Upcoming tvN rom-com Twelve Men in a Year has released its posters and a new teaser,
highlighting a fun and whimsical take on leaving your romantic fate to the stars. Yoon Jin-seo plays Miru, a magazine writer who takes on a new romance column and launches headlong into a project where she dates twelve men, one for each astrological sign of the year. I like that the posters have taken that in the most literal sense, and set her amongst falling stars. So cute.

Go Jun-hee joins cast of Twelve Men in a Year

With the leads cast in tvN’s upcoming rom-com miniseries Twelve Men in a Year — that would be Yoon Jin-seo (Runaway Plan B, Return of Iljimae) and Oh Joo-wan (My Love By My Side) — it’s time to turn to supporting leads. Go Jun-hee (What’s Up Fox) joins the cast as a stylish, free-spirited photographer.

Her character is a pro about her work life, but not too concerned about things like romance. That’s not a lot of info, but she’ll probably be the friend to our heroine, who embarks on the mission to date twelve guys in the year before she turns thirty. Perhaps she’ll advise her, or maybe she won’t be of much help at all, given her indifference to dating. In any case, I can see Go Jun-hee in the role easily, since she’s a former model and known for her stylin’ fashion sense, and also has played slightly offbeat types before, like in What’s Up Fox (when she fell for the cranky, eccentric ajusshi 17 years her senior).

Twelve Men in a Year will premiere on February 15, a Wednesday, which means that cable channel tvN is expanding its prime-time programming to cover more nights. Ever since they joined the prime-time lineup, they’ve been sticking to one original drama per week (they do have other original dramas, which air outside of the standard prime-time broadcast slots), such as I Need Romance and Birdie Buddy.

When this drama hits airwaves, the channel will have Shut Up: Flower Boy Band on Monday and Tuesday nights, and Twelve Men on Wednesdays and Thursdays. It’s a great thing for diversified programming, but oy! A terrible thing for those of us already conflicted up to HERE (points two feet above head) about what to watch and how we’ll have the time to squeeze it all in without going crazy, or blind.

Do You Hear My Heart? premieres this weekend

Tomorrow is premiere day for MBC’s new weekend drama, Do You Hear My Heart?, and here are its official posters. Not that you can tell much about a drama from its posters, but I think they’re pretty and colorful — even if four of the five leads are practically sporting the same haircut.

(Okay, I’ll stop harping on the hair now. It’s just hard to see that mop and NOT comment on it, you know? I actually think that lead actress Hwang Jung-eum looks cute — but that’s because she’s cute in spite of her hair, not because it looks good. That goes for leading man Kim Jae-won, too.)

Behind the scenes of Do You Hear My Heart?

MBC’s new weekend drama Do You Hear My Heart? is readying for its premiere in two weeks, and recently held its poster shoots (see above and directly below). While the drama has been flying sorta under my radar, there are a couple points that have me potentially interested: the offbeat premise and the writer and director pair.

Do You Hear My Heart? is about the love story between a man who is deaf but pretends he can hear, and a woman who pretends to be dim-witted to spare the dignity of her dim-witted father. Aw. For once, something that departs from the norm! From that short description alone, I can imagine tons of narrative and character-development possibilities.

Do You Hear My Heart rounds out cast

Upcoming MBC weekend drama Do You Hear My Heart has rounded out its leading cast. The drama starring Hwang Jung-eum (Giant) as the resident Candy and Kim Jae-won (My Love Patzzi) as the hero has cast its second leads: Go Joon-hee, above left (Chuno, What’s Up Fox) and Nam Goong-min, above right (Birth of the Rich, One Fine Day), in the main love square. I rather like Go Joon-hee, although I haven’t seen her in much. She’s not stellar, but she’s got very expressive eyes, and has always been memorable in bit roles.

Also joining the cast is the young Kim Sae-ron, star of last year’s hit film Ajusshi, opposite Won Bin. She’s the envy of every girl in Korea, mostly because she got to do this, this, and this. What, not ME. I’m not jealous of a little girl! That’s absurd.

Behind the scenes are PD Kim Sang-ho of Fantasy Couple and writer Moon Hee-jung of Smile, You, so expect light, family fare, which will be a complete 180 from the timeslot’s current resident, Flames of Desire.

Do You Hear My Heart premieres Saturday, April 2 on MBC.

Jang Dong-gun marries Go So-young

On May 2, Jang Dong-gun married fellow actress Go So-young, and given Jang’s status as one of Korea’s most popular (and most loved) actors, the wedding was pretty much the equivalent of a fancy awards ceremony red carpet. There were approximately 500 (!) guests in attendance.

The wedding took place at Seoul’s Silla Hotel, which was preceded by a press conference (the ceremony itself was not open to the public or press).

Opening red carpet at the 14th Pusan International Film Festival

On October 8, the 14th Pusan International Film Festival, or PIFF, opened in Busan. (Yes, the city takes a different official spelling than the film festival. Blame inconsistent Romanization.)

As the largest film festival in Korea, it drew a large list of attendees, as you can see from the long list of red-carpet walkers. It was definitely a star-studded opening night, and even included one familiar Hollywood face (Josh Hartnett).

This year’s PIFF features its largest lineup to date, screening 355 films from 70 countries, and closes on the 16th.

Go Jun-hee takes the lead in a romance melodrama

Go Jun-hee (who switched to her stage name after first acting under her real name, Kim Eun-joo), is taking on a leading role in the film Hold Me Tight and Cry (that’s a loose translation for 꼭 껴안고 눈물 핑).

She acts alongside Lee Kyun (Hello Franceska), who is back onscreen (yay!) after completing his army service this year; he was discharged on March 11. Go’s character is an aspiring actress who falls in love with a married man while at acting school, although she’s the frank type of character who doesn’t hide her feelings. The plot sounds fairly common, so this film will probably rely more on the “unusual interpretation of love” it purports to explore.

Go Jun-hee has played supporting characters in dramas What’s Up Fox and General Hospital 2 and the movie Girl Scout. Directing and screenwriting is Kim Dong-won of the 2002 comedy film Bet On My Disco.

Did the Blue Dragon Awards sneak up on us this year or what?

As one of the largest year-end awards shows, the Blue Dragon always tends to draw out a good number of A-listers, and we saw plenty of them out on the red carpet on November 20 and posing pretty for photos.

One big winner of the night was the “kimchi Western” The Good, The Bad, The Weird, as was the thriller The Chaser and even the sports movie Forever the Moment, from way back in January.

But, as with any awards show, sometimes the fun is less about the actual awards and more about parsing all the red carpet looks.

Let the (interview) game begin

SBS’s new show Interview Game opened up its studio on the 21st for a press conference. The show is hosted by a panel of four actors — Go Jun-hee, Kim Ji-suk, Geum Bo-ra, and Yeom Kyung-hwan — and covers a range of topics in its interviews, often with a serious tone, from family, career plans, love, and others.

A case in point is the show recorded that day (and airing on the 22nd), featuring as its guest the older brother of deceased rapper Turtleman, aka Im Sung-hoon, who passed away in April of a heart attack. The brother, Im Joon-hwan, met with various people who’d known Turtleman through his life, such as a high school classmate who reminisced about how Turtleman had dreamt of pursuing music and wrote songs since high school. He also found out for the first time about a disappointed love his brother had experienced, a woman who’d been identified in one of his songs through her initials “KSK.” His groupmate Ji-yi explained that the woman had died while he was in military service; to escape being assaulted by some men, she’d been running away when she was struck in a traffic accident. Ji-yi recalled, “He cried whenever he talked about it.”

Apparently Turtleman had been going through a rough time, stressed and burdened with business matters. His brother, hearing this for the first time over the course of the show, was struck speechless for a while to hear what a hard time his brother had been facing. (Gah, this show sounds depressing. A review by Yonhap News has described Interview Game as setting off to a quiet start, and decried a lack of rapport between the interviewers and interviewees.)

Meanwhile, host Kim Ji-suk explained his anticipation of the shows to come, explaining that unlike most other reality and variety programming, Interview Game is completely unscripted; all of its laughter and touching moments are “100% real.” Asked who he’d personally like to interview most, he answered, “I’d really like to try interviewing the president of my management company. I’d like to hear what he plans for my future.”

Go Jun-hee told reporters that the show has received lots of interest in people who’d like to participate. Personally, she’d like to interview her parents: “I’d like to ask who my father’s best friends are, the places my mother frequents.” (Because I’m sure these questions are only worth asking on television? You have this great new platform, are asked about hypothetical interviews you’d love to do, and you pick your boss? Or your parents? Come on, I know you guys are actors, but how about some answers that aren’t quite so narcissistic?)
