Inspired by Great Britain’s “God Save the King,” Haydn composed an anthem to Francis II, Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire (and later, the Austrian Empire) on the occasion of his twenty-ninth birthday in 1797. Entitled “Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser” (“God Save Emperor Francis”), it is also known as “Kaiserhymne” (“Emperor’s Hymn”). The composer used it as the basis for the above string quartet as well as a piano version. It was only much later, in 1922, that the melody was used for “Deutschlandlied,” the German national anthem adopted during the Weimar Republic. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gott_erhalte_Franz_den_Kaiser
Six Degrees Trivia: Tchaikovsky orchestrated “Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser” in 1874, giving it a rousingly imperial “1812”-ish flair. Having never been commercially recorded, it was broadcast for the first time ever in 2007 by the BBC. (See fan wall.)
