High Kick 3: Episodes 1-4

New project!

As you know, High Kick 3: Counterattack of the Short Legs (hereafter called simply High Kick 3) is a long-running series, with 120 episodes scheduled to air on a daily basis, Mondays through Fridays, for the next year. We generally don’t tackle long projects on this site, because I know from experience that it’s a huge commitment to undertake, and one that runs a high risk of burnout. And I hate starting things that I can’t finish.

But I loved the original series, aka Unstoppable High Kick, and decided that if I felt the same way about High Kick 3, I’d consider experimenting with recap format. So: Resident Running Man specialist gummimochi and I will be working together to cover High Kick 3 in a weekly wrap-up. Call ‘em weecaps, if you will.

For those of you new to Korean sitcoms, they are touted as comedies but really aren’t necessarily any funnier than a regular drama. They’re basically lighter family shows with loosely overarching plots, lots of characters, and short episodes. With episodes only running about 22 minutes long, I think the weecap format really suits this show better than the full-on recap style, because the slice-of-life plots can sometimes meander, or trail off without definite resolutions.

With that out of the way, let’s get this sucker started! (Note: Wednesday’s episode was pre-empted, so only four aired in the first week.)

Julien Kang added to Road No. 1

Can’t say this has me too excited: Canadian model-actor Julien Kang has been added to the Korean War epic drama Road No. 1, which stars So Ji-sub, Yoon Kye-sang, and Kim Haneul. According to Kang’s management, he will be playing a U.S. Marine platoon leader.

I wasn’t really impressed with Julien Kang in Dream, where he played one of the Flower Fighters (a team of mixed martial artists made up of pretty boys), but he’s apparently doing better playing a warm character in the family sitcom High Kick Through the Roof. While he films that currently running series, he has been working out and training in martial arts in preparation for Road No. 1, which he will soon begin filming.

Road No. 1 will air on MBC in June.

…and that’s because here we have a couple of new photos showing off the hard bod of Julien Kang, an actor who plays a fellow mixed martial arts fighter character in the upcoming SBS drama Dream.

Not only does Julien have the muscular physique to play such an athlete, he’s the real-life younger brother to fighter Dennis Kang — not that this makes him an automatically better fighter, but it does suggest he’s got a certain familiarity with the sport.

SBS’s Dream fills out its cast

Pop singer-dancer Sohn Dam-bi is giving up on her Hollywood debut and is turning instead to her new drama series, Dream. She had built up some hype (pun, har) for her entrée into Hollywood in the dance-themed film Hype Nation, but due to numerous postponements in the filming schedule, she’s decided to drop the film altogether.

That means she’ll be focusing on the drama Dream instead, which will take over Ja Myung Go‘s Monday-Tuesday timeslot. The drama has added Choi Yeo-jin (Surgeon Bong Dal-hee) and Julien Kang to its cast list, who will join male leads Joo Jin-mo (Frozen Flower) and Kim Bum (Boys Before Flowers).

Kim Bum plays a youngster who takes up mixed martial arts, while Joo Jin-mo plays a sports agent. Julien Kang will take up the role of another mixed martial arts fighter, which may be fitting as he is the younger brother of real-life martial artist Denis Kang. (Julien, 27, is a Korean-Canadian model who’d appeared on the male version of Misuda, aka Global Talk Show, which features a panel of non-Koreans living in Korea.)

And I’m… not feeling this casting. I mean, Kim Bum is a cutie and Joo Jin-mo oozes masculine sexiness, but with all the interesting-sounding dramas coming up, I’m not convinced with this one yet. Julien made his official acting debut playing one of Choi Ji-woo’s movie co-stars in the drama series A Star’s Lover; he was onscreen for about a minute and was, erm, forgettable. Who knows, maybe Sohn Dam-bi will turn out okay, but she’s had no experience so I hold no great hope.

Choi Yeo-jin at least is a decent actress, and she’ll take on the role of a television producer for a station that has exclusive rights to cover mixed martial arts fights.
