BABYYY VIBESSS!

This is so classic WYB interview.

What made me RFLMAO was that he was totally engrossed with the toy! At one point, he couldn’t even answer the questions properly. The caption that caught that wasn’t translated.

It cracked me up real good! πŸ˜€ They way they were like, “Stop it, I’m exhausted – YOU started IT! NO, YOU started it~”

What is this – this veritable hole – that I’ve fallen in since watching The Untamed. How long will it take me to climb out of it!

I finished the drama back in August and still not managed to claw my way out 🤣 hanging out on the fanwall hasn’t helped as we all keep feed each others addiction lol (not that I mind 1 bit!)

Same, @trinpie! I’m starting to read Heaven Official’s Blessing, another MXTX rabbit hole but I still have to listen to the MDZS audio drama so won’t get out of it anytime soon. 😁

Y’know, the absolute contrast between Wang Yibo (the 22 year old kid) & Hanguan jun (the immortal impossibly regal cultivator) slaps me in the face sometimes. How are they one and the same? #TheUntame

19

yes YES YEEES!!!!! That’s what confounded me and got me into the rabbit hole. The more I dug into the world of WYB, the more surprises I got.

    3
    1

He’s honestly such a cute lil kid. I’d love to adopt him! <3
What surprises did you get? πŸ˜€

      3
      1

        Where do I start?
        1) Initially, I thought he could be a one hit wonder. Delved into his previous dramas. Not many – actually only two and several short film stints but sufficient to prove he’s a natural.
        2) Compared to Xiao Zhan who is super articulate, WYB has few words. Sometimes, he even stumbles at expressing himself. But if you watch what he does and how he performs, you’ll see that there is a lot more to this young man. Just like someone said it’s obvious that XZ had a great understanding of his role because he can make entire speeches and essays on it. Not so with WYB. He said zilch compared to XZ. However, watching how he interpreted and brought so much complexity and layers to Lan Zhan showed that he knew and understood completely.
        3) His hobbies, likes and behaviour may seem childlike or immature to some but they belie a good understanding of the world of showbiz and he deals with it on pretty much his own terms.

        3
        7

He seems like a really sweet kid who doesn’t take bullshit from anyone.
I wanted to ask: did he dub his own lines in the drama or was that a different voice actor?

          2
          2

@zgs1994 neither WYB or Xiao Zhan dubbed their own lines. The same voice actors from the anime also dubbed the drama.

They did ask WYB if he wanted to dub his own lines but he declined not feeling confident enough. Funnily enough, XZ was never offered 🤣

            3
            0

The voice actors for XZ and WYB are among the best in C ent. I’m so thankful they chose them because they did very well.

Like what @trinpie said, only WYB was offered to dub his own lines. For me, I love his voice so much. There’s a funny clip of Day Day Up, a variety show where Yibo is in. He was asked to translate for the guest, a S.Korean boy. When he spoke in Korean, one of his team(host) remarked: “Just speak Korean, why do you have to sound so sexy?!” Everyone laughed but it’s true.

            3
            0

@outofthisworld I can never get tired of what you say about WYB. A recent clip I saw of him, a question was asked if he found any similarities in learning acting and learning how to ride a bike. His answer: There is. They are both acts of learning. The interviewer couldn’t stop laughing. His answer was very literal. It is so WYB.

          2
          2

I find him adorbs. He’s such a literal cutie. πŸ˜€

            2
            0

This was what got me to watch many of his interviews.

I’m never one to listen or read too much into actor’s interviews. For Korean ent, I find the interviews pretty superficial. Everything is packaged and scripted. I only started to watch or read them when I was watching Go Go Squid. I find C interviews more refreshing. The interviewees get asked all kinds of questions – good or bad and anything in between. Those actors I saw were also able to articulate well, were funny and interesting.

Xiao Zhan is really impressive in his interviews. He answers questions in such earnest, sincere and thoughtful way. On the other hand, WYB shocked me. His answers are mostly short, curt for those deservedly so and he would even asked if he can not answer the question or flat refuses. In short, he is an example of what you’d tell your rookie actor not to do for interviews. Yet, he made a persona out of it successfully. People accept this as his style, even the interviewers. I suspect some throw in questions which will illicit the trademark WYB response. He even has trademark catchphrases or memes like β€œζ˜―δ½ δ»¬δΈζ‡‚ζ— θ―β€ “δΈζ„§ζ˜―ζˆ‘” (“You don’t get it, there’s nothing more I can say” “It can only be me”)

Obviously not everyone finds him a darling which explains why he has his fair share or more than his fair share of antis. But I find that he has cleverly crafted this image which is close to his real personality – straightforward and frank, short answers(he really isn’t the most expressive), deals with the nonsense that the media throws at him and makes himself unique.

            2
            0

OHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Well, they did a fantastic job! If the actors wore the expressions, then they emoted wonderfully through their voice! <3

Been meaning to ask this too: how did Lan Wangi find out it was WWX in the mask 16 years later? I think I forgot. πŸ˜€

          1
          1

He knew because Wei Wuxian played β€œWangXian” on the bamboo flute. Lan Wangji had only ever sang that melody to him in the cave and no one else. ☺️ In the drama, I don’t think they outright say that that’s the name of the song except in the BTS.

            3
            0

Yeah, I watched this one interview where he was with XZ and the interviewer asked about his slender waist and WYB staight-up told him ‘what kind of a question is that?’ and the interviewer was like, ‘but your fans ask that a lot’ and WYB was like ‘i understand them because they’re girls’ and at that point i was genuinely cracking up.

and then there was XZ in the aftermath gently reprimanding him not to be so rude on live tele. πŸ˜€

I like him because he’s so candid. <3

          2
          1

In that Q & A session, WYB said more than he usually would in his retort. Normally, he’s just curt. XZ probably told him to play along or as you said be more careful on live tv but I think YB told him it’s alright.

Recently, XZ’s studio issued a statement about saesangs and I think it must have gotten so out of hand for him. 2 days later, WYB wore a hoodie with the words “Don’t bother me anymore” I speculate that it has more to do with XZ’s situation than his own. He’s used to the antics and I don’t think he ever addressed it directly(except for one time when they got hold of his phone number).

Now, can someone spoil me what happens after the show ends? Like, do they meet up again in the book? What happens after? #TheUntamed

I’m still in the process of reading but from what I’ve heard they never went different ways in the book. They became cultivation partners in the novel (which is basically getting married in the cultivation world).

    4
    2

yep that sums it up. But there are a few short chapters at the end that refer to this and that part of the story…

      1
      0

Oh, ok. Makes sense. Why’d they have to split up at the series end… -.-

      1
      1

I guess it’s censorship-related thing. They probably wouldn’t want to push their luck too much by showing the 2 of them traveling the world together. But the way it ended in the drama, with Wangji’s voice calling out to Wuxian, it’s safe to assume that they reunited by the end and will never separated from each other ever again (just like in the novel).

        2
        1

They are a couple. Married to their understanding.

Also, major props to the casting director – these two had so much chemistry together! Amazing!

For me, Xiao Zhan was a scene-stealer in The Untamed. He captured every single emotion so well – from hero to antihero, he did his character justice. He’s an amazing actor. So much gravitas! Kudos!

11
2

I was iffy about him when I first started watching. But by the end I couldn’t imagine anyone else as WWX. He fully became WWX for me and did such an amazing job in the role. He easily transitioned from playful puppy to dark anti-hero and back again. It was his portrayal of WWX that initially made me fall in love with TU.

    4
    1

He was amazing. Even behind the playfulness, you can see the charisma and power that his character holds. He delivered a truly wonderful performance.

This poor guy. This trauma might keep him from trusting anyone ever again.

Soooo. It was Grunt all along. In an alternate universe? Taking down the Bad Guy while playing dumb? Han Shangyan would be so proud. πŸ˜€

He is one of my favourite characters, I loved when it was revealed he was the mastermind, very fitting.

HAHAHAHAHAHA, LZ plucking up the lotus seeds for WWX and Wen Ning in the background wondering, “What the actual heck is goin’ on here…”

This was fantastic!

Also: I find it UTTERLY HEARTBREAKING how XiCheng\’s lil bit of kindness endeared him to a sociopath like Xue Yang. That entire arc was so convoluted yet revealing. </3

In the books, WWX didn\’t return in the same body. Is it otherwise in the adaptation? I understand why they\’d use the same actor (coz XZ is LOVE). So are they working with a mask post ep 33?

1
9

In the drama, WWX wears a mask until he’s found out… then the mask is off.

    2
    1

But he’s in the same body and everyone recognizes him by face?

      1
      1

Yup he looks the same as before. I’m listening to the audio drama version of the story and noticed that in this version he’s in the body of MoXuanYu which I really do not like and prefer how In the live action, he gets his own body back.

        0
        0

Ya he mostly just wears it when he is around people who would know him as WWX. But then once everyone knows who he is it gets completely abandoned.

    1
    1

no but is it the same face in the drama? as in, people recognize him on sight?

Yes, it is his same face. So if anyone knew him in the past they will know him now. Like when Jiang Cheng discovers it’s him. He of course had his suspicions but once WWX took off his mask he knew for sure it was him.

I think they did that because of the censors. Chinese censors forbid possessing a body which is essentially what he does in the novel. So they really skirt over exactly what happened and how he came back in the drama. I don’t think it had so much to do with wanting to keep the same actor, as they could do it where Xiao Zhan still plays him but when he looks in the mirror or something it shows the other person.

        1

His Lightness even wears devastation so beautifully. <3

Soo, did WWX shake of LZ's hand because JC was working the cliff edge free with his sword and he was afraid LZ would go down with him?

4
12

It’s kinda unclear but that’s what I think. He turned the sword like he was going to make another move with it (and he had wedged it into the rock). He’s a cultivator so he wouldn’t have missed stabbing WWX if that was his intent. And WWX got a look of shock before throwing himself back. So I think JC was going to break the rock, tumbling both of them down, which is why WWX threw himself away so he could save LZ.

    2
    2

That’s my take too, which makes it so much sadder. 🥺🥺🥺 i half expected LZ to jump after WWX when I rewatched that scene.

Apparently, WYB asked how he was going to act out this scene and the director said that he should imagine it was his motorcycle dropping off the cliff. It worked! 😅😂
Sorry, if burst the drama bubble, because now whenever I watch this scene, that’s all I remember and I can’t help but laugh.

    3

Apparently losing his motorbike is more devastating than losing Wuxian. Poor Wei Ying. 😂😂

This is kind of sad tbh but I had heard from Untamed Beanies about the one moment when, at a race, his bike had some mechanical problems so he couldn’t continue racing. And was forced to sit on the sideline, crying with his helmet on so his fans wouldn’t see it. 😭

          3

Your Lightness, who gave you the right to be so exquisite?

10
3

Yeah! Who gave him the right????!!!!

I can’t with WYB, just look at that face. His Lan Wanji is a masterpiece. I tried to get this character out of my head after I completed the drama so I went to watch me some WYB’s videos which I thought might be the antidote.

    I’m still in the hole.

    3
    1

I know, right? He absolutely personified this character! The quietness, the stillness, the emotional distance, the struggle to manifest all his feels, the way he wants to stick to the right path – he captured EVERY SINGLE THING so WELL! <3
