Love Rain, literally

Looks like they’re taking the title literally for Love Rain, with series leads Jang Geun-seok and Yoon-ah meeting in the rain in the above still.

The multigenerational “premium melodrama” from melo king PD Yoon Seok-ho (he of the Season dramas) has already pre-sold to Japan, no doubt owing a lot of its hype to the two stars, both of whom have heightened profiles abroad as well as home. The drama has been filming since September, starting with the earlier 1970s period; it’ll then cover the following decades and resume with their children’s generation. The analog-versus-digital dichotomy is one of the main motifs, in addition to the youthful-love-and-angst melo plots we’ve come to expect from PD Yoon. (...)

You’re My Pet releases yet another saucy poster

Another poster for You’re My Pet! To be honest, I’m not even that excited about this movie (it looks super-cute and fluffy, but I have no great expectations of it), but they do have some pretty eye-catching promotional materials. Kudos to the marketing team, you get a cookie.

In the latest one, the tagline reads, “The longer you raise him, the more exciting it gets!” The word raise, of course, refers to the conceit of Jang Geun-seok being Kim Haneul’s human “pet” in the movie, which leads to hijinks and romance. In the poster, Jang leans forward, as though to, uh, taste Kim’s (cookie) stick. And no, that’s not as dirty as it sounds. As her pet, he’s probably just trying to snatch a bite of her food like every overeager puppy in the world, right? I’m sure that’s what the producers meant. Uh huh.

The movie, which seems like it’s been filming forever, will finally release in November.

Me-ow. Well they were certainly going for sex kitten with the poster concept, only they seem to have split the difference, sexy for Kim Haneul and… just kitty for Jang Geun-seok. How come he gets bad hair, a furry sweater AND a box, while she gets a shirt and a cheeky lolli? A few more posters and a teaser (finally!) are out for the upcoming November release of highly anticipated rom-com remake You’re My Pet, and so far, they’ve done a good job of keeping my interest in the strange pairing between a noona and her pet.

Love Rain holds initial script reading

Huh, script reading already? Love Rain isn’t scheduled to air till 2012, but the main cast convened recently for its first script reading, which included actors Jang Geun-seok, Yoon-ah, Kim Shi-hoo, Sohn Eun-seok, Hwang Bora, and Seo In-gook. (I use the term scheduled loosely; technically Love Rain isn’t scheduled at all, in that it doesn’t have a concrete timeslot, but producers are aiming to secure a broadcast slot for early next year.)

Regarding the drama’s story, Yoon PD said, “There were a lot of one-sided loves in the ’70s era, a time period that the actors haven’t experienced for themselves. It was also a happy time, and the script reflects a lot of the emotions and experience that still linger in my memory.” According to one production company source, “Veteran PD Yoon Suk-ho led the proceedings and explained everything in detail, not leaving out even the smallest thing.”

Another idol joins Jang Geun-seok’s Love Rain

What is this, Idol Rain? Another pop singer joins the cast of the drama Love Rain, and this time it’s Seo In-gook, a newish singer who won the TV reality competition show Superstar K in 2009.

Seo In-gook will play one of a trio of university students in the 1970s portion of the drama, with buddies Jang Geun-seok and Kim Shi-hoo. His character is a law student who rules the music cafe C’est La Vie.

Yoon-ah cast as Jang Geun-seok’s leading lady

Looks like it won’t be Han Hyo-joo after all; “Season drama” director Yoon Suk-ho has cast pop idol and SNSD member Yoon-ah as the female lead in Love Rain (still a working title, apparently), opposite Jang Geun-seok.

The plot: Love Rain is “a melodrama that transcends generations and paints a pure love story with emotion.” It spans from the “pure love of the 1970s analog age, to the trendy ways of today’s digital age.” Yoon-ah plays Kim Yoon-hee, a young woman with a pure appearance, in the 1970s portion of the drama, and then also plays her daughter, named Yuri.

Variety Roulette: Knee-Drop Guru (Murupak Dosa)

And now for our second installment in our Variety Roulette series, where we grab random episodes of random variety shows and hope they’re any good. Our inaugural post was on talk show Strong Heart, and this one will be another talk show and another one of Kang Ho-dong’s four gigs, Murupak Dosa, or Knee-Drop Guru.

The guest of honor? Drama star (You’re Beautiful, Beethoven Virus), former child actor, current leading man, he of the pretty hair and the boyish smile, Jang Geun-seok.

EPISODE 248. Broadcast on September 9, 2011.

girlfriday: So the premise of Murupak Dosa, or Knee-Drop Guru, is pretty simple. It’s just a one-on-one talk show, basically between Kang Ho-dong and a celebrity guest. Because it’s a singled-out interview that usually spans two episodes, you have to be a fairly big star to be a guest on the show. It used to be a small segment of the larger program Golden Fishery, but now it’s the main attraction.

javabeans: The title refers to the type of guru, or wise old sage, that people would go to for advice. They’d typically kneel and sit back on their heels, which is where the title comes from, although in the show they’ve modified that arrangement with that recessed flooring so everyone can sit comfortably.

Jang Geun-seok as Kim Haneul’s pet

How cute is this official promo poster for You’re My Pet? My first reaction was to Awww at the cuteness… and my second was to belatedly realize that things are looking… a little… risqué there. Rawr. In more ways than one.

I feel like a broken record about this movie, so here’s the nutshell version of the plot: Kim Haneul is a successful careerwoman who’s unlucky in love. She encounters Jang Geun-seok, and decides to take him in as her pet-friend-housemate. Romance develops.

The movie, based on a Japanese manga/drama, also has a projected release date and is now planning to be in theaters in November.

Also: I knew Jang Geun-seok was a cat man! Everything about his look is admittedly sort of awful (unruly curls, frilly shirt, cuffed jeans), but somehow he just looks adorable despite it all.

Phew, well that’s a relief! You’re My Pet, the Korean movie remake of the popular Japanese manga and drama, has finally wrapped, successfully ending a production period that has seen its share of setbacks.

I wouldn’t call it a troubled shoot, per se, because from what I can see from stills and behind-the-scenes snapshots, it appears to be a fun, bubbly set with two adorable leads — Jang Geun-seok and Kim Haneul — who look like they share cute chemistry, and maybe some hair products. Oh heck, they practically share the same hair, all long and flowy and silky smooth. Kim Haneul has long been a star noted for her enviable hair, and Jang Geun-seok looks to be her male counterpart; even his drama character in Mary Stayed Out All Night was pretty protective of his beloved conditioner.

But that aside, the movie did take its time getting started, after first casting Jang back in April 2010. There were delays getting production started, until finally things got going this spring. So I’m relieved to hear all has ended well, and now we can look forward to actually seeing the darned thing.
