Awards, awards, awards! And tons of pretty people.

As with yesterday’s MBC Drama Awards, note that winners are decided in part due to popularity, in part due to ratings and politics. That said, I don’t think anyone will argue with their Daesang winner, Shin Ha-kyun (below), who has been tearing it up on Monday and Tuesday nights with medical drama Brain.

Also no surprise was the awarding of runner-up acting prizes to The Princess’s Man‘s pair, Park Shi-hoo and Moon Chae-won (above), which bagged a number of awards.
As did weekend hit Ojakkyo Brothers.

Today saw the finale episode for the KBS series Gumiho: Tale of the Fox’s Child, which took a new spin on the gumiho myth. The drama was never able to be a serious ratings contender going up against bigger competitors like MBC’s Dong Yi and SBS’s Giant, but overall I’d characterize Fox Child as having a pretty satisfactory run.

Fox Child started with single-digit ratings that crept up week after week, and the last two episodes logged a 11.3% and 12.9%, according to AGB numbers, or a 13.9% and 16.1% via TNS. (The Tuesday numbers for its competition were 26.8% for Dong Yi and 21.6% for Giant.) From the outset, I’d expected this show to be a mania drama at best (rather than a mainstream hit) due to its horror-niche bent, and for a mania series those numbers are quite solid.

I haven’t covered Gumiho: Tale of the Fox’s Child much since it began airing, which is mostly a factor of not having enough time. But the drama has attracted a steady, if smallish, fanbase who are drawn to the drama’s fresh take on a familiar genre of summer horror fare.

Here are some candid photos capturing comic moments between the cast, taken between shoots, and the lighthearted feel here contrasts with the darker mood of the series. Above is Han Eun-jung as a gumiho, while young Kim Yoo-jung plays her daughter.

KBS’s Gumiho: Tale of the Fox Child is all set to premiere tomorrow, in the timeslot vacated by My Country Calls, which ended last week. On July 1, the cast of KBS’s Gumiho: Tale of the Fox Child held their production press conference. And while Han Eun-jung is the headliner, I’m wondering if (and hoping that) the two girls actually run away with the story.

Kim Yoo-jung plays Han’s half-human, half-fox child, and Seo Shin-ae is a sickly, cranky nobleman’s daughter. They were born on the same day and their fates become linked as Han and her daughter run away and meet Seo’s village family.

Here’s our first look at the half-fox, half-human child played by actress Kim Yoo-jung in the upcoming sageuk horror-thriller Gumiho: Tale of the Fox’s Child. Above she is in her “normal” human guise, but the character comes into her mythical gumiho powers at the age of 10, which necessitates a physical transformation as well. The closer the character comes to turning 10, the more gumiho traits she starts to show, which increases the chances of her being discovered by her human neighbors.

Alas, the girl doesn’t know of her heritage, and neither does she realize that her mother (played by Han Eun-jung) is a gumiho, which makes her transformation all the more shocking for her.

Here’s our first look at leading lady Han Eun-jung in character for KBS’s upcoming Gumiho: Tale of the Fox’s Child, the period thriller series in which she plays a mythical shape-shifting fox.

Han expressed her excitement for the role, saying, “It’s a real honor to be playing such a good character, and I’ll work hard to show you a much better version of the gumiho than has been seen in previous dramas.” The gumiho is a classic character/creature out of Korean folklore and has therefore been often explored onscreen; previous actresses who have played gumiho characters include Go So-young, Song Yoon-ah, Kim Ji-young, and Park Sang-ah. The challenge for the drama, then, will be in bringing something new and/or interesting to the genre.

Han plays the gumiho mother to a half-human girl, who leaves her abusive husband after he breaks a promise and causes her to be unable to turn into a human. The series is described as a suspenseful melodrama that unfolds around her revenge. Her daughter will be played by familiar child actress Kim Yoo-jung (Dong Yi), while Seo Shin-ae (High Kick Through the Roof) will play a human girl of the same age. Gumiho: Tale of the Fox’s Child will be a Monday-Tuesday drama that kicks off next month, following My Country Calls.

The drama initially called Gumiho’s Revenge has been renamed Gumiho: Tale of the Fox’s Child [구미호: 여우누이뎐]. With the Hong sisters putting out their own series this year (My Girlfriend Is A Gumiho), there were initial questions of similarities between the two dramas, but I don’t think that will be a concern, as Gumiho: Tale of the Fox’s Child will be a suspenseful sageuk series. And now that the details of the story are out, I have to say it sounds pretty intriguing (though a lot rests on the direction and execution).

This title is actually closer to the original name under which the script won a prize in a KBS script competition last year, which literally means “Fox Sister” but in this particular case means “Fox’s Child,” according to a source with KBS. The change was made to preserve the feel of the original work, and the child in question is the half-human girl born to the gumiho (a shape-shifting fox with nine tails that takes human form) played by Han Eun-jung.

It’ll be the summer of the gumiho, with two dramas featuring the mythical creature in the works. In addition to the Hong sisters’ My Girlfriend Is A Gumiho on SBS, KBS is also launching their own drama, Gumiho’s Revenge, which will star Han Eun-jung (Cinderella Man, The Divine Weapon).

Gumiho’s Revenge, like My Country Calls, also won an award in last year’s KBS script competition under the title Fox Sister. In the story, the gumiho leaves her husband and has a young daughter who has inherited her mother’s ability to shape-shift (gumiho lore includes their abilities to transform themselves to look human). She decides to take revenge against a human, whom I’m presuming to be the husband (but which isn’t specified yet). The drama will be written by Oh Sun-hyung (Don’t Hesitate) and Jung Hye-won, and directed by PD Lee Gun-joon (Golden Apple, Loveholic).

That’s the extent of the plot info available at the moment, but it appears it will take a different tone (presumably more serious) than the lighter one in My Girlfriend Is A Gumiho — which, I might note, is assumed to be a comedy because it’s coming from the Hong sisters but has not actually been described as one. (It has been called a “fantasy-melo” — the melo doesn’t have to mean a tragic type of melodrama, but refers to a dramatic sort of plot.) Still, it wouldn’t be a Hong sisters drama without a strong comedic angle, so I don’t think it’s too much to expect. I wonder if Gumiho’s Revenge will be given the traditional gumiho treatment (as in, folkloric horror), as we saw in Hometown of Legends.

Gumiho’s Revenge will air on Mondays and Tuesdays after the currently running My Country Calls, premiering in early July.

On October 8, the 14th Pusan International Film Festival, or PIFF, opened in Busan. (Yes, the city takes a different official spelling than the film festival. Blame inconsistent Romanization.)

As the largest film festival in Korea, it drew a large list of attendees, as you can see from the long list of red-carpet walkers. It was definitely a star-studded opening night, and even included one familiar Hollywood face (Josh Hartnett).

This year’s PIFF features its largest lineup to date, screening 355 films from 70 countries, and closes on the 16th.
