He’s back! He went off to the military as a sweet loverboy boss in Coffee Prince, and came back a different man in his upcoming movie, The Crucible. If you’ve seen the trailer, damn — he takes his acting skills up a notch…or two…or three. In this Star News interview, Gong Yoo talks of his years in the military, what it’s like to be back and shedding his image as the typical leading romantic actor.

Gong Yoo has been typecast as the gentle and romantic guy in his previous projects. And why not? He was boyishly charming in Coffee Prince, and adorkably cute in Finding Mr. Destiny. But he has taken a huge leap in his acting with The Crucible, which is based on Gong Ji-young’s novel of the same name. The novel is based on a true story of the terror that went on behind closed doors at a school for the deaf. (It makes me just shudder to think that the ones you should be able to entrust your chidren to can turn out to be the definition of evil in human form.)

The movie is reportedly dark, chilling, and terrifying. Gong Yoo read the novel during his days in the military and was shocked and horrified. He decided that if the novel was ever made into a movie, he would become a part of the project. Then his personal magic genie (a.k.a talent agency) went on to buy the rights to the film, and a movie was in the making.

Speaking of whom, here he is modeling for premium dessert cafe Mango Six, which is a new concept cafe launched by the same CEO behind Cafe Bene and Hollys Coffee, and is a joint venture with entertainment agency N.O.A (who represents Gong Yoo). Despite being four years out, Gong Yoo is still best known for his 2007 drama Coffee Prince, and is trading on that image for this campaign. Which seems as good a strategy as any, since that image happens to be sweet and gentle, and appeals to the ladies.

Gong Yoo (Finding Kim Jong-wook) and Jung Yumi (Oki’s Movie) have been cast in the movie Crucible, which is adapted from a novel of the same name by author Gong Ji-young. (I’m not very up on the Korean literary scene, but Gong is a name I recognize, having been recommended to me by a friend and also by my mother; she’s a popular and well-regarded novelist.)

The book is based on a real-life rape case that occurred at a Gwangju school for the deaf, albeit reworked into a fictionalized retelling. The story centers around a teacher at the school and a human rights activist; the plot unfolds after an assault occurs in secret at the school, and follows the process as the tragedy is uncovered and becomes known to the outside world. Gong Yoo will play the teacher who is helped by Jung Yumi’s activist character, the latter of whom possesses a strong sense of justice and is an administrator at a human rights activism organization.

…And girlfriday gets on plane.

Gong Yoo (Finding Kim Jong-wook, Coffee Prince) has decided to start the holiday season off the right way, by giving out hugs to fans. Really, there’s pretty much nothing better you could get me for Christmas. Hugs? From cutie? I’m there!

The event, called Hug Day, is a chance for Gong Yoo to sneak up on a theater full of fans (who are watching his latest movie Finding Kim Jong-wook, natch) and surprise them with hugs. He’s done surprise individual meet-and-greets at theaters already, as a show of appreciation for all the warm responses he’s getting for the film. But this time, there will be HUGS. The event will take place today, at a theater in Seoul.

Curses, Universe, for your space-time continuum and your insistence on shackling us with it. Oh well. On to Plan B: body swap with teddy bear.

Gong Yoo (Finding Kim Jong-wook, Coffee Prince) poses for a spread (snerk) in High Cut, in a theme that’s somewhere between “WTF you lookin’ at?” and “I’ve got a surprise for you in my pants.” You think I’m joking. But I’m not.

So…we’re going with Surly Bad Boy, are we? That’s fine, all rumpled hair and silly socks. But why in every picture are you trying to split your pants? Is it a comment? Not that I don’t respect a man who leads with his crotch, but you’re making it really hard to look elsewhere. I get it. You’re proud. That’s nice for you.

My boyfriend brought me flowers! Wait…did I just say that out loud? … Oh, like you weren’t thinking it. Why he’s dressed up like a lounge singer to do it is beyond me, but hey, that smile makes up for a lot. It covers over a multitude of sins, as they say.

It’s Gong Yoo, Im Soo-jung, and puppies. Need I say more?

The stars of the upcoming romantic comedy Finding Kim Jong-wook got together for a Vogue shoot and interview, looking every bit their adorable selves. And as if they weren’t cute enough already, someone gave them puppies to hold. It’s like a caramel apple, dipped in marshmallow, with a chocolate shell.
