Side Story That memorable 2016
I saw Beast in Manila for their Fan Meeting in March.I was very excited since they’re coming to my City.But,rumors started circulating about Hyunseung plus he missed the Manila FM.In April,it was announced that he’s left the group.
When Beast’s comeback was announced I was very very worried.How will they sound now? HS has a great voice. And who comes back with 2 ballad songs for promotions?
But as always,Beast hasn’t disappointed me.
Ribbon
a midtempo ballad,just like their song 12:30 in 2014.More than the lyrics, that violin instrumentals almost throughout the song,hooked me.Sometimes though,it overwhelms the vocals.But I just loved strings orchestrations in songs.
Yoseob fills in for the parts that Hyunseung might have had,at least for me.Junhyung totally nails the emotional rapping on this tune,turning it to singing seamlessly,lending some edginess to the tune.
Lyrics were inspired by JH’s hotel robe’s ties,loosening.I kid you not,he said, “It’s a ribbon.I went outside while wearing a hotel robe,and the ribbon easily came undone.I thought I had tied it tightly,but that wasn’t the case.I used that to explain the relationship between two lovers.”
It’s reminded me so much of 12:30 which I loved and sometimes lessens my enjoyment about it.
I loved it with its changing environments and scenes,never having quite the same look even if they hit the same location again.The boys dance, too, which just adds some goodness to the whole thing. (Those hip swivels,OMG! ; like this: https://youtu.be/i4BoypuT0jQ)
It boils down to loneliness, as memories are fished out of a storage locker. The clocks? Because time is the one thing that was not on their side. It manages to be much more than the sum of its parts.
Admittedly,it kind of creeps me out, sometimes.Maybe their darkest MV.
But,it did tied me up with Beast, even more.That I was ready but anxiously waiting for news after their contract ended in Oct 2016 until now.

Thanks for sharing the side story of 2016, i haven’t found much info in eng on HS’s departure and subsequently the group’s departure from cube. I guess that explains the melancholic tone of the album. The group looked pretty down in that year’s comeback. Its was probably an emotional year for the fandom as well.
The mv is creepy indeed, now that I watch it closely this time. That hand coming from the locker 😱. And poor doojoon, of everyone it had to be him assigned to jump off a building.
And I laughed at the hip swivel collection video! Those are awesome moves though, thanks to this HLnuna video which replayed it 3x, i’d always look out for it in every ribbon performance.
Once again thanks for these trivia! Its great to listen to this song again with all that context. <3
