Beanie level: Noble idiot

A week into 2023 & I’ve already watched 3 dramas… Through the darkness, Happiness & DP.
I really thought the 2nd season was already out & now I have nothing to watch.

Off to a cheery new year, are you?

And did you catch the Easter Egg in the end credits of the DP finale?

    3
    2

I didn’t stick through it. Off to rectifying it now

      0

OMG I was not expecting that at all. I’m in shock right now.

Yes, serial killers, zombies, bullying & overall horrible people, the year definitely started bright

      2

All excellent dramas but I don’t know if I would want to squeeze them all I in one week. However I can recommend a cdrama in cops/mystery titled THE DISAPPEARING CHILD (2022) which I am now watching. It has 12 episodes and I am watching it on iQIYI. It has been really engrossing so far (through 4 episodes).
Also I will be looking forward to D.P. 2. It is my favorite Jung Hae-in drama. His physicality was outstanding. TTD was one of my 2022 favorites and HAPPINESS (2021) was terrific. 3 great choices.

    4
    1

It’s been a while since I’ve watched a Cdrama, I’ll look into it.
Yes definitely really dark I don’t what got into me.
Jung Hae In is really great in this but Prison Playbook & captain Yoo has a special place in my heart

I’m already done with Through the darkness.
It was an overall excellent drama, the scenes where they were talikng to the different killers were so heartbreaking… to think that there are actual peopple like that & knowing there are similar cases in real life is frightening.
I loved how KNG slowly opened up & made new friends. It was great seeing him realize he was loved & not alone.
I really hope there will be a 2nd season!

Happy new year everyone! I’m coming out of a long slump, I’m slowly catching up with some Kim Nam Gil in Through the darkness first

2020 MIDYEAR DRAMA CHALLENGE

1. Best drama so far : Watcher (2019). Omg this is amazing! I love it! I wanna rewatch it now! So good! Seriously it’s great! Watch it if you haven’t.
2. Best scene : The birthday scene in Run On
3. Favorite OTP : Seo DanAh & Lee Younghwa. I loved these 2 in Run On.
4. Favorite OST : Run On. This was definitely hard to chose. I love Bong Hwana from Norazo too (Mr Queen)
5. Dramas dropped : It’s okay not to be okay, River where the moon rises. Not that many I have 2 on indefinite hold though: Signal & Save me 2
6. Hate-watches : I don’t even know why I watched it honestly, definitely for the bean. Sisyphus & Vincenzo
7. Dramas many loved but you didn’t : Mr Queen, it wasn’t bad but not as good as it seems everyone thinks it is for me. Six Flying Dragons, not bad either, there just was way too many filler episodes, 20 episodes too much.
8. Drama you loved but most didn’t : I’m pretty sure everybody enjoyed the ones I liked.
9. Drama you’ve rewatched this year : I’ve rewatched half of It started with a kiss 1. A beanie was rewatching it, & seeing it on the fanwall made me want to rewatch it too. I think it might have been @isthatacorner
10. The last drama you’ve finished watching : I’ve finished Beyond evil last week.

9
1

Is Taxi Driver good? I’ve read reviews saying the ending is bad & the 2nd half not as good… I don’t know whether I should watch it or not.
I’m looking for a new drama & it’s the only one interests me besides Undercover . I don’t know which one I should watch.

2
11

The first half was good but since the writer change on episode 11, I didnt quite like where the story headed so put in on hold on the last 4 episodes.

    1
    1

I didn’t know they changed writers, it’s really weird when they do that in the middle. It changes the flow. Thanks I’ll give it a go & at worst I’ll put it on hold indefinitely at midpoint.

      0
      1

Ikr. It really ruined the flow of the story. Similar to what happened with The Uncanny Counter.

        1
        1

Omg I remember! It was so weird suddenly. Then I saw the news,& realized OK that’s why it’s like that.

          0
          0

Try out the 1st two episodes! I’m undecided on whether it was good, but it was quite exciting and i enjoyed the acting esp Lee Je Hoon & Pyo Ye Jin.

    1
    2

Same here. I watched premiere and wasn’t comfortable with the use of violence (and I’m totally ok with the use of violence as a narrative resource, but here I found it needless). But it is a fact that beanies have been enjoying it.

      1
      1

I didn’t know it was that violent (I try to avoid much of the promo, I like to go into drams knowing almost nothing about it). Thank you, I’ll try watching it

        0
        1

Thanks, I’ll try it out then ! I need something exciting 🙂

I liked it. The change of writer didn’t bother me. I think I liked it because the FL was more implicated with the other characters.

Day 4: First Drama Ever Watched

It started with a kiss.
My friend was watching it & she would recap me everything. I couldn’t wait anymore for her recap so I just started watching it. I finished it in a week-end

Hello everyone! Should I watch Tree with deep roots or Six Flying Dragons first?

1
6

I suggest watching Tree first because that’s how they aired. I felt like it works better because that was the original intention by the writers.

    3
    4

      Second this.

      1
      0

      Thank you 😊 😃

      1
      0

Oh I never knew that. Both are on my list but I didn’t know they were related.

      0
      1

Tree aired first and is about the promulgation of Hangul. The main character is King Sejong the Great. SFD came a few years later and is about how Goryeo fell and Joseon started. The main character is Lee Bang-won (King Sejong’s father). SFD is a prequel to Tree. 🙂

        2
        0

Ditto here too. I watched TWDR but still have to watch SFD. I don’t remember who told me that though. Probably @kiara!

Beanies how do you deal / shake off with post drama ending emptiness?

I’m done with Mr Sunshine & now I’m also sad 😢 on top of empty

4
2

By watching sth else. The emptiness does go away when you get sth better or addictive to watch.

    4
    0

by re-watching a show I loved. usually good fluff.

    3
    0

When I watch dramas wether it’s live or binging. I always watch each ep as soon as it’s out; one after the other. But for the very last ep I always wait before starting it, sometimes for weeks even months. I feel empty once I finsh it so maybe I want to lengthen it as much as I can

6
0

I’m watching Mr Sunshine. I have only 3 episodes left. On one hand I want to finish it on the other hand I want to stop here. I’m scared about the ending

2
3

    Not my favourite drama.
I liked it, but I have to admit I FF most part of the last two episodes.
    Also, I cried like a baby 😞

    1

I’m watching ep 23 right now. I’m also crying 😢

      0

I did LOVE it! Such a fantastic drama!
The actings are fire and the cinematography is wonderful!
I cried hell lot while watching and it took me dayssss to watch the last two episodes because it was too painful!

I’m having a KitKat overdose. I ate way more than I’d like to admit, in 24 hours I’ve eaten more than within the last 10 years. 😬🤢

To make you feel better, I made cookies last week. They were gone within a day, and I ate 12/23 of them. Like, they were all I ate that day.

CLOY: I bought a huge bag of KitKats today… PPL worked

21
6

I keep staring at the kitkat section of the snacks shelf at work. I resisted temptation today, but I fear I’m not strong enough. Do I even want to be?

    3
    1

Just join the weak side 😏

      2
      1

I’m not working until Friday so I’m safe for now. That stupid red packaging was calling out to me though.

        1
        1

I love the PPL in the show, but I couldn’t stop wondering, who would buy KitKat in Switzerland, where you can indulge in the finest and most delicious chocolate in the world??

    4
    1

I get it sometimes I just want junky, chemically tasting food. But that may just be me. I was gonna say maybe they have special KitKats there but they seemed normal

      2
      0

I started Lookout today since it was well-loved here. (I didn’t want to start anything new but failed with no SL or CLOY). I didn’t like the 1st hour… does this show get better as it goes on does it stay like this (same pace/story/directing) till the end?

2
2

It is pretty fast paced and we get a lot of information in the first hour. I would say check out the 2nd hour because we get introduced to all the main players and an idea of what to expect from the drama in the coming episodes. Do-han is very unlikeable in the first episode, but he is such an interesting character to watch.

    4
    0

I loved it from the beginning. The side characters get more and more interesting as does the lead male character.

    3
    0

So.. I’ve finished Designated survivor It’s really really great!! Son Seok Gu & the rest of the cast were amazing; it was well adapted, well filmed & produced. (I haven’t watched the original) I never thought I’d be into a drama about actual politics but it got me really hooked.

9
15

Finished my 1st drama of the year 🎉

    2
    0

I loved it so much as well. I didn’t watch the original one, either.
Plus it had Son Seok-Koo and he’s a total scene stealer.

    4
    0

    ha ha ha
I find it very telling that you started the 2nd sentence with Son Seok Gu’s name (2nd Lead) and not the main lead (what’s his name?? lol). I loved him (too) sooooo much, that his scenes were the ones I looked fwd to the most !

    2
    2

      JI JIN HEE! 💗

      2
      1

He did a superb job, but… Son SeokGu… THE BEST SCENE STEALER, hahahahahaha

        3
        2

He outright stole the show. But imho, Secretary Cha would not be able to shine if Acting President Park hadn’t been so inexperience. 😉

          3
          0

I’m planning to watch everything he’s ever been on 😍

          1
          0

😁😁 I actually watched this show because of him in the 1st place. I discovered him through Be Melo & I just needed more. Same. He’s truly amazing I can’t wait for his future lead roles. I want more screentime!

      2
      1

I discovered him in Sense8, and loved him.
You should watch Matrimonial Chaos, in case you haven’t. The drama is really good, and touches marriage life in a very different way as we see them in dramas. I highly recommend it. All the four main characters are just fantastic.

        2
        2

Thanks I haven’t I’ll move it up higher on my list 😊

          1
          0

I discovered him in Matrimonial Chaos too and then belatedly realized he was the same guy in Sense8 and that just solidified my love for him !

          2
          0

SSG was a scene stealer in Be Melodramatic as well. He appeared briefly towards the end but I still think of him fondly :3

    3
    2

Yes, I loved this couple I wish we got more of them

      2
      1

I seriously thought he was just there for a 1 day cameo but he brought sooooo much to each scene that the Writers could just not get enough of him. ha ha ha!

      2

I can’t post comments unless it’s on the fanwall. It’s been a few days now, I only realised it now since they don’t appear in my comments. Am I the only one? Anybody has an idea why it’s happening?

0
8

You mean you can’t post on an open thread, recap or anything? You should be able to see those posts in your “comment” section.

    0
    1

Yes it somehow only works on the fanwall. It acts like I posted my comment, but there’s nothing on the actual page or in my “comment” section. Doesn’t matter if it’s my own comment or a reply.

      0
      1

Time for @mary’s assistance, I believe!

        1
        1

Thank you for tagging me, Ally! It looks like the comments were eaten up by spam filter. We have problems accessing the spam section for the past week so we weren’t able to go inside there and fish out the genuine beanie comments unless we know whose comment to look for.

Sorry, @sibel! Your comments should be up now. Hopefully the filter will remember not to mark them as spam in future. (If a comment gets eaten by the spam filter, try not to post it again repeatedly within the same minute. The spam will think you’re a quick-typing bot and be even more convinced you’re not human. Hehe)

TMI: We couldn’t open the spam section because the millions of comments on DB is starting to bog down the database. Our dev team is looking for ways to lighten up the load without having to move to a larger server. :((( Hopefully they find a solution soon. Though my eyes are thankful this week that I don’t have to sort through hundreds of spam a day @___@ LOL

          2
          4

Thanks, Mary! Wow, Would it help for people to thin down their fan walls to decrease data? I know there’s a ton of memory there that no one ever sees again.

            1
            0

No need for that. Fanwalls and comments are separate entities. The comments and posts (of which there are 10+ years’ worth) are the ones that need optimization.

            1
            0

Thank you very much! I’ll do that in the future. I can’t imagine the workload that this represents, I didn’t know you did that, in my head it was done by some kind of AI. That must be exhausting. 화이팅!

            1
            0

@ally-le I just read my last reply. Sorry if it sounded too curt. I was typing on my phone. Thank you for the offer, but you don’t have to do that (ie delete/lessen posting). And we wouldn’t want you to! Also, the sh*tty pagination isn’t a feature, it’s a bad UI. LOL We should fix that sometime so y’all don’t have to click “next page” 100+ times. T___T

And thank you @sibel for understanding. :’)

Is W really that bad?
I didn’t watch it & I feel like I’m missing out.
When I asked people or looked online it seems like it’s either one of the best thing they’ve ever watched or hours of their life they can’t get back.
Everything I’m watching is quite dark (Watcher, Life, VIP) & I need some bright energy with Extraordinary You ending.
Should I not watch it? Or just skip some ep or something?

1
23

So I don’t know about W but if you want some bright energy why not give weightlifting fairy kim bok ju a chance?

    2
    1

Thank you but for some reasons I don’t like the 2 main actors. I tried giving it a shot since everybody here loved it but I just couldn’t.

      0
      1

Weight lifting fairy gets great around the 4 episode mark and remains consistently good. It isn’t extraordinary but definitely light. W, however isn’t light. In fact it demands attention. The firat 8 episodes are great but it took a turn in the last 8 episodes. It wasn’t that bad but when all of us were live watching it, we had really high hopes for it after the first episode but it didn’t live up to it. But I do think that if people marathon it, then you may not feel that way because there isn’t much room for discussion and pondering. I don’t think Life is dark compared to W. But if you want to try, do so, because you’ll love the first half and honestly the second isn’t that bad either.

        5
        1

Oh really it looked so much brighter & happy than Life. I’m definitely going to binge it if I give it a go. I think I’ll just watch the first half & if I don’t like what’s next just drop it then. Thank you

          0
          2

The second half of W isn’t light or bright at all. Some scenes were pretty creepy and unsettling. Have you watched Memories of Alhambra? W is from the same writer and it suffered from the same problems as MoA. Great but not detailed ideas and the end was unsatisfactory and awful.

I vouch for Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo as well. Just like you I didn’t understand why all Beanies loved this drama so much, I avoided it for 3 years and looked down on the main actors. But I was very wrong. The story is so heartwarming, the writing and acting was all superb from the start to the end. I actually regret not watching it live back then.

            5
            0

@cherryinbloom I didn’t realize it was from the same writer, ok thank you I think I can guess how, what kind of mess it’s gonna be at the end then

I’ll try again for WFB a bit later since you loved it so much

            1
            0

i dropped it after 8 eps cause i was busy at that time, but what i saw was fun/funny/interesting. i think the ones that didn’t like it had issues with the 2nd half.

    1

If you want something light and absolutely delightful check out Pegasus Market. It’s airing right now and it is TOTALLY worth every hour. I can’t recommend it enough. And there are other beanies here who are also enjoying it.

    0
    1

Yeah I’ve seen posts about it but it’s just not my kind of humour

      0
      0

I liked W but it definitely isn’t my favorite drama out there. It was entertaining and there was good chemistry between the leads, but it did get a bit crazy near the end.

For light-hearted dramas I suggest Put Your Head on My Shoulder. It’s a cute cdrama with very little angst or drama. Just about a cute couple falling in love. I also suggest Secret Life of my Secretary. It’s tons of fun with lots of entertaining characters. Also had great chemistry between the leads.

I also agree with Weightlifting Fairy.

    4
    1

I loved put your head on my shoulder. I haven’t watched Secret Life of my secretary though I’ll check it out.

      2
      0

I don’t think you can really call W bad – the first half was an excellent drama, the second half was fine but lost its way as the writer didn’t really know what they were doing. It’s totally worth seeing, because the leads are great and it’s an interesting concept for a show nor does it do anything egregiously bad in the latter half. It’s just that the latter half seems to be making it up as it goes along rather than have the tight plotting and world building of the first half. It doesn’t commit character assassination or pull the focus to something stupid or suddenly introduce random new plot twists (as far as I recall).

    6
    1

I agree with everything that’s been said about W… and yet somehow it is still one of my Top 3 KDramas.

    As for happy/bright dramas:

Fight for my Way – this was a fun funny ride, with a friends to lovers plot.

Love in the Moonlight – my memory is a bit fuzzy with this one, Park Bo Gum is just toooooooo pretty in here.

Marriage, Not Dating – this one is a quirky contract dating romance. It’s utterly enjoyable.

Queen In Hyuns Man – this is from the same writer as W (if memory serves rme right) but it doesn’t suffer from the same problems. But instead of merging comic-RL it merges the past-RL. It is truly a masterpiece.

Something about 1% (2016) – The episodes are only 40min long, which means the episodes are very tightly written and almost entirely focused on the main couple, who are very delightfully at odds in the beginnigs.

Also, I second or third WFKBJ. You will not regret watching this if you make it past the initial few episodes.

    3
    1

I looved Fight for my way. Queen In Hyun’s Man & Marriage, not dating are 2 of my favorite dramas of all time! Now I’m rewatching bits of QIH’M On YouTube 🥰

      I’ll watch Something about 1% when I’m done with W 😊
I don’t really like sageuks unless they’re fusion but I’m trying to get into it. I’ll start with Love in the Moonlight then, now I miss Park Bogum

      1
      0

W was one of the shows that I couldn’t resist and live watched. The first part of the show was awesome like really awesome. I remember rewatching the episodes each week before watching the new episodes that came out. But then episode 8(?) came and it turned into everything scary and creepy and yet despite that W is still one of my all time favs!
I was able to love it even with the genre change.

    1
    1

I personally got really confused in the middle of it. It suddenly became really complicated and dramatic and I wasn’t a fan of it. It was okay up to that point. Don’t feel bad about missing out on it until now. Just give the first episode a try and see if you like it.

    0
    1

Oh thank you I’ll just give it a go then 🙂

I LOVE W. My only gripe with it is that the last ep is completely lack-luster. I rewatch it a lot, and usually ff through the last ep.

I’ve finished watching EY 13 & I fastforwarded most of it. Juda & Dohwa are the only characters I can stand.
Haru is just bland to me, I don’t know wether it’s because of the writer or the actor himself or both.
I don’t buy Kyung’s love for Danoh, caring yes definitely but suddenly I feel like his actions are more about his love for her and no longer about him wanting to keep his place & not loose all his power & characteristics to Haru. It’s rushed, weird & unnatural.
I liked spunky, energetic & confident DanOh better, now it’s just about dating, aegyo, crying. I get that it’s not easy for her but still

The drama has definitely lost its touch, originality & I don’t think its gonna get any better

10
2

I’ve been thinking for a while about Haru. He actually doesn’t have a purpose to live outside of Kyung and Dan Oh. He’s either Kyung’s servant or Dan Oh’s lover.

    7
    0

I feel the same. I’ve been fast forwarding for several episodes now. I liked the meta in the beginning but the Haru/Danoh//Kyung storyline quickly became just as cringey and cheesy, if not more so, than the dramas they were making fun of.

I need advice: should I watch AWL or WATCHER first?
For those who watched AWL is it a tearjerker?

2
5

Depends on your mood. They are both good dramas and worth watching, imho. Awl is office/work place drama, but not the boring kind. Subject matter could be depressing. Watchers is a mystery thriller. Both don’t have romance or lovelines.

    2
    1

Thank you! I’ll start WATCHER First then since I’m not ready to take in the harshness of AWL right now

      1

Not sure about Watcher but Awl was amazing. It wasn’t tearjerker but to be honest, it was hard to watch. I couldn’t go past first three episodes because it was all too realistic.

I didn’t see Watcher, but I saw AWL and liked it very much!
