Beanie level: Errand boy

Overall, Extra You ending was ok. I’m all for the College! AU – but I really wanted to know what was up with the strawberry shirt Nam Ju. Plus where’d Ju Da and Do Hwa go??

Camellia was SUCH a good show. They wrapped up everything so nicely! <3 GHJ and KHN presented their characters so beautifully <333

At this point, I’m not even worried but the king because that cliff has a 100% dramaland survival rate. He’ll probably show up at some crucial time and maybe even get a redemption arc #TaleOfNokdu

Ugh. I hope show didn’t give him amnesia and all is forgotten. I’d say no redemption arc for the crazy king.

    2
    1

Yes, redemption at this point might be bad so let’s see what they’ve got in store for us today

      4
      0

Well I will be very curious to see how they could give him a redemption arc. But I will admit I hate him and feel so sorry for him at the same time.
He is complicated and really doesn’t know what to think himself. I feel bad for him for being such a pig because he was sweet for a time.
But at the same time I kept telling her to PULL THE TRIGGER – NOW!!!

    3
    1

Me too. But at some point, i knew he wouldn’t because of she’ a better and morally stronger person than the king ever could be.

Ok, so Extra You beanies who’ve read the manhwa, could you please tell me everyone else’s story? how does the manhwa differ from the drama?

A lot…i think at this point they’re basically two stories but the drama uses lines from the drama, just in completely different contexts….

Has any C-drama enthusiast watched Oh My General? Is it worth the watch?

1
6

I watched it and really liked it. They really go all out on the gender reversals which I loved. It does drag a bit in the middle but it was still quite entertaining. Both actors do a great job (It is Sandra Ma afterall). I typically suggest this to people if they are looking for a light period cdrama.

    0
    1

How so with the gender reversal?

      0
      1

For example, she is the bread-winner of the family while he is the one who is off dancing and drinking away. He is known as a ‘flower beauty’ so known as being very beautiful while she is the rough ‘manly’ one (even though she is clearly beautiful). One of the love rivals is a woman who is in love with the FL. The FL is the one who has to protect the ML. Even the FL father calls the ML ‘daughter-in-law’ and asks when he will get pregnant. There are many instances and they keep the gender reversals all through the drama which tend to be pretty hilarious.

Like I said, it does drag in the middle. It gets political and deals with a war between different countries but it picked back up for me nearer the end. All in all I personally enjoyed it.

I am daunted by the 60 frickin episodes, but the premise is making me want to try it out πŸ˜€

I haven’t watched it myself but someone said that it was fun to start but things went south midway.

The gender reversal and the first half were fun but it went more serious. The shift wasn’t handled that well so it altered my viewing experience. Still, I love Sandra (not because she’s a favourite of mine hehe) and how she portrayed the general.

We have been here for 1000s of years.. and yet go through same set of emotions in similar situations..

Yeah, but do you think its unconscious deja vu situation?

      0
      1

There was a scientific paper published (will have to hunt for details) about collective human cognizance

In nutshell, it said, when a human is born, he is born with this inherent knowledge that guides the basic human principles of life which literally haven’t changed in eons

        Something like DNA

        0
        1

Interesting. In my religion (Islam) we believe that Allah (God) summoned all of humanity at once before creating the world and that He showed us what’s going to happen, and that’s what deja vu is (our soul remembering something from those moments that were shown to us.)

hmm.. i don’t believe in existence of 1 god/supreme entity… faith is a different thing..

and the reason being, gods’ seem to have shelf life.
No religion exists since start of this universe.. as societies change new religion and new gods come up..

            but that’s an interesting mythology
wonder what other religions say.. but i think broadly it comes to action-reaction theory of hinduism (and a version of it in other religions wherein basically.. if you don’t behave xyz will happen)

Also, did I miss something in translation because shouldn’t the king have been happy that his son would be the next king? (as in after him) I don’t understand this at all… #TaleofNokdu

6
11

Same. Maybe it would skip him, because although he’s the son of a concubine, his son is the child of a queen?

Or having a son would neutralise his claim and give it to his half-brother?

    1
    2

I have no idea, but I wish there was more to this idiotic reasoning.

      1
      0

Nokdu’s grandfather was the king, the current king Gwanghae was only the crown prince. So the shaman told him his grandfather would pass the crown to Nokdu and skip him.

      4
      1

He still would have been regent for a while, wouldn’t he? How could he decide to kill his own son? >.<

Well, people who’re obsessed with the power aren’t this practical 😕

Yes, but he kinda seemed reasonable enough in that other flashback…well, I’ll just chalk it up to bad writing…

          IKR, it’s plain crazy.

          1
          0

This is how I interpreted the scene with the shaman/fortune teller – the current king was the crown prince when he found out from her that his yet-to-be born son would be the next king, ie he would be passed over for throne in favor of his son so he decided to kill his son to secure the throne. Totally sick but sort of make sense for a power-hungry ambitious crazy man.

    6
    1

Ah, okay. Makes sense (but only a little). His personality runs the gamut of friendly-abuji type to power-hungry psychopath, but I wish he’d have given his son a chance to live…

Often, XZ would do something to trigger YB, even hit him but usually gentle. YB was a lot more rough and ‘savage’ in response. They can only be super close in order to have this kind of dynamics.

Y’know, the absolute contrast between Wang Yibo (the 22 year old kid) & Hanguan jun (the immortal impossibly regal cultivator) slaps me in the face sometimes. How are they one and the same? #TheUntame

14
19

yes YES YEEES!!!!! That’s what confounded me and got me into the rabbit hole. The more I dug into the world of WYB, the more surprises I got.

    3
    1

He’s honestly such a cute lil kid. I’d love to adopt him! <3
What surprises did you get? πŸ˜€

      3
      1

        Where do I start?
        1) Initially, I thought he could be a one hit wonder. Delved into his previous dramas. Not many – actually only two and several short film stints but sufficient to prove he’s a natural.
        2) Compared to Xiao Zhan who is super articulate, WYB has few words. Sometimes, he even stumbles at expressing himself. But if you watch what he does and how he performs, you’ll see that there is a lot more to this young man. Just like someone said it’s obvious that XZ had a great understanding of his role because he can make entire speeches and essays on it. Not so with WYB. He said zilch compared to XZ. However, watching how he interpreted and brought so much complexity and layers to Lan Zhan showed that he knew and understood completely.
        3) His hobbies, likes and behaviour may seem childlike or immature to some but they belie a good understanding of the world of showbiz and he deals with it on pretty much his own terms.

        3
        7

He seems like a really sweet kid who doesn’t take bullshit from anyone.
I wanted to ask: did he dub his own lines in the drama or was that a different voice actor?

          2
          2

@zgs1994 neither WYB or Xiao Zhan dubbed their own lines. The same voice actors from the anime also dubbed the drama.

They did ask WYB if he wanted to dub his own lines but he declined not feeling confident enough. Funnily enough, XZ was never offered 🤣

            3
            0

The voice actors for XZ and WYB are among the best in C ent. I’m so thankful they chose them because they did very well.

Like what @trinpie said, only WYB was offered to dub his own lines. For me, I love his voice so much. There’s a funny clip of Day Day Up, a variety show where Yibo is in. He was asked to translate for the guest, a S.Korean boy. When he spoke in Korean, one of his team(host) remarked: “Just speak Korean, why do you have to sound so sexy?!” Everyone laughed but it’s true.

            3
            0

@outofthisworld I can never get tired of what you say about WYB. A recent clip I saw of him, a question was asked if he found any similarities in learning acting and learning how to ride a bike. His answer: There is. They are both acts of learning. The interviewer couldn’t stop laughing. His answer was very literal. It is so WYB.

          2
          2

I find him adorbs. He’s such a literal cutie. πŸ˜€

            2
            0

This was what got me to watch many of his interviews.

I’m never one to listen or read too much into actor’s interviews. For Korean ent, I find the interviews pretty superficial. Everything is packaged and scripted. I only started to watch or read them when I was watching Go Go Squid. I find C interviews more refreshing. The interviewees get asked all kinds of questions – good or bad and anything in between. Those actors I saw were also able to articulate well, were funny and interesting.

Xiao Zhan is really impressive in his interviews. He answers questions in such earnest, sincere and thoughtful way. On the other hand, WYB shocked me. His answers are mostly short, curt for those deservedly so and he would even asked if he can not answer the question or flat refuses. In short, he is an example of what you’d tell your rookie actor not to do for interviews. Yet, he made a persona out of it successfully. People accept this as his style, even the interviewers. I suspect some throw in questions which will illicit the trademark WYB response. He even has trademark catchphrases or memes like β€œζ˜―δ½ δ»¬δΈζ‡‚ζ— θ―β€ “δΈζ„§ζ˜―ζˆ‘” (“You don’t get it, there’s nothing more I can say” “It can only be me”)

Obviously not everyone finds him a darling which explains why he has his fair share or more than his fair share of antis. But I find that he has cleverly crafted this image which is close to his real personality – straightforward and frank, short answers(he really isn’t the most expressive), deals with the nonsense that the media throws at him and makes himself unique.

            2
            0

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Well, they did a fantastic job! If the actors wore the expressions, then they emoted wonderfully through their voice! <3

Been meaning to ask this too: how did Lan Wangi find out it was WWX in the mask 16 years later? I think I forgot. πŸ˜€

          1
          1

He knew because Wei Wuxian played β€œWangXian” on the bamboo flute. Lan Wangji had only ever sang that melody to him in the cave and no one else. ☺️ In the drama, I don’t think they outright say that that’s the name of the song except in the BTS.

            3
            0

Yeah, I watched this one interview where he was with XZ and the interviewer asked about his slender waist and WYB staight-up told him ‘what kind of a question is that?’ and the interviewer was like, ‘but your fans ask that a lot’ and WYB was like ‘i understand them because they’re girls’ and at that point i was genuinely cracking up.

and then there was XZ in the aftermath gently reprimanding him not to be so rude on live tele. πŸ˜€

I like him because he’s so candid. <3

          2
          1

In that Q & A session, WYB said more than he usually would in his retort. Normally, he’s just curt. XZ probably told him to play along or as you said be more careful on live tv but I think YB told him it’s alright.

Recently, XZ’s studio issued a statement about saesangs and I think it must have gotten so out of hand for him. 2 days later, WYB wore a hoodie with the words “Don’t bother me anymore” I speculate that it has more to do with XZ’s situation than his own. He’s used to the antics and I don’t think he ever addressed it directly(except for one time when they got hold of his phone number).

I’m still in the process of reading but from what I’ve heard they never went different ways in the book. They became cultivation partners in the novel (which is basically getting married in the cultivation world).

    4
    2

yep that sums it up. But there are a few short chapters at the end that refer to this and that part of the story…

      1
      0

Oh, ok. Makes sense. Why’d they have to split up at the series end… -.-

      1
      1

I guess it’s censorship-related thing. They probably wouldn’t want to push their luck too much by showing the 2 of them traveling the world together. But the way it ended in the drama, with Wangji’s voice calling out to Wuxian, it’s safe to assume that they reunited by the end and will never separated from each other ever again (just like in the novel).
