Kye Baek is MBC’s newest sageuk, set to premiere next week and featuring Lee Seo-jin as the titular Kye Baek, a general of the Baekje nation.

Conventional sageuks aren’t really my bag (this one’s not as long as some others, being slated for 32 episodes), but even so, I’ll say that this one does look really beautiful, at least in the stills below. It seems they really spared no expense, with one battlefield scene including 400 extras who’d traveled down from Seoul to Gyeongju for a four-day shoot.

Lee Seo-jin is back in another sageuk with Kye Baek, playing the title role of the Baekje-era general, and recently participated in the drama’s poster shoot.

This drama boasts some big-name stars, like Jo Jae-hyun (New Heart), Cha In-pyo (Daemul), Oh Yeon-soo (Bad Guy), and Jeon No-min (Royal Family, Queen Seon-deok). A pretty strong lineup, I’d say.

Furthermore, this high-budget, large-scale fusion sageuk project is a re-teaming of Lee with Damo scriptwriter Jung Hyung-soo, as well as Yi San PD Kim Geun-hong. Between those two, sageuk credentials are substantial: PD Kim also produced The Duo, co-directed Queen Seon-deok, directed Jumong, and worked on the productions of Dae Jang Geum, Sang Do, and Heo Jun. Jung also wrote dark cable fusion series Yacha and Jumong.

We’ve seen these cast members of Daemul in scenes from the drama, but here are four more character stills featuring the main four leads.

Go Hyun-jung, as you know by now, plays Korea’s first woman president, Seo Hye-rim, while Cha In-pyo portrays the politician with strong leadership abilities, Jang Tae-san.

Kwon Sang-woo is cast as the iron-willed Ha Do-ya, who overcomes hardship to become a passionate prosecutor. (Boo, no more gigolo Ha Ryu? Are they changing his character around to make more room for Cha? There’s been a lot less focus on Kwon lately, and I don’t think it’s just because of his brush with police; there was brief talk of Kwon quitting after the story broke, but the rumors were soon quashed.)

Last but not least, Lee Soo-kyung departs from her sunny, down-to-earth image to play a haughty careerwoman who got her MBA abroad, Jang Se-jin.

Daemul will take over the Wednesday-Thursday slot after My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho and premieres on October 6.

Go said laughingly about the shoot: “My character came to debate a differing opinion with [Cha's character] Kang Tae-san, but Cha In-pyo is so good-looking that my feelings relaxed and I found it difficult to argue with him.”

Veteran drama actor (and ’90s hottie) Cha In-pyo (Reputable Family) is jumping onboard the Daemul train, joining stars Go Hyun-jung and Kwon Sang-woo in the much-buzzed-about production.

Cha will play a political rival to Go Hyun-jung’s character Seo Hye-rim. As a former human rights lawyer, he runs for office against her but loses, and she is elected the nation’s first female president. Kwon plays Ha Ryu, a high-class gigolo. (Ah, well if he’s high-class…)

Cha’s character is also a member of a top chaebol family that with a strong presence in the political world. Not only is he Seo Hye-rim’s political rival, his relationship with her is also complicated by love and conspiracy.

Directing Daemul is Oh Jong-rok, who by the way is not the original director from the drama’s first attempt at production. Oh also directed Piano and Style (and I have to remind myself that the reason Style ranks on my unwatchable list wasn’t because of the directing, but rather the awkward writing and acting).

The drama premieres in early October.

Actors Cha In-pyo (Crossing, Hanbando) and Han Go-eun (Can Anyone Love, Capital Scandal) have just been cast to head a new KBS1 daeha drama, or period project.

The series is called Great Family [명가] and will premiere on January 2. The story deals with one wealthy family that experiments with the concept of noblesse oblige, which is the idea that people born to lofty positions have a social responsibility to exercise generosity toward those in less advantageous circumstances. Cha In-pyo plays the lead character, who puts the concept into practice, while Han Go-eun provides his moral support.

There is some talk that there is dissatisfaction in political circles because part of the drama describes the founding of Yeungnam University, which was established by former President Park Chung-hee, who served as president in the 1960s and ’70s. However, a KBS represented refuted these as “groundless conjecture.” The source explained, “The drama only mentions that a family in Gyeongju donates money to found a university, but the process is not described in detail.”

Currently, the script is being written. This will be Cha’s first drama in three years, since acting in MBC’s White Tower, while Han was in the recent SBS weekend series Can Anyone Love.

Gu Hye-sun’s “Tango”; Cha In-pyo

More book news.

First, we have the new cover art (above) and a bit more description about the book being published by Gu Hye-sun (Boys Before Flowers), titled Tango.

Gu’s book is based on memories of her own bittersweet first love, though the fictionalized story first rose in her mind upon hearing Ryuichi Sakamoto‘s song “Tango.” (I posted that song in the previous post; below is a second version.)

It’s explained that the tango motif is linked to the story because in the dance, if the feet do not step together in time, they only hurt each other. The book will come with approximately 40 of Gu Hye-sun’s own illustrations.

But the more interesting book news, in my opinion, is that of veteran Hallyu actor Cha In-pyo (Crossing, Hanbando, Star In My Heart). Because while this is his debut novel, don’t write this off as a vanity project or mere ego-fluffery — his book deals with the issue of comfort women, which is a topic I find deeply compelling (the sexual slavery of hundreds of thousands of women, mostly Korean but also including Chinese, Filipina, Vietnamese, and those of other Southeast Asian nationalities, by the Japanese military in its imperial expansion years leading up to and during WWII).

SONG OF THE DAY

Ryuichi Sakamoto – “Tango.” I mentioned there was another version of this song in the last post and someone asked for it. This is the Japanese-language version of the same song. [ Download ] Incidentally, there’s also a slower Portuguese version: [ Download ] (Personally I like the Spanish one best.)

Yay! And yet, also boooooo — because it sounds like it may possibly end up really lame. Still, hope remains alive as long as he gets to show his acting chops, unoriginal story notwithstanding.

Who else looks at celebrity power couple Cha In Pyo and Shin Aera and remembers the old-school hit drama they were in together back when they were both young new faces, Love Is In Your Arms [Sarang eul gudae eui poom ahn ae]? I think it’s rather amazing they’ve stayed married (and both working over the years) for so long — over twelve years — and now they’re in the news again for adopting a baby girl.

Although Korea’s known for having been a large source of international adoptions, the practice is less common domestically, for lots of various reasons (which is why they put up campaigns like this one). Perhaps that’s why the couple has been on the receiving end of lots of praise for adopting, although they’ve expressed their surprise at the public reaction; they didn’t think it would result in such praise.

The couple already have two children (their second was also adopted, in December 2005) and had expressed intent to adopt again, but waited till now to allow their younger child time to adjust. Their biological son, Jung Min, is 11 years old; sister Yeh Eun is 4; and the youngest, new adoptee Yeh Jin, recently reached her 100-day milestone.

Tim – “고마운 기적” (Thankful miracle). I could do without the smooth jazz intro (whoa, shades of Kenny G) but otherwise a nice ballad. [ zShare download ]
