Sung Yuri and Kang Ji-hwan reunite for zany action-romance comedy

Woo, this movie sounds hysterical, plus Hong Gil Dong fans may be excited to hear that Kang Ji-hwan and Sung Yuri are reteaming in a new movie called Detective Cha, directed by Shin Tae-ra of Kang’s action-comedy movie Level 7 Civil Servant.

The movie is another action comedy that unfolds around Detective Cha Chul-soo…who, in order to solve a case, has to transform his macho self into a supermodel to walk the runway. Pffffffffffft. It’s like Miss Congeniality meets Zoolander, and there is no part of that sentence I don’t like. This is great. I can see the crazy happening already.

More songs! And this time, they’re sung by some of your favorite (or not) actors. This list is hardly comprehensive, and I picked mostly those actors who weren’t singers first. (And if they were, they are generally stars who are not known for their singing, despite their origins. See: Kim Kang-woo’s awesome beginnings as a soft-ballad rapper. That video takes forever to load, but trust me, it’s worth it.)

My Kang Ji-hwan (Lie To Me) is featured in a magazine spread looking pretty sleek and also, uh, not-so-sleek for September’s issue of Officiel Homme, a men’s fashion magazine.

On one hand, you have upswept hair, a sharp suit, and yes, probably a liberal use of the airbrush. But still: Put-together and lookin’ good. A little bit Vampire Prince Chaebol In Gothic Romance, but overall I’m digging the pretty.

Ki-joon asks why she’s turning down his proposal. Yes, WHY? Ah-jung says that she loves him, but feels scared, like she’s lost something… but she doesn’t know what. Is it freedom? The chance to snog a bunch of men? The right to dance around your room naked?

He promises to wait. She goes to Jeju on a work trip and he sends her off with a watch and a kiss.

Ah-jung gets the word that she’s fired and runs out of the party barefoot. Piggyback time! And then to drive the Cinderella motif in further, someone retrieves her shoes, and Ki-joon puts them on her feet tenderly as he literally makes the crack, “They’re not even glass.” He calls her a crybaby (ain’t that the truth) and promises to make it so that she won’t cry anymore. Care to make a wager on that?

Ki-joon ditches his big dinner meeting to take Ah-jung out to “relieve some stress.” Aww, yeah. Oh wait, he means games and street food. I guess that’s fun too.

(Now, there’s the Kang Ji-hwan I miss seeing onscreen! All boyish energy and charm. It’s like he’s flattened out his natural liveliness for this role, when really he’s at his best being totally off-the-wall. See: Coffee House, Hong Gil Dong, Level 7 Civil Servant.)

Lie To Me: Episode 11 Open Thread

Greetings once again from the North Pole! The girls forwarded all your requests for me to make another guest appearance, so here I am, back by popular demand (well, that and a barrel of rye, but if my Tax Elf asks, that was just a “gift”).

Gosh, I haven’t recapped since my episode of Bad Guy. Hope my sharp skills of deduction haven’t gotten rusty. I sure loved bragging to all the elves about all the fan mail I got. They’re way better than the usual Dear Santa fare. Some of them even had curse words! Ho ho ho!

Also, I’d like to personally thank those of you who gave me legal advice on the reindeer union strike of 2010. We finally reached a settlement, and though I mostly had to employ the people at FedEx to get presents delivered, I finally finished by Memorial Day. If you still haven’t gotten your present, either (1) the incompetent, sorry excuse for reindeer at FedEx lost your package; or (2) you’re naughty.

You know which one you are.

EPISODE 11 WEECAP

Ah-jung tells the Big Wigs that they’re married.

Ki-joon tells them that they’re not.

Get your story straight, people.

Ki-joon tears up the contract and yells that they’re starting over, no lies this time.

Yeah, this would’ve been awesome had it come six episodes ago.

So-ran scares Jae-bum into thinking she’s going to off herself.

She’s really hiding away in Jeju, and Ah-jung conveniently has to go there for work.

Ki-joon follows her there, deigning to go by boat rather than private helicopter.

He basically does her job for her, since he’s a VVVVVVIP and she is not.

So-ran pretends to die, because that’s apparently acceptable behavior for a grown woman.

Ah-jung saves her hide by making a really really long metaphor about how Jeju is Mom, because of abalone, and I don’t see how this is going to work, but somehow it does, because Ki-joon miraculously translates her extended metaphor into three languages at the same time, and everyone has a mother but her. Or something.

They celebrate with an awkwardly lavish dinner, and then finally apologize and confess their Twu Wuv.

They kiss and Ki-joon promises to take it slow and only look at her.

Then the girl who doesn’t take a hint sees it all. Well, that takes care of that, eh?

Lie To Me: Episode 10 Open Thread

Weecap!

Both sides have acknowledged their feelings for each other, so to keep the drama going for another three weeks, Episode 10 introduces a grab bag of manufactured conflicts. Warning: Don’t think too hard, or head hurty.

So Ah-jung acts demure on her mat-seon, Sam-soon style, and Ki-joon drags her outta there, Sam-shik style. She admits she likes him, and asks him not to like that other chick. His stance: I don’t like her, but I don’t want to hurt her, hence I will hurt you, the one I do like…. He asks if she could like him if he were so wishy-washy as to renege on an old commitment. No, I’m sure she loves ya because you’re wishy-washy about your feelings. Ugh, this is the Full House conflict that drove me batty. It’s like the opposite of having your cake and eating it too. It’s…purposely buying your cake, setting it out to look at all day, and then giving it away and watching someone else eat it.
