It’s too bad that Hyun Bin was missing from the 47th Baeksang Arts Awards, since he and his drama picked up a bunch of awards. (Alas, there’s that whole mandatory military thing.)

Not only did he grab a Daesang in the TV portion (film Daesang went to Lee Byung-heon for his thriller I Saw the Devil), both his projects won awards as well: Tang Wei for film Late Autumn, who’s pictured above with Ha Ji-won, his co-star in Secret Garden, which won top honors for the drama category. Looks like he’s on a roll, even in absentia. Do the Marines allow celebratory Baeksang parties for their celeb enlistees? Surely he earned a drink or two, at least.

The awards were held on the evening of May 26 in Seoul, and hosted by actors Ryu Shi-won (Style) and Kim Ah-joong (Sign).

Forensic-crime drama Sign went out on a high this week — at least, ratings-wise — but it was hardly smooth sailing getting there. The most noticeable problems were the glaring glitches that marred the broadcast: audio cut in and out, sometimes repeating, editing was choppy, and an error screen with color bars was sent up halfway through.

Unsurprisingly, fans were disappointed, and let their disgruntlement known online. The producers have apologized for the problems, as well as for running behind schedule in a way that compromised the quality of the episode. A production rep explained that they were taking particular care in shoots for the finale, but in so doing, they ran out of time for adequate post-production work, which accounts for the spotty sound and visual work. Yeah, I coulda told you that the prettiest pictures in the world are worth nothing if you muck ‘em up with crap sound and editing. The rep promised a higher-quality rebroadcast, stating that they’re at work now cleaning up and improving the episode.

Yeah, I still find that above image weird. Is he a magician? Is he going to raise the dead with his super-psychic powers? Is he unleashing some sort of snowmaking abilities from his hands? I… got nothing.

Ahem. In any case, SBS’s Sign kicks off this week, and in anticipation of its premiere, here are a whole slew of stills from the drama, featuring its five main characters: Park Shin-yang and Kim Ah-joong as forensic doctors (he’s a genius, she’s a rookie), Eom Ji-won as a tough prosecutor, Jung Kyeo-woon as the hot-blooded cop she appears to be butting heads with, and Jeon Gwang-ryul as the boss at the forensic lab.

SBS’s forensic-investigation drama Sign gives us a peek into its exam room in these stills, with its leads, Park Shin-yang and Kim Ah-joong, playing coroners.

The drama’s title refers to the hidden signs within the dead bodies that reveal clues about the crime (and criminals) that did the victims in. The show is shot in Paju, on its set location at the Prism Complex, which is where these scenes were filmed.

SBS’s medical-forensic-crime drama Sign is one that admittedly doesn’t capture my interest right now, but I think there’s the possibility for it to be better than I’m thinking. Until I remember that the writer also wrote Yoon Eun-hye’s flop My Fair Lady and Kim Sun-ah’s flop When Night Comes (and Hyun Bin’s Snow Queen).

Even so, I’m trying to be optimistic, since I do like supporting leads Eom Ji-won (so chipper and adorable in The Woman Who Still Wants to Marry) and Jung Kyeo-woon (who was surprisingly endearing in Dr. Champ). And despite the predictable storytelling formulas of the CSI and Law and Order franchises, those shows can be pretty entertaining, and may offer a welcome break from all the angst and romance in K-dramaland these days. (I’m a sucker for romances, be they comedic or dramatic, but even I’m getting a little romanced-out; something new would be a refreshing change of pace.)

Having just mentioned MBC’s My Princess, here’s a look at its competition, SBS’s forensic-crime-investigation drama Sign (formerly titled Heaven). The following are the first stills from the drama, which began filming about a week ago.

(Sign will get a few weeks’ jump on My Princess, which will be attempting to crack the supposed “MBC curse” that has killed drama after drama in its Wednesday-Thursday lineup. In fact, since 2008, MBC hasn’t had any dramas maintain double-digit ratings in that slot, except for one: Personal Taste.)

Sign stars Park Shin-yang (Painter of the Wind) and Kim Ah-joong (Accidental Couple) as two forensic doctors who engage in some C.S.I. action as they solve murder cases through science. The drama also covers the workplace relationships and politics at the lab where they work, in addition to — of course! — romantic entanglements. Besides Park and Kim, we have Eom Ji-won (The Woman Who Still Wants To Marry, in the still above) as Park’s ex and an aggressive prosecutor.

As previously mentioned, Kim Ah-joong (Accidental Couple, above) and Park Shin-yang (Painter of the Wind) will soon be returning to broadcast airwaves with their new drama, initially titled Heaven, which has now been renamed Sign and given a slot on SBS’s upcoming TV schedule.

The medical investigation drama takes a page out of the C.S.I. handbook in following the work of two forensic doctors: he’s the famous perfectionist boss, she’s the rookie subordinate. Of course. So what else is new? Together they’ll perform autopsies and solve murder cases; the drama also looks into the power struggles and rivalries that exist within their organization. (Or, to put it simply: office drama!)

A year after her last television series (Accidental Couple), Kim Ah-joong is back in drama-land with Heaven, the project recently announced as Park Shin-yang‘s comeback vehicle.

The drama, which purportedly explores a “new human medical investigative genre” format, follows doctors who perform autopsies at the National Scientific, Criminal & Investigation Laboratory, which explains the allusion to death in the title. The plot will unfold around the mysterious cases that come their way, which includes a huge conspiracy that Kim uncovers that takes a central role in the drama’s plot. So… C.S.I meets suspense thriller, with a dash of Grey’s Anatomy?

Kim’s character is always making tons of mistakes and therefore getting scolded by her sunbae (Park), a prickly perfectionist. Naturally, romance ensues. Despite sometimes being careless, she also displays a “cute and lovable” appeal, as well as being a dogged problem-solver.

The series will be directed by Jang Hang-joon of 2002′s Break Out, whose work is characterized by a “unique directing style.” Heaven is planning for an early 2011 airdate and will begin shooting in November.

Kim Ah-joong (200 Pound Beauty, Accidental Couple) has been cast in a joint U.S. and Chinese film project, which is titled Amazing. It is described as a “sports adventure movie” that deals with the “internet virtual-reality world” and boasts a budget of 20 billion won, which comes to roughly 17 million USD.

In Amazing, Kim plays the love interest to Chinese actor Huang Xiaoming (The Return of the Condor Heroes, The Banquet); her character is noted for her sharp intellect. Huang plays the CTO (chief technology officer) of the world’s top internet game development company, and American actor Eric Mabius (Ugly Betty) has also been cast.

The plot involves the development of a basketball virtual-reality internet game, and appearances from real NBA basketball stars are expected, including Yao Ming and Magic Johnson. The movie travels between reality of the real-word and virtual kind and explores a new fusion of genres. The production house behind the film is Shanghai Film Group and the movie will be directed by Sherwood Hu of the lauded Prince of the Himalayas, which was a period epic based on Hamlet set in Tibet.

Amazing began filming on the 15th — Kim recently flew to China, where she is currently shooting — and is planning for release in the first half of 2011.

Er… this sounds weird.
