2011 KBS Drama Awards

Awards, awards, awards! And tons of pretty people.

As with yesterday’s MBC Drama Awards, note that winners are decided in part due to popularity, in part due to ratings and politics. That said, I don’t think anyone will argue with their Daesang winner, Shin Ha-kyun (below), who has been tearing it up on Monday and Tuesday nights with medical drama Brain.

Also no surprise was the awarding of runner-up acting prizes to The Princess’s Man‘s pair, Park Shi-hoo and Moon Chae-won (above), which bagged a number of awards.
As did weekend hit Ojakkyo Brothers.

Eugene drops drama project Color of Woman

It was only recently that newlywed Eugene announced her next TV project, a cable drama titled Color of Woman, but she has now dropped the show.

The reason cited is that Eugene’s younger sister was recently involved in a serious car accident back in Guam (where Eugene lived prior to becoming an entertainer), and Eugene has been worrying herself sick. Younger sister Yoo-kyung was reportedly standing behind her stopped car on a hilly road, and slippery conditions caused the car to slide, pinning her underneath it. Her spine was fractured in three places. Eeek.

According to Eugene’s agency, the star is still in shock and has been unable to sleep or concentrate. She had met with the drama’s producers for a concept meeting, but after consulting with them, both sides have agreed that Eugene would back out of the show.

Reps from Logos Film, who are producing Color of Woman, said, “We are extremely disappointed to lose Eugene as our lead, but we wish her sister a fast recovery. We are currently in the search for an actress who can play the role of confident careerwoman Byun Sora, and will select someone who can meet fans’ high expectations.”

Color of Woman is described as a comic melo portraying the rivalry between two careerwomen at a cosmetics company, with a frank look at romance. It is planning to premiere in December on Channel A.

Eugene’s sister has been admitted to a hospital in Guam and received emergency treatment, and plans are being made to transfer her to a hospital in Korea. Best wishes to both Eugene and her sister.

Eugene is coming back with her first drama post-marriage (to her Creating Destiny co-star Ki Tae-young), and has been cast in a new cable drama called Color of Woman.

Yeah, it’s an awkward title. I don’t love it. I suppose it could be a tie-in to the show’s setting, which takes place in a cosmetics company — as in, the color you add to make up a woman? Or maybe it’s trying to go for a poetic tone, as in The Color of Woman, only the title (which is in English, just written phonetically in hangul) leaves off the “the.”

2010 KBS Drama Awards

KBS just may have the longest winners list at the end-of-the-year award ceremony, but they do have the most programming. Not surprisingly, some of the big winners were expected names, like Baker King Kim Tak-gu, Cinderella’s Sister, and Chuno.

The Grand Prize of the night went to Jang Hyuk, who beat out Choi Su-jong’s president (of the nation), Jeon Gwang-ryul’s president (of a baking company), Kim Gab-soo’s president (of a makgulli factory), Lee Mi-sook’s scheming wife, and Moon Geun-young’s damaged daughter characters.

Red-carpet-wise, KBS’s event was much more interesting than MBC’s lackluster event the night before, and perhaps a step up from the slightly better SBS awards, although there was a curious abundance of white. Everyone wearing it looked great, but I had to wonder whether, if you put ‘em all together, they’d look like models at a bridal convention.

Eugene’s image transformation in High Cut

Eugene may be known for her wholesome prettiness, but she’s gone decidedly sexier for her latest photo spread, which features her wearing mostly lingerie. Eugene said of the shoot, “In my current drama Baker King Kim Tak-gu, I’ve taken on a new type of role as a villain. To match that, I wanted to take this opportunity to shed my previous image.”

In the drama, she plays Yoo-kyung, who is a character described as a femme fatale, which is a marked departure from the youthful innocence she is more known for. Back in her days as an idol star in girl pop group SES, she was called Korea’s fairy for her bright, cute image, which was reinforced by her roles in dramas like I Really, Really Like You; Three Dads, One Mom; and Creating Destiny.

Baker King’s official posters and preview video

Posters are out for Baker King Kim Tak-gu, the drama replacing Cinderella’s Sister this week. The one above features the four main leads: (from left to right) Eugene, Yoon Shi-yoon, Joo-won, and Lee Young-ah.

Press releases have tossed around comparisons to My Name Is Kim Sam-soon, but I wouldn’t expect much similarity, as those remarks are primarily due to both featuring patissiers as lead characters. I’m not quite sure what to make of the preview; it’s difficult to get a grasp of the tone from it. It has an offbeat retro vibe, which could be fresh and interesting or just plain awkward. But the drama seems to have an interesting stylistic flair, and is more visually appealing than its previous posters and stills portrayed.

Eugene juggles drama role with cable show

Eugene has a drama about to premiere (KBS’s Baker Kim Tak-gu starring Yoon Shi-yoon) but now she’s adding a cable program to her schedule; she has been chosen to host style network O’live’s new program Get It Beauty, which is currently in the works and will overlap with her acting gig. The drama begins in June, and the cable show in July.

Eugene seems a logical choice for the beauty program, which will feature skincare and makeup tips, as she recently put out her own beauty book. She also hosted a previous program on O’live, Eugene’s Makeup Diary, which was popular with viewers.

I’m not that interested in the cable program, but I do wonder how Eugene is going to manage two shows at the same time — Baker King Kim Tak-gu premieres next week. As it is being planned for approximately 30 episodes, she’ll be busy acting in it well through the summer and into fall. There have been a handful of stars who have hosted cable or variety programs while doing television dramas, but that just seems crazy, since doing one drama is enough to overwork some stars into exhaustion.

Baker Kim Tak-gu will replace Cinderella’s Sister and starts on June 9.

A new Wednesday-Thursday show is gearing up for its premiere, KBS’s Baker King Kim Tak-gu, which will replace Cinderella’s Sister after that show wraps up next week. With its production team, it looks like Baker King will have a much lighter atmosphere and provide a sharp contrast to the moody Cinderella’s Sister, as it brings together director Han Joon-seok (Capital Scandal) and writer Kang Eun-kyung (Oh Pil Seung Bong Soon Young).

The story features characters who aim to become patissiers, and the main cast is led by Yoon Shi-yoon (a breakout star of High Kick Through the Roof), followed by Eugene (Creating Destiny), Lee Young-ah (Iljimae, Golden Bride), and musical actor Joo-won. (And to be honest, based on the character stills released (see below), I could barely recognize the stars — I had to do a double take to confirm that the cast hadn’t in fact been swapped out at the last minute.)

Eugene publishes beauty book

Singer-turned-actress Eugene (currently in the weekend series Creating Destiny) is putting out her own book of beauty techniques and tips, called Eugene’s Beauty Secrets. The book was opened to preorders on December 10, and contains photos the star took herself on filming sets, personal anecdotes, and the beauty knowledge she has accumulated over her ten-plus years in the entertainment industry.

Korean stars seem to have perfected the art of fan service, and these types of books strike me as an extension of cyworld sites and mini-homepages more than anything else. Frankly I think this book sounds unremarkable, but if Lee Hye-young’s Beauty Bible is any indication, it’ll be a big hit. That book and its predecessor, Fashion Bible, were both bestsellers, which makes sense given Lee’s reputation for being a style-conscious fashionista. Eugene doesn’t have that image (she has always been cute and sweet as “Korea’s Fairy,” which was a nickname she was given since debuting as a teenager in a girl band), but she’ll probably sell well just on her name alone.

Eugene’s Beauty Secrets will be published on December 16.

Eugene of Creating Destiny

Two new dramas premiered this weekend, to mixed reactions: MBC’s Creating Destiny starring Eugene, above, and KBS’s Hot-Blooded Salesman, starring Chae Jung-ahn and Park Hae-jin.

Perhaps Tamra fans will feel vindicated (or further insulted?) to know that the drama that replaced it (after Tamra was unceremoniously slashed) pulled in even lower numbers; Creating Destiny only managed a very low 3.5% for its first outing.
