Tang Wei selected as Hyun Bin’s leading lady

Casting has been confirmed and Hyun Bin will in fact be acting alongside Lust, Caution actress Tang Wei in his new movie, the remaking of 1966’s classic Late Autumn (aka Manchu, 만추).

The plot features a three-day love story between a woman who is let out of prison on a special leave and a young man who is on the run from pursuers. The original, now lost, is considered one of the best of its lauded director Lee Man-hee’s prolific but short-lived career. It had been remade twice before (in 1975 as Promise of the Flesh and 1981 as Late Autumn) and even once in Japan as 1972’s Promise. (In fact, Promise of the Flesh was directed by the famous Kim Ki-young, who had previously made The Housemaid, which is regarded as one of Korea’s best films and is the source material for Jeon Do-yeon’s upcoming remake.)

Late Autumn/Manchu will be shot in the U.S. by Korean director Kim Tae-young, but both stars will be acting in English. CEO Lee Joo-ik of production company Boram Films said, “We’ve thought carefully about what we can do to make our film connect with the rest of the world, and it seems like just yesterday that we’d gone to the U.S. to location scout five years ago, but now that we’re really going to the States to begin filming, the feeling is remarkable.”

The film will begin shooting at the end of the month and release in 2010.

Hyun Bin has announced his next role, and like Jeon Do-yeon’s latest, it will be a remake of a 1960s film. This one is the 1966 classic Late Autumn (also called Manchu, 만추), by “genius director” Lee Man-hee. Currently, actress Tang Wei (Lust, Caution) is said to be considering the female lead role.

The remake is a co-production with an American production company and will be filmed entirely in the U.S. with English dialogue. (Eep! How good is Hyun Bin’s English?)

Hyun Bin’s tears are 100% all-natural

While promoting his drama The World They Live In in Yokohama on September 26, Hyun Bin mentioned the topic of crying scenes. He explained that he’d been advised early on that “Your tears should be produced of your own accord. I believe that means you have to become that immersed in the emotions. That’s why from the beginning of my acting career, I’ve never used eye drops to make tears.”

The statement caught my eye not because it’s remarkable for Hyun Bin to think that, but because it makes me super curious to know who HAS had to resort to eye drops. It’s a practice I’ve heard about jokingly but haven’t really heard actors refer to as a serious thing, so now I wonder how common it actually is. (Who else began mentally compiling a list of possibilities when they first read his comment? The first two faces that popped into my mind were Han Ga-in and Yoon-ah. Don’t kill me, SNSD fans!)

Hyun Bin’s last drama was MBC’s Friend, Our Legend, but now he’s busy with Japanese promotions for World. I believe the main reason the drama is drawing belated notice is because his romance with co-star Song Hye-gyo went public after the drama had wrapped in Korea. No doubt his Japanese fans will be watching with eyes focused on the romance between their characters.

Hyun Bin also held a fanmeeting-cum-birthday party in Yokohama on the previous day, September 25. The event was sold out and attended by a crowd of 5,000.

Friend will not be ending early

…in case you were wondering, which you probably weren’t.

MBC’s weekend miniseries Friend, Our Legend [친구, 우리들의 전설] has not had the buzzed-about broadcast run it was hoping for when it adapted one of the biggest box-office hits in Korean film history and cast name stars like Hyun Bin and Kim Min-joon in the leads. I wouldn’t call it an abject failure… but nobody could say it hasn’t been disappointing.

In fact, the drama has most recently had to fight rumors that it is cutting its broadcast run and ending early. The production has come out and issued strong denials, stating that the drama has always been planned for 20 installments and has already completed those episodes.

Hyun Bin and Seo Hyo-rim kiss for Outback

Hyun Bin may be currently appearing in a dark, intense drama (Friend, Our Legend), but he takes a decidedly light-hearted approach in his latest CF.

In this new CF for restaurant franchise Outback Steakhouse, he and actress Seo Hyo-rim cozy up together but are thwarted by food (Hyun Bin moves in for a kiss but is distracted by the sight of a steak. Hehe). The CF was shot last month in Gangwondo, and began running at the start of July. (This is the third part of the CF series.)

Hyun Bin isn’t afraid of the Friend comparisons

I haven’t had a chance to see the newly aired drama Friend, Our Legend [친구, 우리들의 전설], but perhaps you have. It premiered this past weekend on MBC, and has been the source of a lot of curiosity, given its cast (Hyun Bin, Kim Min-joon), director (Kwak Kyung-taek of the film), and high-profile source material (the movie Friend) which starred one of Korea’s most famous and well-liked movie actors, Jang Dong-gun. Naturally people have been prepared to draw comparisons between the two versions (and two lead actors in the main role of Dong-soo).

On the drama’s upside, the entire series has been produced in its entirety, meaning that the actors are now done filming and the production won’t be in a race to beat the clock to get the episodes on air. Furthermore, having the same director behind both projects pre-empts some of the comments that the drama is merely aping the style of its film predecessor.
