Jo In-sung back from the army and fans rejoice

…and another celebrity completes his army duty and returns to the eagerly waiting arms of his adoring fans.

That man being Jo In-sung of the much acclaimed What happened in Bali with Ha Ji-won (the drama that Yoon Kye-sang lost many a night’s sleep over…hehe), who completed his duties this past May. Jo In-sung wasted no time returning to the spotlight and has scheduled fan meetings in Seoul and Tokyo, which he dubs as a “reunion” with his fans.

The first stop of his tour began in Seoul on the 31st of July, and he was greeted with a warm welcome by 600 of his loyal fans. Stepping up to the mike as his own MC, he presided over the event that marked his first meet and greet since returning to the public eye. The man also won brownie points by serenading the audience, which left the ladies swooning in their seats. (What woman can resist a man’s serenade?)

Jo In-sung plans his comeback project(s)

Currently enlisted actor Jo In-sung (Frozen Flower) is wasting no time; though he won’t be released from service for another month, already he’s scoping out dramas and movies, and has settled on a film as his comeback project. He’ll take the lead in Fist Fighting (the title, kwonbup, refers to martial arts techniques using bare fists), which is directed by Park Kwang-hyun of the satirically funny commercial and critical hit Welcome to Dongmakgol.

This 10 billion won project takes on a sci-fi fantasy bent, set against a “city of the future.” In it, Jo plays a high school senior who taps into super-strength whenever he witnesses injustice, and has to save the village that’s home to the girl he falls in love with. Huh. I’m not so sure how I feel about the almost-30-year-old Jo playing a high schooler, even if he does look younger than his age. Maybe the genre aspect will take care of the potential weirdness? Also: It’s not clear what about the movie makes it futuristic or fantastical, so we’ll have to wait for more info on that.

He is also reportedly considering a couple drama projects: There’s Four Seasons, which comes from respected melo scripwriter Lee Kyung-hee (Thank You, Will It Snow For Christmas), as well as a drama based on Japanese manga Ice Blade (Jiraishin).

Jo, who began his military service in April 2009, will be discharged on May 4. Fans, get your welcomin’ arms in the ready position!

Actor Jo In-sung (Frozen Flower, What Happened in Bali) shares pictures of his life in the army. His unit is out on a team week, and the pictures show a fun side of army life, as Jo catches mussels by the sea.

Jo was amazed at how easily the fan-mussels were caught, and he joked, “If I want to do this for a living, do I have to give up acting?”

It’s nice to see a side of army life that isn’t so rigid and confined.

Enlisted celebrities participate in Army concert

Once actors go off to fulfill their two years of military service, it’s not often that we get to see them in the public eye until their discharge. So it’s nice to see a few of the currently enlisted entertainers together onstage for the 2009 Army Concert, which took place in Seoul on the evening of October 31.

Some of the celebrities who participated were actors Jae Hee (Three Dads One Mom), Jo In-sung (Frozen Flower), Lee Dong-wook (Partner), Kim Jae-won (Hwang Jini), and Ohn Joo-wan (Chosun Police). On the kpop side, there were singer-actors Yang Dong-geun (I Am Sam), Lee Jung (Hometown of Legends), and Kim Jung-hoon (Goong), as well as singers Sung Shi-kyung, Tony An.

Jo In-sung enlists

By now, we all know the drill.

Another 28-year-old actor (or, in this case, he’s a few months shy of 28) — who’s been hyping up his army departure for months, with a “last movie” (Frozen Flower), a “last fanmeeting” (in Japan), and a “last photo shoot” (for a clothing ad campaign) — finally heads off to complete his roughly two-year service in the military.

Jo In-sung enlisted on April 6, sent off with the requisite camera crew and crowd of about 200 fans.

Jo In-sung (Frozen Flower) is finally headed off to fulfill his mandatory military duty — his official enlistment comes in just one more day, on Monday, April 6.

Before he steps out of the media spotlight, Jo has released his latest photo spread, which marks the close of his five-year tenure as the brand model for menswear brand Trugen.

With Jo’s departure, the baton has officially passed from one generation’s “flower man” to the next — taking over as brand model from Jo is Boys Before Flowers star Lee Min-ho.

Whoa there, Jo In-sung. These photos from a recent Japanese fanmeeting are just begging for a caption contest, although with that Who-like hair, the thoughts that immediately sprang to my mind are perhaps best expressed in the words of Dr. Seuss. Like, for instance:

Jo In-sung’s last fanmeeting

…before enlisting in military service, that is.

Some stars choose to head off to their mandatory two-year (more or less) army duty with a bang, and some choose to go quietly. The 28-year-old Jo In-sung (Frozen Flower) is choosing a fanmeeting in Japan as his last official event before his March enlistment. Actually, that’s two fanmeetings, if ya wanna get technical: the March 3 event will be held in Osaka, while another on the 5th will be in Tokyo.

Originally scheduled for a January 2009 enlistment, Jo pushed back the date in order to promote his latest film, Frozen Flower co-starring Joo Jin-mo, more effectively.

Jo’s previous Japanese fanmeetings were held last March to the tune of 3,700 attendees.
