and Wen Ning without all the emotional baggage of their parents/guardians was great. They got to know them as individuals.

    Yea, so subtitles actually play a pretty crucial part in the watching experience, and definitely clears things up in this case, especially when watching such an initially convoluted drama such as “The Untamed” 😅😅😅

      It’s similar to what Netflix does with Korean dramas, they use the character’s name even when that’s not what is being said or intended. I wish they didn’t, I’ve now watched enough kdramas to be able to hear the difference.

      Yup!! Tu’Er Shen a.k.a. The Leveret Spirit god (兔兒神) 🐇 And when you think about how it came about in the drama (from Lan Yi, the one and only ever female head of the Gusu Lan Sect— if you remember, Wei Ying & Lan Zhan found her spirit stuck inside the ice mountain cave of the backside of Gusu) it’s sort of like 😉😉😉😉😉😉😉😏😏😏😏😏😏 It hints that she might have also been homosexual as well

      It’s funny, though, because many of Xiao Zhan’s fans, including myself, refer to him as Bunny Boy in real life—as a form of endearment, of course— because of how his 2 front teeth are the first things you notice whenever he smiles 😁😁😁 Like a bunny 🐰

    I haven’t seen The Untamed on Netflix but I remember earlier beanies saying that the subs weren’t satisfactory. The Untamed is also on Youtube on Tencent’s official channel, I did see a few epusodes there and didn’t find much issue with the subs.

    #1: It May be a Netflix thing, but I’m not sure, since I watched this on YouTube 🤔🤔🤔

    #2: To ‘cultivate’ means to develop the growth of, and in this case, it’s their martial arts, which the “magic” is also a part of— it’s a part of the internal skills of their martial arts, whereas their fighting skills is a part of the external.

      Thanks, the cultivation term was a bit off putting at the beginning as it made me think of farmers and agriculture rather than magic users.

            It was a slow start but the other night I found myself caught up in the battle with the Slaughter Tortoise. My husband doesn’t quite understand, he sees the wigs and some of the effects and wonders at my interest. I’m enjoying discovering the new mythology and new scenery.

          I’m glad to hear that you’re giving it a chance!! It doesn’t really pick up until about the 15-17 episode mark, with the most “exciting” before that point to be the Slaughter Tortoise fight scene, and I know a few people have decided to give up before that (was he 15-17 episode mark, I mean)— I am one of the guilty ones 😅😅, before deciding to go back to it and to stick it through 3 weeks after I initially gave up lol— but I promise it gets good!! Feel free to post about it in the Beanies section as you’re watching, and also feel free to tag me 😊😊😊

          Just a tip:
          If it helps, you may want to check out (on YouTube….. So is the Original Version, if you need better subs, but I wouldn’t know, because I’m Chinese and don’t need English subs 😅😅😅) the 20-Episode Special Edition if you’re having difficulty getting invested in the 50-Episode Original Version 😊

          The 20-Episode Special Edition, though I have yet to watch it (for fear that if I were to dwell back into this drama even more, that I’d never ever move on…. Seriously), is 20 1-hour plus episodes that are supposedly more coherent (literally just present & past and not the future-past-present format of the Original Version) and focuses more on Wei Ying and Lan Zhan as characters, and less on the martial arts/cultivation aspect of the plot 😊😊

            That would be interesting. Watching the Netflix version I often feel that it’s been edited to fit a format, hour length episodes would make more sense.

            I JUST checked:
            The Netflix version and the YouTube 50-Episode version is basically the same— each episode is about 40-something minutes—I’d argue that the only major difference is the quality of the subs, YouTube’s subs are by far way better in quality…. Take it from me, a native Chinese 😂😂

            The Special Edition with the 20 1-hour long episodes is the way that it is for the fact that it’s condensing 50-episodes into 20-episodes
