Beanie level: Errand boy

Hey bean friends. It’s literally been years since I’ve been here, but I’m making a major life decision and wanted info. How many of you are from UK? I’m planning to go there for a masters!

Where do you plan to go? I’m in Edinburgh

I’ve got my admission letter for the uni of north hampton. problem is, I’m 3 months pregnant right now. will i be able to manage?

      1
      1

I went and checked and your last comments were 2020 and I went “oh that’s not that long ago” and then I remembered that 2020 is TWO YEARS AGO NOW SO YOU’RE RIGHT IT HAS BEEN YEARS. But- no- I’m in denial. It can’t be. The last two years don’t count anyway.
Hi zgs! Hope you are well~

    2
    1

Missed you! @cloggie is there, but she has not been around for months here.

    1
    1

I am! What do you need to know?

    0
    1

Oh, hey! I’ve got my offer letter for May in the uni of North Hampton. It’s a project management degree. But I’m pregnant and I’ve heard the health system is scary there – it’s hard to get GP appointments and they don’t do ultrasounds (not sure about this last one?). Moreover, it’s hard to find a rentable residence at an affordable price, I’ve heard.

Plus, the husband will need to find a job. He’s a civil engineer and I’m an architect. I’ll have a 20-hour work permit each week, I think. But I don’t know if and what I’ll be able to do with that. I’m 3 months pregnant at the moment.

What do you think? Any suggestions?

      0
      1

Ooooh, okay, I can offer you my perspective!

The NHS is infuriating, I can’t lie about that to you. It’s so strained that it’s difficult to get GP appointments, ambulances can take hours if you aren’t a priority, and you’re treated like you’re wasting their time if you come in for a small thing. A little comfort, though – you’ll be in the city, and it’s usually better in cities! I’m from a tiny little village, but now I live in Canterbury, a small city, and it’s far easier to make doctor’s appointments for a start (just an online form, instead of calling a thousand times first thing in the morning). I’m sure you’ll be able to find a GP that’s reliable. As far as I know, there’s no reason why you won’t be able to get ultrasounds either!
One-bedroom flats are quite expensive, yes. It tends to get more reasonable the further north you go – I think you’ll be able to find something nice for about 600-700PCM, if you think that’s doable? You won’t be in the south or in London, where housing is the most expensive, so I think it’ll be okay on two salaries.
I wish I could reassure you when it comes to jobs, but I’m actually a university student, so that’s beyond my scope I’m afraid!

It’s so incredible that you and your husband are making this move! That’s braver than anything I’m capable of! If I can ever flag you towards useful websites or anything like that, just let me know! I’ll ask around if needs be.

        0
        2

Just as an estimate, how long would it take for me to get a GP appointment when I land?

I’m more worried about what might happen when the baby will come along. I’ll still have to study and keep up with an income as well. Who would take care of a new born? Are there any daycares that do that? How much do they cost?

This is honestly the scariest thing that I’m about to do. I have no idea how it might work out, but I am so freaking done with the patro-matriarchal culture that we’ve got going on where I live. It’s an absolute nightmare to live in a joint system with your inlaws. I’m hoping life there would at least be a little bit rewarding.

Also, I wanted to ask if pregnancy charges are covered in IHS immigration health surcharge? And what kind of a job can a pregnant lady get there asap?

My Unfamiliar Family is so deliciously understatedly makjang. I like all the characters, but not liking Eun Hee’s choice to greenlight the one-night stand guy…

Do you think that having the full wig makes them look more different or having the shaved head & half wig with the braid looks more different?? 😅😅😅

    2

EVERY kind of wig makes them look different. Then they do the commercial thing before the episode starts and I have to do a double-take, then squint really hard because, wow, suddenly this kid looks like a totally different person 😀

I’m VERY tempted to start watching it because I want to be able to enjoy it with everyone else, but at the same time, I also want more episodes to come out before I begin watching because I watch things at a pretty fast pace and know that I will catch up in no time once I start and will have to end up waiting for new episodes every week 😅😅 THE STRUGGLE

            0
            0

Aw, but it’s almost over. Only 2 more episodes to go and it’ll be complete! It’s consistently funny, but I wish it were more polished. The main boy and girl have some sizzling chemistry, tho! And the way that he looks at her, omggg! 😀 It’s the definition of heart eyes!

          1
          1

Ooooh,I did not know that it only has 2 episodes left!! I might actually start it now lol As soon as I can make myself get over the Cdrama “Girlfriend” 🥰🥰🥰

            0
            0

Oooh, is girlfriend any good? And is it complete? What’re your thoughts?

          1
          1

It’s super cute, fluffy, and basically angst free until the ~ 2 episodes, and certainly doesn’t feel like it has 36 episodes but watches more like a 16 episode drama 😊😊

It’s complete, and can be viewed on YouTube with subs or the mgtv website with subs, and I would recommend watching it on the mgtv website if your region has access to it, just because I’ve realized that in recent months, a lot of Cdramas they have been uploaded onto YouTube— even the legal ones— will have some episodes here and there where the audio is cut, and that sort of interrupts the flow and the watching experience

            0
            0

I will try it out, then! 😀

Like time travel got so freaking convoluted in ep 15. I have questions:
1. How is future Rim alive when he was murdered by himself in the past?
2. What’s the deal with one half of the flute remaining with Shin Jae while Gon is back in Corea?
3. What’s Tae Eul planning to do with her half of the flute?

3
12

    1. At this point we really could have used chyrons telling us the dates. Maybe Gon went back to April 2020, so before future Rim was murdered. No idea.
    2. Apparently he’s holding it for 48 hours so that Uncle doesn’t back go to the past again (Don’t know why Gon didn’t aim for Uncle last time he went to 1994, just sayin’).
    3. No idea. It would be interesting if she takes Uncle to the in-between place and leaves him there, stuck forever.

    5
    2

      3. Tae Eul points out that Fate kept things the same although details changed, and that everything happened even sooner… Just thinking out loud: Gon came back to April 2020, so before Rim was killed

      2
      1

I also was super confused because the timing for that talk with Luna seemed a bit wobbly, but it can have the same explanation: everything happened before Gon’s trip to the past
(tomorrow will probably skim ep 15 to get some Gifs and will check the date, I think they say it when Gon arrives at the police station)

        2
        2

I feel so confused because when Rim was with Na Ri, he seemed to have memories of killing his future self. But he traveled back, right? I dunno, it’s so confusing 😀

          2
          1

He remembers killing his future self, so he still hasn’t travelled to the past (again) – and if he did, by now he should know better than try to talk rationally to his past self 😋 . I actually found it quite clever that he got to fulfill his fate of being beheaded and come out alive

            1
            0

Ohh. Everything is so messed up 😀

          0
          0

But, like, how did Rim have memories of the murder happening when he was with Na Ri and if it’s before that time, would he still choose to travel back in the near future?

      2
      1

What’s Tae Eul planning to do? Dunno. But my guess is that things will go wrong, and then she’ll have to hang out until it’s time to go to the rowing competition and guide Gon to the portal… I got so many things wrong in this drama, that I’m getting reckless, I’m just throwing ideas into the air, in case I get at least one right😂

    2
    0

Im not watching this but what a fun comment to casually scroll across: how is he alive when he murdered himself in the past?

    5
    2

But how was Gon traveling through the years when the flute was still halved?

1
14

My theory is that he was hanging out in Screensaver-land -he calculated 4 months there were equivalent to Corea/Korea 24 years-, just counting the time (that’s why he says he looses count of time when he sees Tae Eul) and coming out at strategical moments to influence events

    5
    1

Who knows with this writer? 😩

    3
    1

Oh yeah he was in the place between zero and one. He wasn’t time travelling, he was speeding up time there.

    3
    1

Going forward makes sense. How did he go back in time again?

      0
      1

He went back in time when he and Rim were in the screen-saver land at the same time. Since both halves of the flute were within the same realm again, he managed to travel back in time. Though, don’t ask how he and Rim never came across one another when they were time-traveling to the same place through the same mode.

        3
        2

No they don’t meet. We know that they have portals located on different sites, and once inside, they sensed each other, but were like in different dimensions of the same place (one with floating photos and the other with the red balloons – still need to figure out that deco 🤔😂 -, and probably that’s why we see them face to face and then as reflections of each other)

          2
          1

I feel like better direction could have conveyed this part of the story so much better! Like, KES! Why’d you change directors, waeee~~

Suiciding on the sacred tree (and destroying it) that protected Korea and that lead to a war which killed hundred thousand human beings, hence the hundred thousand number. Idk if you’ve reached that part in ep 2 though.

    2
    0

I’m wondering the same thing. Whatever it is made her cry. She didn’t care about the lives lost from the war but something got to her. I’m sure it had something to do with her mom.

My question is did the Queen send someone to kill her or was it the villagers?

    2
    2

My theory is that if she doesn’t complete the task then either her mom or the prince she fell in love with will have to take on that burden.

      0
      0

Yes, I was wondering what made her cry

Is it just me who thinks that Luna’s character is super underdeveloped? If it weren’t for KGE’s amazing acting, I wouldn’t believe she was sinister at all. Scruffy, yes. Super dangerous, not?

5
1

Lee Min Ho’s King…is actually growing on me? Has he gotten better? Or have I adjusted to the strange direction and editing of this drama? Or is the story finally giving him more to do than be a cheesy idiot?

7
6

story was well written from the beginning.. direction and editing is at flaw here

    4
    0

His character showed some movement this episode. Plus in today’s and yesterday’s episode he had some complex scenes to do. He acted well when he called out the traitor also in the funeral scene. So I guess that must be a factor too. Plus the directing and editing was actually better in both ep 9 and 10 overall sparse the beginning which was still disjointed.

    1
    1

I read that we’re on our third director now. Maybe it’s the director we needed all along?

    0
    1

    I’m enjoy his acting here.
I also think he’s pretty comfortable with Kim Go-eun.

Someone was talking about @stonejack ‘s theory about The King and how interesting it is. Can someone link me to that thread?

It was on The King recap but that page has too many comments and doesn’t stay still for me to copy a link. Easiest way is through @stonejack ‘s own profile and comments tab.

Ik Jun out there doing God’s work and bringing WinterGarden together. If he ships it, it must become cannon, right?

I think the one thing everyone agrees on with The King, it’s that it needs stronger directing…

What are some good kdramas to recommend to a very reluctant first-time watcher? Preferably available on Netflix?

1
10

What types of shows do they typically like?

    0
    1

they watched parasite and train to busan and like them

      1
      2

Maybe Forest of Secrets or Misaeng. I haven’t watched and or finished them, but they are highly rec’d by many Beanies.
I had started Forest of Secrets, but it is one you have to pay attention to and my attention span was not there, but do want to finish it before the sequel.

        1
        1

        How about designated survivor?hmm

        0
        0

Kingdom and Save Me if you want to continue that theme? Because this is My First Life, Hyena, Hello My Twenties? The Liar and His Lover is there too in the US.

    0
    1

Something light and funny: My Holo Love.
Something to do with politics: Designated Survivor.
My favorite drama EVER: Secret of forest – Stranger.
Something where nothing happens and you can’t stop watching: Life.
Something everyone has an opinion and it’s light and funny (or maybe not so much): Crash landing on you.
But if you want to go for one, I will say Stranger.
I recommended it to many friends that had never watched a kdrama before and that didn’t like the idea of subs, and all of them loved them

Maybe this can help. I asked beanies a similar question a while ago too. My friend had also seen Parasite so I was confused what to recommend her. Turns out she lost interest and never bothered to check any of the suggestions. I hope you do successfully lure your friend to kdramas.

The sweetest moment in all of Hospital Playlist so far is when Jeong Wan subtly passes those snacks to Gyeo-wool and she hoards them like treasure <3 I ship.

Soo…does Hae Won end up staying with Eun Seob at the end? I can’t really tell…

3
2

I think it’s implied she stayed in the town. That’s how I interpreted the ending, anyway. Who knows whether she ended up living with Eun-seob or her mom though.

    2
    0

She told that she will do things with her friends in town with teaching, because she’d realized that finally she doesn’t dislike it. She’s definitely coming back. Even ES called her up on it and as he was sleeping again after, his insomnia happy pill was staying for long time… I would love a second season though.

How Hyun Jeong treated Min Jung in ep#15 was beyond cruel. I know her loyalties lie with Yuri but there were better ways to handle that situation… #hibyemama

4
14

I felt so bad for her, almost like they are bullying her. When they all kept saying sorry and Minjeong’s like well what do you want me to do? Ahh my heart.

    4
    1

I know, right? She’s just all alone in this with no one on her side. I feel like Yuri’s mom was the only rational person in this episode. The least Hyun Jeong could have done was be her friend, even though she was on Yuri’s side. It was awful! So, so awful – especially Gang Hwa. Gang Hwa was the WORST!

      4
      2

        Yessss. When Mom was talking to her, I was like please don’t say sorry. Please don’t say it!! And she didn’t! Instead she said thank you. ;A;

Fck Gang-hwa, I’m so done. When Minjeong said she’ll leave and all he could say was I’m sorry? Ugh. Dude does not deserve anybody at this point. He needs to get himself together.

        3
        3

Yes! Min Jung definitely deserves better people in her life. All of these idiots can go to hell.

          4
          0

Exactly. That’s like the worst form of confirmation that Kang-hwa never even wanted to entertain the possibility of not divorcing Min-jung. Grrhh… It’s extra annoying because I watch this drama for Lee Kyu-hyung. And I’m probably spoiled rotten by all those great and unforgettable characters he has played before.

          2
          2

Same. My main pull here was Lee Kyu-hyung and I’m so disappointed that this is the character he ended up with.

            1
            0

            It’s just awful, what’s happening to her… 🙁

            2
            0

I am so mad at Gang Hwa for bowing his head and saying I’m sorry like WTH dude WHY DID YOU EVEN MARRY HER!! WHY!??? UGHH

          1
          1

It was so annoying. If Inwas Minjung, I’d walk out and never show my face ever. I think she’s ony contemplating because of Seo-woo.

            1
            0

I was so grateful for Yuri’s mom.

I’m done with Gang Hwa. There might as well be a reset because I want Min Jung to be with someone who actually loves her.

I really don’t understand what this show is doing.

        5
        2

In the beginning, it seemed like they were already set with Ganghwa-Minjung but comments over on naver wanted Ganghwa-Yuri. Maybe writer tried to tweak it but realized it’s not going to work. Now we’re stuck with this mess in our hands.

          4
          1

Most probably, yes. They should have just stuck with their initial plan…

            0
            0

Yes. I feel like Go Back Couple hit all the emotional strings perfectly, but Hi, Bye Mama ended up missing each and every single one of them…

          1
          1

Yep. GBC stuck to its original purpose. HBM lost its way. I never hated anyone in GBC and I’m sad to say I don’t like Gang-hwa. And I freaking love Lee Kyu-hyung!! Ughhh.

I prefer Go Bo Gyeol in HBM though because she did more.
