Kim Myung-min has done melodrama, thriller, sageuk, comedy, sageuk comedy, action, mystery — so now it’s time to take on the disaster genre. He has wrapped filming on his latest movie, Pace Maker, and signed on to star in a movie that I dearly hope adopts a cooler English-language title than its literal translation of Hairworm [연가시].

The movie is about the hairworm parasite, which lives by burrowing into the bodies of insects, emerging from their hosts once grown. Apparently it can even force the hosts to behave unnaturally, like throwing themselves into water. It’s like Alien for the buggy set. *Shudders.* In the movie, the hairworm begins to attack people, who start dying one by one for seemingly no reason, and Kim Myung-min plays a pharmaceutical company salesman who fights to save his family.

You’ve seen the stills of a tough-looking Ha Ji-won in sci-fi action blockbuster Sector 7 — now watch her in action in the movie’s new preview, where she battles some kind of mutant sea monster while out on an oil rig.

The movie concept admittedly isn’t too original or complicated — it’s positioned itself as a “Host at sea” and amped up the badass Ha Ji-won angle — but if they can sneak in some clever surprises, it could be a fun summer flick. I thought The Host was awesome and don’t expect this one to be nearly as good in story (too similar to escape the knockoff vibe), but for sheer action/octane, Sector 7 is going in with guns blazing — gnarly CG monsters, explosions, fierce hand-to-tentacle combat, 3-D camera work.

Ha Ji-won looks ready to kick some major evil-creature ASS. Upcoming summer blockbuster Sector 7 is whetting our appetites just enough to get us clamoring for some actiony goodness. The 3D creature feature from the director of May 18 and the producer of Haeundae has been years in the making, and from the looks of it, it might be worth the wait.

The action/sci-fi film is set on an oil rig out at sea, where the inhabitants will encounter Mystery Monster, reportedly in development for its 3D CG effects for two years before the film went into shoots. It boasts a 10 billion won budget, and well, it sure does look slick, though I suppose most of the dough was spent on the creature from the big bad blue.

Let’s take a first look at the 3D blockbuster Sector 7, the action/sci-fi movie starring Ha Ji-won (currently showing some of her stunt chops in Secret Garden), movie veteran Ahn Sung-ki (May 18), and Oh Ji-ho (Chuno). The movie takes place out on an oil rig, and unfolds as the characters encounter a strange monster, Host-style.

The film boasts high-quality CG and 3D effects, and underwent a two-year pre-production period during which the monster was designed. At the American Film Market last month, Sector 7 sold to four overseas entities in advance of its release in Korea; those are TF1 in France, M Pictures in Thailand, and Scorpio East in Singapore and Malaysia.

The idea of a monster-at-sea movie isn’t terribly novel, but with the people involved, I can see the crossover potential for Sector 7. Director Kim Ji-hoon put out May 18 about the Gwangju massacre, and producer Yoon Je-kyun worked on blockbuster disaster flick and box-office smash Haeundae (also starring Ha Ji-won), as well as the well-received romantic comedy My Gangster Boyfriend (with Jung Yumi and Park Joong-hoon) and warm drama Harmony (with Kim Yun-jin).

The film wrapped filming on September 29 and is currently in post-production, aiming for a summer 2011 premiere.

Actor Min Suk, star of MBC DramaNet’s Chosun Police 3, has been cast in Ha Ji-won‘s new 3-D blockbuster film Sector 7, due out next summer.

The mega-budget sci-fi/action/horror film is set on an oil rig out at sea, and Min Suk will join the cast as the rookie underwater equipment manager. It stars Ha Ji-won as the kick-ass heroine, Ahn Sung-ki as the ship’s captain, and Oh Ji-ho as the engineer and Ha’s boyfriend.

The film began principal photography in June, and has long been in pre-production, working on creatures, CG, and 3-D effects. It looks like it’ll be a big spectacle from the producer of Haeundae and the director of May 18. I wouldn’t expect any less; Summer 2011 can’t come fast enough for those of us who haven’t seen a great sci-fi flick in ages.

With both projects in the works simultaneously, Min Suk will have to pull double duty, but what’s a little overtime for an up-and-comer?

After making her name in drama series like Green Rose, My Girl, and Chuno, Lee Da-hae is ready to make her movie debut. She has been cast in the 3D historical project Song of Springs [현의 노래], a project described as “a movie telling the life story of legendary court musician Woo Reuk, who opened up the world of sound in a world ruled by the sword.”

Woo Reuk was the creator of the gayageum, a classical stringed instrument, and will be played by Lee Sung-jae (Lawyers of Korea). Lee Da-hae’s character is Ara, the top dancer of Daegaya, a city-state of Gaya during the Three Kingdoms era. Film veteran Ahn Sung-ki (The Divine Weapon) plays a Silla general, while Moon Jung-hee (Oh My Lady) portrays a “mysterious woman of Gaya” described as a femme fatale who runs a bar. Speed Scandal‘s young cutie Wang Seok-hyun plays one of Woo Reuk’s students.

Song of Springs is based on a novel written by Kim Hoon and has been in pre-production for six years. It boasts a hefty production budget of 15 billion won and will be directed by Joo Kyung-joong, whose 2002 film A Little Monk won him the best director award at the Asia Pacific Screen Awards.

Ahn Sung-ki, Ha Ji-won

Ha Ji-won‘s blockbuster 3D action movie Sector 7 has packed its cast with more name stars just as it readies to begin shooting this week. Produced by the man behind last year’s disaster movie Haeundae and directed by the man behind May 18, the project has already got a high profile and a budget to match. The addition of more stars to its cast ought to build up more buzz for the The-Host-in-the-open-seas action flick.

The monster movie takes place out on an oil prospecting ship at sea, and it was announced two weeks ago that Oh Ji-ho (Chuno) would be joining the production as Ha’s engineer boyfriend. One of Korea’s most respected veteran actors, Ahn Sung-ki (May 18), plays the ship’s veteran captain.
