Now THIS looks cool. The trailer and posters are out for the historical spy movie Coffee, which are totally different from what I was expecting, but in the best way — it’s historical action with a twist. And the character posters have a comic book feel that is totally different from what I thought this movie would be, but I’m digging the stylized look.

The preview is below, and what starts out as simple coffee-break happytime for Emperor Gojong soon takes an intrigue-filled turn when spies start running wild and people start dying. The background is late Joseon Dynasty, but the ambiance is total modernized thriller, with a stylish fusion bent.

Death by coffee. That seems to be the main idea behind spy-intrigue-historical-thriller film Coffee (phonetically Kabi, per the old word for the drink). Well, I’m sure there are worse ways to go. Said the coffee nut who named herself after the addiction.

Above is the film’s newly released poster, which I find intriguing. It sets up the central premise of the story, which is an assassination attempt made on Emperor Gojong via his personal barista. Park Hee-soon reclines in his seat, playing the emperor, while served by the woman at the center of the conspiracy, Kim So-yeon. Watching is a mysterious man, Joo Ji-mo.

Will Kim So-yeon be filling the spot vacated by Lee Da-hae? It looks like the big-budget spy melodrama Coffee is finally getting back on its feet after some huge production delays. And uh…not to lead the parade or anything, but if I were casting a spytastic movie, historical or not, I’d have started by knocking on Kim So-yeon’s door. Did you SEE her one-episode stint on IRIS-spinoff Athena? Rest my case.

She’s still considering the project so it’s not a done deal, but now that her name’s being bandied about, I’m suddenly curious to know if it’s going to be more action-centric than I had previously assumed. Coffee takes place in Emperor Gojong’s reign in the late Joseon era, and the lead role is the emperor’s barista, who is also a key player in his assassination attempt.

Lee Da-hae has been confirmed for a leading role opposite Joo Jin-mo in the big-budget period film 가비, described as a period spy-melodrama.
The movie is about a secret plot by Russian spies to assassinate Joseon’s Emperor Gojong, who was a man who knew how to enjoy his coffee. (He reigned from 1863 to 1907, which puts this movie in the twilight years of the Joseon era. It’s a slice of time I grew interested in when watching the excellent mystery-treasure-hunt drama Mixed-Up Investigative Agency, which is a modern-day comedy whose major plot point involved Emperor Gojong and his year of living in refuge at the Russian diplomatic house in Seoul.)

Korea’s having a good year in the festival circuit. With Cannes under its belt and sights set on Toronto, Chungmuro takes on Venice, with three films next month.

Invincible, starring Song Seung-heon, Joo Jin-mo, Kim Kang-woo, and Jo Han-seon, will be part of a retrospective, honoring prolific Hong Kong director John Woo (A Better Tomorrow). The four leads are expected to appear for the premiere at the festival.

Jung Woo-sung (Athena) will also be walking the red carpet for his new film Reign of Assassins, (The Swordsman’s World) produced by John Woo and co-starring Michelle Yeoh. I don’t think this one counts as a Korean film, as it was shot in China, but it’s a co-production, so I’ll go with it. What with Athena’s Italian shoots and the festival, it looks like Jung is Italy-bound for a good part of this summer/fall.

Lee Seon-kyun and Jung Yumi‘s indie film Oki’s Movie will also be a contender, and will be officially competing (whereas the others will be more exhibition-style films). This will be the first time attending Venice for both Lee and Jung.

Looks like the Venetian red carpet will be the place to catch a Korean action star next month. I’d go for the Grand Canal alone, but the possibility of seeing Jung Woo-sung speed by James-Bond-style in a boat? Swoon.

The 67th Venice International Film Festival will run from September 1-11.

Upcoming gangster-action film Invincible [무적자], starring Song Seung-heon, Joo Jin-mo, Kim Kang-woo, and Jo Han-seon, has released its official poster and trailer. It looks cheesy, epic, and therefore awesome.

The remake of 1986′s A Better Tomorrow (starring Chow Yun-fat) can’t possibly top the original, in my opinion. That film is the highlight of one of the most productive decades in Hong Kong cinema. It seems that what they’re going for here is a slick, contemporary version of the story, which they can hopefully pull off by trying to be different from the original, rather than re-do Chow Yun-fat. Because that would be an exercise in futility.

The tale is one we’re all familiar with, even if you haven’t seen the original film: brotherhood, loyalty, Fate entangling the four men in dramatic ways. This latest poster is a little less cheese-tastic than the character stills, so that’s a plus.

The trailer below looks rockin’. Joo Jin-mo will be the anchor, Song Seung-heon will strain to emote, and I have a feeling that Jo Han-seon is going to steal the show.

The first official poster is out for action-noir blockbuster Invincible, which stars Joo Jin-mo, Song Seung-heon, Kim Kang-woo, and Jo Han-seon. The tagline reads, “Brothers who meet as enemies, friends who team up through loyalty.” That refers to the fact that Joo and Song are partners involved in illegal arms trade, while Kim plays a cop who’s also Joo’s younger brother.

What do you think — are they less cheesy than the character stills? (I’d say yes on the whole, but Song Seung-heon’s lollipop smirk still makes me laugh. Also — do mine eyes deceive me, or has somebody Photoshopped the lollipop stick badly near his mouth?)

This A Better Tomorrow remake touts a 10 billion won production budget and includes involvement from four countries (Korea, Japan, Thailand, and China). It will release in theaters in September, in time for the busy Chuseok holiday.

Invincible [Mujeokja, or 무적자] is the Korean remake of the 1986 Hong Kong mobster noir film A Better Tomorrow, and just wrapped filming on July 1 at Gamcheon Port in Busan. The shoot lasted just over five months, having begun on January 25 and including location filming abroad in Thailand.

The film stars Song Seung-heon in the role originated by Chow Yun-fat, Joo Jin-mo (pictured above), Jo Han-seon, and Kim Kang-woo. It is planning to release over the Chuseok holiday in September, which is one of the largest holidays of the year (and therefore a big movie-going weekend).

Hyun Bin is going back to work with director Kwak Kyung-taek, with whom he shot last year’s dark drama series Friend, Our Legend. (Kwak also filmed the original movie, Friend, which starred Jang Dong-gun and served as the basis for the drama adaptation.)

Hyun Bin will be the lead in the film Beautiful Us [아름다운 우리], joining Joo Jin-mo, who was cast earlier. (This film will also be Joo’s second time working with Kwak; his first project with him was 2007′s movie A Love.)

Beautiful Us is based on the real-life Second Battle of Yeonpyeong, when a North Korean patrol boat attacked a South Korean boat in 2002. A large-scale project, it boasts a production budget of 15 billion won and will be filmed in 3D. Filming will commence in mid-June.

Hyun Bin hasn’t necessarily been able to replicate the massive popularity he gained after 2005′s My Name Is Kim Sam-soon (follow-up dramas Snow Queen and The World They Live In had disappointing broadcasts, though the dramas themselves were well-made). However, he has been making some interesting choices in recent years and I think he’s positioning himself well for a jump to a more serious acting career with stuff like Friend, the remake of the classic film Late Autumn, and now another big-budget Kwak project.
