Tonight I was hungry for curd rice (you beanies from South India understand) and missing the times I got to celebrate Diwali with my Indian friends in Minnesota, so I looked up how to cook it.

Well, one thing led to another and after several YouTube videos on how to cook, I wanted to see some of my favorite Indian dance videos from Ed Sheeran’s “The Shape of You”.

You know that rabbit hole that is YT?

This dance video came up “Love is Love” and I was reminded of all our beanies who may suffer from who they love, but also those of us who have been smitten with “The Untamed” bug and thought you all might appreciate this.

It is so beautiful between the music and the dance.
Sigh – Love is Love everyone!

And Happy Diwali to all our Beanies who celebrate it! maybe I’ll have my own puja tonight

    Happy Diwali 🙂
Not from South India (I’m from a northern state), but I understand the craving for curd rice. Hope you were able to eat it. ^^

I made some this weekend but didn’t have all the ingredients and though it was passable, it wasn’t the same. I’ll go to the local Indian grocery to get curry leaves and other things.
Funny story: years ago I went to a party with my “Indian family” and tried some of the usual curd rice in the buffet. However the one person added chilis that burned my mouth so I couldn’t taste anything the rest of the night. If I remember right, she was originally from Bombay – but I always asked what dishes Simi brought to the parties.

But curd rice well done is heaven.
Yes, I miss those Diwali celebrations……

Can you tell I’m feeling a bit homesick tonight? (even tho I only lived in that part of the country for almost 25 years?)

Aww. *Sends hugs across the screen*

Also the chilli story made me laugh. 😂 I have a low tolerance as well & am familiar with that sort of thing. It really burns.

The Indian grocery store is a good place to start. I hope it turns out yummy!

I’ll let you know how it turns out this weekend okay? And how is your hangover? Did you drink lots of water?
yes I am homesick for my Indian “intentional family” in the midwest….
          but NOT Simi’s dishes…

          1

Yes please 🙂 Do let me know.
So no hangover! 🙂 Maybe because I did as you suggested and drank a TON of water. Also I was mostly REALLY sleepy & hoping my speech didn’t slur but it wasn’t a very noticable thing, is what I was told later by a friend so that’s great.

I had to google curd rice, and it looks delicious. Unfortunately I can’t eat dairy, but a curd rice recipe led me to a recipe for lemon rice and now I know what I’ll be making for lunch tomorrow. So, thanks!

    And Happy Diwali to Beanies.

I’d pick lemon rice over curd rice any day. Much more yum! ^^ (not that I can stand much dairy either)

Can share recipe? And is it slightly sour/tangy?

I’m a terrible cook, so let me see if i can get my mum’s recipe this evening. Yes, its quite a bit tangy – lemon rice tastes distinctly lemon-y. Not so much that you struggle to eat it of course, but its a heavy, obvious lemon taste, not a mild, indiscernible, back of the tongue flavor.

            @outofthisworld – this is the one: https://www.indianhealthyrecipes.com/lemon-rice-recipe/

My mum was once a terrible cook like me. She retired about 3 & a half years ago & her cooking has improved massively, but you know, she’s no chef. So this recipe itself is objectively good 😀 Because the lemon rice she makes is fantastic!

            Thanks @greenfields

I’ve bookmarked this and will try soon. My family is loving basmati rice at the moment so I’m super keen to try something new.

Thank god for the internet. Our parents didn’t have access to online recipes or sharing of recipes in communities like this. Everything is handed down the family, from mother to daughter or MIL to DIL and so forth.

I have no flair for cooking, some people just have the knack of knowing the little things that adds the extra oomph. But I think anyone can cook to survive, LOL. I’m blessed to have a helper who cooks really well and can whip up a dish just by me sharing the recipe with her. My late mother was a great cook, I wish I have inherited half her ability. This said, there’s always something comforting about mom’s cooking regardless of the skill!

I bookmarked a lemon rice earlier but then saw @greenfields was sharing her mom’s recipe, clicked the link, and there was the recipe I bookmarked. I’m glad it has your seal of approval G.

@outofthisworld, I’m not a good cook. I’m a disinterested, don’t make me do this kind of cook. Unless I’m craving something. The best thing about adult children is I’m no longer legally obligated to make sure they’re fed every day.

@greenfields – I looked at your link and it’s the same web site I used for my curd rice!!!
I LOVE being able to type in what I’m looking for albeit a recipe, gardening question or even car problem and I find the answer(s)!
            thank you!

Do you have a recipe for naan? I am confused by what I read on the internet. Some use yeast, some don’t . Some use baking powder/baking soda which are two completely different things.

One of my gastronomic delights is a good fluffy naan but not many restaurants can achieve it. Well, at least they do taste better than any of my feeble attempts.

Adding tomato rice to the list cuz it’s my fav 😂
            (But I like all kinds ^^ )

@egads @stpauligurl @outofthisworld – if you do make lemon rice, do let me/us know how it goes
@fatcat007 is right – tomato rice is nice too, but I’m a lemon rice fan. 😀

Outtie – for naan, we use “maida”. I had to look it up in English, & it seems its called white flour/refined wheat flour. It’s not naan without maida.

I’ll check with our Indian grocers, they may carry the flour.

@outofthisworld of course I googled naan recipes, and there were several sites with recipes how to make – with and without yeast.
I haven’t made it before, but this weekend may be a good cooking weekend for me!
*off to the Indian grocery for curry leaves and those little chilis**

Weirdly i don’t *cook* curd/lemon rice (cuz me lazy :P)
What i do is mix curd (or kadhi, you know 😉 ) with rice & eat it like that haha.😂
Same with lemon, it’s a must with my rice lunch everyday, i just sprinkle lemon juice & salt on my normal rice.

I only take the effort to make tomato rice cuz there’s no other way.

I agree, partially because I agree and partially because I am so annoyed when I cook something amazing and my husband eats some and is like, that was fine and finishes the dinner with curd rice. So based on that, I pick lemon rice because I have a complex 🙂

Unfortunately I ended up finding a video on how to make paratha and one thing led to another.
The first time I had curd rice I thought I’d died and gone to heaven it was so good. My friend is from Mysore and so it might have been different. Thank goodness I can eat dairy…
ooooh lemon rice also sounds good!

    Happy Diwali @stpauligurl!

I just woke up(overslept) and my eyes ain’t good. So I was like “Nice music…not the usual super high energy Indian dance….wow! she carried him! I wouldn’t be able to…..wait………………………………………………….eh…..is that a beard?………………..oh……..the untamed reference…..” Now, I want to see Wang Yibo and Xiao Zhan do this, LOL! Actually, in all seriousness, they can totally pull it off.

I know!! wow he must have been strong!
      But still, it was beautiful.
My son and brother are gay as are many friends of mine – but the untamed, I think really spoke to the love and commitment to each other that comes from true love.

This was beautiful to watch. The editing was wonderful too. My initial impression was that it was a traditional dance ‘couple’, just because of the long hair. But the Love is Love title makes sense in hindsight. I wonder if they blended an ethnic dance with contemporary movements to help the flow (not an expert in dance(s), just curious. I don’t mean to offend!) The sand clouds reminds me of smoke grenades in k-pop music videos or colored dust.

Wasn’t it beautiful? It reminded me of the days in the US when there were so many commercials that stated simply “Love it Love” – no matter who.
I have many more friends who have been in long term (20-35 years) committed relationships and happen to be same-sex couples.
Also I liked the clouds of dust simply as a visual…

Can you image WWX and LZ doing a dance like this? (maybe they would use swords…)

    Happy Diwali!
I couldn’t get into the spirit of the festival this year, unfortunately, for some reason. Maybe because I was really busy right up until the day and there was no time for the enthusiasm to build up.
But we had family over for Bhai Dooj as usual and it was a riot just as it always is. My sister was there for the first time in years and she’d forgotten how to do the…what’s the thing for the brothers? I know what its called in Marathi (ovalna), not in Hindi. Indian Beanies may understand this vague description.
Anyway, she’d forgotten how to do it, so she did it thrice for one brother, because she kept going back to the beginning when she messed up, twice for the next and once for the third. And everyone kept yelling suggestions and teasing her all the while. It was hilarious.
I hope everyone else had a good Diwali!

I am from South India and I am *here* for the curd rice appreciation! There are a few variants of it as well. Folks from one part of South India use pomegranate seeds (along with green chillis) to make it. In my state we just have it with tempering and sun-dried curd chillis (it sounds strange but they’re the BEST)

I see lemon rice got some love as well, have any of you tried tamarind rice? It is tangy and lovely (although we have to eat a lot of it at festivals and it can get a bit much.)

yummm tamarind rice – I’ll look that up later today.
It is morning and I just got up to see all these comments. This time of year is hard for me due to all the holidays – but it was always a special time with my Indian friends and we’d get together for a big Diwali party, thanksgiving and then New Years. They became my “intentional family” after many years.
But I do NOT miss those hidden chili’s in Simi’s bean curd. My mouth hurt for hours!

I love curd rice! & thanks for the warm wishes. Curd rice is actually quite simple to do, it’s really cooling, perfect for humid & summer weather & really fulfilling too.
