So: Moon Chae-won is out, and Han Ji-min is in for Yoochun‘s new fantasy-sageuk-contemporary fusion drama Rooftop Prince.

Interesting choice, but one I can get behind; I can see Han Ji-min easily fitting into a fusion sageuk romance (see: Capital Scandal). She can be perky and adorable, though she’s not strictly confined to bubbly roles (her current turn in Padam Padam is proof enough of that). She’s also done sageuk before (Yi San) as well as contemporary fare, so all around, I’m pleased with the casting. Moon Chae-won would’ve been great, sure, but I understand her wanting to get away from yet more sageuk princess imagery after two huge sageuk hits, back to back (The Princess’s Man, Bow: The Ultimate Weapon).

And while Han Ji-min is four years older than Yoochun, (1) I think we’re just going to have to get used to the noona-romance as a fixture in dramaland, and (2) she’s also tiny, which somehow makes the age gap less of an issue in my head. I don’t know why. It must be the mental image of him towering over her, which mitigates the age-gap power-balance. (Contrast that with Lee Da-hae in Miss Ripley, for instance, who was eye to eye with Yoochun and I thought resembled his big sister more than innocent (seeming) love interest. But they also didn’t quite spark in the chemistry department, which is an altogether different issue.)

Plot refresher: Yoochun is a Joseon-era crown prince whose beloved princess dies. He catapults himself (and a crew of vassals) to the 21st century, where he meets his beloved’s doppelganger. Craziness ensues, in a story that traverses past and present. I am SO all over this premise.

Rooftop Prince premieres on March 14, following SBS’s current Wednesday-Thursday drama Please Take Care of Us, Captain.

We’re past the halfway mark for cable drama Padam Padam… The Sound of His and Her Heartbeats, which means there’s no time like the present to check in. Shot with an intimate, art house sort of vibe and lacking an episodic format, it’s a drama that ends up feeling and looking the most like a long movie. (That’s not a criticism, as that kind of style and atmosphere work really well here.) It was only recently that I saw that the director’s previous credits include A Love to Kill – which, despite being a mixed bag, had some impressive cinematography. Luckily though, this show has that great drama trifecta of writing, acting, and directing going for it – because when you’re trying to juggle an engaging character drama with fantasy elements, it’s all in the execution.

Padam Padam… The Sound of His and Her Heartbeats got off to a strong cable ratings start of 1.6%, and I can definitely say those ratings are well deserved. Strong directing, editing, deft camerawork and nuanced characterization make this show something more than your usual melodrama. I personally loved that this drama isn’t afraid to be daring, with an in-your-face gritty realism that ends up being the perfect setting for the supernatural elements that come into play. Also, there’s bromance. Lots of bromance.

If this year is just the start of all the goodness that cable is going to offer us, then us viewers are in for a real treat.

When they described Kim Bum’s character from Padam Padam as being the “guardian angel” who watches over the blossoming love between Jung Woo-sung and Han Ji-min, I didn’t think they were going to make it a literal guardian angel… or that their idea of guardian angel would be closer to fairy princess. Aw, it’s a man-date (not to be confused with mandate) for Jung Woo-sung and Kim Bum, who play prison buddies in the upcoming cable drama Padam Padam: The Sound of His and Her Heartbeats. How adorable is the hand-holding?

There’s a new tagline attached to the drama, which has me wary: “When he wants to die, he lives. When he wants to live, he can’t stop death.” Uh… nobody told me it was going to be that kind of drama! On the other hand, it’s also about a “miraculous story of love and heart,” so maybe he figures out a way to cheat death. (...)

Yet more stills are out from Padam Padam: The Sound of His and Her Heartbeats, the upcoming cable drama starring Jung Woo-sung, who is the focus of this batch of images.

Jung plays Kang-chil, a man wrongly accused of murder who serves 16 years in prison, whose innocent nature is protected in part by his younger buddy and “guardian angel” Kook-soo (Kim Bum). Kang-chil at one point experiences a near-death experience, surviving thanks to a miracle. He falls in a “fateful love” with a woman described primarily as “selfish,” played by Han Ji-min. Due to his past, he’s awkward in the romance arena and turns shy around her, bringing out his innocent, cute nature, while also contrasting with his tough side. Lots and lots of new stills are trickling out from the production of Padam Padam…The Sound of His and Her Heartbeats, aka the cable drama from lauded writer Noh Hee-kyung and featuring a high-profile main cast. I know Padam Padam is all about Jung Woo-sung (Athena) and Han Ji-min (Cain & Abel)…but can we talk about how much Kim Bum has grown up the the past year? Yowsa.

I know all boys have to age sometime, and Kim Bum has been gradually growing out of his boyish looks with every role he takes, but still…I feel like he’s turned into an adult overnight, and it’s both amazing (those cheekbones! those eyes!) and sad (bye-bye, pinchy-cheeks).

Almost as adorable as his date with Kim Bum. Almost. I have a feeling that if I watch this drama, it’s going to be for the bromance more than the romance.

What the? Okay, I’m officially confused and excited. Kim Bum (The Woman Who Still Wants to Marry, Boys Over Flowers) and Han Ji-min (Cain and Abel, Yi San) have joined the cast of the new Noh Hee-kyung drama, Padam Padam… The Sound of His and Her Heartbeats.

But… KIM BUM? In a Noh Hee-kyung drama, known for wordy, witty dialogue? Listen, I love cutie pie noona killer more than the average bear. Really. But this casting is a little confusing, to say the least. It makes me super curious about the story, for one thing. Especially since he’s going to play friend to leading man Jung Woo-sung, who is going to make him look twelve. Scratch that. Twelve-er.
