The Year in Review, Part 4: The Rest of 2007

Yes, my last post was “The Best of 2007,” but rather than put up a Worst list, I’m lumping them all together with The Rest. Not all the dramas I’m mentioning here are bad; they’re just dramas I watched that didn’t belong in the Best list.

You mean they don’t do it just to confuse us?

“The Surprising Reason Behind Drama Title Changes”

The upcoming, vastly expensive SBS Wednesday-Thursday drama Lobbyist, starring Song Il Kook [Jumong] and Jang Jin Young, has confused many viewers — because until recently, it was widely referred to as Angel.

After deliberating over the two titles, deciding between the potentially overly feminine “Angel” and the overly masculine “Lobbyist,” the production company eventually chose to go with “Lobbyist.” However, not knowing this, many viewers came to use both titles.

Thus working titles are employed before dramas are introduced to the viewing public. Although many times the working titles do become the broadcast titles, there are also many instances when that is not the case. Some strange circumstances may intervene to require a first title to be discarded.

A Bit of Trivia: Hello! Miss

SONG OF THE DAY

Someone asked in a comment what the ending song for each episode of Hello! Miss was, and I’m nothing if not accommodating:

Crying Nut - “Funky Dance” — also happens to be the song to the opening credits, which you can watch after the cut. [ zShare download ]

Fansubbing the Korean Language

fansubbing-the-korean-language

Now that With S2 has just released the rest of Dal Ja’s Spring to finish our 30th project (30 kdramas! In just over a year!), I had a few thoughts on fansubbing as a whole… The more I fansub and translate, the more I’ve gotten comfortable recognizing wordplay in Korean, which I always get a little kick out of. I like wordplay of all sorts, and I think people enjoy understanding them, because it gives you a deeper appreciation into the language of a drama, for instance, rather than merely the plot. I’ve also seen a couple of comments noting interest in some of my Korean language explanations, which made me realize if I get a kick out of little details, other people probably would too.

Random Song Comparison: DAL JA, AEGISSHI

.
I was listening to the newly released OST for the new show Hello! Miss, which is cute and lively to match the cute and lively show itself. I’m a big fan of music (could you tell?) and drama soundtracks, because I think the songs used in a show do a tremendous job of establishing the atmosphere and reinforcing emotion. Sometimes music is overused or badly applied; but when it’s used well (see: Soulmate, Que Sera Sera), it enhances the experience significantly.

SONG OF THE DAY

KT Tunstall - “Black Horse and the Cherry Tree”
This was played in Hello! Miss’s Episode 3, briefly. KT Tunstall must be gaining popularity in Korea; Sunday’s episode of Que Sera Sera also included another of her songs, “Suddenly I See.” (Or is she more popular than I think? I always find it weird when someone you know about when they aren’t famous suddenly becomes famous.) This song plays briefly in the scene when Su Ha and Jung Sook start their first day of work. Week Round-up: “Hello! Miss” et al…

Since last week was the week of many finales, that makes this week the (very busy) week of many premieres. Help me, I’m drowning in dramas! This week alone, we have the premieres of: Que Sera Sera, Hello! Miss, Witch Amusement, Thank You, Devil (Mawang), H.I.T… Seriously, I don’t know where I’ll get the time. I’ll make the time somehow. Maybe most of the shows will suck so I don’t have to feel bad about dropping them.

There was no new episode of Que Sera Sera today (boo for televised sporting events!), but I do have ONE related goody for you (much thanks to yeohweping and ay_link!):

(Theme) SONG OF THE DAY

W & Whale - “Moonlight” (”월광,” weol gwang): Main theme song to Que Sera Sera. Can’t you just picture Eric strutting down the street to this song? He’s not at all my type, but I can’t deny he IS one sexy man. [ zShare download ]
