Woah I just realized dramabeans is only recapping 3 shows atm- with Jugglers being one recap away from completion. This feels so weird😄

me too, I feel so weird when I open DB. DB not recapping many good drama and there is some news that DB not reporting again.

Looks like tipsymocha and awcoconuts aren’t writing news recently. It’s all javabeans at the moment. I hope they “bounce back” soon!

Yep. Don‘t get me wrong I think all the new features are interesting but the recaps are what keeps me coming back.

I’m really hoping someone picks up Mother. Lots of shows ending soon and new ones beginning so here’s hoping more are recapped in this next batch.

Watching just enough but not too much so you don‘t run out of WPL episodes until the new ones are translated while also sneaking around the fan wall trying to avoid spoilers is such a tiring process

In my head I keep telling myself : ‘Step Away From The Wall’ in my best police officer imitation voice. Not working – evidently. It seems a long wait till Tuesday…

That’s what I tried to do when I first started watching it 3 weeks ago and here I am now…sub-less. Boo.
I wish you all the luck dude!

I can already tell I‘ll have such a hard time letting go of WPL.

Man I have a bad feeling. Leave Captain yoo and this boy alone show!

I can‘t believe I‘m already at episode 11 of Prison Playbook. Somewhere between ep. 3 and 5 my investestment shot from 1 to 1000 and now I‘m struggling to slow down until all episodes are out. 🤦🏽‍♀️

THIS IS SO ME. I just found myself at the end of episode 10 before 2018 ended. I binged everything in two days. I couldn’t believe myself. They just latched onto my heart!

    3

      They’re too precious!
It’s taking my all not to watch the rest of the episodes. I don’t want to finish and then wait until next week!

hahahah everytime Sohn Oh Gong goes in action, I imagine Dae Woong (LSG’s character in MGIAG) doing it xD As if Dae Woong is in the drama, not LSG hahaha, there’s this specific pose which reminds me everytime lol

    4
    2

YES! I think the same, I imagine that Son Oh Gong is Dae Woong finally making it to the big time and Mi Ho is somewhere on set eating meat hehe

      5
      3

I love it! Hahaha. Or she could be one of the stunt people (assuming everything the show still allowed her to have her powers back), so they could have a reason to be together during work hours.

        3
        0

EXACTLY! It’s that pose of his whenever he kills the demons xD then I imagine him (Dae Woong) being wimpy bts lol

        2
        1

It would be so meta if LSG did a cameo as that character ~ say DAE Woong is now contracted with Ma Wang, one of the few human entertainers because he’s used to supernatural shenanigans

          2
          0

LMAO I‘m glad I‘m not the only one looking for wimpy Woongah in Son Oh Gong. A cameo with Shin Min Ah as a „fox demon“ would be so hilarious!! I‘m already wondering where she would be on the demons hierarchy 😄

        2
        1

And Miho would be the only demon not interested in eating the Samjang xD

          2
          0

Yessss, I totally imagine the same thing all the time, haha, what with Dae-woong being an action star! That and the rooftop room looks so similar to the one from MGIAG.

So I‘m totally the kind of person who could venture in a frustrating 2 hours google quest to find a specific drama OST and end up with nothing (let‘s say..ahem like right now). So big question: Is there this one big website that I just haven‘t come across or do all beanies go through this painstaking process? 😅

Wish I was as persistent as you: for me its youtube or bust lol

If the song or instrumental is nowhere to be found, my sister somehow converts drama scenes or trailers into mp3 (don’t ask me about the technology involved, I have no idea). This has the interesting result that sometimes it includes bits of conversations or other noises. I can’t listen to the Moon Lovers OST now without hearing Wang So go ‘don’t come near me ever again’ and Hae Soo ‘I just want to survive, is that so wrong?’

    1
    1

Lol I did this a few times too but these conversation bits in the middle would always get me out of the moment. But in this case I‘ve been replaying the scene where hyung learns of Cho Dal Po‘s real identity non-stop I might as well convert it into mp3 ^^

I could’ve sworn that a couple of our fellow Beanies mentioned not so long ago, that there is a site that lists all ost’s. I wish I could remember what it was!!

I need to start writing some of this stuff down. 📝

Wow I just watched the first episode of Padam Padam and this is definitely not what I expected. The (anti-) hero is volatile and slightly unhinged but in an engaging way and there were scenes which were decidedly shocking compared to to the tame dramas of these days. It’s so different. How come characters these days are all so cookie-cutter and predictable and nobody dares to do some risque choices in their dramas anymore?? Maybe I‘m watching the wrong dramas?

8
2

I think all drama-“eras” have their tropes especially regarding protagonists and antogonists, but there’s usually a few dramas every year that take a risk 🙂 Out of the ones I’ve seen this year:

Lookout took some pretty big risks regarding its protagonists’ personalities, lots of moral ambiguity and such.
Chief Kim had some fun, unhinged and different characters.
TLAHL was sort of cookie cutter in some ways, but the male lead wasn’t.
Currently airing Wise Prison Life also seems to be more out of the ordinary, but it’s only a few eps in at this point.

    2

i liked this drama very much… it was different, quieter, esoteric… but to be honest, i liked it mainly because of Kim Bum’s scenes with his WINGS… O.M.G.

    worth every minute.

Saaaame. I hope another good drama comes his way soon. Movies are all well and good but you have to wait so long for them and they’re just not the same viewing experience.

    7
    1

What genre would you like to see him in next?
I guess I would watch it for him but yeah a drama is 10 times better

      2
      1

Oh gosh, I don’t even know. I would probably watch him in anything so I don’t even care about the genre. Character-wise, though, it would be cool for it to be a very different character from Se-hee (but still awesome). Something that really makes him jump off the screen a la SUFBB

Guys can someone please explain to an love illiterate person what just happened in BTIOF because I’m all kinds of confused. More in the comments.

So I don‘t really get it. From what I got Ji Ho wanted to end the marriage (because it was too burdensome) but not her relationship with SH no? Then why did she leave? She seemed to be waiting for SH to say something but if she knew about his non-proposal all along then she already knew he wants to be together with her no?
And why did SH let her go when he was (almost) ready to „confess“ to her just last episode?
It just doesn‘t add up and frankly it feals a bit like useless against because.. why can‘t you just freaking TALK?

    6
    3

      *angst

      2
      0

I understood it as Ji Ho not wanting the basis of their relationship to be their fake marriage. When she said ‘all those sound the same to me’ – regarding the three options for the proposal, it’s like she felt that Se Hee might be proposing because its comfortable being married to her(note that he still doesn’t speak about love, just that let’s stay married), but now that she loves him, she wants him to love her back, for love’s sake and not for marriage. That’s why she says later to Se Hee’s mother that ‘I don’t think marriage is sacred. Love is sacred.’ So she must be planning to start over, and for that they have to get out of this existing landlord-tenant/fake husband-wife relationship.
I think Se Hee’s just slow in coming to terms with his feelings and what to do about them. He let her go because he thinks that’s what she wants, and just goes back to his old life – which he finds hard now. Even I didn’t get why they didn’t talk about it, though – because they’ve been good at that so far. Ah well, just one episode more – hopefully we’ll get all our answers there!

      7
      3

Yup, I also don’t understand why they didn’t talk about what they both wanted from their relationship.

I could give SH a pass, bc given his history, I can sort of understand why he would clam-up at the tiniest of signs that he’s hurting a loved one…but I wish JH had been as firm and honest with him as she was to her in-laws.

        5
        0

ok this is also as far as i understood too. she wanted to start over new. but my tears! my tears! 😭😭😭

        3
        0

She may have felt that any input on her side may influence him and whatever he said after that may have been to keep her happy so as to keep the status quo since he obviously doesnt like change. She realizes that he cares about her but probably doesn’t know how much is being influenced by the contract and living together.

        4
        1

Exactly. Also, like she tells Se Hee’s mother, she doesn’t want to baby sit Se Hee’s feelings anymore – he is an adult and has to deal with them himself. I think this might be Ji Ho’s way of forcing the issue, of whether Se Hee’s feelings for her are as strong as hers are for him. As she mentions when she leaves, it’s like she’s giving them time in this ‘intermission’ to reflect over what happened in the first half, and to plan what to do in the second half of their relationship. But only one episode is left, so I fear the show’s just going to end on hazy hopes for the future, without too many details of their budding relationship. 😕

          6
          2

Oh. I hadn’t even thought of that. I’m all for open endings it I want something a little more definate for these two.

            4
            0

Yeah, I don’t mind open endings, but I like to leave a show with the main leads comfortable and happily in love with each other. Woori couple is still so formal and careful around each other – I would like it if they developed more along the lines of the ‘date’ scenes of ep 12.

            5
            0

So here is how I see it:
      – JH left, precisely because even after everything…SH didn’t actually tell her his feelings. I think even though she knows from other people or has heard about his past, she wants to be personally invited into his Room 19 by SH HIMSELF.
      – I think SH let her go, because he thought it would be selfish of him. He’s afraid that expressing his feelings might be burdensome for her and hold her back from her newfound independence…. which I kinda understand, bc after all JH is younger than him. SH has experienced a lot in life, but she hasn’t. I think he wants her to have that time for herself, if that’s what she wants.

      10
      1

After watching ep 15, I felt that Se Hee’s room 19 is Ji Ho. Like she entered the room without him knowing, and once she leaves, he felt empty and starts to miss her, both in real life and in his room 19

For all the JDrama-Beanies here. I never watched one. Which ones would you recommend?

What are you in the mood for? My absolutely favourites are Tonbi, Tenno no ryoriban and Fuben na benriya.

Comedy/romance – Nobunaga Concerto, High School Samurai, Bitter Blood

    Crazy – Kazoku Game

Slice of life/melo/romance – Soredemo ikite yuku, Soratobu Kouhoushitsu

Mystery – Subete ga F ni naru, N no tameni

Sorry, Scratch out Subete ga F, I dropped that one. A Haha ^^

Oooh, Kazoku Game is GOOD. I watched it while it was airing and loved it! You’re totally right that it is crazy. Don’t go into it expecting anything realistic, but it’s definitely a fun, wild ride and says some interesting things about family dynamics.

Yup. I actually still haven’t seen all of it but it’s surprisingly memorable. There’s no forgetting what you’ve seen once you’ve seen it.

      Thaaanks!
For someone who had BOF as her gateway drama (scared me off effectively for one year 😅) I know how important first impression is.
I heard they’re often not as polished and sparkly as KDramas so maybe something that‘s not too different…for a smooth transition
Which one should be my first? 😀

      2
      1

You heard right – the polish and sparkles are absent. ^^ Jdoramas can be truly bleak sometimes, ordinary people in an extraordinary, drama-worthy situation for a brief moment in their lives before turning ordinary again.

The sparkly K-drama format doesn’t work so well with J-dramas but ‘Nobunaga Concerto’ (Oguri Shun, time travel, samurai, great OST) might be a good start? Bitter Blood (estranged father-son detective pair, comedy, some romance) is also a bit more general – could have been a Kdrama as well, but is distinctly Japanese.

My list is at least two years old though. ^^ I haven’t seen any J-doramas from around after the last quarter of 2015.

Yikes about BOF. I watched a few episodes with friends years before I got into J-doramas. Terrible stuff. I do not understand the popularity.

        1

You know what maybe the best way is to embrace the ordinariness and jump in heads first into the most typical jdorama 😀
I‘m a huge fan of Misaeng and other painfully relateable dramas so I‘ll probably love the bleakness 😄 Is there an japanese equivalent for Misaeng?
No problem I‘m learning how old really is gold what with me mostly rewatching old kdramas these days.
Also yes BOF is crazy 😄

          1

I’m not as well versed as many other J-drama watching beanies. Having said that, I recently watched Final Fantasy XIV: Dad of Light and really loved it. It explores the rekindling of the relationship between a father and son through video games. It’s a lot more awesome and deep than the premise sounds.

I’m assuming you’re a foodie like me. If that’s the case, I really love Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories. It’s part of the Midnight Diner series. Each episode, a different main dish is featured alongside a new story based on one or more of the restaurant’s diners.

I LOVE let‘s eat so Midnight Diner is definitely on my list now! Thanks 😀

It’s actually one of my favorite shows I’ve ever seen. I really need to rewatch it!!!

Nodame Cantabile! This was my gateway drug to Asian dramas of any sort, and I still love it to bits. Amazing classical music soundtrack — it makes me happy just hearing any of the pieces at any time.

Romance between two music students. He dreams of being a world famous conductor, but can’t leave Japan due to crippling fears. She wants to teach kindergarten. He is a neat freak. She is a slob. He is a perfectionist and works hard to be the Best. She is a natural talent, but as sloppy in her music as she is in her personal habits.

    And they are great together!

She pulls him out of his depression and reintroduces him to the joy of music. He helps her harness her talent to reach her full potential and teaches her how to do the work. They are better people together than they are apart.

And, of course, there is a delightful cast of quirky side characters.

Be warned, however, that is drama is VERY over-the-top and cartoony. The manga roots show through loud and clear. I love it, but if you are expecting the afore mentioned jdorama gritty realism, this is not it. 😉

The Truman Show! I watched this so many times as a kid.
As regards to W, I spent that entire show making comparisons to various American movies and shows lol. Probably why I didn’t find it as original or great as everyone else… Maybe I’ve seen too much lol and there are no new stories left for me to hear 😂😱

Good morning beanies have a great sunday! Meanwhile I can’t decide whether to continue watching Reply88 or watching Silence of the Lambs 🤦🏽‍♀️

You could always do both. 🙂 Watch an episode of Answer Me ’88 and then watch Silence of the Lambs. You’ll get both heart- warming feelings and chills down your spine. Why not?
