Korea’s making a big showing at the Berlin Film Festival, with nine films headed abroad, in competition for jury prizes. A few are films we’ve talked about for a while, like Late Autumn, while a good number of them are experimental films or shorts that are more artistically adventurous. Can’t wait to get my hands on some of these. Also, Binnie’s having some year, isn’t he?

Here’s a list of the films in competition at Berlinale:

Love Me, Love Me Not, by director Lee Yoon-ki, starring Hyun Bin and Im Soo-jung in a melodrama about a married couple on the brink of divorce. (Poster above.) This is THE HAIR that made me go crazy. Is it wrong to watch a movie for a hairdo? Well I don’t care ’cause I’m gonna do it anyway.

With military service looming and his current drama earning him raves, looks like Hyun Bin will be leaving civilian life with a bang. Not only is he constantly in the news for Secret Garden — whether it’s for his sparkly tracksuit fashions, his song on the OST, or the general fan-love for his quirky character — he’s also got two movies coming out in quick succession: Late Autumn and Love Me, Love Me Not.

Both movies are looking at February releases, coming on the heels of his drama role. Filmed in Seattle, Late Autumn co-stars Tang Wei and is a remake of a famed 1966 Lee Man-hee film of the same name, which deals with an intense three-day love affair between a woman inmate who is granted special leave for several days and a man on the run. It was initially aiming for a November release, but obviously that didn’t pan out.

My boyfriend brought me flowers! Wait…did I just say that out loud? … Oh, like you weren’t thinking it. Why he’s dressed up like a lounge singer to do it is beyond me, but hey, that smile makes up for a lot. It covers over a multitude of sins, as they say.

It’s Gong Yoo, Im Soo-jung, and puppies. Need I say more?

The stars of the upcoming romantic comedy Finding Kim Jong-wook got together for a Vogue shoot and interview, looking every bit their adorable selves. And as if they weren’t cute enough already, someone gave them puppies to hold. It’s like a caramel apple, dipped in marshmallow, with a chocolate shell.

Coffee Prince’s cool, confident Gong Yoo as a huge dork? I LOVE IT.

Here are the new poster (cute) and a preview for the upcoming romantic comedy Finding Kim Jong-wook, which stars Gong Yoo and Im Soo-jung.

The film is based on a popular musical in which heroine Im Soo-jung can’t forget her first love, to the extent that her hang-up is preventing her from moving on and dating successfully. She enlists the help of Gong Yoo, who operates a business specifically tailored to tracking down first/bygone loves, and off to India they go in search of Kim Jong-wook. They fall in love in the process.

There can never be too many good frothy-cute romantic comedies out there, as far as I’m concerned (operative word being good), so I’m looking forward to the upcoming movie Finding Kim Jong-wook, which stars two very talented and charismatic actors, Im Soo-jung (I’m Sorry, I Love You) and Gong Yoo (Coffee Prince). The movie has released its first posters, pictured here.

The film is adapted from an original musical of the same name, which premiered in 2006 and became a hit with audiences. The plot kicks off when the heroine (Im Soo-jung), decides to find the first love for whom she still pines, and becomes a client of Gong Yoo, who runs a service dedicated to finding your first love.

Hyun Bin has stated his intention to enlist for his mandatory military service soon (some reports say November, other say next year), but has announced what will probably be his last movie before the army calls. It’s a low-budget film by director Lee Yoon-ki (My Dear Enemy) and co-stars Im Soo-jung (Jeon Woo Chi).

A separated couple is the focus of the story, which is still untitled. The shoot begins mid-September and is planned to take a mere two weeks to complete.

This may be his last film project, but there’s a good chance he’ll be squeezing in one more drama role, too. In August, a rep from Hyun Bin’s management stated that he plans to take the lead in SBS’s Secret Garden following this movie, although there were subsequent reports hedging and saying he is only “looking favorably” at the drama. Should he take it, he’d be replacing Jang Hyuk, who was cast early on, and joining Ha Ji-won.

Hyun Bin’s last project was Late Autumn, which he filmed in Seattle with Tang Wei. Im Soo-jung, meanwhile, is currently in the late stages of filming the movie Finding Kim Jong-wook, which co-stars Gong Yoo.

The movie Finding Kim Jong-wook pairs actor-friends Im Soo-jung (Jeon Woo Chi) and Gong Yoo (Coffee Prince), and drew notice as soon as it was announced for being the latter’s acting comeback after completing his two years of mandatory army service. Now the film has cast its third lead, new actor Lee Je-hoon.

In the movie, an upbeat romantic comedy, Im Soo-jung is helped by Gong Yoo in tracking down her first love (the titular Kim Jong-wook), but ends up falling for Gong Yoo instead. Based on a popular musical, the film also takes a look at the musical world; Im’s character is a musical director, while Lee Je-hoon plays her cute, trusty assistant director. The writer of the original work, Jang Yoo-jung, will also be directing the movie.

Lee Je-hoon has been on the rise lately; he played a young gay man in director Kim Jo Gwang-soo‘s Just Friends? (Kim previously directed the short film Boy Meets Boy), and is currently appearing in SBS’s morning drama Three Sisters playing the youngest son. He worked with Lee Byung-heon in Influence, has a role in the soon-to-be-released high teen horror feature Ghost (which interestingly has four directors listed, one of whom is Kim of Just Friends?), and has a leading role lined up for another movie later this year. With those kinds of projects, I’d say he’s one to watch in the near future.

Finding Kim Jong-wook is planning to release later this year.

Gong Yoo was just released from military service last December, and has been enjoying a short break while looking for the follow-up to his last acting role, which was in 2007′s smash drama Coffee Prince. Now he’s announced his casting for the film Finding Kim Jong-wook, which is based on a stage musical. His co-star is his friend Im Soo-jung, with whom you may recall he was once caught up in dating rumors.

In the movie, Im Soo-jung plays a woman named Seo Ji-woo who had met her first love on a trip to India. She embarks on a search to find him, the titular Kim Jong-wook, starting off a comic series of events. In the process of looking for her first love, she falls in love instead with the man helping her on the search (Gong Yoo).

As he left the public eye at the height of his fame, Gong Yoo has been flooded with offers for dramas and films — more than 30 in total — since his return to civilian life. The musical premiered in 2006 and was a popular production, running nearly 1,200 performances.

Looks like buzz for the upcoming fantasy-action movie Jeon Woo Chi — starring Kang Dong-won and Im Soo-jung — is heating up. The film has just sold to nine overseas markets even before it makes its Korean premiere later this winter.

According to CJ Entertainment, Jeon Woo Chi screened a five-minute promo video at the American Film Market (“the largest motion picture trade show in the world”) on November 4. Following that, the film was sold to four European nations and five Asian and Southeast Asian countries. (Among the buyers: Germany, the Netherlands, China.) The film market is still open for another three days, however, so the number may go up. (Catch the trailer below; it looks like a hella fun ride.)
