Well, the official cast has been announced for the third season of the hit family sitcom series High Kick, which had big successes with 2006′s Unstoppable High Kick, and then 2009′s High Kick Through the Roof.

My interest has waned in the series since the controversial ending to the second installment, but I have to give them some credit for coming up with a pretty amusing third title (still a working one): Counterattack of the Short Legs. HA. But the cast list doesn’t really excite me, and if anything is surprising for being so heavy on the pop stars and musicians. Is there a music slant this season, or is it just coincidence?

The full cast list, in order of their pictures in the chart below:

It was only a matter of time: With two hit High Kick shows under its belt, production company Chorokbaem Media has decided upon the basic outline for a third series, which for now is just known as High Kick 3.

Already anticipation is pretty high: High Kick 3 boasts a much, much larger budget than either of the others. Season 3 gets 8.7 billion won, which is 2.75 times that of the second season’s 3.16 billion won. Big time money for big time expectations. It’ll also be a wee bit shorter than the other two, and is scheduled for 120 episodes. (Season 1 was 167 episodes, while Season 2 had 126.)

After the success of 2006′s Unstoppable High Kick and 2010′s High Kick Through the Roof, director Kim Byung-wook has signed on with Chorokbaem Media, producers of the first two series, to produce a third season.

Both sitcoms were 30-minute daily shows that aired more than 100 episodes and launched the careers of quite a number of young stars: Jung Il-woo, Kim Bum, Kim Hye-sung, Park Min-young, Yoon Shi-yoon, Shin Se-kyung, Hwang Jung-eum, and Daniel Choi, to name some. (Some of those actors had previous credits, but it was their High Kick experience that really put them in the mainstream public consciousness.)

Despite being called a third “season,” don’t expect a return of the same characters or storylines. The two existing seasons come from the same PD and share the same grumpy grandpa (Lee Soon-jae), but feature entirely different characters. Consider it similar to the Nonstop series, just set around a large family rather than a university campus.

Season 3 will also bring onboard a fresh cast, although you can expect a similar mix of light-hearted family scenarios with a bit of melodrama at some points. (Korean sitcoms aren’t really that comedic in the way we think of sitcoms in the States, but the format employs a light touch and loose plotting.)

The next season will air sometime in 2011. I wonder what kind of kicky (har) title it’ll get…

There have been complaints about the rather dramatic way the series went out last week, and the producers PD has spoken up to explain, if not defend, their choice. To put it mildly, their ending was a pretty unconventional way to wrap up a family sitcom that has enjoyed pretty high popularity for the entirety of its 126-episode run, and a lot of fans were not happy with it.

KBS is on a hot streak — not only does it have several strong hit dramas currently on the air, it dominates every night of the week. KBS actually has more series bringing in 30% ratings than it does in the 20% range. At the head of the pack is the weekend family drama Three Brothers, which broke 40% with a 41.7% rating for its January 31 broadcast.

To put things into perspective, looking at the last week’s Top 20 overall ratings, KBS occupies the top four slots. The Top 20 includes non-drama offerings (variety shows and news, for instance), so if you consider only the drama and sitcom programming on the list, KBS has half of them.

Another Unstoppable High Kick alum is making a reappearance on its spinoff sitcom, High Kick Through the Roof. In the original series, Koyote singer Shinji was one of the adults in the middle generation who played an aspiring singer and ex-wife to Choi Min-yong; she will appear on High Kick Through the Roof alongside Danny Ahn in its 81st episode.

Shinji and Danny Ahn will act together as a couple; he plays a doctor and friend to Ji-hoon (Daniel Choi), while she is a university sunbae of (Hwang) Jung-eum, who has returned from studying abroad in Russia. It’s particularly interesting that her role is actually a crossover with her Unstoppable High Kick character, who was also named Shinji. In contrast, in the other cameos with Unstoppable stars (with Kim Hye-sung, Jung Il-woo, and Kim Bum), the returning actors played new roles.

In the episode, Shinji and Danny Ahn are featured in a talent show scene where they dance to a Koyote song (“Nonsense”). A source with production company Chorokbaem Media explained that although the two were not particularly close during their days as pop stars, having that shared background helped them bond and film comfortably.

High Kick Through the Roof continues to perform strongly with ratings in the 20%-25% range.

Interesting! Kim Bum has been confirmed for MBC’s upcoming The Woman Who Still Wants To Marry, which stars Eom Ji-won and is a sequel to 2004′s The Woman Who Wants To Marry. He’s currently busy with initial character work, as he’ll be playing the younger boyfriend to Park Jin-hee (War of Money) — their characters have a 12-year age gap.

The main story centers around three thirtysomething women (Wang Bit-na rounds out the trio along with Eom Ji-won are Park Jin-hee) who are getting fresh new starts in different ways. Wang, for instance, breaks things off with her fiancé, while Park Jin-hee starts a romance with a much younger man (Kim Bum). I wonder if he’ll be a contender for a serious relationship or more of a boy toy. Either way, it’s a great way to stir younger viewer interest while also satisfying the drama’s target base, since Kim Bum has serious noona appeal.

Before that show broadcasts in 2010, though, he’ll also be making a cameo appearance in family sitcom High Kick Through the Roof, which is the spin-off series of the show that made him a star, Unstoppable High Kick. He will be the next actor from the old cast to reappear in the new show, after Kim Hye-sung showed up in Episode 1 and Jung Il-woo in Episode 35. He’ll be featured in Episode 72 as the university student nephew to Kim Ja-ok; he stays at her house and makes an impression on Hwang Jung-eum‘s character.

Kim Bum finished filming his part on the evening of December 11. His good buddy Jung Il-woo came to cheer him on, although they didn’t appear together (and when Jung filmed his own cameo, Kim Bum was there). Kim said, “I’m extremely happy to be filming with director Kim Byung-wook again. Most of the staff members are the same from Unstoppable High Kick so it felt comfortable and fun, like coming home.”

His former Unstoppable High Kick castmates Kim Hye-sung and Jung Il-woo have already done it (Kim in the first episode and Jung more recently in the episode that aired on October 28), so now it’s Kim Bum‘s turn to make a cameo appearance on that sitcom’s pseudo-sequel, High Kick Through the Roof.

Originally, Kim Bum was set to appear with Jung Il-woo but explained, “The director felt it would be a waste for us to come out at once. So when Il-woo hyung went to shoot, I went along and just watched. I’ll be filming soon. I think I’ll find out the concrete details of the shoot on that day. I’m already looking forward to it.”

In the original series, Kim Bum played an innocent, goofy high school student who was best friends with Kim Hye-sung (the two boys were unabashed with their best-friend love for each other, to the annoyance of Kim’s cooler, rebellious younger brother Jung Il-woo). For that reason, Kim Bum started out hating Kim Hye-sung’s girlfriend (played as a ditz by Park Min-young), and complications arose when he started developing feelings for her, too. According to earlier reports, Park is also planning to make a cameo, and if it happens, she’ll probably be next.

From what I’ve seen (and I want to see more), High Kick Through the Roof is cute and entertaining — if only it weren’t so long! It has been doing well in the ratings and raising the profiles of its young leads, namely Shin Se-kyung, Hwang Jung-eum, Seo Shin-ae, and Yoon Shi-yoon. With the numbers creeping up into the high teens, the latest episode drew a 19.7%, putting it within a hair of breaking the 20% mark.

Here are the stills for Jung Il-woo‘s (Return of Iljimae) upcoming cameo appearance on the family sitcom High Kick Through the Roof, where he’ll share a romantic storyline with one of its regular cast members, played by singer-actress Hwang Jung-eum. In it, she loses her beloved puppy due to the carelessness of Ji-hoon (Daniel Choi‘s character), and searches far and wide to recover him. As a result, we learn that the dog used to belong to Il-woo, and because it misses his former owner, he had run away to Il-woo’s old house to find him.
