Actress Jeon Hye-bin (Yacha) has announced that she will be dropping out of Poseidon, which is due to, and adds to, the drama’s growing list of troubles. Uh-oh. Does this portend even more problems for the already beleaguered production?

According to a source with the production company, Jeon is exiting the drama because of its repeated shooting delays, as well as the fact that the drama lost its airdate, which had been scheduled for May, but was then retracted by SBS. Stating that it would be too difficult for her to wait around in uncertainty, she decided to bow out.

Granted, Jeon isn’t one of the main leads, so her departure probably won’t have a huge effect on the drama. (The main leads being Eric, Kim Kang-woo, and Kim Ok-bin.) Plus, it’s probably easier for supporting actor to leave at an indication of trouble than, say, the headlining star who’s locked in, if not by contract stipulations then certainly by reputation and image considerations. Still, Jeon Hye-bin has filmed the first two episodes, which means reshoots are required, which adds some burden to an already taxed production.

The reason for the filming delay is attributed in large part to the particularly cold winter, combined with the fact that the drama has a lot of shoots on or around the ocean, being as it’s set among an elite maritime counterterrorism unit. With the heavy snowfalls lasting longer than in previous years, that pushed back shoots till mid-March.

The drama is currently without an airdate. It’s understandable, since it wasn’t likely to make its initial May 9 premiere, but still worrisome since the show is running into so many issues so early in the game. Fingers crossed it makes it through and on the air without further complications…

The 12-episode series premiered last weekend to a very impressive — one might call it shockingly high — ratings number of 3.5%. To put it into some perspective, this is a cable drama that airs on midnight on Fridays, where anything above 1% would be hailed a success.

Yacha is set in the Joseon era against the backdrop of a secret organization running under the king’s authorization. The story unfolds around two brothers and one woman, and incorporates themes of fate, ambition, and revenge.

Jeon Hye-bin is expanding her acting repertoire by taking a stab at musical theater with the stage version of Singles, the 2003 film starring now-deceased Jang Jin-young.

The musical’s director, Jo Haeng-deok, said of his leading actress, “She is a multi-talented actress and as this is her first try at musicals, she is throwing herself into rehearsals, so I’m expecting a lot of her. You can look forward to seeing her portraying Na Nan’s bright, lovable character.” (Na Nan is the role originated by Jang Jin-young in the film.)

I like seeing singers-turned-actors go for musical theater (some others who have gone this route include Lee Ji-hoon, Ok Joo-hyun); Jeon has focused on her acting in recent years, but she got her start as a dance/pop singer. She had a sort of middling pop career and seems to be finding her groove better as an actress with dramas like Scales of Providence.

SONG OF THE DAY

Jeon Hye-bin – “If” from the Witch Amusement OST. I think she has a lovely singing voice, but her own music was horribly generic dance-pop and overworked to death. I like her vocals much better in this track.
I briefly mentioned the Love Tree Project when it was announced that a group of stars with management firm Namoo Actors, including Kim So-yeon, were putting out a special album for charity. Currently, the song featuring Moon Geun-young, which was written by singer-songwriter Yoon Sang, is showing a heated response on multiple online portals.

The project will comprise 17 songs in its entirety (with actors Shin Se-kyung, Yoo Jun-sang, Lee Yoon-ji, Han Hye-jin and more), but for now, Moon’s track comes packaged with songs sung by actors Kim Kang-woo, Jeon Hye-bin, and Kim Hyo-jin. (Kim Kang-woo’s is my favorite!) Listen to all four tracks below.

On October 8, the 14th Pusan International Film Festival, or PIFF, opened in Busan. (Yes, the city takes a different official spelling than the film festival. Blame inconsistent Romanization.)

As the largest film festival in Korea, it drew a large list of attendees, as you can see from the long list of red-carpet walkers. It was definitely a star-studded opening night, and even included one familiar Hollywood face (Josh Hartnett).

This year’s PIFF features its largest lineup to date, screening 355 films from 70 countries, and closes on the 16th.

Since horror is supposed to offer a chill in the hot summer months, we can see why there’s such a sudden burst of horror material these days. Two television dramas will soon add to the tally, giving us a Monday-thru-Thursday lineup of horror through August and September.

MBC’s Hon (“Soul”) is first, premiering next Wednesday and starring Lee Seo-jin (Yi San), Lee Jin (King and I), and newcomer Im Joo-eun. The drama recently released its latest teaser posters in anticipation of its August 5 airdate.

The film Portrait of a Beauty [미인도] held its press conference and VIP preview on November 4, and a bevy of VIPs showed up to catch an advance look at the risqué period film. It has attracted much comparison to the drama series Painter of the Wind (see trailer below), as both deal with the life of the Joseon artist Shin Yoon-bok. They also seem to share a similar cinematic flair, although obviously there are key differences between a film and a drama series.

The cast also talked to reporters at a press conference, led by lead star Kim Min-sun and her co-stars Kim Young-ho, Chu Ja-hyun, and Kim Nam-gil, who for some reason has changed his stage name from Lee Han (of Goodbye Solo, When Spring Comes). I don’t get this whole changing-names-mid-career thing (see also: Go Jun-hee). Why bother at this point?

Portrait of a Beauty opens to the public on November 13.

What could pop-singer-turned-actress Jeon Hye-bin (known during her somewhat disappointing singing career as simply Bin) be cheering in her peppy cheerleading outfit? Could she be expressing her support for the Olympics? Rooting her countrymen on to victory? Indulging creepy-old-men fantasies?

Not… exactly.

Here she films in the city of Goyang at Jonghap Stadium for her upcoming drama Scales of Faith (also possible translation: Scales of God, although I can’t be sure without the hanja). This scene involves a sports meet for employees of the Judicial Research and Training Institute; she plays a lawyer in the series.

Jeon Hye-bin’s last acting role was in the sageuk King and I; before that she acted in the hilariously silly Witch Amusement. Scales premieres on August 22 as SBS’s new Friday series.
