How gorgeous is she? Jung Hye-young has been transitioning into roles playing mothers more than leading ladies (Return of Iljimae, Playful Kiss), but that doesn’t mean she looks at all like an ajumma. Exhibit A: This photo spread for luxury magazine Heren, shot in Paris.

She’s dressed in “European luxury classic” fashions, and at 37, she gets my vote for prettiest, daintiest K-drama mother ever. Even if she’s really only about a dozen years older than the boys she’s supposedly mothered onscreen (Jung Il-woo, Kim Hyun-joong). While this kind of look is not at all my bag, Jung rocks the short hair and the blood-red lips. Having Paris as the backdrop doesn’t hurt, either.

Gorgeous actress Jung Hye-young (Playful Kiss, Return of Iljimae) shows that being 38 and the mother of three doesn’t mean you can’t work it on the pages of a magazine, and then some. What’s your secret, and can you share with the rest of the class?

The shoot is decidedly bridal, but regardless, the styling is lovely, and Jung looks as doll-like as she always does. She’s been on a great run with her last two dramas, showing her broad range playing two very different moms to Kim Hyun-joong and Jung Il-woo, despite being only 13-14 years older than both actors. In Playful Kiss she played the quirky, energetic matchmaking mom, who liked to dress her son in girls’ clothing for fun. She was meddlesome and tiring for the hero, but we always loved her crazy antics because they were in service of getting the couple together.

Here we get our first look at a Playful Kiss family portrait, which depicts the parents and younger brother of Kim Hyun-joong‘s lead character.

By all reports (I haven’t seen the original series myself) the family has a fair amount of screentime, in particular the mother character, played here by the wonderful Jung Hye-young. She’ll act the matchmaker for her son and Jung So-min‘s character, who comes to live with their family temporarily when her house is wrecked, since their fathers are friends.

I just hope the family parts won’t get too jokesy, because the over-the-top family members were a source of much awkwardness in Boys Before Flowers. (Again I repeat to myself: Have faith in director Hwang!)

Playful Kiss will air on September 1.

There’s an interesting phenomenon these days where actresses are being cast in the role of Mom younger and younger. Not only that, but sometimes the age gap between Mom and Child is quite ridiculous, if you think about it. Jung Hye-young is no stranger to playing a mom, as she knocked it out of the park playing Iljimae’s heartbroken mother in Return of Iljimae, barely 14 years older than Jung Il-woo. In Playful Kiss, she’s now set to play opposite Kim Hyun-joong in a similar capacity, who is only 13 years her junior.

What’s crazier is the age gap on the set of SBS’s Giant, where Kim Suh-hyung (34) plays mother to Park Jin-hee (32). Now THAT’s a little nuts.

After all those rumors and teases about possible cast additions, it’s good to know this drama is actually making decisions now. Some make me happy, others I have no opinion on, and others are decidedly meh.

Let’s start with one that makes me happy: Jung Hye-young, the actress married to former k-popper Sean, whose casting makes sense given that she starred in director Hwang In-roi‘s last project, Return of Iljimae. This role will allow her to show a much lighter side, as she plays a cheery matchmaker who helps along the main loveline between Kim Hyun-joong and Jung So-min‘s characters.

What a packed episode — so much happens!

Iljimae has gone through a lot in his relatively short life thus far, and it seems like his life will never be calm. When it feels like his work will never be over, will he be able to ever be happy and content, as he once promised Wol-hee? I’m very curious to know how this drama will wrap up with only one more episode to go…

This episode really gets the action going, which is welcome because, as I mentioned in the previous recap, I prefer more personal storylines to politics. Not that politics is bad — it adds depth and historical context, certainly — but I like both in a nice balance.

Return of Iljimae is back! I know, I know, it’s been ages since I started this drama. I’ve been determined to finish it for a long time, but time kept slipping away from me. I figured that having a goal to shoot for would help move things along, so in honor of Jung Il-woo‘s upcoming new drama My Fair Lady, I will be wrapping up Return of Iljimae just in time to welcome him in his new series, which premieres next Wednesday.

Congratulations to the happy couple! Kpop singer Sean and actress Jung Hye-young are known around the biz for their super-sweet displays of affection and their adorable two children, whom they sometimes bring along with them on public events. Now the couple has added a third child to their family, born on the morning of June 14.

Joining big sister Ha-eum and brother Ha-rang is baby boy Ha-yul, weighing in at 2.58 kg. Sean made an announcement via mini-homepage, saying that both mother and child are well: “I’m thankful to Hye-young for enduring through the ten months of carrying our child, and to our newly born Ha-yul for growing up healthy inside his mother’s stomach.” He added, “Ha-eum and Ha-rang love their brother Ha-yul very much, and Ha-eum has said she would feed the baby herself.” Aw.
