While I was so happy that K-drama writers have started to show Sexual Harassment as an offensive act that should not be tolerated by women, it surprises me how a bunch of new popular k-dramas are starting to recycle outdated tropes: wrist grabbing, surprised kisses (with wide-open eyes heroine), sexual discrimination, stalker-like and controlling behavior, extreme jealousy, drastic lack of emotional intelligence, etc. And thus, the romanticization of the culture of violence continues, because female audiences find these cute rather than creepy!! It makes me really frightened to see these dramas are also highly followed by young teenagers!! I sincerely wish all of us to take a moment to think about the implications of glorification of violence in Media.

I can never brain how some female fans considered forced kiss as hot and being excited about it. Maybe in real life, they like it? sigh.

Forced kisses in RL (and not-RL) are never sexy, they are terrifying. A surprise kiss, IF there has been prior flirting and lead up, can be sexy, but all cues, verbal and non-verbal must be carefully read and reacted to appropriately.

I personally don’t like to be suprised like that! Even if I am in a flirting stage with someone, I want him to ask me respectfully rather than kissing or grabbing me by suprise… it would me intimidating as hell in RL

Surprise kiss depends on the mood, sometimes it can be exciting in situations just like you said, sometimes it’s not. But it will be a pleasant memory if both parties are mutually agreed to do it, in my opinion. The great way to start any intimate kiss is by soft and quick kiss first – things that at times kdrama failed to do so and made some viewers include myself are unable to enjoy it.

I agree. I HATE are the ones where she’s actively trying to get away and he holds her head in place, I’ve seen those in some earlier dramas and I get queasy just looking at it.

I don’t like when man is using his strength to force the kiss especially when the woman is not up for it. I do think nowadays some drama started to give better kind of kiss scenes – for example Temperature of Love was meh but I love when the male lead told the female lead he wants to kiss her and if she refused, she can turn away, similarly in That Man Oh Soo the male lead asked the the female lead to kiss him first – my understanding is he indirectly asked her consent first. There are some other drama too but I can’t think of them right now. Sometimes drama are meh overall, but this kind of scenes left a good impression. I love romance and romantic scenes but only the ones which done right.

@seralovestteobokki The recent dramas which illustrate consent are marvelous, and hopefully we will continue to see more, and they will influence viewers both young and old. Consent is romantic and sexy.

Thank you for this brilliant comment @egads: “Consent is romantic and sexy” + it promotes mutual respect and equality!
