MBC hosted its awards ceremony for the 2008 Acting Awards on December 30. Let me first reiterate that I think these end-of-year broadcast-station awards are mostly meaningless. That said, this year’s Daesangs were TOTAL WEAKSAUCE, MBC. Top honor (the “Daesang” grand prize) went to…

Oh, you mean it was split this year? Between Beethoven Virus’s much-lauded epitome of awesomeness, Kim Myung-min, and East of Eden’s overblown and overrated Song Seung-heon?? I mean, I could understand going for the sentimental vote and awarding deceased Choi Jin-shil (she got a lifetime achievement instead), but Song Seung-heon winning acting awards is in itself a joke.

Choi Jin-shil up for posthumous Daesang award

MBC won’t be awarding its end-of-year winners until December 30, but it has revealed its acting award nominees, and the name of deceased actress Choi Jin-shil has been included as a candidate for the acting Daesang, or Grand Prize.

Essentially, these year-end fetes are just a way for stations to hand out trophies to all their actors, to keep them feeling special. Of all the awards ceremonies, I feel that these broadcast station awards mean the least, since practically any lead actor in a drama will be given one that year. Like a mere token. One look at the full list (posted below) should show you that most of these are a joke. (I mean, General Hospital JUST started airing, what, a week ago?)

Still, the Daesang probably carries a tiny bit more weight, since it’s the one that’s singled out as the top honor. And while Choi may not have had the meatiest role of her career in 2008 (that title goes to her 2005 tearjerker A Rosy Life), there’s a chance she may end up with the Daesang as a sort of posthumous tribute.

Other Daesang nominees who are having big years include East of Eden’s Song Seung-heon in his comeback drama and Kim Myung-min as the House-esque insult-slinging maestro in Beethoven Virus.

Jo Sung-min concedes in the custody war

Jo Sung-min is officially ending the ugly custody battle for his and Choi Jin-shil’s children. He gave a press conference to announce that he is giving up all claims to the children and leaving them to the care of their grandmother (Choi’s mother). Choi’s family’s lawyer was also present.

Jo has taken a public battering after he expressed his desires for a place in his children’s lives when their mother and primary caregiver committed suicide in October. He read a statement explaining that he had been accused of making a shameless grab for Choi’s money, which was never his intent. However, he recognizes that as a result of all the fighting between his side and Choi’s family’s side, many people were hurt.

Jo’s withdrawal from the matter now, he feels, is the best way to set things on the right path for Choi’s family and his children.

He’ll still be their father in name, but only in name: Jo has agreed to legally transfer the children’s guardianship to their grandmother, in accordance with the Choi family’s wishes. He’ll also withdraw any claims to power of attorney or the handling of Choi’s property.

Well. Behold the power of public opinion.

Jo Sung-min tells his side of the story

Deceased actress Choi Jin-shil’s ex-husband Jo Sung-min is changing his mind regarding the fight for child custody and inheritance rights (perhaps after the continued public outcry).

We’ve mostly been presented with the issue from Choi’s side, with her brother and mother speaking out to retain custody of the kids, bringing up Jo’s lackluster performance as absent dad to support their stance that he doesn’t deserve to win back his fatherly rights. While I generally feel that they’ve got a solid argument, the media has been awfully one-sided in painting Jo as evil. Now we get Jo’s perspective in a TV interview about his side of the story.

He appeared on November 18 on MBC’s PD Notebook, giving the program a 5% boost in ratings, to say that he will withdraw his claim to Choi’s inheritance. He explains that he’s fine letting Choi’s family handle her estate: “My only desire is to be a father to my children. I want to be able to see my children comfortably.” His stance is that even if he gives up a claim to Choi’s assets, he can’t give up a claim to his children.

Jo Sung-min faces opposition from a citizens’ campaign

Jo Sung-min is a baseball player and sports commentator, but he’s probably most famous for being ex-husband to the deceased Choi Jin-shil, who is now causing a stir as he attracts the ire of the Korean public for the continuing battle to claim custody of his kids.

Many have thrown their support behind Choi’s brother and mother, who are fighting to retain custody of the two children who were reportedly not even aware of their father’s existence. In fact, there’s even an online café that’s sprung up of people opposed to Jo’s taking custody of the children, and the members are organizing a candlelight vigil early next week to express their opposition. This event will take place in conjunction with a women’s organization as part of a “citizens’ campaign.” The exact details of the time and place have not yet been made public.

As of November 7, there were more than 5,720 netizens who signed their opposition, stating their displeasure with a law that would revert the children of a single parent to the ex-spouse upon the death of the caregiving parent. They accuse Jo of abusing this law to take the kids (and, presumably, Choi’s remaining estate), arguing that Jo gave up his parental rights upon his divorce, and the members plan to look deeper into Jo’s intention of adopting his children. (Question: If one must legally adopt one’s own children — Choi had won the right to register her children under her family name — doesn’t that mean that the children aren’t automatically in their father’s legal custody? *legal confusion abounds*)

The facts of the case paint Jo as a deadbeat dad who gave up all responsibility (if not legal rights) for caring for his kids four years ago. There’s also the part where he beat his ex-wife. On the other hand, he IS the children’s biological father and I’m sure there is more to any story than what the public knows.

But in any case, I’m a little in awe of the fact that citizens would take up the issue to advocate on behalf of a beloved deceased actress.

Actor Go Soo, above, held his first Japanese fanmeeting on Saturday, and apparently the only news agency sent to cover it was Yonhap News, whose pictures uniformly suck. [Yonhap News]

Koyote singer and actress Shinji (Unstoppable High Kick) was hospitalized on November 3 with acute kidney infection. Her manager reported that she had a fever of over 39 degrees Celsius (102.2˚ F) and was also diagnosed with overworking and stress. [Star News]

Rain’s little sister is getting married! It’ll happen sometime next year and Rain is feeling both brotherly and fatherly: “You know how they say fathers feel odd when their daughters get married? That’s how I feel, because she’ll become part of someone else’s family.” [Asia Economy]

Oh, and now that Rain has announced he once dated a “top model,” fans are clamoring to know who she is. He’s not telling, but he did promise to have a son eventually and raise a “second Rain.” Um, I don’t remember asking for that, Rain. [Hankook Ilbo]

Also, rumors of Rain’s death have been greatly exaggerated, and he is not happy. He says that he heard reports that he’d committed suicide when he was in China, and they were “hard to bear.” His first clue? When he started receiving a flood of concerned phone calls asking if he was okay. His reaction after reading reports was to think, “I’m really going to live a long time” to prove them wrong. Korea’s film industry is in a slump, so Kim Rae-won has taken a pay cut for his current film, Insadong Scandal. The star commands top dollar after the recent success of Gourmet, but reduced his salary to ease the burden on the film production. [Sports Chosun]

Wang Bit-na (she of Merry vs. Daegu Battle and the fab tartan gown at the recent “Love Your W” fundraiser) is taking to the jazz stage. On November 20-21, she’ll take part in the jazz concert “Yoon Hee-jung and Friends” and sing two songs herself. [Yonhap News]

Things look to be getting uglier in the custody battle for Choi Jin-shil’s kids. Following Choi’s suicide last month, her brother Choi Jin-young (also an actor, of Okay to Love) has taken care of her two children, but her ex-husband Jo Sung-min, who’s been a deadbeat dad for the past four years and has been known to previously have beaten his wife, has suddenly decided he wants to raise his kids, and Choi’s brother and mother are not having it. Mom says, “He left his wife and kids because he didn’t want them and thinks he has a claim to them — how does that make sense? He’s done nothing as a father. I cannot recognize his parental right.” Jo counters, “It isn’t that I gave up my rights, but that I relinquished them to Choi Jin-shil. I’m the only parent they have now, so the rights automatically come to me.” Yeah, automatic parenting! One step up from deadbeat parenting! [Segye, Sports Seoul]

Bada is set to take the role originated by Kim Ah-joong in 200 Pound Beauty in the musical adaptation. Critics are readying to compare her to Kim, saying, “She’d better bring it!” and Bada is responding, “Oh, it’s already been broughten!” Okay, maybe the actual words were more like, “I’m confident I can do it.” She also feels kinship to her character because in her SES days, her groupmates Eugene and Shoo wore sizes 44 and 55 (U.S. sizes zero through 4-ish) and she was the sole 66. Choi Jin-shil’s death spurs talk of cyber slander laws

If there’s something to take away from the overwhelming attention and the number of entertainers who came to pay their final respects to deceased Choi Jin-shil, it’s that she was much-respected and much-loved by many colleagues over the entire length of her 20-year career.

People are also taking her death as a sign of needing to strengthen cyber slander laws, citing examples in the past where Internet slanderers were prosecuted and fined for defamatory postings. An article in the Joongang Daily (English language) states:

[D]efamation by spreading false rumors is subject to up to seven years in prison but most get away with fines.

According to the Supreme Court of Korea, only 2 percent of slanderers are actually prosecuted. However, the number of online slander cases has been on the rise, from 316 in 2005, to 350 in 2006, 403 in 2007 and 213 in the first half of this year….

However, opposition parties including the Democratic Party said this is an attempt to regulate cyberspace to eliminate anti-government postings. The DP said the ruling party is trying to “use the suicide incident politically.”
