*goosebumps* I love the Rebel OST so much. The drama used traditional music and dance so well.

Tokiii! Long time no see. Didn’t realise I missed seeing old names till now. Yes Drench by Jambinai is my favorite too in Rebel playlist, followed by Emerald stream by Park Jin hyun. Both sound SO intimate and sweet.

I go starry-eyed listening to them each time. Toki I heard you don’t wanna watch Untamed, and I’m not here to force you, but there’s one instrumental track(my favorite) that I think you too would love. Give it a listen if you have time?🤗

Long time no see! So, how do you know I don’t want to watch the Untamed? Who told you?? *looks around nervously* 😅

But yes, that’s correct. I don’t like demon and sorcery stuff. That instrumental track is beautiful though. I guess you know me well!

Noone did actually. I think I remember some of your replies to others’ posts that you have no interest in it🙃.

Hopefully we’ll meet in recaps when the next sageuk comes round, and hopefully it will have a wonderful OST to add to our collection. 😀

Random thought: It\’s hilarious how before Untamed, at \”Wrongly accused fugitive\” we all were like: JUN KI OPPA and now everyone\’s like: WEI YING! WEI YING! WEI YING!😂
One can decide whether a beanie is pre or post Untamed by looking at their chosen mascot when they\’re promoted.😌

Ok. Question time. Even though Wei Ying is satisfied and I should probably follow his example I can\’t help it😅
1. WEN QING! WHAT HAPPENED TO WEN QING!!!!??????
2. Who\’s the actual hidden mastermind behind all this?
3. How do one make a Tiger seal out of metal? How did Wei Ying made one half out of 3 metals and how did Xue Yang made another half out of just one piece?
4. How did Chenqing come back? Where was it all this time?
5. I\’m guessing the Metal sword the 5th piece manifested itself into Chenqing. Am I correct?
6. Why did Undermight try to attack Jin Ling?
7. How come Su She was able to put hideous curse on Jin Zixun? Did he practice dark arts too?

3

What episode are you on Peony?
Your questions will be answered soon!
I’m not sure who the undermight is, are you referring to Wen Ning?

    1
    2

😬😬😬😬 I finished it and it’s the last 2 episodes that left me quizzical.
      Undermight is Nie Mingjue’s sword.

      1

        Oh hooray!
Wen ning was possessed by Mingjue (the saber spirit) in ep 49. Just before Wen ning entered the temple, Meng yao had taken jin ling hostage and held the quqin string against his throat.
Wen ning came in and chopped the MY’s arm off, the blood splatter stained jin ling’s robes.
LZ and XC played the cleansing song to soothe the resentful energy of the saber spirit, they had formed a barrier in front of MY.
But jin ling’s robes still had MY’s blood, the saber spirit was confused and attacked jin ling. The saber spirit doesn’t differentiate between people and will continuously attack. Also the cleansing song that LZ and XC played was altered by MY to poison and kill MJ.

        2
        2

Regarding SuShe, he was very prideful and jealous of LZ. He worshipped MY who had shown him kindness and encouraged him. He didn’t like Zixun’s cousin because he looked down on MY. To be honest everyone in the Jin family looked down on MY.
I think he willingly agreed to act on MY’s behalf and curse them. It worked out well, this caused WX to be targeted and as a result LZ to be hurt. It would have been very easy for Meng yao to manipulate and create a situation where SuShu would see him crying or upset after the jin’s mistreated him. He could talk about the curses and leave the book lying there for SuShu to take action.

          2
          2

This I get. But isn’t putting curses a part of dark magic? Whered Su She learned it?

            1
            0

Oh oh I see. Stupid question😅.
Of course a guy like him would learn a thing or two abt that particular field.

            1
            0

          I KNEW it was blood.

          2
          2

Meng yao was obsessed with gaining power and gaining recognition from his peers and father. He portrayed himself as someone weak and pitiful but behind the scenes, he was doing all he could to learn and absorb as much information as possible. He was a gifted qiqun player even though he never had lessons. He taught himself everything and learnt the secrets of every sect.

I think whilst he was undercover in the wen clan he learnt about the dark arts and also committed heinous acts with Xue Yang.

The only person that knew his true nature was Mingjue and he was murdered before the truth could come out.
SuShe was Meng Yao’s true follower so I think Meng Yao taught him. SuShe is too much of a coward to do something like that without the backing of someone powerful.

            1
            0

Yeah. I feel bad for Nie Mingjue and even more for Lan Hyung. You treat Yao justified-badly, he makes sure you feel guilty you wronged him. You treat Yao justified-nicely, he STILL makes you feel you’re somehow at the wrong.
Poor Xichen was probably confused outta his serene mind.

    1. WEN QING! WHAT HAPPENED TO WEN QING!!!!??????
Like the other amazing female characters, the writer decided to kill Wen Qing. After the death of Zixun which was caused by Wen Ning. The Jin family requested WY to come in with the Wen survivors, WN and the Yin Metal (if I remember correctly this was the ultimatum) Wen Qing could see how protecting the Wen Clan was destroying WY, so she drugged WY and took the others to apologise. The Jin family lied to them and instead of accepting their apology, slaughtered them all and left their bodies hanging somewhere. ( I think this could have been the wen palace but I’m not sure.) This is also the scene where LZ fights the jin soldies after seeing what they have done.

    1
    2

      😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭
But it was never explained in the drama and sweet Wen Qing was disserviced by that

      3
      1

Yes they really didn’t explain that well. Wen Qing and the survivors were just as victimised as everyone else. No one else stood up for them but WY.
So when WY woke up from the drug and found out, in his grief and guilt, the yin metal and resentful energy of the burial mounds overpowered him completely.

        2
        0

      2. Who is the main mastermind? I feel like so many people were to blame. Overall I can pin it down to two people, one person responsible for the past and the present events.
      In the past:
After the sunshot campaign, the powerful sects were the Jin family, Gusu lan sect and Jiang Chen’s sect. The Jin family were rich, greedy and wanted the power of the yin metal for themselves. Meng Yao also coverted the power and started to turn the other sects away from WY. Meng Yao used WY to deflect from his schemes. No one questioned why the jin family had to have all the yin metals or had to persecute the wen survivors or set up watch towers etc. The other sects weren’t in a position to question them as they needed the jin clan’s money to rebuild after the war. Meng Yao wasn’t accepted by the jin clan or his father, in turn he wasn’t respected by anyone else. He got rid of jin zixun – so he would be the only successor. He worked with xue yang to continue to find the yin metal and experiment on Wen Ning and Song Lan after Wei Ying’s death. He killed his father becuase the king would never trust him and did all he could to prevent Meng Yao near his grandchild. I believe if Meng Yao hadn’t died, he would have found a way to kill Jin Ling because he is a threat to his status.

In the present- the mastermind is Huisang. In a way he is just like Meng yao, they have hid their true nature under a facade. The difference is Huisang has never decieved anyone for his own power. He became suspicious of MengYao after the death of his brother. He did some investigating and found out Meng yao’s secrets. He discovered the secret about his wife and paid the prostitutes to speak to all the leaders. If you go back to the early episodes, there is a scene where this old man is talking about the yiling patriarch to some cultivators, I would have a look at who is walking past. I don’t think the drama did a good job of explaining this so I would recommend reading the book.
Anyway Hiusang is suspicious and makes use of Mo Xuan Yu who is being mistreated by his family. Mo Xuan Yu on the orders of Hiusang agrees to offer his body for WY to use and avenge him to kill his family and Meng Yao.
He also engineers the young gusu lan, LZ disciples to run into Mo Xuan Yu (now WY) and the yin metal. Anyway, the point is Huisang is weak at cultivation and had no proof to discredit Meng yao, he used WY and LZ to uncover the truth. He also planned a way to get into the temple for the final showdown and create a chance for Meng Yao to die. He manipulated XC to make the killing blow.

I think Meng Yao was the true evil doer, he didn’t need to commit so many heinous acts and he had so many opportunities to take another path. I still don’t understand how he could protect XC but in the same breath kill everyone else without an ounce of remorse.

      3
      1

I thought of Huisang being the hidden hand too but had second thought when he was THAT shocked upon discovering Mingjue’s body. He could’nt have done that all alone without anybody noticing and I couldn’t believe he wouldn’t immeadietely honor and bury hyung but use it further for his agenda.
        .
Meng Yao? I think he’s a sociopath and that’s why. I feel like if anything, TU gave me a simultaneous demonstration of sociopath vs psychopath via Meng Yao and Xue Yang 😅

        1
        1

Meng yao was digging up his mothers corpse and trying to escape. Huisang figured out his plan and switched the body with Mengjue. The awful thing that meng yao did was to torture and carve up mengjue’s body into pieces. Huisang discovered his brothers missing bodyparts and used them to lead WY and LZ to the truth.
Exactly, it was very interesting to see these two characters work together. I would have liked the show to mention that a bit more.

          1

    1. Wen Qing actually does when she and Wen Ning went to Jingling Tai to apologize. Wen Ning came back from the dead as a puppet being (saved again and) willfully “controlled” by Wei Ying via CHEN Qing (Wei Ying’s flute)

    2. Meng Yao was the mastermind over everything that went down ever since he set free Xue Yang from the capture of the Nie Clan and became buddies with Xue Yang (that time when he faked innocence in killing someone but was actually caught by Nie Ming Jue… Around episode 11 or 12 🤔)

    3. I forgot… But I’m doing a re-watch, so maybe the details will come back to me later lol

    4. 16 years ago during the big battle & Wei Ying chose suicide (before he was saved by Mo Xuan Yu), after he had “died” his possessions were sort of scattered or taken by the Jin Clan, and secretly, by Jiang Cheng… Jiang Cheng took possession of Cheng Qing

    2
    2

Ah that’s the other question. What’s at the bottom of that cliff? Lava or ground? How’d he survive? And Chenqing just being with Jiang Cheng ..It’s anticlimactic isn’t it?😅 I expected something magical.

      2
      3

I think it was just open earth—i.e. lava— at the bottom of the cliff, so when Mo Xuan Yu saved Wei Ying, it must’ve been before Wei Ying hit the bottom…

Due to censorship, many things from the original novel & donghua (Chinese anime) was not explained/included in the drama

Despite Jiang Cheng being an ass and despite how he blames Wei Ying to a certain level over what happened to his family, I believe that he still loves Wei Ying like a blood brother and wanted to have a keepsake of Wei Ying’s after his “death”, and what better thing to keep than that of his most prized possession (Chen Qing) that Wei Ying always carried around with him?? ☺️☺️☺️

I wanna meet dis Mo Xuanyu because damn 😂 What a cool random guy!
      Thanks @bebeswtz !!

      2
      1

At first it was a little bit confusing because Episode 1 already opens up to present day (i.e. 16 years later) and Wei Ying has already been saved by Mo Xuan Yu—and presumably is in his body in some way magically, because he was living as Mo Xuan Yu in the Mo Manor with Mo Xuan Yu’s cousin & aunt (who abused him)— and very, VERY little info was given about Mo Xuan Yu except that it was mentioned (in passing, like it was a non event) that he’s another illegitimate son of Jin Guangshan, Leader of the Lanling Jin Sect (because, apparently, he was a whore and not only slept around but impregnated many).

I actually needed the help of other Beanies to explain it all to me, too, because I was also super confused, not having watched the donghua nor read the novel before watching the drama version 😅😅😅😉

        If you have the time—

Link to the novel (English translated):

        2
        2

Yeah I was so confused about the Mo Xuan Yu part, it took me ages to work out WY was supposed to be in a different body.
I still don’t understand the yin metal and how it works. I think I need to re watch the show!

          2
          3

WAIT WHAT So Wei Ying actually should NOT have Xiao Zhan’s face?😱😱😱

            1
            0

@ayaan From what I understand, the Yin Metal is something made up of many piece that, when put together, can produce evil and bring about chaos into the pugilistic world, so it was crucial to have the “right” people to be in possession of it to guard it.

Yea, the drama didn’t do a great job in explaining the Mo Xuan Yu part and about how Wei Ying was supposed to be magically in his body and how the magic eventually wore off and everyone began recognizing him and seeing him as Wei Ying again

            2
            0

            @peony

To my understanding, no, he should not– at least not during the beginnings of the “16 years later” part (the donghua, [i.e. the anime, but for Chinese animation it’s called ‘donghua’], makes it 20 years vs. the drama’s 16 years)

            2
            0

I have read almost half the novel but onlythe chapters with “interesting” looking titles and summaries. So I probably missed this 😅

          0
          2

Yeah, this didn’t click me for until I read a fan fic! I think the novel mentioned it too but LZ was able to recognise WY in the present after he played their song when trying to calm Wei Ning.
Also that is why JC struck WY with zidan because he recognised WY’s mannerisms and how he used the same technique of the flute. He wanted to see if the body was possessed but there was no reaction.

Only two episodees left of The Untamed.😭😭😭😭😭
It’s especially hard because they picked up the speed and punch back again for the final episodes and just when my mom’s back to not-sleeping mid episode, it’s going to end!!!!😭😭😭
But VERY MINOR boo boos aside, thank you The Untamed for gorgeous, loaded acting, unparalleled chemistry between characters, not only gorgeous music but also scientific music undertones (which the Hindustani music student here approves, because damn😍), calming sceneries and thoughtful, exemplary, life-advise-y, spiritual plotlines. Stories which perfectly balances quirky mundane life with deep but not preachy discussions of meaning of life/death…they have always been my personal favourite. Like Arang and the Magistrate.
So thanks again for havin all of those in one package, and having 45 MINUTE 50 EPISODES because what a nice way to satisfy “more more”ing fans without being too much?!?!
Much love. And deep bow.

ABSOLUTELY NOT . I’m POLYAMOROUS . Can’t do one guy.
    They’re all cute.
The demonic fluffball, the cinnamon roll, the panicked gay angel, the drama queen young mistress, the somber baby, even the awkward peacock.
The antagonists are also mega cute. The tragic blind guy (Song Lan?) is very elegant & handsome too.

    Why pick one? #CantCommit

Ok people. Can I say that the big “Sizhui is da Wangxian baby” reveal was the lamest (at least in the version I watched)? Seriously, what’s up with the cup noodle ad?🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️Worst timing ever. Hilarious, yes. But the least you could’ve done was subbing the ad too and getting the same Ah Yuan baby actor. This disrupted the emotional punch and I’M FURIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Where are you watching?? I’m pretty sure there is just one version of the drama going around online… 🧐🧐🧐

So the ep 39 you watched didn’t have an inserted ad like this?😱
This is the 1st time I saw an inserted ad in Untamed it was in the worst possible moment.

Ooooh so there’s a grander reveal? Yaaay I’ll wait then.

There was the ad, but imo, I wouldn’t call this a reveal, more like a ‘hint’ 🙂
When things start to click and realizations start to happen for Wen Ning–and finally Wei Ying— THAT was the most satisfying for me 🙂

You’ll get there!! Just keep going!!

Ya the drama has random ads injected into the drama (these really have nothing to do with the drama itself they are just ppl ads). Like this and the olay. I just skipped them.

I know viki has them as I watched there but idk if Netfkix does.

However need to fret about the what-ifs here…..even though WWX gains deeper understanding of human nature in his second life, he still maintains the purity and goodness of his heart that Lan Zhan (and we) love!

I actually took a break around ep 30, it was hard to keep watching the events that led up to WY’s death. Hang in there, you will be rewarded with their reunion soon!

    2
    2

I too would take a break if I could. For my own mental health I better keep going and get it over with.
Seriously, how could one live with that much guilt??!!
What makes is harder to watch is that it’s extremely realistic. Very rarely an all-sacrificing selfless person borns, and the people around him don’t let him be the heaven-sent gift he is, and HE’S the person who ends up bearing all the undeserved guilt and despair and loneliness.😭😭

      3
      1

It is very realistic and I like that all the characters have been affected, in the present and come to terms with their guilt.
Have you read the author’s novel Heaven’s Official Blessings, it was heartbreaking and a beautiful story.

Reading “Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation”, their extremely unhealthy kinks ALMOST tainted the story for life for me, and the incredible clever execution of the drama barely managed to salvage the experience.
So I hope this story doesn’t sport anything like that and if so, I’m ABSOLUTELY willing to read. Because after all; the author seems to do charming plots and characterizations. Do you have a link please?🤗🤗🤗

Yes it certainly isn’t as explicit as GDC, that was a huge shock, I’ve tried to block most of that out.
If I remember correctly, HOB, the most they do is hug and kiss. I think this novel has extra chapters, which I haven’t read yet.
        It’s on google drive

Be warned it is a lengthy novel to read and there are a lot of characters.

Yaaay! Thank you for the link! I’ll check ot out asap. \^0^/
          .
That’s good to know. Reading the latter half of GDC, I was like…WHY?? If I remember correctly, ALL their firsts happen while drunk. And THEN in the aftermath, WWX frets “I shouldn’t have done that.” Duh, dude. It’s better to forget altogether their kink explorations that followed.
Let’s not even talk about how 99% of fan comments were heart-eyes and cheering for what happened, and downvoting the 1% who thought otherwise. *sighs.
Glad to know it’s not the case here. Thanks again for going thru the trouble!

            0

Yeah I avoided the comments completely. I just wasn’t expecting the novel to take that turn, I thought the extra chapters would be a flashback scene or LZ perspective. Apparently it is common for BL novels to have this type of kink.

            1
            0

So my comment disappeared! How annoying!

I agree, I avoided the comments on the website. A lot of the comments made it sound normal so I think maybe it is common to portray characters like that in BL novels.
I have yet to read the extras for HOB but the main storyline was sweet. I do have to mention the main characters met in their childhood and I think one of them was 16 and the other 10? But I think the way that the story developed over several years, meant that wasn’t an issue for me.

            @ayaan
Comment as in you commented on a GDC chapter? If so didn’t see that😅. I too stopped reading after getting disheartened after 10 or so.
I think there’s a lot of debate on this topic, because I even hate the term BL. I think it’s quite derogatory. Where’s GL, then?
GDC had more than potential to turn the tides, but it went there and did THAT. You are giving me quite the positive impression on HOB. I’m looking forward to it!😄

        @peony
I responded to your comment earlier on db but it didn’t go through.
Yes I prefer GL to be used but I just meant I hadn’t read this genre before even when I used to read manga!
I hope you enjoy reading HOB, hopefully I haven’t praised it too much.

Ahh no no when I commented upon BL I wasn’t directing it at you @ayaan , not at all. Please don’t be offended or hurt😅.

So guys, I decided to go back in my fanwall and delete some too-unrelated or cringey posts (but not ones with my precious fellow beanie comments), mainly song and food posts because,
1. I like being able to navigate/revist my old posts better
2. I had the childish hope of helping DB in a miniscular way by reducing my fanwall content.
END RESULT- My fanwall now has only 8 pgs with promotion-celebration-posts in almost each, and I didn\’t get demoted! So YAAAAAAY!!!!!

Today I learnt the hard-way that you can’t gift modern kids with “old kiddie classics” without having read it first with a grown-up’s mindset.
I found out recently that the beloved WIZARD OF OZ has 13 sequels and was overjoyed.
At 1st.
In the very 2nd sequel, you see a girl who was turned into a boy when she was a babe, and when now he doesn’t have any memory of it and quite like being a boy, but against his will and without giving him time to think it through, he’s turned back into a girl once again.
And in a women’s revolt, all women drop house duties and men has to wear aprons and babysit, and they learn a lesson which I was quite satisfied about, but at the end of the day ladies eagerly run back to the kitchen in order to “retain order and harmony”.
In another sequel, a mythical country is based upon “China”, where everybody are stereotyped and eat cats.
Now, a man of his time and probably a good man at that, Frank Baum must not have meant any harm, and the kiddie readers I guess, didn’t have the same “ugh” reaction as I did.
Plus they’re simple and short fast-paced kiddie stories and characters aren’t allowed much “thinking time”……BUT kids GROW up reading these stories and with THIS mentality growing and blossoming inside them as they go, right?
So I’m just gonna respect them for what they WERE and treat them as classics, but won’t let them near a kid anytime, at all if I could.
The following pic depicts Oz men happily stomping aprons and kicking tubs upon the return of the women.*shudders*

Ugh indeed, that illustration is ridiculous too but I don’t think stories like that need to be kept away from children. Not necessarily. A lot of kids can read or watch stories with elements like that without letting it influence them, and it can open up discussions in school and with families about the time the story was written and what is wrong with that sort of thinking.

    2
    1

True that. If the child is someone close to me I’m not gonna drag it outta their hands. I’ll have discussions with them. But if I am to gift it to a child I don’t have assurance that I’ll get to talk with them later nor that their parents and teachers are open-to-discussions people…..that won’t do.
My own cousin sister- Me: Hey how was the book? What do you think of that scene?
      Sister: Hmmm.
🤷‍♀️ So I don’t know what’s going on inside her head and how she defines the scenes in her mind. I’d rather not give her this book in case it’d be dangerous!

      1
      2

Also I think I’ll have to up the age group 🤔
The book is recommended for 5-8 and “ok” for above 8, but it calls for some advanced discussions about serious issues as of today, which is better suited for above 8?
5-8 kids need books that gives them more read-and-understand themes and acceptable-in-this-age themes, rather than multiple controversial themes scattered all over the book?
Having adults explain too much stuff after each book (14 books!) might discourage them from reading.

Agree, unless it was close family and friends I wouldn’t want to gift a book like these for that reason too.

When you get too lazy and crazy…
…..you make RAMEN KIMBAP 🤣🤣🤣
Note: Eat it quickly. Because of watery and hot Ramen, seaweed paper quickly turns rubbery.

More hidden jems in GOBLIN. 😍😍😍
1. Park Se-wan
2. Yang Jo-a : Dear old Seol-geum from ROOKIE HISTORIAN.
3. Yeom Hye-ran: Aunt Jeong-ah’s sweet, abused eldest daughter Soo-young from DEAR MY FRIENDS

Since I’ve heard lotsa ravings about MY LITTLE BRIDE, I decided to give it a try when this clip came up in my feed.
And oh man. It’s TERRIFYING and NOT the least bit funny. It’s creepy and disturbing. I forced myself to watch because it’s a small clip, and whenever I thought it was getting better and funny, the groom does something creepy! To imagine if I was the bride in this situation…
And my LITTLE sis thought it was a lovely drama, wth?😵
I should’ve expected this RIGHT when I saw the title of the drama, yeah.

Yeahhh from the title alone I have known I would never watch that movie

It’s child marriage, perversion & care for a family friend represented as romance… It’s the most awful Korean thing I’ve ever seen. It’s also the first Korean thing I watched.

    1

      Ikr?
But inexplicably, all K-dramas, even the crappiest ones have this abilty to make the viewers come back in hopes of “It’d get better the next time”😅
It’s a damn unavoidable rabbit-hole, regardless the opening is nasty or alluring 😂

Does anybody know which drama this is from? It’s a public undressing? Dressing?
Anyway it’s the 1st time I’m seeing something like this done to a Royal lady. In Dong-yi there was Queenly hairpin Yongjam removing, which is not as drastic as this one.
Somebody please enlighten me?🙏

No. I never watched it. It wasn’t in the period when I am not into kdrama. I didn’t even know it exists until you asked. Maybe other beanies know. You can ask in open thread. 🙂

They are deposing Queen Yoon (Yeonsangun’s mother).

        1
        1

          Queen Lady Yun rather.
Removing her royal attire was publicly humiliating and she was also executed later.

That was the more reason why Yeonsangun went completely nuts and execute anyone that had anything to do with his mother’s death.

The two concubines who bad mouthed his mother that led to her execution were violently beaten to death by Yeongsangun himself.

This is what I love most about rewatches. You always, always notice something you didn’t notice the last time. Sometimes earlier versions of the actors who are now famous. Probably because the PDs recognised their future potential early on and used them for minor roles in their drama?🤔
Of course, most of the time this is true only with good dramas with good PDs and writers.🤷‍♀️
