Kim Byul plays rock guitarist for new film

Kim Byul (Baby and Me) is one of those actresses I think ought to be working more, and getting more recognition, based on the sparks of potential she’s shown in her career thus far. Perhaps this new project will be her chance, as she’s landed the lead female role in a movie titled Dangerous Thrill, alongside actor Yoon Je-moon of Midas and IRIS.

The movie unfolds around an ordinary government employee (Yoon) who possesses a strict sense of composure — a description that always means he’s about to lose that, right quick. And sure enough, when he goes to Seoul’s (hipster-y, rock-music hub) Hongdae neighborhood for a bust, he has a chance encounter with some youngsters in an indie band, and that sparks a sudden change in his life.

Kim Byul plays a “chic guitarist” named Mi-sun, described as a young woman who knows exactly what she wants and what she’s capable of doing. She’s sharp and realistic, and at 16 years Yoon’s junior, it remains to be seen (according to promo descriptions) how their relationship will evolve.

All in all, we’ve only got a vague description of the movie’s setup, so we’ll have to read between the lines: I predict some classic fish-out-of-water scenarios and some existential struggles, with some thoughtful bonding moments sprinkled throughout. The film comes from director Gu Ja-hong, who also did the 2004 action-comedy The Last Wolf (which starred Yang Dong-geun and Hwang Jung-min), so I’m going to expect some humor, although Dangerous Thrill is described as drama.

As I said, I think Kim Byul has shown bits of her charm and talent, but hasn’t gotten a proper chance to show audiences what she can do. She was winsome in one of her earliest roles, Taereung National Village, where she acted with future stars Lee Min-ki and Lee Seon-kyun; she also acted with Jang Geun-seok (Baby and Me) and Kim Bum (Biasang), as well as Eric in the silly sageuk drama Strongest Chil-woo. So, she’s had some big-name co-stars. Yet she’s still sort of coasting under the radar, waiting for her breakthrough.

Frankly, I don’t know that this’ll be it, but I’m all for seeing more of her bubbly, quirky appeal. Maybe one of these days she’ll score her big drama moment.

New Bisang poster features Kim Bum’s two love interests

A new poster is out for Kim Bum‘s new movie Bisang (first poster here), which shows the young actor in a love triangle as he poses in turn with each of his co-stars; the top photo shows Kim Bum with Lee Chae-young, while the bottom features Kim Byul.

As the top host in the nightlife scene, Kim Bum’s character turns away Lee Chae-young coolly. In contrast, Kim Byul plays his pure first love, and in order to protect her, he risks his life and transforms into a “real man.” (Whatever that means?)

I can only speak for myself, but my first reaction is: there’s some weird photoshopping going on, right? All three are very good-looking young stars, but Kim Bum’s face looks weirdly stretched in the bottom image. (It’s not just me, right?)

In any case, the action-melodrama-romance film will be out in theaters December 3.

Kim Bum and Kim Byul‘s new “youth action film” Bisang [비상] is busily filming and has been releasing stills (such as these previously posted photos of the two actors’ kiss scene).

Kim Bum plays “Shi-bum,” an aspiring movie actor whose first love is “Soo-kyung,” played by Kim Byul. The latest action stills (see below), shot last week, are taken from scenes that required wire work; Kim Bum filmed the action without a stunt double as he jumped from a building 20 meters high.

Kim Bum and Kim Byul’s movie kiss

As seen in these newly released stills, the action drama film Bisang [or Flight, or 비상] features a kiss between its two actors, almost-20-year-old hot commodity Kim Bum and 22-year-old Kim Byul.

The film is described as exploring the themes of young angst, love, pain, and maturation. Kim Bum (Boys Before Flowers, I Like It Hot) plays a young aspiring actor who dreams of being the best, while Kim Byul (Baby and I, Strongest Chil Woo) plays a “pure soul” who has an unhappy family life. The kiss scene follows the confirmation of the two characters’ feelings for each other.

More stars pay their respects to deceased colleague

Okay, I think I’m done posting pics of stars visiting Lee Eon‘s funeral room. If more information comes to light, I’m on it, but until then we’re just going to be getting photos of grieving folks, which is probably gratuitous.

I know it sounds hypocritical for me to dislike the photos and then post them. However, I do think it’s a matter of interest — just up to a point. When it starts feeling gratuitous, I step back.

Strongest Chil Woo: Episode 20 (Final)

Ah, another final episode, another drama wrapped.

Let’s be honest: Strongest Chil Woo isn’t a great show. It’s probably not even a good one. But it has been often entertaining and despite its recent darker turns, I was holding out hope that the finale would see a return to lighter, goofier times. In that, I’m pretty satisfied. The resolution we’re given is hopeful without being too cartoony, and as far as last episodes go, it did the job.

But let’s get on with the show…

Promoting his drama with a come-hither stare

Is it just me, or does the cast of Strongest Chil Woo look like they just stepped out of the pages of a Sears catalog (come see the softer side!)? With a hangover? Such pretty ladies, such unflattering styling.

Anyway, when I first heard about this upcoming fusion historical series, I was kinda tired of the genre and the concept. But now that Iljimae has started and utterly lost me a mere three episodes in — though I seem to one of the vast minority who took the red pill on that one — I’m actually starting to look forward to Chil Woo. It looks like a total fluff drama — but at least a fun one. And at the end of the day, I want entertainment.

The cast had their press day on June 4 in Seoul, and those in attendance included stars Eric (aka Moon Jong Hyuk) and Gu Hye Sun, as well as supporting actors Lee Eon, Kim Byul, Yoo Ah In, Im Ha Ryong and Jeon No Min.

The drama airs next week on June 9 on KBS2. Here’s the preview trailer — anyone else feeling shades of Back to the Future with the makeshift boarding?

A few more points for Chil Woo…

Hmm, they’re slowly winning me over with their cast…

KBS’s new fusion sageuk Strongest Chil Woo (or Choi Kang Chil Woo) seemed a little like another attempt at what they’d just done with Hong Gil Dong — funny, jokey, comedic historical. And while I enjoyed Hong Gil Dong for what it was, I can’t say it was a quality drama. (There were flashes of something interesting, but ultimately I think it was too uneven.) Plus we have Iljimae coming up — not just one but two different series — so I wasn’t really all that interested in Eric‘s turn in Chil Woo — even after they added Gu Hye Sun to the cast.

But now they’ve gone and added two more actors I dig, Lee Eon from Coffee Prince and Kim Byul from Taereung National Village. I don’t know what it is about the foursome, but for some reason they feel well-matched to me. But on the other hand, it doesn’t exactly scream serious work of art. I’ll be watching this one merely to see how well its sense of humor fares.

I’ve been disappointed enough in the past to not put too much faith in a series’ actors to carry a show, but I will say that Chil Woo just got a little more interesting. The drama airs on KBS2 in the beginning of June.

Kim Byul, Jang Geun Seok — and baby makes three

Doll-faced actress Kim Byul (of the uncommonly good sports drama Taereung National Village, and Clazziquai’s “Sweety” music video opposite Lee Junki) has been cast opposite Jang Geun Seok (of the current fusion sageuk Hong Gil Dong — but if you spend any time on this site you already know that, lol) in a new movie, Baby and I. She was also in the teen sex farce Dasepo Naughty Girls, which I actually thought was quite interesting on several levels (although as a film narrative I think it ultimately falls short).

In Baby and Me, the 18-year-old character played by Jang Geun Seok has his life turned upside-down by sudden fatherhood. Kim Byul plays a quirky girl who, coincidentally, shares her name with her character in the film, which initially was a source of surprise for both actor and producers — she’d received the script to audition for the part and was startled at seeing the name. A source from the production team explains: “It isn’t only the name that’s similar, but in every aspect she’s like the film character, as though she’d come straight out of the movie.”

The film is set to start filming at the end of March.

Despite the winningness of Coffee Prince, I’m starting to veer from cheery immersion into overload territory, and before that flares into full-on burnout, I thought I’d turn my attentions elsewhere to balance things out a bit. I’ve started watching some other series, dabbling in a sea of first episodes, trying to see which ones are worth sticking with.

The first to stand out as noteworthy is the short Best Theater miniseries Taereung National Village (태릉선수촌), which is a series of which I’ve heard many good things (this one’s for you, thundie!) and had been meaning to try even before realizing that its director is the same Lee Yoon Jung who is currently at the helm of Coffee Prince.
