Jeon Do-yeon returns with a remake of a classic

One of Korea’s top actresses, “Cannes Queen” Jeon Do-yeon, is returning to film her next project following a yearlong break (during which she’d given birth to her first child). She’ll take on a remake of the highly regarded 1960 film The Housemaid [하녀], which gets updated with a modern take.

The original sounds pretty fascinating: a housemaid moves in with a family of four and things take a dark turn. Seducing the husband is only the beginning of the trouble, as the maid’s bizarre behavior escalates and the wife tries to assert her place. Although its themes may seem familiar today — adultery, murder, twisted ambition — the provocative thriller was made in the “Golden Age” of Korean cinema, back before the censorship code descended upon the film industry. Jeon will play the maid character.

The Housemaid, widely seen as one of the top Korean movies of all time, is noted for its solid structure, shocking and erotic storyline, and the casting of top actors of the day (Kim Jin-kyu, Joo Jeung-nyeo — and even a young Ahn Sung-ki as the son, who is now a respected veteran actor).

Opening red carpet at the 14th Pusan International Film Festival

On October 8, the 14th Pusan International Film Festival, or PIFF, opened in Busan. (Yes, the city takes a different official spelling than the film festival. Blame inconsistent Romanization.)

As the largest film festival in Korea, it drew a large list of attendees, as you can see from the long list of red-carpet walkers. It was definitely a star-studded opening night, and even included one familiar Hollywood face (Josh Hartnett).

This year’s PIFF features its largest lineup to date, screening 355 films from 70 countries, and closes on the 16th.

Thirst’s preview attracts A-list VIPs

Whoaaa. Check out this new still from the vampire film Thirst [박쥐], which recently confirmed that it will be screening at Cannes International Film Festival later this year.

The much-buzzed-about film held its press conference and VIP preview screening on the afternoon of April 24 in Seoul. Given the movie’s high profile (and its director and lead actor), the screening attracted some big names, such as Lee Byung-heon, Jeon Do-yeon, Won Bin, Rain, and Song Hye-gyo.

Lead actor Song Kang-ho, playing the vampire priest who falls for his friend’s wife (Kim Ok-bin), discussed some of the film’s more provocative scenes, one of which serves as the crucial point of the film. He had discussed the scene in some depth with director Park Chan-wook and had no qualms shooting it, as he agreed that it was essential to the story.

Today marks the debut of MBC’s Return of Iljimae, starring Jung Il-woo. The series premiered to mixed reactions, with some viewers calling it “refreshing” while others complained about excessive narration. I’m looking forward to it anyway. [My Daily]

Jeon Ji-hyun (My Sassy Girl) is caught up as the victim of an attempt to illegally forge a cell phone to tap into her calls. Representatives from her own management, Sidus HQ, have been identified as the culprits. Authorities are investigating and arrest warrants are being issued. Gives the fiction of A Star’s Lover a ripped-from-the-headlines feel, doesn’t it? [Asia Economy]

Kim Hee-sun (Smile Again) is a proud new mama: On the 21st, she gave birth to her first child, a daughter. [Star News]

Actress Jeon Do-yeon (Secret Sunshine), also pregnant, was seen on the 21st at the same hospital as Kim, but only for a checkup. She’s due in early February. [Now News]

Boys Before Flowers actor Kim Hyun-joong was in a minor car accident on his way to filming on the 21st. A car tried to cut in and the vehicles collided, but it was only a small bump and nobody was injured. [Seoul News]

The Lee Min-ho fervor continues: The 21-year-old has been selected to promote LG Telecom, and will appear in an ad with Boys Before Flowers co-stars Gu Hye-sun and Kim Bum. He’s also deliberating over modeling contracts for clothing brands, cars, beer, etc. [Sports Khan]

Lee Min-ho is still a little surprised at his own fame, though; he’s been busy working and first felt the impact of his sudden popularity when he was filming an outdoor scene last week and the arrival of a mob of 3,000 fans forced shooting to shut down and move elsewhere. He’s not the only one, though: Kim Bum and Kim So-eun were shooting a scene at the girls’ restaurant job last week, and because so many neighborhood bystanders stopped to watch, police had to step in and manage traffic. [Sports Khan]

Gu Hye-sun is also benefiting from Boys Before Flowers‘ popularity; like her co-star, she’s also fielding multiple CF offers, both domestically and from Japan. The offers range from mobile phones to cosmetics and food products. [Joy News]

And look who else is jumping on the BBF bandwagon: Singer-actor Lee Ji-hoon (You’re My Destiny) recently launched an online shopping mall called “Paris Homme.” Thanks to the drama, the line’s prep-school look has experienced a sharp increase in sales: up 50% from the previous month. [Mk.co.kr]

Singer and “romantic guy” Alex released a solo album last summer, and on January 20, he held his first solo concert in Tokyo. Aside from his work with groovetronic Clazziquai, Alex gained Japanese fans in 2005 when participating with hip-hop group M-Flo on their 2005 remix album “Dope Space Nine.” He was also featured on M-Flo’s 2007 “Cosmicolor” and with artists like Amuro Namie, Koda Kumi, and Bonnie Pink. One fine day with My Dear Enemy

“Cannes queen” Jeon Do-yeon reteams with “Chungmuro’s blue chip” Ha Jung-woo in a new movie (they’d previously both acted in the drama series Lovers in Prague), directed by Lee Yoon-ki (Ad-lib Night). While the direct translation comes to “A Fine Day” [멋진 하루], My Dear Enemy has been selected as the English-language title.

The film held its press conference on the afternoon of August 26 at Seoul’s Artsonje Center, where indie band Ibadi (featuring lead singer Horan of Clazziquai) took the stage for a performance. (And Jeon sure looks radiant — maybe it’s her pregnancy?)

The story is described as a departure from the typical romance formula, and centers around an odd day spent between two former lovers. The woman (Jeon) has no job, no boyfriend, and is past the ripe old age of 30; she meets with her ex because of a money issue and the two spend a weird day together. The film opens September 25

After her Cannes Best Actress win for Secret Sunshine, Jeon’s international profile has risen, prompting questions of whether that translates into ambitions to act abroad. She answered:

“I’ve had a few offers for foreign films, but I thought of how difficult it is acting in Korean, and how difficult it would be acting in another language. I talked about this jokingly with [Sunshine co-star] Song Kang-ho, but we both came to the conclusion that we don’t have that kind of confidence. We don’t even dare dream of it.”

Thus spake two of Korea’s most acclaimed actors — finally, a voice of reason.

New brides become new moms

Add two more high-profile actresses to the list of the recently knocked-up. (Kim Hee-sun announced her happy news in May and is currently three months pregnant; comedienne Park Kyung-lim announced hers, due January 2009, last month; and frequent variety-show host Kang Ho-dong becomes a father in March.)

“Queen of Cannes” Jeon Do-yeon (so called because of her Best Actress win at Cannes last year for Secret Sunshine) has just announced she is three months pregnant, and planning to give birth next February. Jeon was married last year to a businessman, and has just finished shooting her next project, the Lee Yoon-ki film My Dear Enemy [멋진 하루], which co-stars Ha Jung-woo.

Then there’s also newlywed TV actress Park Eun-hye (Yi San), who was married in April and has also just announced her pregnancy. Hers is the earliest of the bunch, currently only in its tenth week. Congrats to all, and I guess we can all expect to hear a bunch of birth announcements early next year.

The 2007 Korean Film Awards

On December 1, stars gathered in Seoul for the 6th Annual Korean Film Awards, honoring the latest achievements in (what else?) Korean cinema.

Notable among its winners were the multiple talents behind one of Korea’s most critically acclaimed films of the year, Secret Sunshine — which won raves at Cannes Film Festival, where its also won its star, Jeon Do Yeon, the top acting honor.
