It’s the same old, same old for Andre Kim in Bali

Fashion designer Andre Kim must be feeling secure in his “veteran” status as an old eccentric, because he keeps trotting out the exact same show, year after year. He may swap out his main models but not his actual clothing.

Each show has his leading lady (this time “Barbie Doll” Han Chae-young) dressed up in voluminous dresses of similar silhouette and varying shades of color, with a teardrop-headdress reminiscent of nothing so much as a Bedazzled hairnet. The male (Park Shi-hoo) is decked out in stiff multilayers in a cross between a business suit and a suit of armor, except for the purple outfit where he looks like a woodland fairy nymph. Both look like they come from a Star Wars acid dream.

And you can’t forget the piece de resistance: In the middle of the stage, there’s always a pose with the lady running — with anguish! and emotion! — into her man’s arms, and the man dropping a kiss on her forehead.

Yup. Sums it up for the “new” Andre Kim Fashion Art Collection which showed in Bali on August 25 for the International Bali Fashion Week ‘08.

New clothes for Barbie

I’ll admit I don’t really care so much about this news, but the pictures sure are pretty — they’re so bright and lively and candy-colored.

Korea’s “Barbie Doll” (so noted for her tall, leggy and well-endowed proportions) Han Chae Young (Delightful Girl Chun Hyang, Fireworks) is joining the celebrity trend and launching her own clothing brand, to be called RACHEL HAN’S (Rachel is, I believe, her American name from her days living in the States). Not the most creative appellation, but I’m sure nobody’s looking at Hancy to critique her word choices. Her line will be produced in conjunction with online retailer G Market.

After getting married last year, Han Chae Young made her theatrical debut in the stage play Awkward People; after acting in Are You With the One You Love? and Lovers, she’s not currently attached to any projects.

Star or Serious Actor? Go So Young and Song Kang Ho

Just as a sidebar, this article is horribly written but interesting in content if not execution. I tried to preserve the wording (which often smacks of juvenile rhetoric) but I did gloss over some redundant word repetition, and such as, for readability’s sake.

Also, on a more relevant note, the word “actor” used throughout the article doesn’t just refer to the general profession — it’s used in the context of serious acting, acting as an art form. Kind of like what we’d call a “character actor” in Western cinema terms.

Stars dreaming of being actors vs. Actors dreaming of being stars

Kim Tae Hee, Jeon Ji Hyun, Go So Young… They’re the top stars enjoying the most popularity these days. They have nothing to envy in terms of looks or wealth. They’re Korea’s top stars, but it’s not quite easy to call them actors. And that’s because of their fatal weakness: acting ability. And they aren’t the only ones, either. Most of the young top stars these days succeed based on their looks, but have been unable so far to receive recognition for their acting. …

The premiere of “Awkward People”

Actress Han Chae Young debuted onstage in her first theater performance today (Dec. 7; the play runs through next March) in acclaimed director Jang Jin’s “Awkward People,” (read more about the play here). The play is reported to show a delightful, warm sense of humor and quirky dialogue between the two characters — a bungling thief and a bungling middle school teacher.

After the first afternoon performance for the press, the actors and director answered questions at a press conference. Check out more pics from the performance below.

Han Chae Young’s offbeat theatrical debut

Starting on December 7 and running through March 2, 2008, actress (and Korea’s “Barbie Doll” — for her tall, shapely proportions) Han Chae Young begins her performance in the play Inept People [서툰사람들] (alternate translations: “Awkward People,” “Clumsy People”). The play marks Han Chae Young’s debut theatrical role and kicks off the upcoming wave of heated theatrical competition. (Also performing in upcoming plays: high-profile stars Go Soo, Yoo Ji Tae, Hwang Jung Min.)

Notable among its winners were the multiple talents behind one of Korea’s most critically acclaimed films of the year, Secret Sunshine — which won raves at Cannes Film Festival, where its also won its star, Jeon Do Yeon, the top acting honor.

Take a look at the winners and attendees after the jump…
