javabeans: We kick off Part 2 of our “romantic backpacking trip” with special guest Choi Kang-hee, and the captions prompt the question: What do you need with you on a backpacking trip? Tae-woong says a camera, Tae-hyun says music, and I’m hoping somebody said food and shelter.

girlfriday: Maybe they assumed it would get taken away anyway.

javabeans: Am I the only one who’s like, But is that reason to stop trying? C’mon, years of this stuff, weekend after weekend, some lazy PD’s gonna slip up someday.

girlfriday: One missed bag check later, Shi-kyung’s sitting in the corner with a mound of candy bars and Joo-won’s playing video games?

EPISODE 437. Broadcast on May 5, 2013.

javabeans: Cool, we start out this episode at home—Tae-woong’s home, that is to say. I like when we get to see inside their lives, even if it’s just briefly. There’s a dog lazing around (of course) and his wife (who still calls him oppa) is watching him pack for his trip. Wife: “Do you know how to fold that parka flat?” Tae-woong: “I can just crumple in it there.” Boys.

girlfriday: And then we hear her groooooaaaan when he takes out an old vest that she hates. Ha. This is cute. He ignores her fashion advice and tries to get the puppy’s attention, and the puppy ignores him. Karma?

javabeans: I guess there are no VJs here, which probably adds to the cute factor. It looks like each guy has a camera that a friend or relative is shooting themselves.

javabeans: Let’s hope there’s a decent meal for all at the end of the mud train, because lunch was really sad.

girlfriday: I don’t know what Hae-jin is smoking, but when Su-geun asks him what he wants to do about teams, Hae-jin says he’ll stick with his (losing) lunch team.

javabeans: Uh-oh. It’s like gambling fever. Double-or-nothing mania. Stubbornness over logic.

javabeans: Right off the bat as the members arrive for a new trip, we’re hit with a preview of the goodies to come today: Let’s just say there’s lots of mud, digging, and humiliation in store for them.

girlfriday: Muahaha. The boys get together for a group-walking intro and everyone wears sunglasses to try and look cool… except for Su-geun, whose look I can’t even describe.

javabeans: Did Su-geun pick that out of his son’s Cracker Jacks?

girlfriday: There couldn’t be more colors in a pair of sunglasses if you tried.

EPISODE 434. Broadcast on April 14, 2013.

javabeans: We resume with the second half of the introduction to our new member and mat-hyung Yoo Hae-jin, the movie actor who’s totally not competitive about anything, except maybe when he’s competing. We also need a nickname for the new PD, otherwise we’ll be three years out and still calling him New PD. Then again, it is kind of funny that New PD and Bird PD are the same word.

girlfriday: Yeah that worked out nicely for Bird. We’ll have to wait and see what sticks with the new guy. We catch up to the boys after their dip in the ocean, where they tell their newbie that they have to assess his game skills. They decide to teach some classes to get him up to speed, and Tae-hyun perks up, asking if he can sit in on the lectures too.

javabeans: Time for the new member to join our 1N2D family! I wonder if this is weirder for you, the longtime viewer, than it is for me — I started watching right when there were all those changes so this seems like just another day. Albeit without Seung-woo hyung.

girlfriday: You know, I’ve seen so many members come and go on this show over the years, and watched Jong-min go to army and come back, so it’s not that strange anymore. Though in some ways I’m STILL weirded out by the fact that Ho-dong isn’t around, so there’s that.

javabeans: This also means a return to the KBS station for the traditional butt-crack-of-dawn opening, which is something we haven’t seen in what seems like ages. The six members arrive with that extra bit of anticipation as they start off the recording to intro their latest addition.

EPISODE 432. Broadcast on March 31, 2013.

girlfriday: So we catch up to the sleepytime bokbulbok race on Jeju Island, where the odd-numbered flag-pullers get to sleep indoors.

javabeans: OH RIGHT. The awesomely random flag-pulling race where you have to guess which place you are in the race and mess with your teammates’ minds by deliberately not pulling the flag. So we end up with team members literally just crouched in various spots around the perimeter — Jong-min, Joo-won, Su-geun — trying to “hide” and bide their time. Currently Seung-woo is in first place (yay!) and Tae-hyun the Unlucky in second.

EPISODE 431. Broadcast on March 24, 2013.

girlfriday: We start at the end of the last trip, when Seung-woo had complained that Bird only fed them once a day, which led to Tae-woong of all people suggesting a jokgu match. So then they set up for a Staff vs. Cast game of jokgu, with jajangmyun on the line if the cast wins. But if the staff wins, on the next trip they really will only get one meal a day.

javabeans: This is a bad idea, right? A foregone conclusion? A Dog Feet nightmare?

girlfriday: Yes, historically this is an epically bad idea. Each side sets up handicap rules, like the staff having to include the older cameramen, and the cast having to always keep either Tae-woong or Jong-min in play. But when they start, Joo-won turns out to be a black hole too. Did we know this about him? Or is he just trying to be Dog Feet II?

javabeans: I didn’t think he’d be terrible, but I seem to have the pre-existing idea that Joo-won is not especially gifted at game-sports. He’s fast and possibly strong, but not necessarily coordinated. Maybe this is just one more reason Tae-woong loves him so much.

EPISODE 430. Broadcast on March 17, 2013.

girlfriday: The boys arrive at the village after their Wig Race, and get to eat fresh handpicked strawberries. I totally expect Bird to say they have to pick like 3,000 of them to leave, but they get to just eat and move on. Bird does ask at the end of their walk if they remember where they’ve been today, because it MIGHT come in handy later.

javabeans: I would’ve been on my guard the moment I got to eat berries, but he seems to have lulled them into a false sense of security. While they take a rest, the guys wonder what Joo-won’s parents thought of their impromptu visit last time, and put in a call to Mom. Ha, and then Mom calls Su-geun out for saying on-air that he’d leave some cash for all the food they ate, and then didn’t.

girlfriday: Haha, Tae-hyun says he’ll return Joo-won’s trivia notes after he studies them some more, and then totally rats Joo-won out for his emoticon clue-giving earlier that day.

girlfriday: Spring is here, and is it just me or are we getting an extra-epic intro today?

javabeans: It does have that build-up of momentum, with Bird greeting each member upon arrival with a pouch and instructing him not to open it — or show it to the other members.

girlfriday: I like it. Start the day with secrets!

javabeans: They’re splitting into three teams today, for a race taking them through the city and hitting seven points of interest. At each location they’ll play a game to win points, with a total of four thousand on the line. (The game is a pun on the city name, Sacheon, which also means four thousand.)
