Oh no SLS again 🙁

I haven’t started this one yet, but from the reviews that I’ve read– yes, the purpose of his character is basically to offer a choice to the FL and to give viewers SLS, and not even a liiiiiittle SLS, but like, MAJOR SLS…..

How far into the drama are you?? How are you finding it so far??

    3

I’ve skimmed through the raws up to ep 41. A part of me wished that it ended there lol. I still intend to finish it but maybe with english subs coz I only understood 20% of the convesrsations. I like wolfie and the FL. Their love story is touching but it’s too angsty for me, an emotional torture. SML had a cool entrance and first meeting with FL. He has a great character, did a lot for the FL, has more interactions with her, his kingdom took her in and her servants totally ships them. How could I not have an SLS. Sigh.. anyway Im still glad I watched it coz the story, characters, actors, cinematography and music are good. Xiao Zhan did well acting as Ji Chong 👍 One of the best 2nd male lead for me.

I’m waiting for access to more episodes before I begin it—might even wait until ALL the episodes are out before starting it— as I don’t think I’d be patient enough to pace myself watching it and then have to wait for access to more episodes. I refuse to pay for VIP on iQiyi for immediate access to all the episodes and I’m definitely not paying for a Viki Pass to get access to advance release episodes.

I know that, to date, Ji Chong has been the character with the greatest challenge for Xiao Zhan:

While filming “The Wolf”, he actually personally made the choice to go back to school—more specifically, a graduate program that had something to do with acting/production, etc.— and so he would be on the set of “The Wolf” during the day, then attend night classes, and as then semester went on, he actually brought his homework (research he had to do for his graduate thesis) with him on set and whenever he wasn’t running lines with his coworkers or memorizing his own lines for the drama, he would be doing his homework.

On a professional level, he was thrust into A-List second lead status with “The Wolf” and his character, Ji Chong, without much prior acting experience. I think at this time, he had only done a really cringe-y “idol” drama that didn’t receive much attention (because it was so cringe-y), a bit part in “Shuttle Love Millennium”, and was the second male lead in the drama “Oh! My Emperor” (co-starring Zhao Lu Si) wherein it was just a low-profile (web??) drama that was produced for the sake of promoting X-NINE (the group that he’s supposedly still attached to, because no official statement of them disbanding has ever been put out— sort of like the situation Wang Yi Bo is in with his group, UNIQ)….

I’ve been hearing really good things about “The Wolf” and his SML character, and I’m to start it when I finally do!! 😊😊😊

Yeah it’s better to binge watch it with Eng subs. He appeared at Ep 11. Legend of Fei has not yet released so at the moment I do not have a historical Cdrama to watch and decided to check out The Wolf and got hooked. When it was first announced I only know Darren in the cast. That was 3 years ago and I completely forgot about it until now. I have not watched The Untamed but I watched Super Star Academy (yes I watch cringy idol dramas sometimes and thought he was cute but the story is weird) and Oh My Emperor (I ship the FL and the uncle more than the emperor, the song there by his group is good). Glad that I was able to watch it and re-discover him. I will be watching Oath of Love when it gets released.

Since Wang Yi Bo seems to be China’s “goldeneye boy” right now, I think MANY people are waiting for “Legend of Fei” to air 😅😅

Yea, I’m not sure why “The Wolf” was postponed for 3 years 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️🤔🤔 I don’t think ANYONE knows…. It’s definitely one of Darren Wang’s most anticipated works, because it is his first ever historical drama and the drama that his late mother anticipated and wanted to watch the most, and Xiao Zhan’s first drama after “The Untamed” (which I HIGHLY recommend) where he’s actually a major character (he didn’t have a really big role in “Joy of Life”). I am definitely getting impatient with waiting for “Oath of Love” 😅😅

@bebeswtz I was looking forward to it coz of the FL actress and I read bits of the novel. It’s martial arts heavy. The male lead’s character is also unique. Hope that they adapt it well but I will not set high expectations lol.
Do you know if Xiao Zhan is using his real voice in The Wolf? I think it’s the same voice he has in the Oath of Love trailer. I have high respects to those who use their real voice or dub themselves coz lately the voice of MLs in Cdramas sound the same lol. If not it’s okay.

            0

            @reijeanne

For the trailer of “The Wolf”, it’s definitely Xiao Zhan’s own personal voice 👌🏻 I haven’t began actually watching the drama, since I’m waiting for more episodes before I start it, but I just chose a little snippet of Episode 11 to watch just to check out the voicing done in the drama and I can tell you this:
All 3 of our leads are definitely dubbed, and sadly, none of them dubbed their own voice (but the voice actor that dubbed Xiao Zhan has a VERY similar voice to his, it’s just a liiiiiittle bit higher in pitch compared to Xiao Zhan’s real voice… It’s so similar, in fact, I actually had to keep listening a few times before confirming that it’s actually not really Xiao Zhan’s beautiful voice).

Here is actually a really good explanation to how dubbing for Chinese dramas work, for the most part. It explains why many drama characters’ dubbing sounds the same, why or why not an actor/actress may or may not dub their own drama characters, why almost 99% of period dramas will definitely be dubbed, etc. … I hope this helps!! 😉😉

            @reijeanne

Both, Xiao Zhan and Yang Zi, do not have their voices dubbed AT ALL for the trailer of “The Oath of Love”, and let’s cross our fingers and hope that it stays this way and that their voices are not dubbed in the final product of the drama itself (as we can see from “The Wolf” that the trailer vs. the final product of the drama that goes on air can be very different

I just finished episode 16 (which is all that is subbed) and I am enjoying it. Granted SL will always be Wei Wuxian for me. But I am curious where the story will go. I think our SML is captured by the FL because she sees and accepts him for who he is – which is always wonderful.
But I am only 16 eps in and can see from the intro that there is another female character.
Overall, for all it’s flaws, I still like it and am enjoying watching it.
Sean is always a treat for the eyes and heart….

      2

From reading the reviews from MyDramaList, I actually know what’s going to happen and who the other FL is (SFL?? Like SML?? Haha) and what happens to who and who ends up with who, but it’s actually not deterring me from still wanting to watch this one 😊 The power of Sean Xiao Zhan 😅😅😍😍🥰🥰😘😘 So yes, I agree that he’s always a treat for the eyes AND the heart (it’s not always the case that I consider someone a treat for both, the eyes & heart…. He has both for me ❤️)

Oh I don’t want to know any spoilers! Darren Wang who plays the wolf boy is new to me. His acting is somewhat uneven to me, but still he’s grown on me.
Li Qin is fantastic as she goes from spunky to hurt then strong and smart.
Mostly though I love the music – all of it.

          2
          1

            No worries, I won’t post spoilers 😅😅😅

Surprisingly, I actually haven’t watched any of Li Qin’s or Darren Wang’s previous dramas, so I cannot comment on their acting in “The Wolf”, abut I have seem them in variety and reality shows, and I like their real life personality ☺️

Yes!!!!!! Like, I said, I’ve not started the drama yet, but I HAVE already downloaded the OST/instrumental score for it and I love love love it 😍

A bit of a spoiler but from what I skimmed, he’s not the only one who did things for the FL, the FL also helped him resolve his issues. They have a good relationship. 🙂

        1

Yay!!! A female lead in a historical Chinese drama where the story isn’t about a strong female lead (like “Legend of Fei”, “Princess Weiyoung”, “Journey of Flower”) but she’s still a strong character and is able to return what’s been given to her by the males and isn’t in distress nor is she a Candy 👍🏻👍🏻💪🏻💪🏻👌🏻👌🏻

I just started watching The Wolf and read some spoilers about the ending but I will still keep watching coz I love the ending song \”Flowing Backwards\” by Jolin Tsai. I love how C & TW dramas have their OP & ED songs. Im excited to see which episode are those spoiler scenes from the ED song. Thank you to the translation team for also subbing the songs. Some of my favorite ED are Bear To by Wang Chengzhang (The Eternal Love), Out of Favor by Li Yi Tong (Bloody Romance), Hatred of Jiang Nan by Lu Hu (Untouchable Lovers), It Can Be Thought of but not Spoken by Queena Cui (Go Princess Go), A Kind of Courage Called Giving Up by Della Ding (Ballad of the Desert), Polar Star by Chen Xueran (My Girl), We are People In Love by Tian Xin (I Want to Become a Hard Persimmon), The Habit of Thinking About You by Xiao Yu (Honey and Clover), Very Quiet by Fahrenheit (Momo Love) Ai Mei by Rainie Yang (Devil Beside You). Yes I\’ve been watching Asian dramas esp. TW dramas in CR & My Soju since little.

what guys really say with vague responses to confessions is “I´m not sure yet if I want to f***you.” and it IS in fact pretty much all they think about except in kdramas.

#Extraordinary You ep 7-8 / 13-14/15-16 thoughts:
1. Kim Hye-yoon and Ro-woon\’s beauty amplified 10000x in historical costumes!
2. My first thought after realizing that Joo-da might not be the nice candy we know is PROTECT DO-HWA.
3. I prefer the sweet Haru over the cold one but Im happy to watch him expressing different emotion like anger and frustration.
4. Everytime Baek-kyung acts mean towards Dan-oh, all I think is he\’s so going to regret it.
5. Dried Squid Fairy doesnt really like Haru and Baek Kyung doesnt he? I had this thought that maybe in the Flower manhwa like in Secret, Dan-oh and Baek-kyung are the couple while Haru has forbidden feelings for Dan-oh. But then maybe Dan-oh and Haru gained self-awareness and fell in love with each other thus messing up the story really bad and the story ended in tragedy. Fairy fears that history will repeat itself.

12
2

So the writer felt bad at the tragic ending of Flower manhwa so she created the spin-off Secret where it’s a romcom and DO and BK are supporting characters. She added some drama to their relationship but eventually was going to give them a happy ending but Haru somehow found his way to Secret manhwa to be with DO and starts messing up again the story. DO and BK are the couple intended by the writer (fake/stage) but DO and HR in their real selves (shadow persona) is the true OTP.

I honestly got shiver when Ju-da looked at Sae-mi with that dangerous glint in her eyes. What have you awakened, Do-hwa?? I need to protect this boy.

It’s weird that the manhwa character which is hinted to be Haru in Flower manhwa said that he doesnt know why he came to their world. Is he a time traveller!? 😯

The same fish wind chime? It seems that Dan-oh and Haru are connected to the place where they had their camp. Also Haru’s seat by the window is the typical main character seat 🤣

15

Oh my gosh, it’s the Fish Cult making a sneaky appearance! Nice catch.

At least this one is not alive, so we don’t have to worry about fish CPR or fish funeral. 😛

      4

Innnnnnteresting. I did notice that the wind seems to play a big part in the show. There was a gush of wind when they were at the camp which prompted them to find the ornament, another one earlier when Dan Oh was looking at the yet-unnamed-Haru in the courtyard, wind is the reason why her umbrella ended up in the flowers (and how they met) and in this scene, the wind is moving the curtain, effectively isolating the two of them from everyone else.

    8
    0

They really rely on tropey mechanisms to drive home the main character part. First that gust of wind that blew the cap, then how the box twinkled when it was under the wooden platform, no sunlight within reach.
Haru also has very sunlit moments…. 🙄. Gorgeous, but beyond obvious

#Extraordinary You ep 6 spoilers
Im going to imitate Nam-joo and Baek-kyung. \”From on, Extraordinary You is the only drama for me\” (at least for the 4th quarter of 2019)
About that shocking end of episode, I think Haru completely disappeared after he saved Dan-oh in the pool. What if in that scene Dan-oh was supposed to die or be in critical condition but Haru interfered and he was the one who \”died\” instead. Baek-kyung was crying in the hospital. Unlike in the past it seemed that Dan-oh was in truly critical condition. Throughout the episode they keep saying Dan-oh\’s time is running out.

6
4

I also thought that Haru saved Dan-oh’s life, when perhaps this was set up to be her “death” scene

    3
    1

I mean, think of the drama it introduces to “Secret”.As growth for Baek-kyung, she dies right after his grand announcement.

      2
      0

But was it a stage scene? I doubt she’d die off stage and I didn’t get the impression it was on stage… Also they set up her character as having a heart disease and then having her die by drowning seems… uhm… weird.

I heard a click during the panic scene so I guess it’s a stage scene.

Extra-ordinary You eps 1-8 spoiler?
Dan Oh is so funny and lively thanks to becoming self aware. I laughed so much when she found out that she\’s just an extra character and cringed with her when she acts as a love bridge for the main leads but in this week\’s episodes we got reminded of her character\’s heart disease and one-sided love for Baek Kyung. It\’s sad that her purpose in the comic is not to be the love bridge for the leads but most probably she\’s a plot device for Baek Kyung\’s character development. If the comic creator is thinking of a happy ending for BK, DO will live and they will end up together or if not, BK will realize his love for DO but it will be too late and DO will die. I really feel bad for DO\’s character.😔

I admit, this drama special was the first thing I thought of when I watched this. I had watched it during Healer while waiting for new episodes and now that same PD is doing a whole drama like it! Would kind of love if JCW were in this, but L is doing a good job so far.
