I have a huge problem with WWWSK episode 14, YUGE. (What IS wrong with Secretary Kim?!)
The fact that she was planning to resign is what started this whole romance, and it is a weird power dynamic the two have been trying to resolve. But they both believed it was perfectly all right because Kim Mi-so would leave the company and do her own thing and find her true calling and there’d be no more “Vice President” and “Secretary Kim” formalities needed.
It also seemed in this episode that Young-joon really did seem to understand the importance of Mi-so finding her own interests and taking a leap of faith and he was ready to let her go without any resistance. But the fact that Mi-so has changed her mind and decided to stay as his secretary—and that Young-joon didn’t push harder to have her stick to her original decision has me so frustrated. What the heck have they trained Ji-ah for?! Change is a part of life. And it’s not like they’re never going to see each other again! They can still date! And see each other every day! And spend weekends together! Most couples don’t have the luxury of working at the same company together. But also most couples aren’t literally in a boss-secretary dynamic.
If she wants to stay, give her a separate job, maybe running her own department or something (which she is perfectly capable of doing!), that doesn’t have her catering to Young-joon for his every need. I just don’t like this power dynamic. And I don’t like that Mi-so has defaulted and given up trying to find new pursuits. With her rich boyfriend/soon-to-be hubby, she has the opportunity to do what she wants, money no issue. (Heck, I’d love to have that freedom to experiment! She’s making a dumb choice.)
I hope Dad’s serious objection to this relationship includes this factor. I hope he happily gives them his blessing on the condition Mi-so DOES quit her job at Yumyung Group. Please, Show, please please please don’t disappoint me. I loved the message of Mi-so giving up an amazing career that ate up her entire life because SHE WANTED TO LIVE FOR HERSELF AND NOT OTHER PEOPLE. Don’t disappoint me!
It seemed like the drama was heading in a direction that would have Mi So going back to college and finding herself there. I’m hoping that she doesn’t stay–that she does go to college (maybe she can work part time for the company if she wants?) and then comes back–or not–depending on what she’s learned about herself.
I wasnt particularly shocked that Young-Joon didn’t object harder to Mi-So wanting to stay. I’ve long thought that while he’s the boss—Mi So is clearly running the show.
My very first thought to Mi So changing her mind was: What about Kim Ji Ah? Are you going to have TWO secretaries? Is she getting fired because Mi So changed her mind? Maybe Pres Park will finally toss out his incompetent secretary and Ji Ah will go to him.
Yes, there was lots of talk about how Mi-so didn’t go to college and instead went straight into the workforce. I wouldn’t mind if that’s the direction she goes in. And I can see how Young-joon wouldn’t be too pushy with Mi-so right now, especially after he accepted that he needs to be more respectful of her wishes and lower his “speed” to more match hers. But still… the show better have a good resolution because if Mi-so does indeed remain a secretary, I will be very salty. Very. Salty.
And yes, what about Ji-ah?! How’s that going to work, with two secretaries?!
I will join you in the saltiness but I don’t think thats going to happen. To heck with her dad–her sister isn’t going to let that happen. And I honestly don’t think Young-Joon is going to let it happen either. We know that he loves her and wants to be with her every second of every minute but we also know that he’s really trying to put her first and think of her needs first. He’s going to see that she needs to be doing more than what she’s doing. He’ll probably need Pres. Park to push him in to saying it because—yeah. Shes calling the shots here.
And I think that there has to be a further tie in with Young-Joons family. The brother has decided against running away. But right now that storyline feels unfinished but its also just sort of hanging out on the side. Maybe something will happen there. Mi-So helping bring the brother into the company (but hes a writer so he doesnt need that…?) I dont know. But yeah, she cannot stay a secretary. Whats the point of the drama if she does?
There seem to be a few loose ends that the show needs to resolve in the final two episodes. Like you mentioned with Sung-yeon, his storyline does feel unfinished. (I also feel like Lee Tae-hwan was was miscast but also very under-utilized in this show. Maybe for the reason his acting isn’t up tp PSJ’s level and they didn’t want to risk showing too much of that? Idk, I feel like he’s been forgotten in this show just like his character was forgotten during much of his childhood, oof.) I have hope the show will make sure Mi-so does NOT remain a secretary, but the fact that we’re two episodes away from the end and Mi-so has remained a secretary so far up to this point when it would have been refreshing to actually see her experiencing a different life for maybe half the show, makes me a bit nervous. 🙁
I finally finished Forest of Secrets. What. A. Show. A+++. Riveting. Smart writing. Excellent pacing. Epic finale. Amazing acting. Bravo Jo Seung-woo, Yoo Jae-myung, Bae Doo-na, Shin Hye-sun, et al. My emotions were thrown all over the place watching this show, suspecting every single character, and then whenever a big reveal happened—oof, punch to the gut. I really liked these characters, I liked them a whole lot more than I realized, so when anything happened to them, I really felt it. Forest of Secrets is on my list of all-time favorite dramas. It takes a while to build up, but it lays the groundwork so fantastically well. Also—they better go ahead and make season 2, they set the next season up so well with that ending. But until that happens, I guess I’ll just have to watch Life (premiers next week!) and hope to dear goodness it is an amazing show, too (and I don’t even like medical dramas that much…). My hopes are high, though, we’ve got the return of the Forest of Secrets writer, Lee Soo-yeon, and lots of the cast: Jo Seung-woo, Yoo Jae-myung, Lee Kyu-hyung, Eom Hyo-seop, and more!
Wah, been hearing praises for the drama. I plan to marathon this during my vacation to Bohey Dulang this weekend. Been keeping it on the waiting list. Can’t wait to start. A new fan of Jo Seung Woo since I caught his movie the Inside Men.
This was my discovery of Jo Seung Woo and now I want to watch everything he’s been in!

I just realized this is finale week for The Undateables. Sadly, I feel so unsatisfied with this show. It started off as one thing and it’s ending as something completely different. Ah well. At least Namgoong Min is pretty. But this show is a snooze. I’ll finish it ‘cause it’s easy popcorn watching, but I feel a little cheated. (Also, what is this pattern of Hwang Jung-eum’s recent dramas — this and Lucky Romance: they started off promising, then they just fizzled out, and I only hung on for the male lead who was pulling more than his weight.) Sigh. Namgoong Min, you tried. You win some, you lose some.

Well. Now we have the face of the original Manicure Murderer. I knew something was up with the cop who popped up in the beginning of the episode, the one who handed Na-young the papers. We saw him TWICE and I was like, Hmmm, no other cop has ever come in before to deliver stuff on this show, so this is definitely a big red flag. INDEED IT WAS.
I also think he was the one who carried little TaeJoo from the railroad tracks! You cant see his face then but I had a suspicion it was someone from the force since then 🤔
OMG YOU’RE PROBABLY RIGHT. I did think it was odd that a lone officer was the one who found little Tae-joo when the entire rest of the group was somewhere else.
-> Yoo Yeon-seok. This is going to be a regular pattern for my “thoughts” posts. Get used to it.
-> I can’t take these dramatic staring contests seriously. They’re just too indulgent and go on too long. Yes yes yes everyone is very pretty but I don’t think I’ve ever held a person’s gaze that long without saying anything.
-> This is the first drama (and a sageuk at that!) that I can remember that has the woman tell the guy who swung her away from an oncoming vehicle, “I have eyes and ears and can save myself, thanks.” Hooray for Ae-shin’s maid, I love this ajumma!
-> Dong-mae buying candy had me dead.
-> The flashback to young Ae-shin and Dong-mae! So sad, so intense, this could be an entirely different story if it was just about the two of them, a star-crossed lovers / Romeo & Juliet type story. Oh, what a thought!
-> I actually like Kim Min-jung’s character. Kudo Hina is a SMART lady, a flirt, and speaks just as many languages as our boi Eugene. She’d make the best spy ever. I can’t wait to watch her character trajectory as she gets more and more caught up in the political shenanigans, seeing as she runs the place all the important players like to visit.
-> The puns from David McInnis’s character! I appreciate the little jokes the show manages to squeeze in.
-> LIKE all the characters asking if the translator and pawn shop dealer are brothers!!
-> Okay, I officially don’t like Byun Yo-han’s character. He’s a playboy and a gambler and from the way Ae-shin looked at him with disgust at the very end of the episode makes me think she knows his insincere ways. Also, we all know he doesn’t stand a chance.
-> Adding onto that, I feel like out of the three male leads, HE’S the one who could easily go full villain on us!
-> I really like where Eugene is now, holding his former masters at gunpoint. This is what I’m talking about! His emotions are taking control and he, too, feels the need to exact revenge, quite like Dong-mae felt in the last episode. Finally we’re starting to see who Eugene Choi is. I don’t think he’ll actually kill them, that would be a huge political no-no, but I like that he’s a finger’s pull away from personal and political disaster.
-> Park Hyo-shin’s voice during the ending credits gets me. Not only did they spend money on the big stars, they spent money on the soundtrack and somehow coaxed PHS out of his typical hiding.
-> Yoo Yeon-seok. See accompanying screenshots.
YYS is the scene stealer and his role is the most dynamic too but I found BYH good too. He does go well with the fl for obvious reasons. Moreover i think AS does harbour some feelings for him as we learnt in the previous episodes that she does regularly stitch a suit for him. The only thibg I am not feeling is the ml and fl scenes. Apparently they should be intense but I find them lacking and boring. I was glad BYH finally stepped in and according to the teaser I think he will just side with EC, not become evil.
I think BYH is really good, but he’s definitely the least interesting to me (now). Perhaps his character and Ae-shin have some history, and politically they are a good match, but idk, her scowl when she saw him definitely wasn’t the typical “moved to tears because I can’t believe he’s finally back.” And do I think he’ll actually become a real villain? Not really, YYS’s character is much better set up for that trajectory. You’re right, BYH will probably stay a “good” (relatively) guy, but there will be lots of tension because all the guys will be mad in love with Ae-shin and of course only one of them will be lucky enough to receive her heart. And it won’t be BYH!
I think a YYS pairing with Ae Shin would excite me more than a BYH pairing! I haven’t been able to connect to BYH as yet and it’s scary because we have had 4 episodes already!
Yes yes yes YYS as main lead would be my perfect world. Sadly, that’s not how this show is going to play out. Sniff.
And with so much focus on LBH and KTR’s characters, these second and third leads haven’t gotten much to do yet. YYS was absent from ep 1 and most of ep 2, and BYH absent from ep 3 (was he also absent from ep 2? I can’t remember).
Let’s see how it pans out! I am not a huge fan of the writer (I found both DOTS and Goblin, underwhelming) but I am liking it this far! BYH is the only one I can’t connect to! Maybe it’s a way he is portraying Eugene Choi or maybe his indifference to Joseon? I don’t know. BYH is a terrific actor though…
I wasn’t a big fan of DoTS (I watched it almost begrudgingly) but I did enjoy Goblin (though more for the acting than everything else). Perhaps it is Lee Byung-heon’s portrayal of Eugene that is making him hard to connect to… I didn’t start to like him until this fourth episode, and only because of the very last scene that gives him potential to really change and or show his suppressed colors. I haven’t seen LBH in anything, nor Byun Yo-han, so these two aren’t making me starry-eyed yet — they have a lot to live up to, my expectations are pretty high! I have seen YYS and Kim Tae-ri in other stuff, and I am happily pleased by what I’m seeing. 😀
I am curious to know what your thoughts on his last encounter with AS. It seems like something intense between these two was there when she saved him. There must be more to that scene in the carriage. That memory shook AS and we can see she unconciously reacted the same way. Is it because she remembers he said she was just a noble fool who lives a luxury life? And that she was angry with herself for judging him, acting holier than thou, seeing his reaction to her scolding is not what she was expecting, his calm, strong deep gaze telling her who are you to say that to me, yangban agasshi? Or is it simply just fear from those pair of killer gaze? I think I lived and died multiple times when he shot that stare.
The way I interpret it, little Ae-shin took pity on Dong-mae, understanding that he’d probably get killed if he was spotted, and decided to hide him and help him. Perhaps she expected him to be utterly grateful and not say a word out of fear, but instead he mouthed off, insulted her, and wiped his bloody/dirty face on her dress. Perhaps young Dong-mae’s words struck a cord in her that she hasn’t forgotten, and while she does live a luxurious life and has immense pride and expects people to respect her, she definitely is not a fool.
To me, adult Ae-shin is angry that Dong-mae has become an ally of the Japanese when Ae-shin’s parents sacrificed their lives to keep Joseon out from under Japanese influence, which is what Ae-shin is currently working toward herself. I think she’s repulsed that the boy she saved has become a traitor to his country, which makes her angry at herself. (I’m getting really psychological here, this is just speculation.)
On the other side of things — adult Dong-mae still feels a deep sense of gratitude toward Ae-shin and it’s obvious whatever feelings he has will soon turn into love. Ae-shin was the only person who showed him compassion in his life and treated him kindly. It’s those qualities about her that Dong-mae longs for and perhaps even wants to repay. He might be a ruthless and reckless leader, but he does show softer sides. I feel like his emotions can seesaw to extremes, as opposed to Eugene who keeps his feelings under his composed soldier facade.
Is Ae-shin afraid of Dong-mae? I don’t think so. I believe she just doesn’t like the person he has become.
And I, too, died multiple times during their scene together and was riveted during the flashback, the two child actors did a phenomenal job. Ae-shin and Dong-mae’s storyline is going to be so angst-y due to having that childhood connection.

I must agree that the child actors were superb! And I also agree that it is not so much deep attraction that he felt towards her, perhaps deep gratitude with some attraction. The latter will grow later on as he begins to support her fight… I don’t know why I have this feeling that though he was shocked, in which he hid his emotion really well, to hear her accused him of being a traitor, he was more disappointed that that is all that she could see. There must be another reason for him to come back to reside in Joseon besides revenge and AS. He may not have a clue of what she thought of the Japanese but generally the people of Joseon are against the Japanese, and that he was aware of, I like to believe so. There must also be a reason for him to look for the document. Maybe to sell it to the highest bidder, or maybe he has his own agenda. Seeing Hina closely staring at the crates of guns, affirms my suspicion. There is more than meet the eyes for Hina and DM. We do not know what transpired during their time in Japan. He could have been a double agent, just like Hina, thus the relationship between the two. They may have learnt more about the previous uprising against the Japanese and may have joined forces. For them the only way to survive in Japan is to sing the same song. Japan is different than the US, hence we see a much more laidback Eugene but a hardened, ruthless DM. After a point of hardship, Eugene’s life got positively better as he became a citizen of the US. But for DM, I don’t think he already is a Japanese by citizenship. I find DM’s character has more dynamic. Like you can play around it and paint various colours to it, it will still be interesting to get to know. ^_^

I agree, I don’t believe Dong-mae considers himself Japanese like Eugene considers himself American. Dong-mae is still a man of Joseon but his political allegiance is with Japan. For now. I love all the speculation we’re doing!! And you’re very welcome for the glorious screenshots! I took a million of them and picked the best ones, glad you like them! 😄

-But actually —Yoo Yeon-seok speaking Japanese is something I never knew I needed. His voice sounds slightly higher in Japanese, too? Basically, he’s perfect no matter what language he speaks.
-This show is sooo cinematic. The wide shots are gorgeous. The lighting on the close-ups is great, too. (Lighting in general is very good. I can’t point out too much about technical stuff, having only minimally studied film, but this camera work screams money. And is quite fitting for a sageuk.)
-I need more flashbacks of Dong-mae’s journey! And I’m a person who actually doesn’t really like flashbacks! (It looks like we’re going to get them in tomorrow’s episode, thanks to the preview.)
-Who are these young child actors because they are beautiful and cry so well. It’s a rhetorical question: I’ve seen them all in previous dramas and at the rate they’re going, they will be fine adult actors one day. They are racking up one helluva resume.
-I KEEP MIXING UP the two actors who look alike: Eugene’s embassy colleague/translator and the ex-slave hunter turned pawn shop dealer. I remember also initially having the same mixup in Goblin. I’m sorry, I know they don’t really look that similar, but I’m focused on other things in this show!
-I’m still not feeling Lee Byung-heon’s character.
-Buuutt I like that it’s established to Ae-shin that he is AMERICAN and has a completely American mindset and she shouldn’t yet think of him as an ally. (Girl, there’s still 21 more episodes for sh*t to go down. You can afford to be suspicious of him for a while longer.)
-I loved the conversation about what “love” means in the tailor shop. I am also thinking back to the girl studying English for love and wonder if she’s crushing on David McInnis’s character? (A Beanie threw that out there earlier as a possibility and I’d love to see that play out!)
-Ae-shin is pretty steely for a sheltered noblewoman, I appreciate the dual sides of her character and I really hope she keeps sticking her nose in places people wouldn’t think a girl like her would. I really hope she plays a part in this political game and doesn’t just sit around while the boys fight over her.
I also want to briefly reflect on the show runners’ decision to change Yoo Yeon-seok’s character because of the Korean viewers. Some people thought they were romanticizing Japanese-sympathetic people? I understand the incredible hatred between countries and the lingering tension, I’ve studied history, but I wish the producers hadn’t caved so easily. (This isn’t being live-shot/live-written, they finished filming a while ago.) Supposedly they’re now re-editing the show to make Dong-mae less sympathetic, which means my precious YYS is going to get reduced screen time and potentially a plot line that’s either thrown out the window or seriously altered. Nothing in this episode seemed off about his character, he’s simply on a revenge mission and has aligned himself with the Japanese for now. It’s called politics, people. It’s also only episode 3, barely anything has happened yet. It’s too early to jump to conclusions.
Otherwise… I am enjoying Mr. Sunshine.

If this show decided to make YYS the lead I would be PERFECTLY OKAY with that, he’s the reason I’m in this for the long haul! (Unless, ya know, it turns into a dumpster fire halfway through or something. And even then… I still might watch it because of him. BUT ALSO — if they kill him off anywhere before the last two episodes, I’m out.)
So, I was going to wax poetic about episode 3 because I.LOVED.IT. But you already did and much better than I could have. And Mr. Third Lead got my attention tonight. That was beautiful lighting in the scene with him and his Japanese lover. But YEO YOON-SEOK, be still my beating heart. I’m entranced by him. I agree, I need him to be the lead like I need water.
Mr. Third Lead got my attention being a naughty boy in Japan, I did enjoy that sweet melancholy scene of his, but no one can distract me from the glorious Yoo Yeon-seok! I feel exactly the same as you!
I have a horribly suspicious mind and immediately think “Is there some backstage drama where LBH is angry that people are loving YYS’s character more?? Does he have the power to make them change the story?”
Don’t mind me, I have a bad habit of thinking the worst.

Yes, there likely will be lots more footage on the cutting room floor now that they’re changing YYS’s character. It is such a shame because he is a great actor and this role fits him perfectly. The chemistry he’s had so far with all the actors he’s been in the same scene with has been amazing, so tense, so layered — I really can’t wait to see how he interacts with Kim Tae-ri, especially because he feels a sense of gratitude toward her. It’s totally possible that the romantic feelings his character might have for KTR and vice versa will be very much lessened due to the controversy. Which is also a shame because YYS can do a pining lover so well.
And the supporting cast IS awesome! I’ve seen many of these actors in dramas over the years and feel like they are the real backbone of Korean television. A show has to be so perfectly crafted to be able to survive on lead talent alone, and without a strong supporting cast, nothing would feel believable. Props to everyone in this show for sure!
I agree. I get antihero vibes from his character. We’re only 3 eps in, but I dearly hope the show runners don’t change too much regarding his storyline because of the Korean audience’s criticism of Japanese sympathy being romanticized…

YES. I was actually wondering why she even put on makeup and accessories to leave the house. I would totally wear pajamas if my boyfriend appeared after I had washed up, and was driving me from my house to his without stopping anywhere public in between.
Exactly! I have cute pajamas and my theoretical boyfriend should be honored to see me in them! I have a shirt that says Ramen Life with a bowl of ramen on it and some garish but still cute Hello Kitty long fuzzy pants! And once I take my makeup off, there is NO WAY I am putting it back on until the next day, haha.
it’s true that Another Oh Hae Young reruns a lot in Korea…I was there last May one full year after it aired in Korea and I caught Another Oh Hae Young on tv one day at my Jeju island hotel room lol

Another Oh Hae Young had the best onscreen kisses ever… However, I don’t understand why someone might feel awkward watching kiss scenes with their BF/GF?!!!
I guess it might be awkward when you’re in bed together and you’ve yet to “do it” with your significant other…? Like, you’re trying so hard to be a gentleman/lady despite THE THOUGHTS and then to ease the tension you turn on the tv just to see some other people being passionate? Idk, having never been in this situation, haha!
Same! Legit I started watching the show’s little opening title and I saw the Iloom ad with Gong Yoo and chuckled to myself. Then we got to that actual scene and I noticed the two remotes on her bed and I thought it was weird, why couldn’t she put them on her night stand? Then she picked one up–and I laughed so hard at PSJ’s confused expression as the bed just magically lifted.
I was thinking the same thing: why does she keep remotes in her bed??
I still can’t figure out how the 2nd remote stayed in place when the bed was going up.
I remember having a similar conversation to this years ago on a thread for The Mindy Project. Mindy Lahiri kept tons of stuff on one side of her bed and on one ocassion she had a boy over for some overnight activities but before he could get in bed with her she had to remove all the stuff on the other side of the bed which were: laptop, books, hammer, a knife (like a huge one) and some other stuff. On the thread some people were like—what? How? Why? Who does that? Thats dangerous! Only for some singles to point out that sometimes junk just migrates onto your bed….?
All of that to say—her remotes are there because even if you’re an organized individual sometimes things just migrate there? When I actually have a bed all sorts of things end up in bed with me. And since remotes always end up in bed with me when I make my bed—i just cut out the middle man and put them on or under my pillow.
That’s hilarious! I don’t keep anything except my phone and a stuffed Pusheen plushie on my bed! I’ll use my bed as an extra surface when I’m cleaning for like clothes and books and stuff, and I’ll often be on my computer in bed, but I also have a small twin sized mattress so I just can’t fit much on there with me, haha. I do hide stuff under the pillows though when I have no other option!
When I make my bed I have a stuffed pig (wink) that stays on a pillow and my remote and my cellphone charger. Those live on my bed. I know if they go anywhere else in the middle of the night I’m going to reach for one of them and more than likely topple over.
One particularly memorable week when I barely had time to sleep I found when I finally made my bed: a drill (i was putting together a bookcase), several library books, a plate (we wont talk about how many days it was there…shhhh) with knife and fork, a box of candy and a candle. The candle is why I remember it so clearly. I’m not a candle person. Where did that candle come from? A bottle of salad dressing and a truly mindboggling amount of socks. WHY SO MANY SOCKS, isa?
I have thankfully never gotten that bad again. But, seriously. The candle and the socks. Now that I’m looking back the knife is pretty odd too. This is yet another reason why I’m always saying someone else should be in charge of my life. There are times I sit and wonder about me.
@isthatacorner That’s an eclectic mix of objects! I have a memory foam mattress so I can balance drinks and stuff on my bed, not that I like to for fear of spilling them. And I know, I barely wear socks yet I have so many!!! And I too wonder about me… It seems like it’s a common thing to sit and ponder what has become of my life. 🙂
It’s scenes like this one that are brilliant at showing expectation v reality. In drama terms, it’s more romanticized v reality. Gosh, I love this drama.

I have a huge problem with WWWSK episode 14, YUGE. (What IS wrong with Secretary Kim?!)
The fact that she was planning to resign is what started this whole romance, and it is a weird power dynamic the two have been trying to resolve. But they both believed it was perfectly all right because Kim Mi-so would leave the company and do her own thing and find her true calling and there’d be no more “Vice President” and “Secretary Kim” formalities needed.
It also seemed in this episode that Young-joon really did seem to understand the importance of Mi-so finding her own interests and taking a leap of faith and he was ready to let her go without any resistance. But the fact that Mi-so has changed her mind and decided to stay as his secretary—and that Young-joon didn’t push harder to have her stick to her original decision has me so frustrated. What the heck have they trained Ji-ah for?! Change is a part of life. And it’s not like they’re never going to see each other again! They can still date! And see each other every day! And spend weekends together! Most couples don’t have the luxury of working at the same company together. But also most couples aren’t literally in a boss-secretary dynamic.
If she wants to stay, give her a separate job, maybe running her own department or something (which she is perfectly capable of doing!), that doesn’t have her catering to Young-joon for his every need. I just don’t like this power dynamic. And I don’t like that Mi-so has defaulted and given up trying to find new pursuits. With her rich boyfriend/soon-to-be hubby, she has the opportunity to do what she wants, money no issue. (Heck, I’d love to have that freedom to experiment! She’s making a dumb choice.)
I hope Dad’s serious objection to this relationship includes this factor. I hope he happily gives them his blessing on the condition Mi-so DOES quit her job at Yumyung Group. Please, Show, please please please don’t disappoint me. I loved the message of Mi-so giving up an amazing career that ate up her entire life because SHE WANTED TO LIVE FOR HERSELF AND NOT OTHER PEOPLE. Don’t disappoint me!

It seemed like the drama was heading in a direction that would have Mi So going back to college and finding herself there. I’m hoping that she doesn’t stay–that she does go to college (maybe she can work part time for the company if she wants?) and then comes back–or not–depending on what she’s learned about herself.
I wasnt particularly shocked that Young-Joon didn’t object harder to Mi-So wanting to stay. I’ve long thought that while he’s the boss—Mi So is clearly running the show.
My very first thought to Mi So changing her mind was: What about Kim Ji Ah? Are you going to have TWO secretaries? Is she getting fired because Mi So changed her mind? Maybe Pres Park will finally toss out his incompetent secretary and Ji Ah will go to him.

Yes, there was lots of talk about how Mi-so didn’t go to college and instead went straight into the workforce. I wouldn’t mind if that’s the direction she goes in. And I can see how Young-joon wouldn’t be too pushy with Mi-so right now, especially after he accepted that he needs to be more respectful of her wishes and lower his “speed” to more match hers. But still… the show better have a good resolution because if Mi-so does indeed remain a secretary, I will be very salty. Very. Salty.
And yes, what about Ji-ah?! How’s that going to work, with two secretaries?!

I will join you in the saltiness but I don’t think thats going to happen. To heck with her dad–her sister isn’t going to let that happen. And I honestly don’t think Young-Joon is going to let it happen either. We know that he loves her and wants to be with her every second of every minute but we also know that he’s really trying to put her first and think of her needs first. He’s going to see that she needs to be doing more than what she’s doing. He’ll probably need Pres. Park to push him in to saying it because—yeah. Shes calling the shots here.
And I think that there has to be a further tie in with Young-Joons family. The brother has decided against running away. But right now that storyline feels unfinished but its also just sort of hanging out on the side. Maybe something will happen there. Mi-So helping bring the brother into the company (but hes a writer so he doesnt need that…?) I dont know. But yeah, she cannot stay a secretary. Whats the point of the drama if she does?

There seem to be a few loose ends that the show needs to resolve in the final two episodes. Like you mentioned with Sung-yeon, his storyline does feel unfinished. (I also feel like Lee Tae-hwan was was miscast but also very under-utilized in this show. Maybe for the reason his acting isn’t up tp PSJ’s level and they didn’t want to risk showing too much of that? Idk, I feel like he’s been forgotten in this show just like his character was forgotten during much of his childhood, oof.) I have hope the show will make sure Mi-so does NOT remain a secretary, but the fact that we’re two episodes away from the end and Mi-so has remained a secretary so far up to this point when it would have been refreshing to actually see her experiencing a different life for maybe half the show, makes me a bit nervous. 🙁

I finally finished Forest of Secrets. What. A. Show. A+++. Riveting. Smart writing. Excellent pacing. Epic finale. Amazing acting. Bravo Jo Seung-woo, Yoo Jae-myung, Bae Doo-na, Shin Hye-sun, et al. My emotions were thrown all over the place watching this show, suspecting every single character, and then whenever a big reveal happened—oof, punch to the gut. I really liked these characters, I liked them a whole lot more than I realized, so when anything happened to them, I really felt it. Forest of Secrets is on my list of all-time favorite dramas. It takes a while to build up, but it lays the groundwork so fantastically well. Also—they better go ahead and make season 2, they set the next season up so well with that ending. But until that happens, I guess I’ll just have to watch Life (premiers next week!) and hope to dear goodness it is an amazing show, too (and I don’t even like medical dramas that much…). My hopes are high, though, we’ve got the return of the Forest of Secrets writer, Lee Soo-yeon, and lots of the cast: Jo Seung-woo, Yoo Jae-myung, Lee Kyu-hyung, Eom Hyo-seop, and more!

I just realized this is finale week for The Undateables. Sadly, I feel so unsatisfied with this show. It started off as one thing and it’s ending as something completely different. Ah well. At least Namgoong Min is pretty. But this show is a snooze. I’ll finish it ‘cause it’s easy popcorn watching, but I feel a little cheated. (Also, what is this pattern of Hwang Jung-eum’s recent dramas — this and Lucky Romance: they started off promising, then they just fizzled out, and I only hung on for the male lead who was pulling more than his weight.) Sigh. Namgoong Min, you tried. You win some, you lose some.

Well. Now we have the face of the original Manicure Murderer. I knew something was up with the cop who popped up in the beginning of the episode, the one who handed Na-young the papers. We saw him TWICE and I was like, Hmmm, no other cop has ever come in before to deliver stuff on this show, so this is definitely a big red flag. INDEED IT WAS.

Mr. Sunshine episode 4 thoughts:
-> Yoo Yeon-seok. This is going to be a regular pattern for my “thoughts” posts. Get used to it.
-> I can’t take these dramatic staring contests seriously. They’re just too indulgent and go on too long. Yes yes yes everyone is very pretty but I don’t think I’ve ever held a person’s gaze that long without saying anything.
-> This is the first drama (and a sageuk at that!) that I can remember that has the woman tell the guy who swung her away from an oncoming vehicle, “I have eyes and ears and can save myself, thanks.” Hooray for Ae-shin’s maid, I love this ajumma!
-> Dong-mae buying candy had me dead.
-> The flashback to young Ae-shin and Dong-mae! So sad, so intense, this could be an entirely different story if it was just about the two of them, a star-crossed lovers / Romeo & Juliet type story. Oh, what a thought!
-> I actually like Kim Min-jung’s character. Kudo Hina is a SMART lady, a flirt, and speaks just as many languages as our boi Eugene. She’d make the best spy ever. I can’t wait to watch her character trajectory as she gets more and more caught up in the political shenanigans, seeing as she runs the place all the important players like to visit.
-> The puns from David McInnis’s character! I appreciate the little jokes the show manages to squeeze in.
-> LIKE all the characters asking if the translator and pawn shop dealer are brothers!!
-> Okay, I officially don’t like Byun Yo-han’s character. He’s a playboy and a gambler and from the way Ae-shin looked at him with disgust at the very end of the episode makes me think she knows his insincere ways. Also, we all know he doesn’t stand a chance.
-> Adding onto that, I feel like out of the three male leads, HE’S the one who could easily go full villain on us!
-> I really like where Eugene is now, holding his former masters at gunpoint. This is what I’m talking about! His emotions are taking control and he, too, feels the need to exact revenge, quite like Dong-mae felt in the last episode. Finally we’re starting to see who Eugene Choi is. I don’t think he’ll actually kill them, that would be a huge political no-no, but I like that he’s a finger’s pull away from personal and political disaster.
-> Park Hyo-shin’s voice during the ending credits gets me. Not only did they spend money on the big stars, they spent money on the soundtrack and somehow coaxed PHS out of his typical hiding.

YYS is the scene stealer and his role is the most dynamic too but I found BYH good too. He does go well with the fl for obvious reasons. Moreover i think AS does harbour some feelings for him as we learnt in the previous episodes that she does regularly stitch a suit for him. The only thibg I am not feeling is the ml and fl scenes. Apparently they should be intense but I find them lacking and boring. I was glad BYH finally stepped in and according to the teaser I think he will just side with EC, not become evil.

I think BYH is really good, but he’s definitely the least interesting to me (now). Perhaps his character and Ae-shin have some history, and politically they are a good match, but idk, her scowl when she saw him definitely wasn’t the typical “moved to tears because I can’t believe he’s finally back.” And do I think he’ll actually become a real villain? Not really, YYS’s character is much better set up for that trajectory. You’re right, BYH will probably stay a “good” (relatively) guy, but there will be lots of tension because all the guys will be mad in love with Ae-shin and of course only one of them will be lucky enough to receive her heart. And it won’t be BYH!

And with so much focus on LBH and KTR’s characters, these second and third leads haven’t gotten much to do yet. YYS was absent from ep 1 and most of ep 2, and BYH absent from ep 3 (was he also absent from ep 2? I can’t remember).

Let’s see how it pans out! I am not a huge fan of the writer (I found both DOTS and Goblin, underwhelming) but I am liking it this far! BYH is the only one I can’t connect to! Maybe it’s a way he is portraying Eugene Choi or maybe his indifference to Joseon? I don’t know. BYH is a terrific actor though…

I wasn’t a big fan of DoTS (I watched it almost begrudgingly) but I did enjoy Goblin (though more for the acting than everything else). Perhaps it is Lee Byung-heon’s portrayal of Eugene that is making him hard to connect to… I didn’t start to like him until this fourth episode, and only because of the very last scene that gives him potential to really change and or show his suppressed colors. I haven’t seen LBH in anything, nor Byun Yo-han, so these two aren’t making me starry-eyed yet — they have a lot to live up to, my expectations are pretty high! I have seen YYS and Kim Tae-ri in other stuff, and I am happily pleased by what I’m seeing. 😀

I am curious to know what your thoughts on his last encounter with AS. It seems like something intense between these two was there when she saved him. There must be more to that scene in the carriage. That memory shook AS and we can see she unconciously reacted the same way. Is it because she remembers he said she was just a noble fool who lives a luxury life? And that she was angry with herself for judging him, acting holier than thou, seeing his reaction to her scolding is not what she was expecting, his calm, strong deep gaze telling her who are you to say that to me, yangban agasshi? Or is it simply just fear from those pair of killer gaze? I think I lived and died multiple times when he shot that stare.

The way I interpret it, little Ae-shin took pity on Dong-mae, understanding that he’d probably get killed if he was spotted, and decided to hide him and help him. Perhaps she expected him to be utterly grateful and not say a word out of fear, but instead he mouthed off, insulted her, and wiped his bloody/dirty face on her dress. Perhaps young Dong-mae’s words struck a cord in her that she hasn’t forgotten, and while she does live a luxurious life and has immense pride and expects people to respect her, she definitely is not a fool.
To me, adult Ae-shin is angry that Dong-mae has become an ally of the Japanese when Ae-shin’s parents sacrificed their lives to keep Joseon out from under Japanese influence, which is what Ae-shin is currently working toward herself. I think she’s repulsed that the boy she saved has become a traitor to his country, which makes her angry at herself. (I’m getting really psychological here, this is just speculation.)
On the other side of things — adult Dong-mae still feels a deep sense of gratitude toward Ae-shin and it’s obvious whatever feelings he has will soon turn into love. Ae-shin was the only person who showed him compassion in his life and treated him kindly. It’s those qualities about her that Dong-mae longs for and perhaps even wants to repay. He might be a ruthless and reckless leader, but he does show softer sides. I feel like his emotions can seesaw to extremes, as opposed to Eugene who keeps his feelings under his composed soldier facade.
Is Ae-shin afraid of Dong-mae? I don’t think so. I believe she just doesn’t like the person he has become.
And I, too, died multiple times during their scene together and was riveted during the flashback, the two child actors did a phenomenal job. Ae-shin and Dong-mae’s storyline is going to be so angst-y due to having that childhood connection.

I must agree that the child actors were superb! And I also agree that it is not so much deep attraction that he felt towards her, perhaps deep gratitude with some attraction. The latter will grow later on as he begins to support her fight… I don’t know why I have this feeling that though he was shocked, in which he hid his emotion really well, to hear her accused him of being a traitor, he was more disappointed that that is all that she could see. There must be another reason for him to come back to reside in Joseon besides revenge and AS. He may not have a clue of what she thought of the Japanese but generally the people of Joseon are against the Japanese, and that he was aware of, I like to believe so. There must also be a reason for him to look for the document. Maybe to sell it to the highest bidder, or maybe he has his own agenda. Seeing Hina closely staring at the crates of guns, affirms my suspicion. There is more than meet the eyes for Hina and DM. We do not know what transpired during their time in Japan. He could have been a double agent, just like Hina, thus the relationship between the two. They may have learnt more about the previous uprising against the Japanese and may have joined forces. For them the only way to survive in Japan is to sing the same song. Japan is different than the US, hence we see a much more laidback Eugene but a hardened, ruthless DM. After a point of hardship, Eugene’s life got positively better as he became a citizen of the US. But for DM, I don’t think he already is a Japanese by citizenship. I find DM’s character has more dynamic. Like you can play around it and paint various colours to it, it will still be interesting to get to know. ^_^

I agree, I don’t believe Dong-mae considers himself Japanese like Eugene considers himself American. Dong-mae is still a man of Joseon but his political allegiance is with Japan. For now. Mr. Sunshine episode 3 thoughts:
-Yoo. Yeon. Seok. The End.
-Just kidding.
-But actually —Yoo Yeon-seok speaking Japanese is something I never knew I needed. His voice sounds slightly higher in Japanese, too? Basically, he’s perfect no matter what language he speaks.
-This show is sooo cinematic. The wide shots are gorgeous. The lighting on the close-ups is great, too. (Lighting in general is very good. I can’t point out too much about technical stuff, having only minimally studied film, but this camera work screams money. And is quite fitting for a sageuk.)
-I need more flashbacks of Dong-mae’s journey! And I’m a person who actually doesn’t really like flashbacks! (It looks like we’re going to get them in tomorrow’s episode, thanks to the preview.)
-Who are these young child actors because they are beautiful and cry so well. It’s a rhetorical question: I’ve seen them all in previous dramas and at the rate they’re going, they will be fine adult actors one day. They are racking up one helluva resume.
-I KEEP MIXING UP the two actors who look alike: Eugene’s embassy colleague/translator and the ex-slave hunter turned pawn shop dealer. I remember also initially having the same mixup in Goblin. I’m sorry, I know they don’t really look that similar, but I’m focused on other things in this show!
-I’m still not feeling Lee Byung-heon’s character.
-Buuutt I like that it’s established to Ae-shin that he is AMERICAN and has a completely American mindset and she shouldn’t yet think of him as an ally. (Girl, there’s still 21 more episodes for sh*t to go down. You can afford to be suspicious of him for a while longer.)
-I loved the conversation about what “love” means in the tailor shop. I am also thinking back to the girl studying English for love and wonder if she’s crushing on David McInnis’s character? (A Beanie threw that out there earlier as a possibility and I’d love to see that play out!)
-Ae-shin is pretty steely for a sheltered noblewoman, I appreciate the dual sides of her character and I really hope she keeps sticking her nose in places people wouldn’t think a girl like her would. I really hope she plays a part in this political game and doesn’t just sit around while the boys fight over her.
I also want to briefly reflect on the show runners’ decision to change Yoo Yeon-seok’s character because of the Korean viewers. Some people thought they were romanticizing Japanese-sympathetic people? I understand the incredible hatred between countries and the lingering tension, I’ve studied history, but I wish the producers hadn’t caved so easily. (This isn’t being live-shot/live-written, they finished filming a while ago.) Supposedly they’re now re-editing the show to make Dong-mae less sympathetic, which means my precious YYS is going to get reduced screen time and potentially a plot line that’s either thrown out the window or seriously altered. Nothing in this episode seemed off about his character, he’s simply on a revenge mission and has aligned himself with the Japanese for now. It’s called politics, people. It’s also only episode 3, barely anything has happened yet. It’s too early to jump to conclusions.
Otherwise… I am enjoying Mr. Sunshine.

Yes, there likely will be lots more footage on the cutting room floor now that they’re changing YYS’s character. It is such a shame because he is a great actor and this role fits him perfectly. The chemistry he’s had so far with all the actors he’s been in the same scene with has been amazing, so tense, so layered — I really can’t wait to see how he interacts with Kim Tae-ri, especially because he feels a sense of gratitude toward her. It’s totally possible that the romantic feelings his character might have for KTR and vice versa will be very much lessened due to the controversy. Which is also a shame because YYS can do a pining lover so well.
And the supporting cast IS awesome! I’ve seen many of these actors in dramas over the years and feel like they are the real backbone of Korean television. A show has to be so perfectly crafted to be able to survive on lead talent alone, and without a strong supporting cast, nothing would feel believable. Props to everyone in this show for sure!

I agree. I get antihero vibes from his character. We’re only 3 eps in, but I dearly hope the show runners don’t change too much regarding his storyline because of the Korean audience’s criticism of Japanese sympathy being romanticized…

YES. I was actually wondering why she even put on makeup and accessories to leave the house. I would totally wear pajamas if my boyfriend appeared after I had washed up, and was driving me from my house to his without stopping anywhere public in between.

Exactly! I have cute pajamas and my theoretical boyfriend should be honored to see me in them! I have a shirt that says Ramen Life with a bowl of ramen on it and some garish but still cute Hello Kitty long fuzzy pants! And once I take my makeup off, there is NO WAY I am putting it back on until the next day, haha.

it’s true that Another Oh Hae Young reruns a lot in Korea…I was there last May one full year after it aired in Korea and I caught Another Oh Hae Young on tv one day at my Jeju island hotel room lol

Like, you’re trying so hard to be a gentleman/lady despite THE THOUGHTS and then to ease the tension you turn on the tv just to see some other people being passionate? Same! Legit I started watching the show’s little opening title and I saw the Iloom ad with Gong Yoo and chuckled to myself. Then we got to that actual scene and I noticed the two remotes on her bed and I thought it was weird, why couldn’t she put them on her night stand? Then she picked one up–and I laughed so hard at PSJ’s confused expression as the bed just magically lifted.

I remember having a similar conversation to this years ago on a thread for The Mindy Project. Mindy Lahiri kept tons of stuff on one side of her bed and on one ocassion she had a boy over for some overnight activities but before he could get in bed with her she had to remove all the stuff on the other side of the bed which were: laptop, books, hammer, a knife (like a huge one) and some other stuff. On the thread some people were like—what? How? Why? Who does that? Thats dangerous! Only for some singles to point out that sometimes junk just migrates onto your bed….?
All of that to say—her remotes are there because even if you’re an organized individual sometimes things just migrate there? When I actually have a bed all sorts of things end up in bed with me. And since remotes always end up in bed with me when I make my bed—i just cut out the middle man and put them on or under my pillow.

That’s hilarious! I don’t keep anything except my phone and a stuffed Pusheen plushie on my bed! I’ll use my bed as an extra surface when I’m cleaning for like clothes and books and stuff, and I’ll often be on my computer in bed, but I also have a small twin sized mattress so I just can’t fit much on there with me, haha. I do hide stuff under the pillows though when I have no other option!

When I make my bed I have a stuffed pig (wink) that stays on a pillow and my remote and my cellphone charger. Those live on my bed. I know if they go anywhere else in the middle of the night I’m going to reach for one of them and more than likely topple over.
One particularly memorable week when I barely had time to sleep I found when I finally made my bed: a drill (i was putting together a bookcase), several library books, a plate (we wont talk about how many days it was there…shhhh) with knife and fork, a box of candy and a candle. The candle is why I remember it so clearly. I’m not a candle person. Where did that candle come from? A bottle of salad dressing and a truly mindboggling amount of socks. WHY SO MANY SOCKS, isa?
I have thankfully never gotten that bad again. But, seriously. The candle and the socks. Now that I’m looking back the knife is pretty odd too. This is yet another reason why I’m always saying someone else should be in charge of my life. There are times I sit and wonder about me.

@isthatacorner That’s an eclectic mix of objects! I have a memory foam mattress so I can balance drinks and stuff on my bed, not that I like to for fear of spilling them. And I know, I barely wear socks yet I have so many!!! And I too wonder about me… It seems like it’s a common thing to sit and ponder what has become of my life. 🙂
