SNL Korea picks Gong Hyung-jin as its second host

Cable channel tvN has announced the next host of its newly unveiled Saturday Night Live Korea, which kicked off its run this past weekend with actor Kim Joo-hyuk as the inaugural host. Number 2 honors go to Gong Hyung-jin, who I think is a perfect choice: The guy is hilarious, fast on his feet, and has sharp comic timing.

I’m also betting he was already signed on to do the show a while in advance, because he had a bit part in the first episode. If you’ll recall, Kim Joo-hyuk started off his monologue by expressing his pride in being picked as the first host — only to have the screen shrink, his voice drowned out, and a string of other celebs turning down the gig, which included Gong Hyung-jin (refer to pic below).

Trailer and stills for romantic comedy Couples

Here’s a look at the romantic comedy film Couples, a funny look at modern dating through the various ways that five single people can cross paths with each other and become fated to change each other’s lives… for better or worse. The players: Lee Shi-young (Poseidon) is the heartless girlfriend who disappears one day with nothing but a text message. Kim Joo-hyuk (Terroir) plays her heartbroken puppy dog boyfriend, who tries desperately to track her down. Lee Yoon-ji (Dream High) plays a cop who still clings to the fake diamond ring her last boyfriend gave her before leaving. Gong Hyung-jin (The Duo, Runaway) plays a man who doesn’t believe that love exists, and Oh Jung-sae (Korea) is the guy who’s in love with his friend’s girl.

Cast of new romantic comedy film Couples

Lee Yoon-ji (Dream High) and Lee Shi-young (Dangerous Meeting, Playful Kiss) have been cast to headline a new romantic comedy, opposite leading man Kim Joo-hyuk (Terroir, Sleeping With the Enemy) and hilarious everyman Gong Hyung-jin (The Duo, Runaway). I can already see the comic potential in this oddly grouped foursome. Some bizarre love square with a dash of quirky charm?

The film is called Couples, though the plot is more about the strange coincidences that surround one couple, and the various intersecting combinations as they go their separate ways. Kim Joo-hyuk plays a man whose girlfriend disappears without a trace, leading him to search for her. This sort of character is always asking for trouble, because why wouldn’t you just assume she left you? Perhaps his ego won’t let him accept it, which would make for a great character. Lee Yoon-ji will cross paths with him, and they form a curious connection. Lee Shi-young plays the disappearing girlfriend, and Gong Hyung-jin plays a gang leader who crosses paths with her.

The Duo adds comic veteran Gong Hyung-jin

MBC’s switched-at-birth historical drama The Duo is adding a familiar face to its cast with Gong Hyung-jin, whose last sageuk role was in the fusion action series Chuno. He’s jumping up a few rungs on the social ladder with this new character, from runaway slave to police officer. That’ll pair him with Gwi-dong (Lee Sang-yoon), the policeman born to a runaway slave mother who was swapped with a nobleman’s son and raised an aristocrat. (His counterpart, born an aristocrat but then raised in poverty, is played by Chun Jung-myung.)

Trio of Chuno veterans return for Runaway

Three familiar faces from Chuno will be back for the writer-director pair’s new drama Runaway, adding some solid talent to the supporting cast. In Chuno, Sung Dong-il had played the slightly unhinged slave hunter Jin-ho, Gong Hyung-jin played escaped slave Up-bong, and Jo Hee-bong was Kkeut-bong.

In Runaway, Sung Dong-il again shows off his sly side, this time as a Korean-Japanese gyopo who is a wily private eye named Nakamura Hwang. (He’ll be pulling double-duty, since he’s also been cast in a comic role for My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho, which will also air in the fall.) Gong Hyung-jin plays Rain’s supporter in China, Master Jang. Jo Hee-bong (whom I’ll always remember for doing crazy so convincingly as Hong Gil Dong‘s king) plays a cool-headed private detective named James based in Vietnam and Thailand. All three actors have built their characters playing memorable, often quirky, supporting roles, and chances are good they’ll be doing the same here.

Furthermore, Han Jung-soo (General Choi) is also reportedly signed on for a Runaway cameo.

The drama features a slew of name actors in its main cast with Rain, Lee Na-young, Daniel Henney, Lee Jung-jin, and Yoon Jin-seo onboard. It will air in late September.

Jang Dong-gun marries Go So-young

On May 2, Jang Dong-gun married fellow actress Go So-young, and given Jang’s status as one of Korea’s most popular (and most loved) actors, the wedding was pretty much the equivalent of a fancy awards ceremony red carpet. There were approximately 500 (!) guests in attendance.

The wedding took place at Seoul’s Silla Hotel, which was preceded by a press conference (the ceremony itself was not open to the public or press).

Hyun Bin feels burdened by good-guy image

On March 11, Hyun Bin was a featured guest on the radio show Gong Hyung-jin’s Cine Town, in which he spoke honestly about his career and current projects. In the program, he called his earnest good-guy image “stifling” and explained, “I’d like to live it up and have fun, and enjoy things that other people my age enjoy on a daily basis.”

He also talked about his current project, the Late Autumn remake, which just wrapped shoots in Seattle. Of working with Tang Wei, he said, “She has a very different acting style from me, so at first we were going in different directions. But as we kept shooting, we worked together very well.”

With over 90% of his dialogue in English, he explained that “before the film began shooting, I went to Seattle early and studied English for two months. That helped a lot.” (In the beginning, I’d felt dubious of whether he could pull off a film entirely in English, but it appears his and Tang Wei’s characters are both immigrants. Thus keeping their native accents is actually part of the film’s intention.)

Prior to the broadcast there was speculation about whether he would speak up about his high-profile romance with fellow actress (and The World They Live In co-star) Song Hye-gyo. Unfortunately for the curious, he did not.

Press conference day for Chuno

The wait is almost over — KBS’s upcoming fusion sageuk thriller Chuno (aka Slave Hunters) is two weeks from its premiere, and held its production press conference on December 21.

All the actors from the main cast were present, led by the drama’s three main stars Jang Hyuk, Lee Da-hae, and Oh Ji-ho. The series will take over for IRIS‘s Wednesday-Thursday timeslot in the new year, and Jang Hyuk said regarding that: “There are a lot of advantages that IRIS ended with high ratings. Also, because we have a completely different topic than IRIS, viewers will be able to feel a fresh, different appeal.”

Han Hyo-joo goes from Cinderella to Chuno

With her hot drama Brilliant Legacy heading toward its close (and achieving a 40% rating), Han Hyo-joo has picked out her next drama, which she’ll begin filming right away. The series is Chuno [추노, or Pursuing Servants] and it casts Han in the role of a daughter to servants (sometimes translated as slaves, though there are arguments against that nomenclature) in the mid-Joseon era.

She will act alongside Jang Hyuk (Tazza) and Oh Ji-ho (Queen of Housewives), who are two actors who strike me as seeming rather “modern” for a sageuk like this (Han has previous sageuk experience, although Iljimae was really a fusion drama). However, I have to look upon this drama with a favorable eye if only for its director, PD Kwak Jung-hwan, who also did the wonderfully dark fusion sageuk thriller Conspiracy in the Court [한성별곡]. Writing is Level 7 Civil Servant screenwriter Chun Sung-il.

Aside from Jang Hyuk and Oh Ji-ho, Lee Jong-hyuk (Crush and Blush, Rivals) and Gong Hyung-jin (I Love You, Dal Ja’s Spring) have also been cast. Okay, one WTF moment: I understand that Oh Ji-ho’s career has experienced a rejuvenation with Queen of Housewives‘ massive popularity, but he’s not really getting top billing over Lee Jong-hyuk, is he? (And in a historical drama to boot?)

The drama is produced by the company behind Level 7 Civil Servant, Harimao Pictures, and is scheduled to air on KBS Wednesdays and Thursdays in October following Please Take Care of the Lady (aka the former Lady Castle).

A look at SBS’s upcoming “I Love You”

SBS’s current Monday-Tuesday drama, sageuk King and I, is coming to a close, and moving to replace it is the upcoming drama billed as “a lively and sweet love story for a different, new-generation couple,” I Love You. The romantic-comedy series is based on a manhwa of the same name, whose creator also wrote the manhwa upon which the upcoming drama Gourmet is based. Following in the newer trend, the 16-episode drama has already finished filming, meaning its production will have completed well before its premiere date in March.

Starring are Ahn Jae Wook (Oh Pil Seung Bong Soon Young, Star in My Heart) and Seo Ji Hye (Over the Rainbow) in a somewhat mismatched pairing — he’s 36 (counting by Western standards), she’s 23 — although the unlikeliness of the couple is part of the point. Her naive 21-year-old bank employee character meets his 35-year-old comic-book-writer character on the subway, and mistakes his behavior for harassment. Thus begins their relationship, which complicates when she becomes pregnant and he’s less than thrilled about it.

Also cast are Hwan Hee of pop ballad duo Fly to the Sky in his second acting gig (his first was alongside Seo Ji Hye in Over the Rainbow), who’ll be paired with new actress Park Hye Young, as well as philandering lawyer husband Gong Hyung Jin (who played philandering Sae Do from Dal Ja’s Spring) and his long-suffering wife, Jo Mi Ryung.

The drama differs from its original source — the manhwa starts with the couple’s marriage, whereas the drama starts pre-wedding — and handles such issues as premarital pregnancy, abortion, cheating, and other sex-related topics “in a light fashion.” Ahn Jae Wook explains, “If the topic of premarital pregnancy is treated overly seriously, the drama becomes less like a light show that can be watched with family and more like a documentary.” Seo Ji Hye adds: “Filming this drama has made me think lots of happy fantasies of married life, and it makes me want to get married.”

Hmm, I’m on the fence about this one. I’m all for a light-hearted series, but Seo Ji Hye and Ahn Jae Wook seem such an awkward pairing — which I know is the point — that I’m not sure how I’ll like it. And I haven’t really enjoyed anything SBS has put out recently — their series have nice acting and nice moments but the ones I’ve seen recently tend to the low-stakes, low-tension end of the spectrum.
