@greenfields and other beanies watching NIF, how is it going for you? I just completed episode 6 and am not really wow’ed by anything. It feels like a chore watching it as of yet.

I think for people who has watched chinese dramas before, Nirvana on Fire, something they’ve never seen before. It had high production values, subtle performances, and a complete story. But what it didn’t have was excitement. It was great at politics, but there was no sense of danger. If you ever reached episode 21, then you’ll get the excitement you are looking for. Thus, I had a hard time with that drama as well. It took me awhile to finish. But I did finish.

I love NIF but I am actually one of those who took a while to get into it. It was beautiful to look at but I didn’t feel get that giddy excitement early on (except for eps. 5-6). I dropped it, then picked it up again, and indeed, after ep. 19 it was non-stop magnificent excitement.
But don’t force yourself @wapzy if you’re not feeling it. 🙂

NIF is my first Chinese drama. ^^ I’ve watched ep 9. I’m enjoying the politics but with quite a lot of disbelief. Mei Changsu must truly be divine to accurately predict the course of events like that. But I’m obsessed without being obsessed. When I’m watching it, I want another ep, when I’m not, I don’t think about it. That sense of urgency is definitely lacking.

From what I’ve seen, watching the first 20 eps of NIF seems to require patient for some folks (It wasn’t for me since I had already a fan of the novel before the drama aired). But I strongly recommend you to stick it out until ep 21 – 22, because the time and effort you invest in the first 20 eps WILL PAID OFF.
This drama is complicated, even by Chinese drama standard. It has the extensive amount of characters, complex web of relationships (literally everyone in the drama is somehow related to one another), unfamiliar cultures, some suspensions of disbelief (I’ve seen people complain about characters “flying”) and on top of that is non-stop, head-spinning politics; of course it takes quite a while to get used to. But if you think about it, 20 episodes actually an appropriate amount of time to build up the first climax; by that time you’ve care enough about the characters, familiar with the settings and understand the stakes. Your body will be ready for all the climaxes to hit you! And it will be glorious 🙂
If you still not feeling it after ep 22, then this drama is indeed not for you.
