Go Soo and Han Hyo-joo sign on to melodrama

Get your hankies out, folks: Go Soo and Han Hyo-joo are about to wring some tears and break your hearts in a new romantic melo film, titled Bandage.

Go Soo plays a firefighter who’s lost his wife and closed his heart to love… until he meets Han Hyo-joo, a doctor, and the two help each other heal their respective pains.

It’s a simple story, but these are two actors who are pretty much made for heart-tugging, romantic melodramas. He’s got the expressive eyes (think Will It Snow For Christmas), she’s got the gentle wounded spirit (Only You). Basically, you’re gonna cry and you’re gonna like it.

The movie comes from director Jung Ki-hoon, who drew praise with his last film, the heartwarming Aeja. Bandage plans to begin filming this year after Han wraps the other movie she recently joined, I Am the Joseon King.

The 16th Busan International Film Festival opened on October 6, and the red carpet to the opening screening — So Ji-sub and Han Hyo-joo’s tragic romance Only You — was awash with stars.

(For those of you used to seeing the festival called PIFF, it recently changed its spelling. The festival is in its 16th year and began back when the city was spelled Pusan. The spelling of the southern city officially changed to Busan in 2000, but the festival kept its former spelling, which naturally led to some confusion. Yeah, the Korean romanization system changes hasn’t been the most easy to follow.)

It’s been a while since we’ve had a big, star-packed red carpet, but this reminds me that we’re heading into awards season, and will soon be seeing lots of events like this. Which means, lots and lots of red carpets to ooh over, or, as the case may be, snark.

There were some questionable outfits (always fun), but overall I really like what I saw, even if there was an overwhelming trend toward leg slits Up To There and a good amount of side-boob. But the colors! Yay for colors!

So Ji-sub and Han Hyo-joo’s sad romance in Only You

Posters and stills are out for Only You, the movie starring So Ji-sub and Han Hyo-joo in a “beautiful but sad” love story, which appears to be So’s specialty. (See also: I’m Sorry, I Love You, What Happened In Bali, and Road No. 1. The man has tragic romance down to an art form.)

Han Hyo-joo plays Jung-hwa, a woman who has lost her sight in an accident but maintains a positive outlook. On the flipside is So Ji-sub as Chul-min, a former boxer with a dark past. Just once I’d like to see that dynamic flipped — nihilistic heroine paired with an optimistic hero. Just to mix things up a little, you know what I mean? Why does it always have to be the pure, sweet woman who turns around the man’s dark/cold/emotionally inaccessible worldview? I think the setup has long lost its punch, and the cliches need a little shakeup. Chungmuro, get on it!

Han Hyo-joo rumored to star opposite Jang Geun-seok

Ever since Jang Geun-seok was cast in the upcoming Yoon Suk-ho drama Love Rides the Rain / Love Rain, there’s been ruckus over leading ladies, and why shouldn’t there be? There’s probably a line out the door and into the next dimension. And yeah, I know, that picture of him isn’t his current hair. But listen, sometimes a girl just needs to dream.

The strongest contender is rumored to be Han Hyo-joo (Dong Yi, Brilliant Legacy), who also starred in PD Yoon’s last drama, Spring Waltz, which also happened to be her first drama. It would be a stellar lineup all three ways, and I’m sure PD Yoon is clamoring to score a leading lady like Han, who has since become a ratings maven and a melo queen in her own right.

That video takes forever to load, but trust me, it’s worth it.)

47th Baeksang Arts Awards

It’s too bad that Hyun Bin was missing from the 47th Baeksang Arts Awards, since he and his drama picked up a bunch of awards. (Alas, there’s that whole mandatory military thing.)

Not only did he grab a Daesang in the TV portion (film Daesang went to Lee Byung-heon for his thriller I Saw the Devil), both his projects won awards as well: Tang Wei for film Late Autumn, who’s pictured above with Ha Ji-won, his co-star in Secret Garden, which won top honors for the drama category. Looks like he’s on a roll, even in absentia. Do the Marines allow celebratory Baeksang parties for their celeb enlistees? Surely he earned a drink or two, at least.

The awards were held on the evening of May 26 in Seoul, and hosted by actors Ryu Shi-won (Style) and Kim Ah-joong (Sign).

Han Hyo-joo’s first solo fanmeeting

On-the-rise actress Han Hyo-joo held her very first solo fanmeeting over the weekend, which took place in Seoul and was called “2 Hours 22 Minutes with Han Hyo-joo.” As is the case with most of these dealios, the fanmeeting was meant to double as birthday party, though a late one: Han turned 24 (by Western reckoning) on February 22 — hence the event’s 2:22 motif — while the meeting was held on March 26.

The Dong Yi star acted as her own MC and DJ, manning the radio booth to play music for her attendees, who made up a relatively small crowd of 250. Han’s was sent congratulatory messages by some of her previous co-stars, which included Brilliant Legacy’s Lee Seung-gi, Bae Soo-bin, and Moon Chae-won, as well as Dong Yi’s Ji Jin-hee, Lee So-yeon, and Park Ha-sun. One co-star who made it out in person as a special guest was Lee Kwang-soo, who acted with her in Dong Yi (and will soon be seen in City Hunter).

Han Hyo-joo and So Ji-sub as tragic lovers

Is there any other kind? Well not if you cast Fountain of Tears Han Hyo-joo (Dong Yi, Brilliant Legacy) opposite if-brooding-were-a-sport Gold Medalist So Ji-sub (Road No. 1, Cain and Abel). Just…let’s not stage it in the Korean War, shall we? I’m having an allergic reaction just remembering the cosmic joke that was Road No. 1. **shudder, shudder, shake**

They’ll be starring together in the film Only You, where So Ji-sub will play a former boxer, and Han Hyo-joo his love interest, who is slowly losing her eyesight. Oh, the tragedy. It will be served in bucket-loads. And don’t ask me about Korean melodrama’s obsession with blindness. I know not from whence this obsession springs.

2010 MBC Drama Awards

It’s time for each broadcast station to put on their end-of-year awards. The MBC Drama Awards are first of the bunch, and man, Kim Nam-joo must be peeved. She finally gets her Daesang — and it goes shared, with Han Hyo-joo. Yeesh. This is almost as bad as when MBC split the Daesang between Kim Myung-min and Mr. Hand Towel.

First off, let me say that I did watch several episodes of Dong Yi and found Han Hyo-joo better than expected — not bad at all. Thing is, she wasn’t what I’d call great, either. Powerful enough to win the Grand Prize of the year? Not so much — certainly not over Shin Eun-kyung, who had to settle for a Top Excellence award.

Han Hyo-joo sings at GMF

Actress Han Hyo-joo (Brilliant Legacy, Dong Yi) will be performing live at the Grand Mint Festival this year, singing a new song entitled “Don’t You Know,” by pop duo No Reply.

Although busy with her MBC drama Dong Yi, she recorded the single with No Reply and took time out of her schedule to rehearse and take place in the poster shoot for GMF 2010.
