SBS nixes its Monday-Tuesday drama experiment

After a year and a half, SBS is ending its early Monday-Tuesday drama hour, which means that Paradise Ranch will be the last drama to air in that 9pm timeslot.

Can’t say I’m surprised, and I think this has been coming for a while. After a few early dramas put in solid runs, the rest of the offerings have sunk to single-digit ratings despite having no scripted competition (competitor stations KBS and MBC air the news).

Queen Seon-deok ends with Episode 62

Two dramas wrapped up today, paving the way for several new entries in the new year. On MBC, its long-running ratings monster Queen Seon-deok posted up a very respectable 35.7% with its finale, but while its number would be huge by any other standards, with Seon-deok it was met with mixed reaction. After having shot up to the mid-40s, they were hoping to be the first drama to break 50% in a long while, and didn’t achieve it.

On SBS (an hour prior), the revenge drama Angel’s Temptation ended with a 20.5%. Although the first half of its run had hovered in the 10% range, once Bae Soo-bin came on the scene to put his own revenge in motion, ratings shot up. (Meanwhile, KBS’s Invincible Lee Pyeong-gang is still ongoing, and drew in a 6.1%.)

[SPOILERS - highlight to read] Seon-deok‘s finale pitted Deok-man and Bi-dam against each other as he believed the trust to be broken between them and entered into their last battle. She maintained her trust in him through the end, and Bi-dam was brought before her and killed, uttering his last words, “Deok-man…” In Angel’s Temptation, Lee So-yeon’s revenge scheme ended as she and her enemy Kyung-hee, who was responsible for killing her father, both committed suicide. Ultimately, neither could be happy and brought about their own tragic ends.

Lee Yo-won said after the finale had aired, “It still doesn’t feel like it’s really over. As the title role, there were many things I was lacking, and I could feel that. However, I learned a lot.” After filming for 11 months and enduring a lot of difficulties, she said, “If I get offers to return to sageuk dramas, I’d like to do one really far off into the future.” About the ending, she said, “It was different that what I thought it would be. I thought it would end on a political note, but it became about Bi-dam’s love. It’s true that a lot of people must have felt envious over Bi-dam’s popularity. Kim Nam-gil is a lot like the character, so it was a lot of fun filming with him.”

The trendy drama Pasta will take over Seon-deok‘s timeslot come January. Pick the Stars replaces Angel’s Temptation at 9pm, and will be followed at 10pm by Jejoongwon.

How was 2009 for you?

With the year coming to an end, that means it’s time to take stock of the past twelve months (well, eleven really) in kdramas. The broadcast stations will be holding their awards ceremonies at the end of the month, and I’m working on my wrap-up of 2009′s offerings — as are some very talented (and prolific!) drama-watching fans — which I’ll post up closer to the end of the year.

But this is your turn to weigh in on what you liked or didn’t. I didn’t do a year-end poll last year (after putting one up in 2007) and people seemed to really want one, so it’s back.

Angel’s Temptation picks up in its timeslot

After a lukewarm beginning, SBS is seeing an upswing for its makjang melodrama Angel’s Temptation, which has risen from an initial 10% to nearly double that with this week’s episodes. As a result, it has been given an extension — albeit for only one more episode. It will now end with Episode 21.

SBS tried some schedule experimentation with this drama, whose original assignment to the prime-time Monday-Tuesday hour all but consigned it to ratings hell, since rival series Queen Seon-deok has been consistently crushing its competition. SBS therefore moved Angel’s Temptation up an hour — which has never been done before — to air uncontested by other dramatic fare, instead going up against news and documentary programming. At first, results were disappointing, but thanks to quick-moving revenge plots, the drama has been steadily rising in the ratings.

This week, Angel’s Temptation finally beat KBS News, which regularly pulls in about 18% ratings, with a 19.6% to the news hour’s 18.1%. Of course, it’s difficult to compare news to dramas when the ratings as we understand them are always relative to other drama series. In comparison, Mi-shil made her big exit in Queen Seon-deok an hour later to 42.3% ratings.

Following Angel‘s run will be the medical sageuk series Jejoongwon (starring Park Yong-woo, Han Hye-jin, and Yeon Jung-hoon), on January 4. No definite word is out yet about which hour Jejoongwon will air in, but its staff is anticipating a return to the normal prime-time schedule, as Seon-deok will be over by year’s end.

This article attempts to explain the ratings situation of the two dramas it discusses (Angel’s Temptation, You’re Beautiful) and frames their modest ratings (in the vicinity of 10% to 14%) in a positive light. It’s a pretty short article that only touches on the basics, but I’ve just seen another more in-depth piece about the latter drama that I’ll post up next, which expands on the point raised here.

Prime-time experiment disappointing for Angel’s Temptation

After several dramas fell to Queen Seon-deok‘s Monday-Tuesday domination over the past several months, SBS tried to experiment with its scheduling in order to protect its new Monday-Tuesday series Angel’s Temptation. It therefore shuffled its broadcast schedule to air Angel’s Temptation at a time where it would be unchallenged by drama competition from the other stations. (10pm is traditionally the prime-time drama hour, and Angel’s Temptation was the first prime-time miniseries to air in the 9pm hour instead.)

However, two weeks in, the experiment has provided middling results, with its first three episodes drawing 10.3%, 11%, and 11.3%, respectively. These are not awful numbers for a prime-time show, but when considering that it had no competition, the results are quite disappointing, and there is reportedly a high probability that the 9pm trial will die here. Adding to the letdown is the fact that Angel’s Temptation had been hoping to recreate the sweeping success of the over-40% ratings brought in by its predecessor, Wife’s Temptation. (Angel isn’t a real sequel, but the plot is similar and it comes from the same writer-director pairing.)

SBS had made the move to avoid losing another drama to Seon-deok, after Ja Myung Go and Dream both brought in ratings around and below the 5% mark. An SBS rep explained that they made the move to offer “a variety of choices” to viewers, but at the root of the issue was their desire to avoid Queen Seon-deok.

Since Angel’s Temptation is still early in its run, it is premature to decree the move a definite success or failure, but because the trial has been unimpressive thus far, those involved with the following drama, medical sageuk Jejoongwon, have openly stated that they are confident they will be airing back in the 10pm slot. SBS’s drama department is hedging their bets by saying, “The schedule can change at any time.”

SBS premieres new series Angel’s Temptation

Han Sang-jin of the just-ended Sons of Sol Pharmacy and Bae Soo-bin of Brilliant Legacy are two actors from the #1 and #2 dramas of the year (ratings-wise), and now they team up for Angel’s Temptation, which is SBS’s new revenge drama premiering today.

The interesting thing about this casting, as mentioned before, is that both men play the same character. And forget the nice, warm image portrayed by both men in their previous dramas; in case the guyliner wasn’t a tip-off, we’ve got a bad boy on our hands. Han Sang-jin marries the character played by Lee So-yeon (Why Did You Come To Our House) without knowing that she is solely out to avenge her own family; because of his father, her parents died and she lost her younger sister. Originally a nice guy from a rich family, he is a devoted husband completely in love with his wife, who only pretends to love him back. Therefore, he is heartbroken to learn of his wife’s adultery and undergoes a complete personality turnaround. Deciding on an extreme makeover, he undergoes drastic plastic surgery to emerge with Bae Soo-bin’s face and a revenge scheme of his own. (He also apparently shrinks an inch or so in the process, but we won’t quibble over little things like that, will we?)

If you’re only interested in seeing Bae’s appearance, you can wait until November 3; he doesn’t show up until Episode 8. But personally, I think Han Sang-jin is wonderfully warm, as we saw in Sol Pharmacy — enough that it might be painful watching his heart break into itty bitty little pieces onscreen.

Angel’s Temptation begins this week, and airs a full hour earlier than the traditional prime-time slot to avoid competition with MBC’s Queen Seon-deok.

Queen Seon-deok has SBS running scared

The upcoming Angel’s Temptation

Wow. It’s one thing to admit your competition is tough. But it’s another thing entirely to rearrange your station’s prime-time broadcasting schedule specifically to avoid going up against said competitor, as SBS is doing next month to give its dramas a shot against Queen Seon-deok.

Starting in October, they will actually air their Monday-Tuesday drama in the 9pm hour, rather than the standard prime-time 10pm hour where Seon-deok has been so dominant.

This is a pretty drastic — one might say desperate — move. It’s not unusual for rival stations to fiddle with drama premiere dates, pushing back a new show until a strong competitor wraps (as Ja Myung Go did to avoid going up against East of Eden and Boys Before Flowers). But shifting its prime-time schedule entirely is a big surprise. On one hand, it’s good that their drama(s) will be getting a shot to survive, but on the other, it feels like an admission of weakness.

It’s revenge vs. revenge in Angel’s Temptation

Bae Soo-bin won over viewers with his appealing character in Brilliant Legacy, but takes a different turn as a revenge-seeker in SBS’s upcoming makjang drama Angel’s Temptation [천사의 유혹].

The drama comes from the writer of Wife’s Temptation and director of First Wives Club, and had initially cast Yoon So-yi in the lead role. However, Yoon dropped out citing health concerns, and Lee So-yeon (Why Did You Come to Our House) was brought in to replace her.

In Angel’s Temptation, the lead character (Lee So-yeon) seeks revenge for the ruin of her family, and marries into her enemy’s household. Her husband discovers her intent belatedly and decides on his own revenge. However, he loses everything in an accident, and resurfaces with his revenge plans intact — but with another face.

Sound familiar? However, Angel’s Temptation differs from Wife’s Temptation, in which Jang Seo-hee played two different roles. Here, the character’s two different looks will be portrayed by different actors — the “before” character will be taken on by Han Sang-jin, who is currently acting as lovable doof Sun-pung in Sons of Sol Pharmacy. Bae Soo-bin makes his appearance after the character undergoes plastic surgery.

Angel’s Temptation has also cast Kim Tae-hyun of White Lies, and will take over Dream‘s timeslot on Mondays and Tuesday nights. The drama begins filming this weekend and will premiere in October.
