Beanie level: Eunuch in drag

I missed the start to Music March but better late than never. Thought it’d be a great way to kick this off with Andrea Bocelli and Marta Sanchez’s Vivo Por Ella. A beautiful ode to music itself. This song is a favorite of mine. I remember hearing it for the first time years ago and thinking it a love song only to discover it’s not! Well it is but not to a person. It’s a song to music and I think it’s amazing how the song makes you believe it’s dedicated to a person until the penultimate verse where it tells you who the subject is. That’s so ingenious in my opinion. So I’m sharing it here because, yes, music is incredibly powerful and I dedicate it to Music as well.

I love this song, and it is beautiful sung by Andrea and Marta.
It was so famous after OT1, that some have almost forgotten they were the original ones singing it.

This Gook family is crazy. I can’t STAND them. They make my blood boil. I say good riddance to Seung Hyun, he was never a friend. And you know, ever considered Yeo Jin never found a man again, not because of her leg, but uh…because she’s crazy…unstable…obsessive? And I’m rolling my eyes prematurely at the noble idiocy I see on the horizon.

This drama made it so I could never watch Seo Kang Joon in anything else. I’m sure he’s nice and did some good stuff, but I can’t shake this character from him as an actor. I’ve never seen the one-legged lady in anything else — I’d probably turn that off too.

      1
      2

@blnmom I’m actually not a fan of SKJ either and this just sabotaged any chance of me warming up to him. Amazing how a character can have so much impact on an actor.

LOL at the one-legged lady. This poor actress was probably traumatized by her own character. I don’t blame her.

        0

This and CITT made it hard for me to watch SKJ – so I did not watch anything else he was in. Maybe I should give him a chance with I’ll Find You…….

I hate it when second leads can\’t take no for an answer. You can\’t force someone to like you back! They don\’t \”owe\” you love for being a good friend or a great business partner. And then be petty and try to take down a company, with no consideration of all the innocent employees who may be affected by it. Ridiculous! Spoiled brats.

And while I\’m on a rant. Also, how irritating is it when someone is trying to formally reject an unrequited proposal (for the umpteenth time) and the guy interrupts…oh I\’m tired…I gotta go. So only you have a say in this, huh? 🙄

This is a big reason why Go Back Couple worked perfectly for me. Similar premise but none of the characters overstepped boundaries. The second leads knew when to back off and be cool about it.

But funny how exactly the same scenario looks cute and romantic when it is between the original leads.

    1
    2

There’s been so many cases where I didn’t think it was romantic at all even between the main leads. It’s often the point where I drop a drama: when it’s borderline stalking & harassment and I’m supposed to find it cute

      2
      1

Hmm I actually didn’t meanthe borderline stalking kind, but I know what you mean.

True! For example, I watched both seasons of Welcome to Waikiki recently and this was the deciding factor on which I liked better. In season one, the male lead’s insistence and nosy self irked me to no end. This is not funny!! Whereas in season two, the guy took her rejection at face value and respected it. Was he upset? Yes, but he stepped back and never mentioned his feelings again.

This was funnier than it should have been.

Yeo Jin\’s crash flashbacks are SO dramatic it doesn\’t seem to fit in with the rest of the drama. It\’s like those minutes were written and directed by someone else. Quite jarring tbh. And I laugh. Which is horrible of me because it\’s supposed to be sad. 🤷🏻‍♀️ #Cunning Single Lady

Okay but this drama was just 6 years ago and it\’s amazing how much the kdrama industry has progressed. We evolved from eeextremely dramatic violin instrumentals to more subdued piano ones or none at all during confrontations.

I burst out laughing when it happens but in 2014 it was the thing apparently. I\’m still enjoying it through. Good ole\’ kdramas. #Cunning Single Lady

I finished Radiant Office and I have a few misgivings about it. Mainly Ki Taek being terminally I’ll. I can’t believe show went there in episode 15. Also, the major cop out imaginary brother had me confused. Oh and Hyun could have been an incredibly interesting character if written better.

Nonetheless, I shoved that under the rug and I must say I love this little gem of a drama. Everything else made up for it. Loved loved loved the gang of Ho Won, Ki Taek, and Kang Ho. Words can’t express how much I rooted for Ho Won. Such a lovely young woman who doesn’t let anyone walk over her or trample on her morals.

The slow burn OTP romance was adorable as well. If I ever fall in love I want it to be like this lol. Ordinary. I don’t need piggyback rides, dramatic U-turns, nor guys running to me in the rain. They became friends, encouraged each other, had night strolls in the park, and were just incredibly adorkable. Everything felt so natural. 😍Thanks for the recommendation beanies!!

My belated two cents on CTG, well, resident Newbie to be exact….Yoo Ryung was a controversial character because she was the personification of the dilemma, \’does the end justify the means.\’ I think she was more impulsive than reckless. It\’s not that she didn\’t realize what the consequences of her actions would be, it\’s that she believed the end justified the means. She literally threw everyone and everything under the bus in order to help others, including herself. Was it the smartest course of action? Probably not and I sometimes wished she would be more levelheaded or trust more in others. Like Jiseok getting suspended hurt me. 😭 I cried with him. But then we wouldn\’t have the character the writer envisioned. And at least the writer gave us reasons as to why she acted the way she did, be it through flashbacks or monologues. Some of us thought it still wasn\’t justified, some of us did. Personally, that was one of the things that really got me with YR but I forgave her eventually. I was just irked with her briefly because JISEOK! *more tears*

She was flawed but she had her motives in the right place. She didn\’t do it for recognition. She just wanted to help others. And at least from my standpoint I feel like the writer gave us clearance to either like Yoo Ryung or not. I for one liked her tremendously and I wouldn\’t change her. Also, it seems like most of the plot holes just so happened to be either relegated or connected to her character, which I think made her stick out more as the character in the wrong. Oh and one last thing, our drama happened in the span of 3 months. Certainly not enough time for a 180 degree personality shift. Not that I forsee her morphing into Jiseok or Mari, nor would I want that. But maybe in the future CTG world she at least picked up a few more tips from Jiseok on how to act more wisely while keeping her strong sense of justice.

Maybe I have a high tolerance to characters like this lol. While watching CTG I couldn\’t stop thinking about Jinsung from Beautiful Mind. I remember when the drama aired she got so much criticism that, unfortunately, some of the viewers frustration seemed to carry over to Park So Dam, the actress (honestly, I think she was scared away from kdramas because of BM 😅). But there I was. That loner in the crowd smiling at her like an idiot thinking, \”that\’s my girl.\” Jinsung was actually quite reckless and she messed up big time. She jumped to conclusions way too fast and acted on that impulse without weighing the facts. But I forgave her too because she picked herself up, admitted she was wrong, and took her superiors\’ advice/reprimands to heart.

At the end of the day, I seem to have a soft spot for these FL characters(thank you CTG for my second kdrama epiphany of the year). I like seeing them mess up and be..well human? Kdrama geniuses and prodigies don\’t appeal to me as much. On rare occasions they do but flawed characters tug at my kdrama feels so much more. ❤

I really loved the female lead in My Strange Hero for similar reasons even though the character is very different from Yoo-ryung (who I also love, and who I think was developed incredibly well and played spectacularly by Moon Geun-young). In MSH people were really mad at the female character for making a mistake that hurt the male lead from when they were seventeen and acted like because of her sin and her misunderstanding she was forever marked as a blight on the male lead. And the thing was, she was such a badass. She was a teacher who loved her job – but who also had integrity. She genuinely believed what she had seen all those years ago and it was only her integrity that caused her to report it. And it was that same integrity that caused her to learn of her mistakes and ask for forgiveness and to grow. Not many characters do that. Yoo-ryung was the same. She was reckless in her ideals, but she was never intentionally reckless nor was her intention ever to do anything other than help people.

I think we’re so used to the idea of helping people being tied to good actions that we forget that misguided actions often come from the best of intentions. And after years of having female leads who work hard and are “good” we forget that female characters can be “good” when they make mistakes too. The best part of a good drama is seeing a character grow to keep that idealism but to learn how to wield it properly. Yoo-ryung was a great character to show that.

Interesting. I may need to watch that drama then. That sounds straight up my alley. And this…!

“And after years of having female leads who work hard and are “good” we forget that female characters can be “good” when they make mistakes too.”

I couldn’t have said it better!!

It was one of my personal favorite dramas of this year, definitely recommend. I think I did a write up on the female lead somewhere back on my wall while it was airing too. I just remember really liking her, because she was just so well developed and her story arc was great to watch.

Yes exactly, that’s exactly how I felt from the start. Exactly what I couldn’t put into words the way you did. That’s was straight to the point. Such characters are complex too. Thank you😊. I haven’t watched My strange hero, but now it’s in my list of dramas to check out.

I\’ve come to realize, belatedly, that one of the biggest factors for me stanning an actor is their voice. I\’m surprised I realized just now, 10 years into my kdrama addiction. Nonetheless, it hit me yesterday out of the blue and I spent my afternoon relishing in my faves\’ beautiful voices.

I think there\’s one actor that immediately comes to mind for everyone when we talk about voices. Who else then The Voice! Lee Sun Kyun!! I saw him yearsss ago in Coffee Prince and I always remembered him vaguely as the only thing I liked about the drama. That little cover song he sung was on my playlist for the longest time. Eventually I forgot about him (tbh) and then My Mister aired. I started it on a whim but the second he spoke I was a puddle lol. Then I connected the dots to my teenage crush in Coffee Prince. Gosh, this man has a beautiful voice. He takes the #1 place in my list. ❤

Second place goes to the actor who made me have my epiphany. Kim Seon Ho. Oh my gosh guys. I can listen to him all day as well. Lee Sun Kyun has this velvety, rich voice but Kim Seon Ho has a this hoarse, deep voice. It\’s so difficult to describe but I love it.

Then there\’s Jang Hyuk. I think for him it may be more his articulation that makes his voice/conversation appealing. I feel like Jang Hyuk just has a really emotive voice so he transmits a lot just by speaking.

I\’m thrilled to finish Catch the Ghost and dive right in to War of Prosecutors. What a wonderful finish to my year. Let me know if there\’s another actor with an ah-mazing voice. 😏

Yea 🥰🥰🥰 I totally get what you mean!! Even though, for me, personally, it’s the eyes 😍😍😍😍

Lee Sun Kyun, Kim Jae Wook, Choi Jin Hyuk, Park Hyung Sik, Lee Soo Hyuk, Lee Seo Jin, Woo Do Hwan are all my faves in terms of actors with voices I love ❤️

Judging from my current trend, I fall for acting and characters first. But maybe voice plays a role too, since both JKH and SSR can sing. My no 1 favourite is SSR, obviously. I want a full solo album and also an audiobook. Hahaha

Oooh Jung Kyung Ho! I forgot about him. Lol how about a collab album with all our faves?

Funny because I came to the same realisation recently too. Voice is truly important as part of what makes the actor unique.

Lee Sun Kyun has hands down the most unique voice. You will never forget his voice or confuse his voice with someone else’s. For me it’s also Gong Yoo who makes me want to listen to his voice all day. His voice is soothing and reassuring.

From the younger actors I like Nam Joo Hyuk’s voice, especially the way his voice sounded when he spoke to Bok Joo in WFKBJ. He has great potential if he trains his voice.

And forgive me Binnie’s fans, but Hyun Bin on the other hands… doesn’t quite have nice or pleasant voice. I like his acting and he’s very good looking but I’ve never grown fond of his voice *goes in hiding*

2019 has been my year of dropping dramas. Some of them I actually liked but I just dropped them hoping to finish them one day. So for me to binge watch Catch the Ghost in one week convinces me that it was my crack drama of the year. Flawed and all I loved the characters and I liked the set up with the murder mystery. Is it my favorite drama of the year? I don\’t know yet. I honestly can\’t remember the 2019 dramas I managed to finish this year. I always have to check when dramas aired too because sometimes I feel I saw them the year before but they\’re current. 🤔 TLDR: Catch the Ghost was the perfect end to my kdrama year.

I just finished rewatching Just Between Lovers and I fell in love with it all over again. It\’s SO good! After much deliberation I think Kang Doo is one of my favorite ML and if I had to pick an ideal type it would be Kang Doo. He\’s not a genius, he\’s not a chaebol, he\’s not distinguished, etc. He\’s so ordinary but such an extraordinary human being at the same time. Can I have a friend like Kang Doo at least? 😭

Yes! Just Between Lovers has the most beautiful, healthiest relationship I’ve seen in a Kdrama thus far. (I haven’t watched that many tbh and I might have forgotten a few good ones, but JBL is just so understated and sweet, it takes the first spot on my list.)
