Rather than talk about my own favorites, I will ask my own favoriteunanswered kdrama question, one that has been bothering me now for 15 years. Using the Deoksogung Wall as an example, does anyone know how the mortar is done? In the States, mortar is recessed between the bricks but in Olde Korea the mortar forms a perfect frame outside of the bricks/stones. I can’t figure out how they do that and my searches have been fruitless.
Anyone know a Korean stone mason?
If searching Korean-language resources, that might require some time. though i found this 2017 article : http://www.koreapost.co.kr/news/articleView.html?idxno=26155 – about how part of the Deoksugung walls, which was previously under the jurisdiction of the British embassy in Korea, was to be “returned to the citizens’ arms” with restoration works done. “According to this, the stone wall road in this section is basically paved with rectangular stone, while the sides of the stone wall standing on both sides are paved with yellow clay.”
Thanks, mich! It’s fun to see all the neighborhoods. I’m a bit freaked out that of all the dramas listed in the Top 10 Neighborhoods, I think the only show I’ve seen this year is Itaewon Class. Whaaaaat?
🙋🏼♀️ Hi, mich! Long time no see. Good to know you guys are still keeping track of what is where 👏🏽
I’ve hardly watched any shows this year but just finished Chicago Typewriter and will love looking up a number of those locations.
Thanks for Roundup #1!
hello @bbstl! always a joy to hear from you 🙂 yes – we continue to do what we do cos we love it, and we know that one thing that can’t ever be replicated are our Roundups, so we’ll definitely keep doing those too! and yay! how amazing was Chicago Typewriter. my actor KP (Go Kyung-pyo) is in it and am very proud of his performance. we have some CT locations here, although one place I’m still looking out for is Han Se-joo’s house! which was also recently seen in Tale of the Nine Tailed. hope you’ve been well otherwise ❤️
Chicago Typewriter, I will always remember it as the drama with the most books (and bookshelves).
I’m good, hope you are too! Here’s to a highly improved 2021 🥂
thank you @katakwasabi – since we put up that notice, the perpetrator has responded, but does not think that they are in any wrong. rather, they seem to be of the impression that this information ought to be “shared”, since no one has any right to the addresses. but it’s not even about that, tbh. it completely belittles all the effort that’s gone into searching for the locations, many from scratch. there’s not much we can do at the moment, but we are looking at certain internal measures that might prevent a similar case in future. we understand that they’ve been stealing from other sites too! they simply have some nerve. appreciate your kind thoughts ❤️
yes, that’s something i hope we can look into. cos obviously the more voices there are, the louder the discontent would be, and hopefully it will put them out of ‘business’. they even have a ‘donate’ button, claimed to be for the people helping behind the scenes. but i think we’re one of those ‘invisible’ people and not getting anything out of it. not that this was the point to begin with! argh! 😡
Is there any way we can report their site for something that would eventually shut it down? Or place a notice in your site about their impostor or something.
My heart breaks for your team since gathering those esp locations that are new takes time and effort.
thank you so much 🥺 very touched by the kind words ❤️ you can reach out to me at mich [at] koreandramaland [dot] com if you’d like. happy to share more. (also just in case any of their lackeys happen to be lurking around these parts… haha)
another thing is that we have avoided sharing their website link cos we don’t want them to benefit from this (obviously the attention would prob bring up their site visits). but if anyone would like see it for themselves, just reach out to me via email.
thank you @neener ❤️ our site has been running (it wasn’t down, save for the tech issue we had in July) and our data is intact. the issue is that this other site is likely to have downloaded and copied our data for their own site, and that what angers us at KDL – and as seen in this thread, many of you too 🥺 see my response to Katakwasabi on the perpetrator’s (non)response.
Argh so frustrating. Going forward, I suppose you can use some kind of copy-protect measures to prevent machine-lifting of content. Not just for the website, but also for all of your soc-med presence (e.g., RSS feeds should not contain full text – which then becomes easily copiable, etc.). You should be able to claim copyright protection over original photographs and text anyway, and try and report them to their host server on those grounds. I’m sure the host will have some policies on this. Get good legal advice! All the best.
thank you @sirena ❤️ well – tbh with location addresses, it could be quite hard to prove that they were stolen from us. am trying to build a case on any original content they may have lifted, so we shall see how that goes.
@marcusnyc20 :((( sigh. so are we tbh. we’ve faced many plagiarism situations over the last 3 years but none have been as blatant and shameless as this. and thank you. i don’t know how much we can really do but am trying to build a case for original content, so we shall see.
Oh no @michh!!! Have you talked to a copyright attorney? I have a friend who goes through this periodically with her website. It might be good to consult one if you can find a local person who’s reasonable.
@ndlessjoie ❤️ thanks my dear. no – we’ve not talked to any legal people just yet, but also not sure how much it can help. will see if we have anyone in our circles whom we can talk to! trying to start small, like building a case on reporting original content and taking it from there.
Oh no, that truly is unthinkable 😮 I’m so sorry that this has happened to you guys after all your hard work which we have enjoyed so much. Ugh, it’s SO UNFAIR. Why can’t people just live right??? I wish you all the best in getting back at them (sorry, unlike in a kdrama I am unable to think up a good “sting” operation). 🤬🤬🤬
@bbstl you’re here!! ❤️ was wondering if this would be able to reach you somehow 😫 it is extremely selfish, and even if they’re trying to reach out to the French k-drama community… really, that’s just not the way to do it. the most incredible thing was that we had NEVER given our consent, not at all, and yet they took our ‘silence’ as consent? or they just went ahead with it thinking that the info should just be “free” for all? wow. they really have the nerve. and thank you – trying to pick the battles to see which way we can strike without them knowing.
In ref what you have consented to, maybe you can make your copyright license / policy clearer and more visible on your site – whether it is copiable with attribution, or whatever else you choose. You might have already done this. If so, please ignore this comment 🙂
Exactly. Over the last couple if years I have had ideas of visiting South Korea during the cherry blossom season. I remember how gorgeous they were in CAHM and APAD.
Like you Ally I would definitely bookmark Korean Dramaland. Endless possibilities of visiting kdrama locations. For example one location I would trek to is the famous bridge (really highway overpass) from 30BUT17.
hope our cherry blossom blogpost will help when the time comes! 🙂 https://koreandramaland.com/cherry-blossoms-in-kdramas/ – i’ve always wanted to visit during this time too, but the stories of yellow dust during the spring time has put me off >.<
Many, many thanks, Mich. There is so much on your website.
Scanning through the cherry blossoms I stopped for awhile at the Tripitaka Koreana which is fascinating and played a part in a film I recently watched: THE KING‘S LETTERS (2019).
ah! thanks so much for the heads up on that, @marcusnyc20 🙂 we’ll look into that and can add it to the respective listing. happy to credit you for it too!
greetings all! hope things are well 🙂 what’s everyone watching now? i’ve jumped on the ‘Men Are Men’ bandwagon because Geummi- i mean, Seo Ji-hoon is back! good to see SJH as a lively character 🙂
hehe! i love how he’s back together with Yoon Hyun-min too 🙂 having that familiarity and chemistry is so important. and i think his character here really has got a lot more personality than his Meow the Secret Boy one >.< (sorry Jae-sun…)
Tbh, I’m not a fan of YHM, HJE is already yelling, and the similarity between some of the plot elements in this show and Tale of Fairy is raising all kinds of alarms. Not a death knell yet (I watched all of Meow for SJH, even though the cat acted better than L, so I can give this one at least a few more episodes), but I’m hoping the show gets better.
IKR i was quite surprised that they both signed on for this show, that is more of a modern day version of the whole past lives thing tackled in Mama Fairy. it obviously covers more past life timelines but still.. absolutely uncanny. i’m gonna keep to it a bit more cos i at least find Do-gyeom refreshing to watch!
also, quick PSA that the Korean Dramaland site is facing some tech difficulties at the moment >.< but hopefully we'll be back up and running soon! thanks for your understanding and patience.
it was quite a labor of love (because it is very, VERY long…), but worth it especially for those who are keen to learn more about the references from that time, particularly because of the ‘newtro’ trend in South Korea 🙂 let me know your thoughts or your fave song/book/poem/movie reference! thanks to this drama, i discovered Light & Salt (빛과소금), and really enjoy their song ‘Do Not Leave My Side (내곁에서 떠나가지 말아요)’.
and an appreciation post for one of my fave secretaries: When My Love Blooms’ Secretary Kang. thank you for being such a great support to Jae-hyun always. (and i forgive you for that hotel mention…)
Wow, cool! What a great post, thanks! It will help motivate me to make chalk drawings outside my house for all the folks now walking my neighborhood during Covid 👩🏼🎨
I did that last year and it was totally worth it !!!
Hopefully, when this pandemic is over, you’ll get a chance to come to Canada and visit Quebec city and do a wonderful Goblin tour (on your own or with a group)
haha yeah, it seems a little existential, a little ‘out there’, and a bit disconnected. but willing to push through to see where this goes! and thank you 🙂 hope you find the locations of your fave dramas on our page!
same! gonna try to continue and see how it goes. Soompi called it a ‘romcom’ but….. after what I’d experienced with The Third Charm, i don’t trust those kinda descriptions anymore lol. the melo’s out quite early on so we’ll see.
Crossing my fingers episode 3 makes more sense than episode 2. Also, although it definitely wont happen this week if the preview for episode 3 is an reliable indication, I hope we get to see Ha-won smile genuinely (not forlornly, wistfully, or in a flashaback) in the next two weeks. That’s not too much to ask, right?
Ohhhh thank you for this! I never looked into this drama because I have a weird dislike for Seo Kang-joon (reason unknown) although I really liked the title. I’ve read up to number 2 (will read the rest once I catch up/or decide to drop it) from your link and I love it! I now feel like checking it out knowing it includes beautiful literature! Thank you!
One thing! There are some lines from To the Daffodils that were not translated though and some lines were mixed up. I personally liked this part:
눈이 오면 눈길을 걸어가고
비가 오면 빗길을 걸어가라
When it snows, you walk on a snowy road
When it rains, you walk down a rainy path
hi @earthna! thanks for the heads up. the lines were mostly taken from the subtitles (based on what was translated from the show), so some parts may not have been read out. we’ll relook at that part though!
and yes, hope you give the show a chance 🙂 it starts off a little slow, but it has a rhythm that’s perfect for winter.
I finished reading your post. Thank you again for introducing me to this drama! I never knew because of viki’s censorship about what poems they read and omg! I’ve read the poem Me, Natasha, and the White Donkey as a carving on a stone at Gilsangsa Temple in Seoul! I just got goosebumps! Lol. I read about Baek Seok to refresh my memory and the article I found said he is Kim Younghan’s lover. She is the person who donated the place so it can be renovated as a temple. Ir’s strange that out of all his poems, this one got placed in Gilsangsa, unless Natasha is also Kim Younghan. Hmmm

that’s a very interesting thought, @bbstl! and amazing that this question has stayed with you for so long. found some recent research papers/sites but not sure if any of them would come in handy? https://www.tandfonline.com/doi/pdf/10.3130/jaabe.10.37 (Treatment of Brick Wall Systems in Early 20th
Century Korea); https://www.mdpi.com/2076-3417/10/18/6395/pdf (Investigation of Steel Fiber-Reinforced Mortar Overlay for Strengthening Masonry Walls by Prism Tests); https://whc.unesco.org/en/tentativelists/5781/ (submission of Seoul City Wall as a proposed UNESCO heritage); https://www.ancient.eu/Korean_Architecture/ (Ancient Korean Architecture)
Also a mention here about how stone rivets were used instead of mortar in the case of Seokguram: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seokguram ; and an article about the use of bricks in colonial Korea: https://colonialkorea.com/2017/12/17/early-modern-brick-and-the-perforated-qing-cross/
“According to this, the stone wall road in this section is basically paved with rectangular stone, while the sides of the stone wall standing on both sides are paved with yellow clay.”

it was quite a labor of love (because it is very, VERY long…), but worth it especially for those who are keen to learn more about the references from that time, particularly because of the ‘newtro’ trend in South Korea 🙂 let me know your thoughts or your fave song/book/poem/movie reference! thanks to this drama, i discovered Light & Salt (빛과소금), and really enjoy their song ‘Do Not Leave My Side (내곁에서 떠나가지 말아요)’.

It was really nice to see a secretary whose job is appreciated by his boss and who could speak frankly to him. I really liked their relationship.

Hmmm closest I could find was Anyangcheon. They have different paths with cherry blossom though so hard to be sure.
There is a similar looking bench on this photo: http://static.hubzum.zumst.com/hubzum/2019/04/05/13/a585441b5a7a4529bb801fee49624065.jpg

I did that last year and it was totally worth it !!!
Hopefully, when this pandemic is over, you’ll get a chance to come to Canada and visit Quebec city and do a wonderful Goblin tour (on your own or with a group)

oh nice..i want to find the cafe in Find Me in Your Memory.
ANyway, this drama was a little head scratcher but i liked it enough to continue for now.
Mich
March 29, 2020 at 9:39 AM
same! gonna try to continue and see how it goes. Soompi called it a ‘romcom’ but….. after what I’d experienced with The Third Charm, i don’t trust those kinda descriptions anymore lol. the melo’s out quite early on so we’ll see.
ah, we have some locations for FMIYM here: https://koreandramaland.com/jobs/?search_keywords=%22find+me+in+your+memory%22&submit= – maybe Oriole is the cafe you’re looking for!

Wait, Soompi’s calling this a rom-com? What was the author of that Soompi article smoking? This seems like it’s going to be really heavyl
Mich
March 30, 2020 at 3:12 AM
it was implied here, but not sure where the author got their source from: https://www.soompi.com/article/1390410wpp/first-impressions-a-piece-of-your-mind-is-worth-your-time

Mich
March 8, 2020 at 7:18 PM
hi @earthna! thanks for the heads up. the lines were mostly taken from the subtitles (based on what was translated from the show), so some parts may not have been read out. we’ll relook at that part though!
and yes, hope you give the show a chance 🙂 it starts off a little slow, but it has a rhythm that’s perfect for winter.

Hmmm
