Sunwoo Sun is one of the unknown faces catapulted to mainstream popularity after her role in this year’s Queen of Housewives. (She played the unhappy wife of another of its breakouts, Yoon Sang-hyun.) She has announced her follow-up role in the SBS drama Will It Snow On Christmas? [크리스마스에 눈이 올까요, a working title], meaning she’ll be forming a love triangle with Go Soo in his television comeback role as well as Han Ye-seul.

The role doesn’t seem to take her very far from her Queen of Housewives character; once again, she’s playing a chaebol, who is the daughter of the CEO of a large-scale corporation. She’s haughty and lives by her own rules, seemingly cold on the exterior but capable of showing passion in the face of love. She has a contentious relationship with Go Soo’s character, with whom she butts heads in everything. Han Ye-seul rounds out the trio as Go Soo’s childhood love.

Will It Snow On Christmas? will take up the Wednesday-Thursday slot currently filled by SBS’s outrageously addictive You’re Beautiful. I admit it doesn’t sound too exciting from the quick summary, but don’t count it out just yet; it comes to us from PD Choi Mun-seok of What Happened in Bali and writer Lee Kyung-hee of I’m Sorry, I Love You.

On October 8, the 14th Pusan International Film Festival, or PIFF, opened in Busan. (Yes, the city takes a different official spelling than the film festival. Blame inconsistent Romanization.)

As the largest film festival in Korea, it drew a large list of attendees, as you can see from the long list of red-carpet walkers. It was definitely a star-studded opening night, and even included one familiar Hollywood face (Josh Hartnett).

This year’s PIFF features its largest lineup to date, screening 355 films from 70 countries, and closes on the 16th.

I’ve been waiting ages for Go Soo’s official acting comeback after his army release, and not only are we getting a film (the dark thriller Into the White Night with Sohn Ye-jin), he has also decided on a drama return — his first in four years. It’ll come in the SBS series Will It Snow On Christmas? [크리스마스에 눈이 올까요], and co-stars Han Ye-seul.

I’m not thrilled about Han Ye-seul, because she’s had pretty uneven performances in her career and has been coasting on being a CF queen, but I’m going to go into this with an open mind. (To give credit where it’s due, I thought she was pitch-perfect in Fantasy Couple.) And this comes from the director of What Happened in Bali (dark) and the writer of Thank You (heartwarming) and I’m Sorry, I Love You (intense) — Choi Mun-seok and Lee Kyung-hee, respectively — so that is promising stuff.

In the drama, Go Soo plays a man who was brought up by his grandmother in difficult circumstances and shows an “intelligent, masculine appeal.” His character had shared a young love with the girl played by Han Ye-seul, but through “sad circumstances,” they were forced to separate. She is the daughter of a famed doctor of Oriental medicine in a small village, although she’s always being compared to and passed over for her smarter, brighter older brother. She and Go Soo eventually reunite in their fateful love as adults. (The setup sounds trite and unexciting, but given the writing-directing duo, I’m staying optimistic.)

No airdate planned yet, but I’ll be keeping an eye on Will It Snow on Christmas, for sure.

Hip-hop duo Mighty Mouth has scored another high-profile collaboration, this time with actress Han Ye-seul (Miss Gold Digger, Tazza). For their relatively new status in the kpop field, the group has already drawn notice for featuring name singers like Yoon Eun-hye, Sun Ye of the Wonder Girls, and Sohn Dam-bi.

Han Ye-seul hasn’t pursued a career as a singer, but she has recorded a few songs for soundtracks, such as the track below from one of her earliest roles, college sitcom Nonstop 4. (I thought she was pretty awful in the show — she’s improved a lot since — but she enjoyed some popularity for her onscreen love triangle between Hyun Bin and Shinhwa’s Andy.) Listen to the track (and watch the clip) below.

SONG OF THE DAY

Han Ye-seul – “그댄 달라요” (You are different) from the soundtrack of Nonstop 4. Like with many actresses who sing, her voice is pretty but a little weak. [ Download ]

The article practically reads like ad copy (seriously, do these reporters just regurgitate press releases or what?), but the gist is that the commercial was recently filmed at the Yangpeyong English Village (which, you may recall, is the setting for some of the Shinhwa High School scenes from Boys Before Flowers). It features the two actors embracing affectionately and ends with a kiss (albeit only one on the forehead).

Ah, so she IS thinking Hollywood!

Bilingual (and Cerritos, California-raised) Han Ye-seul has revealed her desire to cross over to the U.S. film industry, in a recent press conference given at Seoul’s Silla Hotel on the 26th.

Han said, “I’ve already auditioned for a Hollywood project, and I’m waiting to hear the results.” According to her Sidus HQ rep, she’d begun receiving calls of interest from Hollywood production companies about two months ago, and sent over tapes and video as audition material.

She continued, “If the opportunity comes up, I want to give it a try. I don’t think failing at that is something to be ashamed of. Even if I don’t pass the audition round, I won’t feel disappointed and I’ll accept that readily.”

Han’s most recent project was dubbing the lead role in the Korean version of the animated film Monsters vs. Aliens, for which she has been doing promotional work recently. Dreamworks’ Jeffrey Katzenberg said of Han Ye-seul (and this is translated from the Korean translation of the original English, so apologies for discrepancies): “Han Ye-seul has a beautiful voice and suited the role perfectly. Meeting her in person, her face was as beautiful as her voice. She also has a great sense of humor.” Kiefer Sutherland called her “a gorgeous woman.”

Han Ye-seul’s last drama role was the gambling-action series Tazza, which ended its run last November. She plans to pick her next project soon — at the forefront of possible roles are two dramas and one movie. She says of her busy schedule, “When I was young, I wanted to rest after doing each project, but now I’ve developed pride in working and I don’t want to rest. I want to keep working.”

Han Ye-seul (Tazza, Miss Gold Digger) is lending her voice for the Korean dub of the upcoming Dreamworks animated film, Monsters vs. Aliens in 3D.

She completed the dubbing for the main character Ginormica (voiced originally by Reese Witherspoon) in early March. In the movie, the story kicks off with her character being hit by a meteor on her way to a wedding, which causes her to grow to a height of 15 meters; she is subsequently deemed a monster.

(This also explains the buzz a few days ago that Han was hobnobbing with Dreamworks CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg; the reports seemed overhyped then, and they probably are. Which means: No, she’s probably not planning her crossover just yet. Then again, with all the Hallyu stars trying to make the jump to Hollywood, we can’t rule her out, either. Han may be a limited actor, but she IS one a very small number of Korean actresses who can speak English fluently, and without accent.)

The film has a March 27 U.S. premiere, while it will open in theaters in Korea on April 23.
