This website has a large assortment of O. Henry’s short stories. He’s one of my favorite writers because of his vocabulary, which includes antique American slang, and surprise endings. French author Guy de Maupassant, another favorite master of the short story, was roughly contemporaneous with him.
I thank O. Henry for stories that call up my late childhood and probably some of my high scores on vocabulary tests. The Ransom of Red Chief was my first great surprise ending and informed a lot of my outlook on future parenting, I think 😂
