The cable deluge is upon us! I’m glad to report that some of the brand-new selections look quite promising, as is the case with the adorable Color of Woman, which turns out to be a lot more feel-good than the descriptions made it seem. It’s a lot warmer and friendlier than “two careerwomen in a fierce rivalry,” because as it turns out, those rivals are also friends with a quirky relationship and enjoyable chemistry.

In fact, what this drama has going for it is fantastic chemistry all around — each main cast member has great rapport, and a different dynamic, with the other three.

New drama Color of Woman has just released two posters, which may not be terribly original, but it’s not a supremely high-concept show anyway. The posters convey the general tone and gist of the show, and are pretty cute despite being fairly standard, verging on plain.

The story’s about two rival careerwomen in a cosmetics company with opposing professional styles — one is chic and wily (Lee Soo-kyung), while the other is more ordinary with a strong work ethic (Yoon So-yi).

Finally! Commence rejoicing.

Jae Hee has been out of the army for a while now, but has taken a bit of time getting back in the limelight. (He was discharged over a year ago.) Now he’s picked his new project: Cable drama Color of Woman, which you may recall is the show Eugene recently dropped after her younger sister was in a serious car accident.

Aw, that’s too bad; the two actors could’ve had a little reunion after acting together in Three Dads, One Mom. I didn’t like that drama — or, for that matter, either of their characters (he was so weirdly nasal and annoying, and played third sidekick) — but it’s always cute when people reteam for more projects. That drama was also Jae Hee’s last, but I prefer to remember him from better projects like Delightful Girl Chun-hyang or 3 Iron, where he got to show more of his acting talent.

Color of Woman sounds like the focus is really on two careerwomen who are rivals at their cosmetics company, but Jae Hee will play the leading man. His character is a good-looking, smart, and talented (sigh) chaebol, as he’s the head of the cosmetics company where the drama takes place. It’s okay, not all chaebols have to follow the cliche: He’s playing a guy who’s fiercely loyal, who takes responsibility for all his promises, and who has a good heart.

However, despite all appearances he’s quite lonely. His family left him emotional scars and he spent a lot of time resenting his father, but after Dad falls sick, he takes over as president. To save the company, he forms a strategic planning team and prepares innovative products to launch to the international market.

Jae Hee said, “I made this decision after a lot of deliberation, since it’s my first after serving in the military. After reading the synopsis, I decided without hesitation. I spoke with director Kim Soo-young several times and we communicate well, which gave me confidence.”

The comic melo series is casting for its two female leads and premieres in December on Channel A. It’ll air on Monday-Tuesdays, which will be pretty crowded with offerings also available on tvN, jTBC, and the Big Three broadcasters.

Okay, now I’m glad Jae Hee dropped his previously planned comeback, Hooray For Love, due to injury. I’ve heard that drama’s not so great, and I’d much rather watch him in a miniseries than a weekend 50-episoder.

O Drama, please be good. Please be good. Please be good…

*wails* Nooooooooo!

Jae Hee’s much-awaited (by me, at least) comeback has been put off indefinitely due to injury, which means he’ll be dropping out of the weekend MBC drama Hooray For Love that he’d just been cast in. Boo and sadness.

His character was to be the lead opposite Lee Bo-young, a sharp, perfect-on-the-outside playboy lawyer who is hired to invalidate her divorce to her no-good ex-husband (Jung Seok-won). However, Jae Hee injured his back while practicing for a windsurfing shoot, necessitating his departure from the production.

What kills me — aside from the fact that he’s hurt, and that this drama would’ve been the first we’d seen of him in three years — is that a windsurfing shoot seems to me one of those extraneous things that aren’t central to the main plot. So, all that for a throwaway scene? SAD SAD SAD.

Jae Hee as been receiving treatment via Oriental medicine for his injury since the accident on May 30, but recurring pain has made it difficult for him to continue filming. A rep from his agency said, “Immediately after the injury, his shooting schedule was delayed and his progress was monitored while he received treatment, but he hasn’t made improvement yet. In his current condition, he won’t be able to film certain scenes, nor will he be able to handle overseas shoots or the filming schedule. With his lack of improvement, we’ve determined that continuing to delay shoots will hinder the production, and after a lot of deliberation about how not to cause trouble for the cast and crew, we consulted with producers and decided to leave the show.”

Jae Hee is back! YESSSSSSSS!!

The drama is an MBC weekend dealio called Hooray For Love, which appears to be the same drama previously referred to as She Never Loses, starring Lee Bo-young (Birth of the Rich). She plays Kang Jae-mi, divorcée who overcomes obstacles in the basic Candy-esque narrative trajectory.

Jae Hee will play Byun Dong-woo, a man with a well-to-do background, good looks, a stable job as a lawyer and good manners to boot, making him the perfect man…on the outside. That’s till you get a little closer and realize that he’s got some flaws, like the fact that he’s a total playboy. He’s also described as Jae-mi’s old enemy, who gets hired to invalidate Jae-mi’s divorce (presumably by her ex-husband). As her success story unfolds, Dong-woo becomes one of her solid supporters — and, of course, love interests.
New feature: First Episode series!

Time constraints keep us from being able to write “classic recaps” for older dramas, but I thought it would be a fun idea to revisit old dramas to recap just the first episodes. It’ll give us a chance to reminisce on old favorites while also providing an introduction to the shows.

To aid in navigation, I’ve created a new tag (use this: first episodes) so you can sort through all the Episode 1 recaps on this site. (Also, if you’ve missed it, we do have a Tag Index on the site, linked on the bottom of the page.)

For the inaugural post in this series, I’ve decided on a drama I’ve often referenced as one of my emotional favorites, 2005′s Delightful Girl Chun-hyang. We all have those dramas that occupy a special place in our hearts — whether it’s because of a particular character, storyline, or where we were in our lives when we first saw it. This one’s mine.

Actors Jae Hee and Jo Hyun-jae began their military enlistment within a day of each other back in August 2008, and they’ll be discharged within a day of each other as well; Jae Hee will be released tomorrow, June 18, while Jo Hyun-jae will complete his service the following day.

According to the reps for the actors, fans are planning to greet both upon their exits, including a contingent from abroad. (Jo’s side expects nearly 500 to be in attendance, hailing from Japan, China, Hong Kong, Thailand, and more.) Coincidentally, the last drama project for both actors before their enlistment was the same series, Three Dads, One Mom. (They played best friends who may or may not have fathered their other best friend’s daughter; when the friend is unable to have children, he solicits his best buddies as sperm donors.)

There was quite a list of stars who enlisted in the latter part of 2008, which means that we’ll soon be able to see their returns, including Eric, Kim Dong-wan, Tony Ahn, Jo Seung-woo, Ryu Soo-young, and Ohn Joo-wan.

Once actors go off to fulfill their two years of military service, it’s not often that we get to see them in the public eye until their discharge. So it’s nice to see a few of the currently enlisted entertainers together onstage for the 2009 Army Concert, which took place in Seoul on the evening of October 31.

Some of the celebrities who participated were actors Jae Hee (Three Dads One Mom), Jo In-sung (Frozen Flower), Lee Dong-wook (Partner), Kim Jae-won (Hwang Jini), and Ohn Joo-wan (Chosun Police). On the kpop side, there were singer-actors Yang Dong-geun (I Am Sam), Lee Jung (Hometown of Legends), and Kim Jung-hoon (Goong), as well as singers Sung Shi-kyung, Tony An.

As previously announced, the currently enlisted Jae Hee (Delightful Girl Chun Hyang) was granted special leave from military service upon completing his first 100 days of active duty.

(His uniform reads “Lee Hyun-kyoon,” his real name; he took on the stage name of Jae Hee to be more memorable than his birth name, which is perfectly normal but perhaps rather common-sounding for an entertainer. This is just FYI, in case you were wondering what kind of last name “Jae” is — it isn’t one.)

The actor took the opportunity to make his official bow promoting his new movie, the thriller Mandate: Mission from God. The press conference took place on the afternoon of November 2 at Seoul’s Coex theater.
