Temptation of Wolves to become a drama

Another remake is in the works, this time from film to drama, with the adaptation of popular youthful romance Temptation of Wolves. The movie starred Jo Han-seon and Lee Chung-ah, but is perhaps most famous for catapulting a young Kang Dong-won to stardom.

The story premise is fairly straightforward, as a coming-of-age story about a country girl moving to school and ending up in a love triangle with two popular high school boys. The movie was itself an adaptation of a hit internet novel by the same name. At the time of publication, the book set sales records by selling 500,000 copies and was one of those early success stories of internet writers hopping into the mainstream when their online projects took off in popularity.

(Writer Guiyeoni has had some criticism for the literary quality of her works, but I can see how she became such a huge success if she was able to put out projects with strong narrative appeal. And they must’ve had enough of that, since she wrote a few more novels that were turned into well-known movie projects, like He was Cool with Song Seung-heon and Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do with Jang Geun-seok.)

The project has been licensed for adaptation by JS Pictures, which produced a number of successful dramas like Giant, New Heart, and Piano. Apple Tree Pictures is co-producing the project, and has titles like Time Between Dog and Wolf, Bottom of the 9th with 2 Outs, and The Man Who Can’t Marry under their belt.

Well, I’m always up for a witty, sensitive teenage romance, and if the drama can do what the movie did, hopefully that’s what we’ll get. And the question on everyone’s minds: Who will be the next Kang Dong-won?

Kang Dong-won sneaks in to basic training

It wasn’t a secret that Kang Dong-won was planning to report for mandatory military service this month, but he did go out of his way to make his enlistment as quiet as possible on November 18.

That means that Kang bypassed the usual fan and press sendoff — which is generally a star’s last chance to be seen in the public eye for two years — and rode in to the army training grounds in a vehicle provided by the military. He arrived an hour and a half past the expected time (usually 1pm) in order to evade the press outside and keep his profile low.

Kang Dong-won gets wings in High Cut

I can see the reasoning behind the concept for Kang Dong-won’s new shoot for High Cut magazine — he’s supposedly “Mr. Supernatural,” and the shoot coincides with the release of his new movie, Psychic. But I’m not sure I follow the leap from Mr. Supernatural to… winged pants?

No, really. And they’re winged sweatpants, at that. Well, I guess even superheroes have gotta work out? (Oh wait. They don’t. THAT’S THE WHOLE POINT.)

Thriller film Psychic releases character posters and stills

New posters and stills are out for the Go Soo/Kang Dong-won thriller Psychic, which pits the two actors against each other in a battle of wills. Er, minds. Kang Dong-won plays the titular psychic who can exert powers over others, while Go Soo plays the only person who is immune to him.

Though the premise plays with supernatural thriller elements, this movie reportedly goes for a more realistic vibe than, say, Hollywood sci-fi flicks of the same stripe.

Kang Dong-won and Go Soo in Psychic

Kang Dong-won and Go Soo just wrapped on the set of Psychic, their latest project with writer-director Kim Min-suk, who co-wrote The Good, The Bad, The Weird. Psychic filmed at break-neck speed for three months, and finished principal photography this week.

Kang Dong-won plays a character with the ability to invade people’s psyches with his own. It’s described as “using his eyes to move someone’s heart,” so I’m going with mind-control. He actually regrets his gift, and would rather live a peaceful life, but forces prevent him from living quietly. He meets Go Soo’s character, who is the only person he can’t control. Complications ensue.

I sort of wish this were a buddy cop movie. But they end up rivals, and the still below doesn’t bode well for one of them.

Psychic showdown between Kang Dong-won, Go Soo

Good news! Actors Kang Dong-won and Go Soo will be acting together in a new movie, a thriller-comedy (!) titled Psychic [초능력자]. Go Soo’s casting has just been finalized, while Kang had been attached early on in the process.

Kang plays a man possessing supernatural skills, while Go Soo takes on the role of Kang’s rival. Both actors are coming off some strong projects, which heightens anticipation for this one: Kang’s action-fantasy film Jeon Woo Chi and thriller Secret Reunion both performed solidly, while Go’s coming off two buzz projects, the dark film Into the White Night and drama series Will It Snow For Christmas.

Psychic comes from production house Zip Cinema, which produced Jeon Woo Chi (starring Kang Dong-won), Antique Bakery, and A Bittersweet Life. It’s also a commercial-film debut for its director, Kim Min-shik. It will begin filming in May, and aims for release later this year.

Kang Dong-won joins the 10 million club

Seems like the all-time box office rankings are being topped and shuffled around every other day, doesn’t it? Kang Dong-won is the newest actor to join the 10 million club — i.e., actors whose movies have sold 10 million tickets — although with the small caveat that this distinction comes from two films, not a single one. His action-fantasy film Jeon Woo Chil, which released just before Christmas 2009, has surpassed the 6,000,000 mark, while his more recent release of Secret Reunion (Korean title Sworn Brothers) was released on February 4 and has now surpassed 4,000,000 viewers.

In the former, Kang plays an errant Taoist wizard who is released into modern-day Korea after being trapped for 500 years in an enchanted scroll. In the latter, he shows a completely different side to himself as a former North Korean spy who acts alongside Song Kang-ho as his South Korean counterpart.

This is a great way for the actor to go out before his mandatory military service. He is planning to act in one last project before he goes, and is reportedly deciding between two possibilities: Busan Project and Supernatural Powers. Both are films, but Kang has not yet made his final decision.

Hit film Jeon Woo Chi gets a manhwa series

Kang Dong-won‘s fantasy-hero film Jeon Woo Chi has had a strong box office performance, and at last count had sold 5.2 million tickets. Riding that success comes a manhwa series bearing the same name, which will be released in book form as well as via an online subscription service.

Although it’s not rare for a film or drama to be turned into a novel or manhwa, apparently this is a more unusual, as Jeon Woo Chi has been contracted for a three-season project. The first “season” will start being released through its online subscription service on January 25, and once each season has been completed, a book form will be published. Writing will be Lee Kyung-seok of manhwas Battle of Guitar and Zombie Time.

Given the fun, historical-action-magic fusion of the film, Jeon Woo Chi seems like a perfect project for a manhwa adaptation. Too bad the character doesn’t look terribly similar to Kang Dong-won, but I suppose we can’t all be Yonsama, can we?

Additional preview for Secret Reunion

A longer “special preview” has been released for the upcoming action-thriller Sworn Brothers (which is the Korean title, 의형제), also called The Secret Reunion, which comes from director Jang Hoon, who also directed the So Ji-sub–Kang Ji-hwan action film Rough Cut (aka A Movie Is a Movie).

The film stars Song Kang-ho and Kang Dong-won as two enemies (the former’s a South Korean secret agent, the latter a North Korean one) who “risk their lives on one last choice.”

Foreign interest heats up for hero movie Jeon Woo Chi

Looks like buzz for the upcoming fantasy-action movie Jeon Woo Chi — starring Kang Dong-won and Im Soo-jung — is heating up. The film has just sold to nine overseas markets even before it makes its Korean premiere later this winter.

According to CJ Entertainment, Jeon Woo Chi screened a five-minute promo video at the American Film Market (“the largest motion picture trade show in the world”) on November 4. Following that, the film was sold to four European nations and five Asian and Southeast Asian countries. (Among the buyers: Germany, the Netherlands, China.) The film market is still open for another three days, however, so the number may go up. (Catch the trailer below; it looks like a hella fun ride.)
