Hong Sisters back in 2012 with their eighth drama

Woot! No better news for the drama year to come. The Hong Sisters writing duo has announced that they’ll be back in 2012 with a new drama for KBS. Nothing else has been decided; just that they’re going to do a drama. But that’s pretty much enough to get the anticipation dial set to 10. The genre, the story, the stars… it’s anyone’s guess. Will it be another inside look at showbiz like Best Love or You’re Beautiful? Or a journey into fantasy like Hong Gil Dong or Gumiho?

Fabulous Hong sisters sit down for an interview

They had me at pig rabbit…or wait…was it the rabbit pig? The hybrid lovechild doll born out of Tae Kyung (Jang Geun-Seok) and Mi-Nam’s (Park Shin-Hye) puppy love in the hit drama You’re Beautiful had me looking at the Hong Sisters in a fresh new light.

It was just this past winter when I was first introduced to their sweet and often zany sense of humor while watching My Girl, starring Lee Dong-Wook and Lee Da-hae, while laid up in bed with a cold for 3 days. Although I thought the rom-com to be cute, sassy and funny, it wasn’t until You’re Beautiful and My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho that I was hooked…line and sinker. I mean come on, how could one not be hooked after Shin Mina’s first outburst of Woong-ahh~!

With the recent completion of their latest MBC hit drama, Best Love, it seems as though the sisters have done it again. The adorable paring of Dokko Jin and Dding-dong will forever remain on my list as one of the best couples Hong sisters have ever created. Even with Best Love now over, the viewers are still riding the aftermath of the “Dokko wave” and don’t seem to want to let go of the drama. The ever-busy Hong sisters sat down for an interview to speak about their latest mega hit, and what other projects they may up their sleeve for the future to keep feeding our addiction for the dramas we just can’t seem to get enough of…so let’s get started!

Lee Seung-gi to cameo on Best Love

Puppyyyyyyyyyyyyyy! With a… puppy? Seriously, who decided that this should be a picture? Because it’s kind of my new favorite thing. In the Universe.

The story? Oh yeah. Lee Seung-gi is set to cameo on Best Love Episode 9, following the long line of Hong Sisters drama stars to show their support by popping up in their later works. Seung-gi was not only the star of their last drama, My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho, but was also rumored to possibly star in Best Love himself, before the script skewed the hero older. And despite my love for Seung-gi, I would cry if I never got to see Cha Seung-won’s current incarnation of Dokko Jin, who makes crazy seem normal and sane seem boring.

The only disappointing part is that Seung-gi will be playing himself, only because I’m a fan of the Hong Sisters dramaverses being intertwined. They’re not always consistent with it, but Park Shin-hye and Lee Hong-ki cameo’d in Gumiho as their You’re Beautiful characters, which was fun. And Woong-ah is a stuntman/action star, so why not have him play Dokko Jin’s stuntman on Fighter, brought out to prove to Ae-jung that he really is all weak and frail, like he insisted?

Oh well. I’m sure they’ll do something fun with Seung-gi as himself. I just hope he DOES something other than stand there, because Park Shi-yeon’s cameo was wasted. Don’t waste my puppy!

Episode 9 airs Wednesday, June 1.

Best Love: Hong Sisters’ meta lens on k-variety

The latest stills for upcoming romantic comedy Best Love show lead actress Gong Hyo-jin taking part in the popular quiz variety show, World Changing Quiz, (known as 세바퀴, short for 세상을 바꾸는 퀴즈). This is the other half of the scene where she calls Cha Seung-won in the phone-a-friend portion of the show, where she has to feed him speed-quiz questions.

All of this is in fact promo for YET ANOTHER variety show, which is the basis of the drama’s main meta: fictional dating show Couple Making Season 3, where they throw celebrities into fake relationships for the cameras, a la MBC’s real variety program, We Got Married. The major difference is that this show mixes celebrities and non-celebrities, which is how Yoon Kye-sang‘s character ends up as a contestant on the show. The concept is a mat-seon program, essentially setting up people on blind dates for the purposes of finding a marriage partner. So it might actually be somewhat competition-based too, if the intention is to partner off by the end of the season, for instance, and not be left alone.

More additions to upcoming Hong sisters drama

The Hong sisters drama formerly titled Discovery of Affection has a title change, and is now called Best Love. Meh. Neither title is very good — they sound so generic, and lack the wit and humor of the Hong sisters’ style — but who knows, maybe the change was prompted by those pesky plagiarism accusations that also may have led to character changes when their hero went from a young Lee Seung-gi type to the older, badder Cha Seung-won.

(By the way, the old title is — in true Hong sisters fashion — a pun involving a character name. Just like You’re Beautiful included a pun on the name “Mi-nam,” Discovery of Affection included one on the heroine’s name, Gu Ae-jung, where ae-jung means affection. Oh, Hong sisters. You never met a pun (the cornier the better!) you didn’t love. And then beat into the ground. And I say that with ae-jung.)

The drama has also cast its second leads, and they are two actors who’ve done well with comic material in the past: Yoon Kye-sang and Yoo Inna.

Hong Sisters drama hit with accusations of plagiarism

It looks like upcoming Hong Sisters drama The Discovery of Affection is coming up against many a roadblock on its way to the small screen. It’s been hit with accusations of plagiarism, based on the synopsis for the drama’s storyline, and now a few things are coming into focus: speculation is that original leading man Lee Seung-gi dropped the series due to these complications, and that the scenario was re-written to skew older, thus paving the way for new leading man Cha Seung-won.

While none of the casting has actually been finalized (Gong Hyo-jin is still the top contender for leading lady) this does explain the one thing that had me confused: not why one actor was chosen over another, but why they were so DIFFERENT. The thing that originally had me baffled (okay, after the wailing and gnashing of teeth) was the fact that if you were going to cast Lee Seung-gi for a role, you wouldn’t follow up that SAME character with…Cha Seung-won. That’s crazy. So now it finally makes sense in my head, why the changes took place. (Because that’s what’s important, natch.)

Lee Seung-gi won’t reteam with Hong sisters after all

Hm, so apparently Lee Seung-gi won’t be the new lead of the Hong sisters writing team’s new drama Discovery of Affection, which has also teased a possible Gong Hyo-jin casting.

The synopsis for the project has reportedly been entirely rewritten, and with that goes Lee Seung-gi’s potential return as their leading man; he’d anchored last year’s adorable fantasy comedy, My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho. All that’s been given to describe the project is that it’s about the romance between a top actor and a has-been actress.

I know this news may come as a disappointment to a certain co-blogger, but to be honest I’m perfectly happy with it. One of the things I appreciate about the Hongs is their willingness — preference, even — to go with new lead actors every time, many of them on the lesser side of famous. (They tend to do the opposite with their favorite secondary actors, bringing some back for drama after drama. Choi Ran has appeared in four of six, Ahn Seok-hwan in three.) The exception to this is Jang Geun-seok, but that’s because he moved up from second lead in Hong Gil Dong to main man in You’re Beautiful.

In any case, as much as I enjoy Lee Seung-gi, I’m even more curious about the new direction this drama is taking, because apparently the new contender for the lead is…Cha Seung-won??

With the synopsis revision, the Hongs have aged up the hero a bit, taking him out of his twenties. According to one broadcast rep, Cha Seung-won has taken a solo meeting (without his manager) with producers to discuss the project, which was confirmed by his agency.

It takes quite a leap to go from a good-natured, grinning boy-next-door to a dark, tattooed badass. And I think I’m liking the possibility, if only because I’m dying to see the grizzled, tough Cha putting his funnybone to work as a Hong sisters hero. For one thing, they have a knack for stripping a man of his dignity, in the funniest possible ways. Jae Hee dressed up as Juliet’s nurse. Oh Ji-ho as a plumber. Kang Ji-hwan miming his way out of recognition. Jang Geun-seok in every scene of You’re Beautiful.

I mean, it’s ridiculous and crazy, right? So crazy…it just might work?

Discovery of Affection will be directed by Queen Seon-deok’s Park Hong-kyun, and is MBC’s next Wednesday-Thursday drama, to replace the new series Royal Family.

Gong Hyo-jin in the next Hong Sisters drama?

OMG OMG OMG! Somebody pinch me. If this happens, I will TOTALLY be a good girl for ~~the rest of the year~~ the rest of the month! I swear! Seriously, if Lee Seung-gi and Gong Hyo-jin get cast in the next Hong Sisters drama together, I might faint from sheer joy. Is it possible to OD on happy?

Oh, right, so the story: Gong Hyo-jin is being named as the top contender for the starring role in the next Hong Sisters’ drama, The Discovery of Affection, about a has-been starlet’s romance with a younger actor who’s at the top of his career. Lee Seung-gi is slated to be the co-star, and though reports on the two actors are not final (nothing signed yet), the studio is reportedly calling it, and gearing up for a massive production. The PD will be Queen Seon-deok‘s Park Hong-kyun, and this will be the Hong Sisters’ seventh drama, slated to follow Royal Family on MBC this summer.

I love quirky, understated Gong Hyo-jin, and to top it off, she’s the star of one of my all-time favorite dramas, Biscuit Teacher Star Candy. Lee Seung-gi is in one of my OTHER all-time faves, My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho…which means that if they star in one drama TOGETHER, I might implode.

Now I’m scared to jinx it. I mean, for the love of all that is holy, you can’t dangle the possibility of these two starring together in a Hong Sisters drama, and then yank it out from under me, right? That would be TOO CRUEL.

Oh HELLS YEAH. I knew Santa was on my side. Singer, actor, MC, Puppy Extraordinaire™ Lee Seung-gi (My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho, Brilliant Legacy) is in talks for a possible re-team with the Hong Sisters writing duo Hong Jung-eun and Hong Mi-ran (My Girlfriend Is a Gumiho, You’re Beautiful) to star in their next drama. If this deal gets signed, I’m keeping Santa in whiskey till next Christmas.

The Hong Sisters’ seventh drama (in seven years) is called The Discovery of Affection [애정의 발견], about a romance between a has-been actress and a rising actor. So, noona romance set in Chungmuro? The setup isn’t original, but I’d put my money on them finding ways to spin parody gold out of it. I’m thinking the “discovery” in the title speaks to being discovered as an actor, and knowing the Hong Sisters’ penchant for title-name puns, how much you wanna bet the heroine’s name will be Eh-jung [애정=affection]?
