Foreign interest heats up for hero movie Jeon Woo Chi

Looks like buzz for the upcoming fantasy-action movie Jeon Woo Chi — starring Kang Dong-won and Im Soo-jung — is heating up. The film has just sold to nine overseas markets even before it makes its Korean premiere later this winter.

According to CJ Entertainment, Jeon Woo Chi screened a five-minute promo video at the American Film Market (”the largest motion picture trade show in the world”) on November 4. Following that, the film was sold to four European nations and five Asian and Southeast Asian countries. (Among the buyers: Germany, the Netherlands, China.) The film market is still open for another three days, however, so the number may go up. (Catch the trailer below; it looks like a hella fun ride.)

Character posters for fantasy-action film Jeon Woo Chi

A whole slew of (lovely!) character posters has been released for Kang Dong-won and Im Soo-jung’s upcoming fantasy-hero film Jeon Woo Chi [전우치]. Directed by Tazza’s Choi Dong-hoon, the movie has attracted buzz for its solid cast and its blockbuster-level budget of 10 billion won. The cast includes Kim Yoon-seok (The Chaser), Yoo Hae-jin (Public Enemy Returns), Yeom Jung-ah (Working Mom), and Baek Yoon-shik (the upcomingHero). (Incidentally, Im Soo-jung and Yeom Jung-ah have worked together before, with the latter playing Im’s crazy stepmother in Tale of Two Sisters.)

Kang Dong-won’s Sworn Brothers wraps filming

As a 1981-er, Kang Dong-won (Maundy Thursday) will have to enlist in his mandatory military service by the end of this year, which means that his most recent film, Sworn Brothers [의형제], will be his last. (He has another film still to come out, the fantasy-action movie Jeon Woo Chi, but that has already completed filming and will be released later this year.)

The action thriller stars Kang opposite top actor Song Kang-ho (Thirst) — and if the casting weren’t enough to grab your interest, it’s also directed by Jang Hoon, who filmed the So Ji-sub–Kang Ji-hwan action film Rough Cut. After four months of filming, Sworn Brothers finished its final shoot last week at Incheon International Airport.

Kang Dong-won and Song Kang-ho are sworn brothers

Kang Dong-won, Song Kang-ho

Song Kang-ho and Kang Dong-won playing friends? (Or frenemies?) Ooh, I like this pairing.

In the upcoming action movie Sworn Brothers [의형제], Song Kang-ho, an ex-agent of the National Intelligence Service who acts before he thinks, is paired with Kang Dong-won, who plays a cool-headed spy kicked out from the north. Song’s character was released from the NIS six years prior following a shootout that took place in the heart of Seoul; however, both men keep their identities hidden from each other.

Sworn Brothers is directed by Rough Cut’s Jang Hoon, and just entered principal photography on June 5. This is Song’s next project following his vampire priest turn in Thirst, while Kang Dong-won (Voice of a Murder, Maundy Thursday) will have to enlist for his mandatory military service sometime this year.

I hope that numero is uno

(Yeah I know, it should more accurately be numéro un, but that’s just not as funny.)

Actor Kang Dong-won took some time away from his busy film schedule to show off his fashion sense in October’s Numéro Homme Korea magazine. (His last film was 2007’s much-lauded M; his latest, Jeon Woo-chi, co-stars Im Soo-jung and is set for a 2009 release.)

The special edition of the magazine features a couple other “male fashionistas”: actor Cha Seung-won (Eye for an Eye, Tooth for a Tooth) and Big Bang-er G-Dragon.

Apparently Kang Dong-wan calls the concept he’d prepared for the shoot a “sport bohemian” look. Um…. yeah. Cha Seung-won’s pose is supposedly “dynamic” and his styling “hard-boiled.” G-Dragon sports “bold makeup” and plays with both masculine and feminine characteristics (its suicide boyz, y’all!). I think I have a different term for all three: “femme glam.”
