      Have you watched Dong Yi?

I’ll always remember this scene especially when he says, “How can I live without you?”

      You really feel his anguish.

      1
      1

Yes! I have! Dong Yi is pretty good and it’s one of the few sageuks that I watched all the way through.

        He was anguished indeed.

        1
        1

Now I’m curious. Which sageuks did you finish? And which ones did you drop?

          1
          2

I’m trying to remember as I’m writing this and I’m sure I’m bound to forget some, but let’s see ….

            Finished:
            – Queen Seon-deok
            – Tree With Deep Roots
            – Six Flying Dragons
            – Arang and the Magistrate
            – Dong Yi
            – The Moon That Embraces The Sun
            – Seven Day Queen
            – Jewel In The Palace
            – Dr. Jin
            – Faith
            – Kim Su-ro
            – Hwajung (finished it after dropping it for a couple of episodes)

            Dropped:
            – Saimdang, Memoir of Colors
            – Jang Ok-jun
            – Gu Family Book
            – Shine or Go Crazy
            – The Great Seer
            – Moon Lovers
            – Hwarang
            – Sword and Flower

            1
            0

I just finished Dong Yi! Also, how weird is it that the King is never addressed by his name by anyone even when Dong Yi knew him as the Justice Officer?

And I can’t believe that Geum/King Yeongjo who had Dong Yi and King Sukjong as such wise and loving parents would grow up to be such a stern father towards Crown Prince Sado.

Love your taste in sageuks! I have so much to catch up on.

            My list:

            Finished:
            Queen Seondeok
            Dong Yi
            Moonlight Drawn By Clouds
The Moon That Embraces the Sun
Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo (what a mess but Lee Jun Ki was amazing here)
Hwarang (another mess but I loved Park Hyung Sik’s acting especially in his scenes with Kim Ji Soo, the actress who played his mother.)
            Arang and the Magistrate
            Faith
            Sungkyunkwan Scandal
            Painter of the Wind
            Hwang Jini

            Dropped:
Cruel Palace – War of Flowers

            On-hold:
Jumong (Started watching it a few weeks ago before Dong Yi. Not not sure why but I’m finding it a bit draggy…Perhaps I’ve been spoiled by the cliffhangers and breakneck pace of Queen Seondeok.)

            0

Don’t you find Ji Jin Hee kinda hot?

      1
      1

I have to admit that, yes, he is ….. and more so with each new drama and with each passing year it seems.

        The man is aging well.

        1
        1

Sounds like you’ve watched a huge part of his filmography! Would you believe this is actually my first Ji Jin Hee drama? I didn’t finish He Who Can’t Marry. What would you recommend? Besides Jewel in the Palace, I’m definitely gonna watch that after this. I can’t believe the director is in his 70s. I just want him to live forever so he can create more Dong Yis and Jewel in the Palaces.

          1
          1

Well Dong Yi is not a bad way to start for a first Ji Jin-hee drama! So, yay! 🙂

I haven’t really watched him in that many dramas actually. I think I’ve only seen him in Jewel in the Palace, Dong Yi, parts of Take Care of Us Captain, A Warm Word and Misty. I tried watching The Great Seer, but even he couldn’t save it. I dropped it after one or two episodes.

Have fun watching Jewel in the Palace! A classic!

How can Bae Soo Bin be so shady in 49 Days and this hot in Dong Yi? This man can make ovaries explode.

So .. I don’t get how Yeon Woo can afford to live in this place. Is it his drug dealer friend’s place? Is he paying rent? How much? It’s such a nice pad and it looks it’s by a canal. Darn it!

9
12

MTE. This place is too good for someone who just recently got a job. Even if he share it with his drug dealer friend who officially works as a waiter.

    1
    2

The only way I can make sense of it is that his dealer friend is renting the place with the money he makes illegally and Yeon Woo stays there for free/pays minimal rent.

Ohmygosh, I just realised Suits has a double meaning. It can stand for suits as in clothes.. just as it can stand for lawsuits. What a dumbo I am.

      2
      1

I also thought suits as in clothes 😄, because the posters, both in us series and kdrama, showed two guys in suits.

        1
        1

yea and also because Jang Dong Gun and Park Hyung Sik kept talking about the suits. Lol, I was just talking to a fan of the US series and she was like, “Yea, what else could it be other than a double reference?”

          1
          0

We missed something. Remember those early scenes when he took those big fat checks for reciting random facts to the junkie chaebol? We also know that he took the bar exam for other people. They probably paid him a lot too. I bet he did a lot of these side gigs to earn money.

      0
      1

I’m not sure there’s enough money to rent a nice pad from side gigs. Those English teachers/YouTubers in korea can only afford small apartment.
Well it’s kdrama after all, where a bankrupt public attorney could have Furla handbag and rent a place with a living room.

        0
        1

I do think Yeon Woo’s living situation needs to be clarified.. We don’t know whether his dealer friend bought that place and Yeon Woo’s freeloading/whether they’re sharing it with Se Hee…
I feel like the drama writers are expecting us to read between the lines. It’s a mystery that’s almost as interesting as the cases Kang Seok and Yeon Woo are working on.

Who’s that bankrupt public attorney with the Furla handbag you mentioned? What drama is that? Lol, maybe she found it at a thrift shop or got it at a warehouse sale. I looked up Furla bags online and they’re not as expensive as I thought.

          1
          2

I think the writer and PD was just trying to make the property look like the US version. The pad does look like the one in the US series. IIRC, Mike shared it with his drug dealer friend, his girlfriend lived somewhere.
I don’t remember the character name, it’s Lee bo young’s in I Can Hear Your Voice.

            1
            0

ahh maybe they had to include this in the drama when they bought the rights to remake Suits. Maybe it’s in the contract.

            0
            0

Six episodes in and I’m still kind of unclear as to his living situation, unless I missed something. Does he live with drug-dealer friend or does he have a place of his own to go to ….. or does he pay rent along with his friend ….. or does the friend own the place and he just hangs out there?

    1
    1

And Se Hee, the girlfriend/ex-girlfriend of the dealer friend whose name I cannot remember lol.. She seems to be living there too. Who’s staying there? And what? How?

I think Yeon Woo’s definitely living in this spacious pad but he prob pulls all-nighters at the office too. The question is: How can he afford to stay there?

It’s possible that the friend owns the place since he prob makes a lot of moolah from dealing.
Well, thinking back to those scenes when Yeon Woo would do side gigs like taking the bar exam for others and showing off his sexy brain, I think Yeon Woo can afford to pay a bit of the rent. That’s prob also how he got the money to pay for his grandma’s hospital bills. Yeon Woo has a sexy brain!

      1
      1

It does make sense that they would be able to afford such a place with funds acquired from illicit activities.

Then again, it’s a drama and you know how it is …. even the one-step-away-from-being-destitute characters have the latest electronics and fancy wardrobes ….. we’re simply not supposed to be asking these questions! *laughing*

you’re welcome, though I just found out about it today as well through Han Cinema. They’re pretty quick at releasing news on dramas and movies.

          1
          6

No wonder I haven’t heard of it. I thought it was a new drama and that I was living under a rock 😂

            0

no, no.. You’re not living under a rock. Where do you get your drama and movie news from? With the dearth of casting news on DB lately, I’ve even taken to scouring Korean news sites for updates.

            1
            0

Without DB’s news I’m basically clueless unless beanies hype me up- on the fan wall or if I come across teaser trailers on youtube/ news on Bah+Doo (a drama live recap website).

            0
            0

I read Bah+Doo too! But Han Cinema and Soompi are my go-to sites for casting news since there are updates on dramaland and Korean films every day. Koala’s Playground is okay too, I guess, though the comments section is often filled with vitriol.

I guess you could also check the entertainment sections of Chosun Ilbo and Korea Herald.

            1

If you could switch careers with 5 Korean actors and actresses, who would they be and why? For me, it would be Kim Nam Gil, Lee Yo Won and Im Si Wan.

    Today,
change it with lee yu bi
to get BY married to MH.. and put an end to Ye forever!

and then change it with the judge of supreme court in kdrama that makes divorces illegal 🙂

    0
    1

      What’s the judge thing about?

But I meant their whole careers. Not just for a day or two but based on their careers from debut till now. For example, I really adore Kim Nam Gil’s versatility and self-awareness. He has such a deep awareness of his character and his costars and he’s also done a lot of interesting roles. And apart from acting, he’s done a lot of cool stuff too.

Hey Bam Gent, we have similar lists! What do you like about Kim Mi Kyung? There are so many veteran actresses who’ve been awesome as supporting actresses it’s hard to choose

      1
      1

Oh we do! How cool. 🙂 I just love Kim Mi Kyung’s spunky, eccentric roles, and her inimitable way of speaking. Although in terms of veteran actresses, I adore Jang Young-Nam, too.

        0
        1

Unfortunately, I only remember Kim Mi Kyung’s performance in Oh Have Young Again. Will never forget the karaoke scene. I love, love Jang Young Nam though I’ve only watched her performance in The King Loves, Weightlifting Fairy Kim Bok Joo, and The Moon That Embraces the Sun

          1
          5

Ahh.. She stuck out the most to me in Healer. I love her portrayal of Ahjumma so, so much. The snarky genius, kimbap-and-knitting enthusiast with a penchant for eccentric sayings is honestly my role model. 😂

Oh, Jang Young Nam’s performances in both TKL and WFKBJ are so dang awesome! She just brings so much nuance and emotion to her roles, I absolutely love her. Should I watch TMETS?

            1
            0

Jang Young Nam only appears in the first episode. Siwan is in the first 5-6 episodes as the younger version of Heo Yeom, the brother of Han Ga In’s character. The plot was really simple and Han Ga In’s character had a lot of damsel in distress moments but somehow the show still sucked me in. Guess I’m a sucker for love stories

            1
            0

Guess I’ll watch it, then. Two of my faves, even in smaller roles.. I’ll check it out.

            1
            0

It’s definitely worth watching for Siwan’s performance but even after the kids grow up, there’s Kim Soo Hyun and Jung Il Woo!

I mean… it’s not super popular you know. You’re the only superfan that I’ve heard rave about this drama on db. And I’m sure you’ve introduced beanies to this drama and they’ve liked it but still it’s not a really big hit

      1

Don’t get me wrong. I like this drama. I just think it’s underrated and don’t understand why it isn’t a bigger hit

      1
      1

Agree. I think this drama is well received here, but not really popular in other places. It’s hard to find ppl share any clips from this drama. Luckily it was well received in Korea. Maybe because no flower boy, no romance, just a normal leading guy.

Can anyone tell me if the string instrument heard in the opening is a haegeum?

1
5

Also…. can anyone tell me what other drama OSTS Yesong has sung for? I’m so in love with his voice.

    0
    0

I believe it’s a Haegeum. A traditional 2 stringed instrument which originated in China but can be found all over Southeast Asia by different names. Here it is played with an orchestra accompaniment: https://youtu.be/EK9ozRHcNb8

    0
    1

I thought it sounded a lot like the Chinese erhu which is the Chinese two-stringed fiddle but I wasn’t sure cause period drama productions do use violins in their OSTs sometimes right?

      0
      1

Yes, they do, but this sound is definitely not a western stringed instrument. I played violin in a couple orchestras all through college. It is more airy and the notes bend more. Listening to the YouTube vid, you can hear the difference between the strings in the orchestra and the instrument itself.

        0
        1

thanks for quelling my doubts! I’m not really sure what you meant by the notes bending… Don’t have much an ear for differentiating sounds haha.. but to me, Asian stringed instruments like the erhu and the haegeum have plaintive, mournful voices. I think the erhu was also used in Three Inches of Heaven, one of the themesongs for the 2011 adaptation of Scarlet Heart.

Feeling a little empty and lost now that Misaeng has ended for me. Had this long list of dramas that I wanted to go through but now I have no appetite for any of them. What\’s this syndrome I have?

12

You could… rewatch Misaeng? 😂 I’m sorry, that was all I could do when I finished that drama.. I had a hard time moving on.

    3

That’s the effect of Misaeng. It’s not a drama slump. Missing is just that good, that everything else will pala in comparison. Take a week or so from watching dramas, that may help.

    6

Great advice for when a drama moves you so deeply you can’t move on. It honors the art.

I thought about it. I was really craving more of Im Shi Wan. I looked for One-Line but the English subs were hardly comprehensible. Downloaded The Merciless but wasn’t in the mood for gang plots.. So I turned to The King Loves and though it’s nowhere close to the great sageuks but it did help with the cravings. He’s just so compelling.

I finished One Line last night. He was awesome in it. Well, everyone was awesome in it but I particularly love Siwan’s heartfelt confession. The plan is to watch 1 of his works once a month until he’s out of the army

          1
          1

Have you watched The Merciless too? I liked the duality of his character

            1
            0

Dramafever has One-Line and The Attorney. If you have access to the Viu app or the TVN channel, they have One-Line too. Sometimes you can find Korean movies on Amazon Prime too. I found The Merciless on fastdrama.co I think.
            The DVD is on yesasia.com

Umm, an English-subbbed version of Thoughts of Oppa/Thinking of Oppa/A Melody to Remember is really hard to find. I think yesasia is out of stock for the Korean DVD for this film. You’ll need a region-free DVD player if you’re gonna get the Korean one. There are Eng subs in the Korean DVD.

Oh I just found A Melody to Remember on fastdrama.co They must have uploaded it a few weeks ago!

He, himself, grew up in a single parent family with just his dad T.T It must be a relatability thing

    1
    1

One of his very old dramas was Wonderful Mama, where he is one of three children raised by a single mother. But, she is diagnosed with Altzheimers, so *spoiler* (minor, it is the premise of the drama), he ends up living without his mother in the end with his little sibling family. Kinda fits the mold of his dramas without a mother, but also kinda with a mother.
