Tentative starts for new weekend dramas

Eugene of Creating Destiny

Two new dramas premiered this weekend, to mixed reactions: MBC’s Creating Destiny starring Eugene, above, and KBS’s Hot-Blooded Salesman, starring Chae Jung-ahn and Park Hae-jin.

Perhaps Tamra fans will feel vindicated (or further insulted?) to know that the drama that replaced it (after Tamra was unceremoniously slashed) pulled in even lower numbers; Creating Destiny only managed a very low 3.5% for its first outing.

Lee Dong-wook’s stuntman turns actor

What do you think? Does this guy look like Lee Dong-wook?

This is Jung Seok-won, a 24-year-old new actor who has been cast in Eugene’s new weekend drama Creating Destiny. He takes on the role of a freelance cameraman and Ki Tae-young’s friend. At the October 6 press conference for the drama, Jung explained that before turning to acting, he had been a stuntman and was hired to stand in for Lee Dong-wook. It was on that set that he first saw Eugene and took a photo with her, and now he’s excited to be working with her as an actor. (This must have been fairly recently with their 2008 movie Heartbreak Library.)

Jung also recalled his younger days when SES (Eugene’s old pop group) was a huge hit, when everyone carried around fan photos and paraphernalia. Of the group, he used to carry around Eugene’s photo: “I’m thrilled to be acting with her.”

Jung Seok-won has had small parts in drama productions like Brilliant Legacy, The World They Live In, and Working Mom, but already he senses the difference with this role: “In the past I would read the script and search through it, thinking, ‘When am I coming out?’ This time I don’t do that, and although I feel a bit of a burden, I feel very good.”

Posters and trailers for weekend drama Creating Destiny

Eugene’s new drama Creating Destiny [인연만들기] comes out this weekend, and here are some posters and previews to give you an idea of what to expect. (The copy in the above poster reads, “Are we really meant to be?”)

The main storyline features Eugene and Ki Tae-young as a reluctant couple set up in an arranged marriage. The hitch? He’s utterly uninterested in marriage, and she’s intending to marry her Western boyfriend.

Eugene talks about her new drama role

Creating Destiny [인연 만들기] is actress-singer Eugene’s next project, and the star recently spoke out about the cheerful romantic comedy. She plays a lawyer-to-be who had grown up in Australia, who has a “Tom and Jerry-like” series of encounters with Ki Tae-young, the man with whom she is set up for an arranged marriage. (I presume “Tom and Jerry-like” means their relationship is antagonistic, rather than one always trying to kill the other, who always outsmarts him.)

The drama features many veteran actors like Ban Hyo-jung, Im Hyun-shik and Kang Nam-gil, and is as much about familial love as it is about romantic love. Eugene explained why she picked this project, saying, “When I read the script, the plot was incredibly refreshing. … I think this will be an original drama. If you consider that most of the dramas these days show young people falling in love and their parents opposing the match, this drama starts off the compete opposite.”

Eugene explained that it was easier getting into character because she is similar to her character; they both enjoy romantic manhwas and grew up overseas. They both also have bright and upbeat personalities, so acting the part is not terribly difficult.

Creating Destiny is scheduled for an October 10 premiere.

Creating Destiny holds first script reading

The first script rehearsal for MBC’s new drama Creating Destiny (aka Making Fate or 인연만들기), was actually held almost two weeks ago on August 31 at the Ilsan Dream Center, although the photos have just now been released. In attendance were the drama’s leads — Eugene (Yoga School), Jung Seok-won (Brilliant Legacy), and Ki Tae-young (Terroir) — as well the supporting cast (Byun Woo-min, Kim Jung-nam, Im Hyun-shik, Kang Nam-gil, Geum Bora).

Creating Destiny is based on a mixing of two novels by romance fiction writer Hyun Go-woon. In it, a man who has no interest in marriage meets a woman who comes to Korea to marry her Westerner boyfriend. This upbeat romance series reunites its director Jang Geun-soo (Chunja’s Happy Events) with writer Hyun, as the two collaborated on the popular 2003 drama 1% of Anything.
